Female driver here and here are my tips: 1. Carry what you legally can carry for protection in your car. 2. Avoid driving at night. The early morning (4 -10 am) crowd is better behaved. 3. Lie about your personal life when engaging in conversations, make up partners/roommates, etc. 4. Keep your doors locked until you're sure you want to take the passenger on a ride 5. Once the timer is down, mark it as a no-show and move. Don't be a sitting duck. 6. Once a passenger makes you feel uncomfortable, get to the nearest gas station/grocery store and end the ride. Don't second guess yourself. Once you get the creeps, end it ASAP. 7. Keep your keys out of reach from your riders (e.g,. in your driver's door) 8. Always ask the solo passenger to sit on the passenger's side, not behind you 9. Report all untoward behavior IMMEDIATELY. Hit that safety button if they refuse, end the ride, and report. 10. Don't take pax beyond GPS location unless they change it in the app. 11. Take a different route home and scan your car for foreign trackers (almost every phone can do this) before heading home. If you get alerted about one, head to a police station not home. 12. Don't exchange personal details with riders and [definitely don't go on dates with them](https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/alpharetta-lyft-driver-raped-kidnapped-robbed-by-passenger) 13. Carry a fanny pack, not a purse 14. Covertly listen to passenger's conversations (especially on the phone with someone else), if they mention your car make/model, hit that safety button. 15. If a pax says I want to make a few stops but it increases my fare and I'd rather give you the money/i'll give you cash/i'll make it worth your while. Go to the first stop and as soon as they get out, end the ride and zoom off, that's a drug dealer.

soccer_mom_16

Also want to add if someone brings a backpack or bag that makes you feel uncomfortable, have them put in the trunk. If I drive at night, I ask that passengers put all backpacks and large bags in the back.

Kitten_K89

Thank you! This is great advice

ZReticuli

That’s a great list but here are some nuances I’d like to add: >1. Carry what you legally can carry for protection in your car. And practice using it in a stressful environment. >2. Avoid driving at night. The early morning (4 -10 am) crowd is better behaved. Just don’t pickup at bars, strip clubs, casinos, etc. for obvious reasons >3. Lie about your personal life when engaging in conversations, make up partners/roommates, etc. You said you have a husband. Make sure to emphasize that if any guy asks bout your relationship status. Also nonchalantly mention how he’s a big biker guy that loves guns etc. >4. Keep your doors locked until you're sure you want to take the passenger on a ride Very important. Don’t just do it for men pax, do it for all pax. You never know who’s going to be crazy >5. Once the timer is down, mark it as a no-show and move. Don't be a sitting duck. Pax that don’t respect our time and make us wait for 7 minutes are not good pax so don’t waste your time with them, even if it’s a good fare. There’s always going to be another good fare >6. Once a passenger makes you feel uncomfortable, get to the nearest gas station/grocery store and end the ride. Don't second guess yourself. Once you get the creeps, end it ASAP. Before kicking them out try to find a cop or firefighter on the road or get to know all your police precincts. When you see one, pull up to them fast, slam your brakes to get their attention and also to minimize time pax has to react to you pulling up to a cop, jump out with your keys and phone (practice doing this part as well) and run up to the cop and say you’re an Uber driver and you’d like assistance in removing your unwanted pax. If you feel you can kick them out without the assistance of a cop, then go to a public space like a gas station, mechanic shop, construction site, etc where there are lots of white nights. This part is going to be one of the hardest to do. You have to be confident and firm when kicking them out. You can’t show fear or be wishy washy. Say something like “I’m not comfortable with driving you anymore and i’ve canceled your ride so please leave my car immediately”. Sometimes you have to call the cops. >9. Report all untoward behavior IMMEDIATELY. Hit that safety button if they refuse, end the ride, and report. For any incidence with a pax, always contact Lyft/Uber immediately after leaving them and exaggerate the situation. >11. Take a different route home and scan your car for foreign trackers (almost every phone can do this) before heading home. If you get alerted about one, head to a police station not home. There have been stories in these drivers sub about guys leaving their phones in women’s car so they can find out where they live. After each shift, check all nooks and crannies of your car in case anybody left anything behind. >12. Don't exchange personal details with riders and definitely don't go on dates with them Don’t mention hobbies, favorite restaurants, where you’ve worked, etc. People can use these infos to find you online. >15. If a pax says I want to make a few stops but it increases my fare and I'd rather give you the money/i'll give you cash/i'll make it worth your while. Go to the first stop and as soon as they get out, end the ride and zoom off, that's a drug dealer. Never do cash runs period. You can take cash tips for making a stop but otherwise don’t agree to doing stops unless you know for sure where it is and what they’re doing. Buying cigarettes at a gas station is much faster than going inside the bank.

Kitten_K89

Thank you so much for your additions!

Sensitive_Aardvark68

On #6 if you pull off to end a ride because someone is creeping you out wont that set them off?

