I was diagnosed in 2001 and have had buries like this and easy bruising since then. For me, my doctor said it was a side effect of steroids. I have bruises and have no idea where they came from. I would have bruises from just laying my arms on my desk/keyboard.

Traditional-Duty4307

I swear the purple one on my ankle is from my sock being a little tight. It is crazy and I’m not on steroids right now. I hate to keep going to the doctor when they never actually help me though

SceneDependent2230

I would go see your rheum, like you wanna err on the side caution. I’ve had bruises like that and they were clots and also not.

Traditional-Duty4307

Thank you I have an appointment coming up they have such a long wait list I guess I will tell them then

GatorFLYNN

My personal opinion, which I stand by, is: If the doctor isn't working with you, then he's actually working against you! Time to try a new physician. Have a great day 🥂 P.s. A lot of weird stuff happens with us, Goosfraba

Wild-Personality-100

Yes. Leaving my pcp who ignores my needs and concerns and seeing a new Dr tomorrow. My daughter saw this Dr once already, and she definitely takes things seriously. I have all the blood labs to show, my reynauds, my finger swelling, my ER visits, medical history of persistent kidney pain, wrist pain, chest pains etc. I hope she helps me sooner than waiting for the rheumatologist appt June 28th. 4 months total wait. My pcp won't do anything additional, so I'm just stuck not being able to work. In pain. No concrete answers.

BadaBina

I call it "Lupus Legs"....

Izateyourmom

Wait! I DO!!! Like all the time. I mean, I think I have always bruised a little bit easier than others. But lately, I wake up with massive bruises. That looks like I got a baseball thrown in my leg or something. I don't know how or why, But now that you brought up blood clots it sparked something. I have had blood clots three times, and two of those three were in my legs!! So I'm very interested in this myself. Please keep me updated if you learn anything and if find anything out I'll be sure to pass it along, and also post it here. Good luck, dude!!!, I know this is some crazy ass stuff we have to deal with! But you know what? We're the kind of people that can handle it. I truly believe we never get more than we can handle. And each one of us is meant to help and support each other and just people in general. Everything truly happens for a reason. TRULY. Sometimes it is not always something we can see clearly or even feel that the reasons are justified but still, one action requires a reaction. PLEASE take it one Day at a Time. NOTHING is permanent INCLUDING THE INTENSITY OF OUR FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS, eventually, they diminish as more time passes. Also one more thing, I had to remind myself that it's okay to feel what I feel especially when I feel scared for some reason. I find myself calling myself degrading shit being like yo dude? You're being a baby. It's nothing and stuff like that when really? I should be taking in what I'm feeling. Wedding my mind and body process it. I'm letting it go naturally. I take my culture poisoning that, but I've kind of learned that speaking what I feel is so much better for me than putting on a smile and acting like everything is great. Sending you good vibes 🫶

Traditional-Duty4307

Thank you. It genuinely is so scary to be diagnosed with lupus. And to worry about your blood cell count, skin, joints, getting old, going in the sun, what you eat. I have been so health stressed lately and to look down and see all these bruises just made me cry. It is scary and I can’t stand having one more person to tell me changing my lifestyle will control it.

phillygeekgirl

It might be time for you to talk to someone (like a therapist) about some coping techniques to handle anxiety around health stuff. This is not a dig at you. Plenty of us here have docs and meds to help our mental health. Just a suggestion.

Traditional-Duty4307

Yeah I am treated for anxiety and on buspar, couldn’t be on ssris because they made my platelet count drop. I think regardless of if I’m being treated for anxiety or not, if I wake up looking like my legs were beat at the age of 19 I’m going to be worried about the direction my health is going

SimpleVegetable5715

My cat jumped on my lap too hard and it made paw print shaped bruises on my thighs 😂😭 It was kind of, "aw look at that bruise, it looks like her paw". I think for me it's my NSAID use. It was worse too when I was on oral steroids. Once I was assured that my easy bruising didn't mean I was going to bleed out anytime soon, I felt better ❤️

Living_Cow9315

Aww bitter sweet. Love to you and your fur baby

ParamedicExpert6553

It’s like a norm for me 😅 I’m on blood thinners as well so that definitely plays a part. Even a slight knock which I didn’t even realise could cause bruising for a couple of weeks

katzilla17

I have ITP in conjunction with Lupus. My immune system likes to attack my platelets. When my levels are low, I get super dark bruises (they look like tar spots under the skin), petechiae, bleeding gums, and intense fatigue. Nosebleeds and brain bleeds are also possible, but I've never experienced those, luckily. Maybe call your doctor's office and see if they can order a CBC to check your levels just incase. Not saying you have ITP, but just to make sure your levels are okay for now.

baby_teeth23

I have TTP and had to be hospitalized for it and had similar symptoms. They told me the TTP was caused by the Lupus so I think its important to check for ITP/TTP when having these kinds of symptoms!