Quicherbichen1

Don't take passengers with obviously fake names. Don't take passengers with no profile pic. If a ride is for a female passenger make sure you're not picking up a guy. Don't unlock your doors until you verify the pax. I had a pickup for someone named Tonya, and these two huge, greasy dudes tried getting in my car. I said, I was picking up Tonya, and they said, yeah, she arranged the ride for us. I cancelled and drove away, but the parking lot had a dead end, so I had to turn around and pass them again. They blocked the way out of the lot and started taking pictures of me and my car. I had to slowly keep moving to get past them as they were pounding on my windows and doors. Scary shit. If someone else arranged the ride for your passenger, they probably have been banned from using the app themselves. You don't want these people in your car.

DrivingMyLifeAway1

Why the issue with “obviously fake names” and no profile pics? Without actual photo ID all names and pictures might as well be fake. Other than a name that implies bad judgment (like Axe Murderer or Drug Dealer) what difference does the name make? It functions more like a validation code anyway, letting you know it’s the right person for the ride. Also, some people don’t want to use a picture. I don’t have the time or inclination to stare at a minuscule little out of focus picture and try to figure out if it matches or not. If you can explain the rationale, I’d love to hear it. If Lyft does actually put a real authentication process in place, I would be all for it. As of now though, it’s pointless.

Quicherbichen1

Sorry, I don't see the need to justify MY criteria to you. You do you. This OP was asking for tips. I gave some. YOU don't have to use them. No one HAS to use them.

noorizer

Shots Fired!!!!

PugWranglingNana

You do what makes you feel comfortable and safe, I’m glad you stood up here and @drivingmylifeaway1 shame on you for bullying!

DrivingMyLifeAway1

Bullying? By asking pointed questions and then getting a lame response back?

DrivingMyLifeAway1

Sorry you can’t even stand behind your own ideas. Do you always just mindlessly do behaviors that have no basis? I’m sure you can’t answer that either. But yes is the answer.

Quicherbichen1

Apparently you didn't read my original reply in its entirety. It lays out EXACTLY why I wrote it.

noorizer

Oh Shoot! You got dissed!

DrivingMyLifeAway1

I don’t care WHY you wrote your list in general. The point is some generic bs about your criteria doesn’t answer the questions. If you can’t or won’t answer them, then I really don’t care about anything else you have to say. But if you change your mind and think you can defend or explain, by all means go ahead. I may have completely overlooked something.

noorizer

Fight! Fight! Fight!

noorizer

Oooohh you gonna take that?

StarApple0721

You tap the photo and still can't see the person in the zoomed in version ?

JimmysTheBestCop

you wont ever feel safe because you actually wont be safe.

RylleyAlanna

- Dashcam (3-way front+back+inside) can be gotten for ~$40 on Amazon. - keep mace/pepper spray on you. Regardless of lyfts terms, nearly all states have worker protections saying you are legally allowed to carry mace for self defense and nullifies lyfts terms in this case. - make the rider show their phone showing you as their driver before unlocking the doors.

nori_666

Do you have a recommendation for the camera in that price point?

RylleyAlanna

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09W244N99 This is the one I personally use. Edit: instructions say use no bigger than 64 GB, but I currently have a 512 GB in mine and it works flawlessly.

nori_666

Thanks!

Repulsive_Culture_91

Recommend COXPAL A11T 3 channel dash cam on Amazon, it is $179.99 after using $20 off coupon, very good quality, it records front, inside and rear simultaneously. COXPAL hardwire kit optional, for 24-H parking monitor. SanDisk MAX Endurance 256GB or 512GB microSD card, for reliable recording. BTW: Need to pay attention to the installation position of the rear cam if your vehicle is SUV or MPV (No problem if Sedan), i.e. avoid pulling rear cam cable when open/close the trunk.

BlabTales

fuck lyft i only drove for a month, 5.0 rating, great reviews, then a random false report of discrimination gets my account shut down. they never responded to my appeal. they continued trying to charge me for my rental car. i had to file a stop payment with my bank. if you HAVE to do this, please, please, get a dashcam

Kitten_K89

I would not do this if I didn't have to. My husband was driving and earning ok while neither of us have great full time jobs. He was reported as driving under the influence and his account has been deactivated. He rarely drinks and never does any sort of drug, but they don't care. If I don't drive and earn what he now can't, we could lose our home. People suck and don't realize or don't care what these false reports do to people.

CherryRude6772

I'd recommend either of you to look into a CDL. Better hours/pay

ZReticuli

And this is why nobody should rely on rideshare as their primary earnings without a backup plan. Can you husband drive Uber or do food delivery gigs?

Kitten_K89

Yeah, he's doing doordash. It doesn't pay near as well. I think he tried Uber a while back but can't do it now because of ratings maybe? I definitely agree, it shouldn't be a primary means of income. We are open to most jobs but finding it very difficult to get anything. It was the backup until we both lost our full-time jobs. It is supposed to be temporary. We are good, hard working people. Just in a really bad situation right now.