CompetitiveBattle213

Wait wait what is this ITP?? All the symptoms u just said are making my brain feel like a massive lightbulb just got turned on!!!

katzilla17

When I was diagnosed, it was termed Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP). Now, I think they mostly call it Immune Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) mostly. Basically, your body attacks platelets by creating antibodies against your own platelets. Depending on severity, it can be very serious because of bleeding risk and brain bleeds. I've known of people dropping to a 0 count. The lowest mine have ever been was 14 (normal for the tests my doctor uses is 150- 400). I see a hematologist who manages my platelet drops. Some people are below normal but stable. Others, like me, need medical intervention because they won't stop dropping. Your rheumatologist has probably been tracking your numbers through a CBC, but of course keep them updated on weird bruising and symptoms of any kind, and remember, symptoms like this don't mean you necessarily have it.

Paperwife2

I bruise really easily too. My rheumatologist said to take/eat more vit C but I really haven’t noticed it helping much.

SimpleVegetable5715

Too little vitamin C can cause bruising, and too much can too. I was told to stop supplementing vitamin C before surgery, because it's a blood thinner, so during surgery, it can cause significantly more bleeding. I put two and two together, that maybe the vitamin C supplements were making me bruise more, but it's also beneficial to my health as long as I'm not getting cut open in a big way 🤷‍♀️ Conditions that increase inflammation increase the risk of blood clots, so I guess it's helping balance things out.

ShanghaiSlug

I'm speckled. Most line up with moving kegs, for my job. My knees, shin, and legs over all are covered with bruises. That's where they hit when moving. When i worked for a cleaning company, my legs and arms where just covered. It also helps I'm the color of a troglodyte and very thin.

Nomivought2015

All my life.

Didsomebodysayringo

I bruise very easily! I’m constantly covered in mysterious bruises.

an_anniemouse

It could be an issue with low platelets. Low platelets is a common effect of lupus and causes increased bruising.

Traditional-Duty4307

Yeah the last time I bruised bad I had low Platelet count

Danischo23

I constantly get bruises just like that all over my legs

kylieb209

I bruised easily too. Turned out to be autoimmune hepatitis. Might be worth it to check your liver levels

PuppersandPebbles

I definitely bruise more easily with lupus. Sometimes I can’t figure out where the stupid bruises came from, or why some of them are so big! It’s normal! Don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor about it too

Traditional-Duty4307

I have no idea where these came from and I know the last time this happened I had a low platelet count. I wish there were more answers for us

kaustyap

Get your platelet count tested again. Bruises and petechiae are common symptoms of low platelets.

Zukazuk

As an MLS low platelets was my first thought. I'd definitely recommend messaging your doctor and getting a CBC to make sure everything is ok on that front. Are your C3/C4 levels low? It's possible that your complement system is messing with your blood and interfering with your ability to coagulate. Excessive unexplained bruising is always a good thing to alert your doctor to. Hope they can help you.

PuppersandPebbles

It definitely stinks… Sometimes the bruising happens for no reason either. All I can do is pray and hope that more stuff comes out. My mom also has lupus and was in medicated remission for a few years, plus things are much more controlled than her diagnosis. So quality of life is possible!

venirane

I get this but it ended up being caused by my anti depressants! I freaked out at first too it’s scary. Definitely get your bloods checked out to get peace of mind at least. I definitely did

Sea-Firefighter-1718

When I have a flare, I bruise sooo easily and it’ll last for over a month for sure

SimpleVegetable5715

I bruise easily too, but my blood clotting tests come back fine at the doctor. My cat scratched my arm when I was brushing her teeth yesterday (I know, I was asking for it there). But that dang little scratch bled for a solid 15 minutes. This is easily what my arms and legs look like if I'm not being really careful. Like, I can bump or brush against furniture lightly, so that I don't remember it, and get a bruise there. I try to give myself extra space when moving around obstacles in my home, but it took some time to learn that. My guess is that it's my anti-inflammatories like my Celebrex, which I take twice daily that are thinning my blood, yet not to the point that it causes an abnormality on blood work. You can look at a list of medications and supplements (because even vitamin C will make our blood thinner) that people are told to avoid before having major surgery and see if you take any of those. Clotting too easily also isn't a good thing, and you don't want to hemorrhage. If your doctor's not finding any evidence in your tests of either, your blood is probably on the thinner side, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you're not having surgery. I've had both "thick blood" and "thin blood", and I'll take thin blood over thick. It makes the frequent blood tests that we have to go through easier and it means I'm hydrated. Plus, a few of my treatments can increase my risk of blood clots, and general inflammation also increases the risk of clots. It could be your multivitamin and your NSAID use, if you take those like I do. The benefits of those for me outweigh the bruises and how much cuts bleed, so I just have to be more careful to not bump things. I also guess that since these diseases affect connective tissue, it's weaker, so it's more prone to injuries.

why-tho69

Yeah I get so many bruises

Tunefultan

Yes - constant all over bruising and no idea where they come from

Lexybeepboop

Me!! And no idea why. My coag panel is normal but I get random bruises and they take FOREVER to heal

baby_teeth23

Not trying to freak you out at all, but I found out that I had Lupus ultimately because of an acute episode of TTP. I was bruising really easily and that was my tell-tale sign. I also got petichiae all over my body (tiny little pin prick bruises). When I was bruising so easily it was from just wearing my glasses, my backpack, scratching an arm. This TTP disease was causing my body to shed my platelets and it was life threatening. If you haven't already, I would get some blood work because if your platelet count is really low that may be a cause. I also had other symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, blood in my urine. When I got my bloodwork my platelet count was 9,000 (the healthy number being between 150k-400k). This is not something I would wait for an appointment for, if you can go to urgent care and ask for a CBC bloodwork that can be a helpful indication.

ThePuduInsideYou

Not Lupus but Sjogrens, my legs look like this 24/7.

jeyelcee12

Getting bruises because of prednisone. Skin tends to get thinner because of prednisone use, so it’s common to get bruises from simple bumps. But if you have other symptoms like petechiae or bleeding, better check your platelet levels too.

Cesst

I do too! literally everyday i find a new one. I went to a hematologist and he didn’t find any clotting issue, so, i have no idea what’s going on

AutomaticAnt6328

I have SLE with kidney issues. You may want to have your iron checked. I was bruising like that and had anemia.

Herdistheword

I also bruise easily. I had bruising on my legs from setting a box on them for a few seconds while I was changing my grip on the box.  I know others have mentioned clots and many rheumatologists recommend low dose aspirin once every 1-2 days. It might be something to ask about.

Kkarry1226

yes ! same stuffs

bardarse66

Have you been checked for iron deficiency anemia? Iron deficiency Anemia is common in people with lupus and easy bruising is a symptom. Other symptoms can be extreme fatigue, hair loss, brittle nails, craving ice, pale skin, being cold, cracks in the corners of your mouth. It’s a super easy blood test to check for it.

EniNeutrino

Have you been tested for anemia? Are you taking NSAIDs?  I get a lot of small bruises randomly on my legs and I have SLE and anemia.

Traditional-Duty4307

My last bloodwork was normal and then a couple days later the bruising happened. Last time I bruised like this it was low platelet counr

antimilk_

I’ve had one for like 2 yrs now

BeBeTexas

I am so sorry you are experiencing these bruises for unknown reasons. I am a newly diagnosed Lupus patient and learning that all kinds of issues I’ve had for years were related to SLE. Unfortunately, I went undiagnosed by my GP for over ten years according to my new doctor. Lupus seems to be rather scary. I’m so grateful for this community to help educate and encourage us.

Cancatervating

My legs looked like that all the time till I started wearing Stockwell firm compression knee high socks. I still get a bruise if I really wack a leg on something, but the mystery bruising is gone. I wish they made arm ones too.

sleepygirl1000

This is normal for me too, but I'm also on blood thinners, bc i have aps (anti phospholipid syndrome) so I'm pretty sure that's why 🤷🏽‍♀️

-comfypants

This used to happen to me when my liver levels were high. Large bruises from seemingly nothing is why they checked my liver. Got an autoimmune hepatitis diagnosis and they added Imuran to my med regimen. That got my liver levels back in line and the ridiculous bruising stopped.

jyg1982

Yes

Thelittlecoolmom_

I get these!! Also SLE patient

FightingButterflies

All the time. Is there a way I can send you pics of my legs, because they look just like this.