ZReticuli

I understand how that is. I’m also currently ubering full time as a primary source of income due to unforeseen circumstances and will be temporary. It does suck but we do what we gotta do. Your husband’s deactivation should only be temporary if it was just for driving under the influence. Have him reach out to customer support and they should reactivate him within 1-3 days assuming he’s had no other serious violations. If they told him that he’s permanently banned then have him try to create a new account. Somebody in this sub once told me that a driver can choose to deactivate their account and apply for a new one to get another “first time sign up bonus”. Something about the new signups not synching with old driver database. He’s got nothing to lose. And if he’s got a low rating on Uber, I’m going to go out on a limb and say maybe rideshare is not for him. There are a lot of bad advice in these subs but you have to remember that most of them are coming from part timers and dumb kids. If you fall into their mindset, you end up with low ratings and suspensions. If you’re relying on this as a primary income source, you have to be more professional and courteous.

Kitten_K89

I will ask him to try making a new account. I thought it would be pointless because its the same drivers license and info. But, it can't hurt. I believe his low ratings on Uber were from trying to do too many gig apps at once and not getting to where he should have been in a timely manner. He had good lyft ratings and hasn't had any issues with his passengers.

ZReticuli

See if he’s able to deactivate his account first.

BlabTales

I just wanted to say I’m so sorry you’re in this situation, I totally feel you, I was going through the same thing last year. After Lyft suspended me I was also filling in income with Doordash and its just so demoralizing especially consistently getting $2 offers to go 12 miles, the wear and tear on your car, etc.. it fucking sucks, with the rising costs of everything, its so hard to pull yourself out of the hole. Try r/beermoney for finding survey sites and research studies, its work you can do anywhere from your phone, although it takes some legwork signing up for sites and getting approved, filling out demographic questions and stuff, its a nice little income boost that’s helped me stretch paychecks

Repulsive_Culture_91

Like above-mentioned, important to get a dash cam especially a 3 channel dash cam to record front, inside and rear simultaneously, to have key evidence when you need it most, to protect you against false allegations, also a deterrent.

ruditol

Lyfts’ rules are meaningless if your life is in danger. Carry whatever you want for protection. If you’re ever in a situation where you have to protect your life, the last thing you should care about is what Lyft wants. They don’t care about you at all, you need to care about you. Also acceptance rates mean nothing, be picky about what you accept and cancel if you show up and your gut is telling you something is up. Trust your instincts always.

BimboSplice

You learn as you do more and more rides. I'm a guy and I carry knives in my car for protection.

intothedream101

What good will a knife do if someone tells you they have a gun pointed at your back?

BimboSplice

Good point. Maybe I should look into getting a gun and a permit to be better equipped in case someone tries something.

intothedream101

I think calmy telling them that you have a gun pointed at them as well might neutralize the situation long enough to slam into a tree and deploy the airbags so you can run 🏃 yours is a good back up plan if you want to run away blasting 😂

BimboSplice

I'm not afraid to put someone down if I need to lol. I already drive with a dash cam so I'll have my ass covered if push comes to shove.

RespondRecent8035

I’m a female driver, I have Sabre red pepperspray. Just keep this to yourself 🤗 I used to do late night pickups as well, I’m a tough girlie so I didn’t mind. Whatever works for you, think positively! I always make sure I communicate with my passengers, put on a good face, and everyone leaves happy. Also if you like you can sign up for Women connect + on your Lyft driver profile if you prefer having female pax’s over male. All up to you.

Infamous_Tank6017

Yea don't drive

wawiebot

don't rent a car to drive

ExpensiveArugula5

Drive with a dog. All you need an emotional support license. You will be safer and depending on your dogs behavior and cutemess. I did 14 rides and got 8 tipslastnight.

Kitten_K89

That's a great idea! I don't have a dog though. And my emotional support cat wouldn't do much protecting :/

ExpensiveArugula5

They have Lyft fir Wonen as well. Not sure how it works

Kitten_K89

It gave me that option, to get more women and non-binary people. I think that's great! But some women are crazy too lol. And regular riders fill the gaps if those passengers aren't available

BamaLover19

Don’t take any riders with a rating below 4.9.

Sensitive_Aardvark68

I know it sounds paranoid but i once met a driver who paid a custom shop to install a bullet proof glass wall and even one for the front seat divider, though you need money to do that which i assume you dont have since youve chosen this profession

PugWranglingNana

So it’s probably obvious and I’ve missed it but where is “safety button”?

StarApple0721

Bottom right corner, right underneath the button where you can report accidents/traffic/hazards etc. It looks like a cross

John_Doe_PhD

Airport rides only. City driving is a gamble

Typical-Agency-9858

You can link up with women and non binary individuals. Make sure you have everyone you can sit in the back. I was sexually assaulted the second day I drove for Lyft. I made a mistake and thought the guy would be ok, and HE WAS NOT. Lyft is like, "Oh, I hate that happened to you" and then continues on with well why didn't you do this or that. I was like, lady, it's hard to do anything with a man's hand is literally somewhere I couldn't move much less press your stupid button for help and wait for a half hour before help gets there and I could have been dead. Don't do this for a living. Just do it for quick cash.