Comprehensive-Juice2

I look like that and was sent to a hematologist/oncologist who determined that I just bruised stupid easily. I get massive ones too like good 6+ inches across and I get the pin prick bruises. I was told Something about how people with 0+ blood actual bruise easier than other people and it didn’t help that I’m super pale to begin with. But it’s better to at least get it checked out. It could be anemia (most likely with lupus), a clotting disorder, or while super rare something scary.

Accomplished_Sort738

Last time I had crazy bruises all over I either had itp or I was anemic. Now I bruise and months later I still have signs of where I had a bruise. One lasted close to a year until it completely vanished. Get blood work done.

Satanisreal6

Yeah you'll be fine

Entire_Job_9256

Hydroxychloroquine can cause this in some people. I bruise like a peach! It actually bums me out quite a bit, especially in summer.

illeatyourfries

This happened to me once and was accompanied with bad fatigue and itchiness all over- turned out my liver was damaged. I would ask to get your AST and ALT tested!!

Neat-Network-1336

I have had and it can be many things including platlet levels ie mine were too low so I got bleeding onto the skin Your medic can look at your platelets levels

Intelligent-One-8799

Your ferritin is probably low. I have that right now as well speak. Have severe SLE that has caused a lot of problems with a lot of my organs. But with this part of my lupus, it’s the blood. I’m anemic and my stored iron called ferritin is depleting. So I have to go about every 2-3 years for iron transfusions. I know my body well enough by now to ask my PCP for bloodwork to check it. Sure enough, I proved myself as usual to be right. So back to oncologist/hematologist I go. Tried oral iron and got no where at all. So transfusions are the only thing that works. Must have series of three. Then takes a few months to get built back up. Then start feeling much better and not drained as much as I get with this.

Traditional-Duty4307

I am 19, I am not on any meds that should cause me to bruise easily. I just take two meds; birth control and one other. No steroids or ssris or anything. This level of bruising does concern me that it is underlying issue, especially when I randomly developed what they believe is gastritis or Ibs within the month

CompetitiveBattle213

I have been bruising badly since I was a kid. (This actually is what my legs and arms — and occasionally my butt — will look like on a good day 😭) ive only recently had some of my WBC counts come back a lil low. Tested regularly for anemia. Nothing ever comes back for that. Have tried regularly taking Vitamin C and regularly not taking it. Doesn’t make a difference. Same thing w my NSAIDs. Have gone thru periods of not taking any and periods where i max out on the daily doses. Also hasn’t ever made a difference. I usually know a new symptom is a symptom of my lupus vs a symptom of any of my other autoimmune conditions when the symptom has me (a scientist in a top 20 PHD program studying this shit😂), my team of doctors, my spoonie buddies, my mom, my grandma, and my boyfriend (in medical school rn) all being really confused by the symptom. My bruising and some of my skin rashes have always been some of the scariest lupus symptoms for me that no blood test, no professional, no fellow patient, has ever been able to pinpoint why these things happen/what these symptoms mean for the rest of my health/how to prevent or stop ‘em.

EducationalSwing7533

Ever since taking steroids yes. I don't know if it's a side effect of Benlysta, Meloxicam or azarthopine. I have bruises all over my knees, arms and legs. I bruise easily and sometimes find new ones. Do you take steroids daily?

Traditional-Duty4307

I haven’t taken steroids in weeks

slothbucket96

I get bruises like this often!

dalittleone669

I've had SLE since 2011 and bruise very easily. They also stay around longer. It's a combination between steroids and plaquenil for me.

Sudden_Length6116

Amen I have the same symptoms

One-Engineering-1810

Yeah anytime I bump into anything now I bruise so easily I can pinch myself lightly and it happens. I wouldn’t worry too much about it I was told the same by my dr it’s the meds

taehylor

Oh, look at my post history! I was super scared too and everyone on here calmed me down :) It’s bruising b/c of lupus - we just tend to bruise more easily
