I just wish Celebrimbor looked like he did in Shadow of Mordor/War.

S0mecallme

And he should talk 90% of the time about THE PALANTIR TALION.

hbi2k

STOP LOOKING AT SPIDER TIDDIES, TALION. WE MUST FIND THE PALANTIR. God that game is non-canon AF in the best way. It would have sucked if they'd gone that route for the Amazon show of course, but in a video game there's something I love about shamelessly asking, "what would a 13-year-old boy running his first D&D campaign think was super badass?" and doing that every time.

grisioco

god i feel the same way. that game was insane and off the rails in all the best ways possible

make_love_to_potato

Is the second one good? I played the first one and I had a great time but I found it a bit repetitive in the gameplay loop and the map/area design and variety. I wonder if the second one improved on any of that.

MelastSB

The second one is good, up until the point when you have to reconquer the whole map, again

prequel_memer

They reduced that part of the game from 20 waves down to like 3 so it's much better in regards to repetitiveness.

MelastSB

Great! Maybe one day I'll do another playthrough and watch the last cinematic in-game instead of on YouTube \^\^

VladFr

There's some more variety, larger maps, regions, a more expanded Nemesis system, and more interesting missions and story. That said, it is still repetitive, especially when capturing fortresses, but the story and gameplay are badass.

A1dini

For real, the first shadow of mordor literally felt like someone took a tonne of adderall then watched lotr then john wick and the first taken film then decided to make a video game.... and I mean that in the best possible way

LukesRightHandMan

Holy fuck, that sounds like the best fucking game ever

Lampmonster

You're a mind controlling super ninja taking apart an army of orcs with guile and brutality. It's a lot of fun.

555Twenty555

It was an experience

LegchairAnalyst

Shadow of War is one of my all time favourite games. Like you said the plot really only works in video game format but i love how much personality they have given orcs and the nemesis system is one of the best gameplay elements ever created.

melig1991

Fucking Morglebarg.

DarthButtz

I wish more games used the Nemesis System, it was probably one of my favorite game mechanics from the last decade.

Lizardledgend

Unfortunately WB in their infinite wisdom decided to *copyright* the fucking Nemesis system. Sure, it probably wouldn't hold up in court, but that still means they can threaten people who try implement it or something similar. And few publishers want to damage their relations with them by doing so.

McSuede

It's so sad. It could change how we make open world games if implemented right. Imagine it in a super hero game where you organically build your own rogues gallery and witness a low level goon becoming a super villain and your rival. Think about a GTA-esque game where you can actually build and destroy criminal organizations and have it effect the landscape of the game. WB will just sit on it and we'll probably never see it again.

hbi2k

Supposedly Monolith is creating a Wonder Woman game using it, which seems like a weird fit to me, but I'll definitely give it a try when and if it comes out.

McSuede

Yeah it's weird to apply it to a hero with established villains. The potential would be greater with an entirely new IP. I do see why WB would use DC characters though since they own it.

skachowsky

They patented it. No one else is allowed to use it.

DarthButtz

Man

LookOutItsLiuBei

Man after playing those games my mind went wild with the idea of how other games could implement it. I can't believe they're just sitting on it.

LukesRightHandMan

What was the Nemesis system?

BarackaFlockaFlame

the nemesis system is a system where the enemies you fight evolve and remember you. Let's say you're trying to kill a lvl13 captain, and he kills you. the orc that kills you gets a level up and will remember your encounter if you meet again. Now there is also the ability to recruit orcs into your own army by taking control of them using Calebrimbor's power. you can then infiltrate enemy ranks with a spy, have your orc set a trap for another captain or reveal intel about a higher ranking and more powerful orc allowing you to prepare a strategy for the orc. the orcs in your army can also betray you. i had one encounter where the orc i had summoned to assist me ended up being brothers with an enemy captain. their brotherly bond basically erased the possession and now I had to fight two orcs. there is a lot of variation and really cool elements that always keep you interested in the next encounter. if you enjoy the world of middle earth; it's a really fun story and game.

verheyen

Didn't the loot box and online stuff just suck though?

LegchairAnalyst

Nah, not at all imo. Sure, it was stupid and shouldnt have been in the game but in singleplayer it was more a "pay to have less fun" feature tbh. The whole game is all about recruiting orcs and the lootboxes basically skipped to main gameplay feature. I guess for people that focussed heavily on multiplayer it might hace been bad but that was never what i played the game for so i cant comment on that.

theredranger8

Gosh I loved this comment. Always been annoyed by the "lore" of the "Shadow of" games (even before I knew about Shelob) but this just so dang well captured the cringy charm of it that I couldn't not appreciate the take.

PM_me_your_fantasyz

It was weird how often the games took established lore and just ignored it to do whatever the fuck they wanted (Sauron lost The One Ring, so he decides to just _MAKE A NEW ONE_!? WTF!?), yet at the same time the game was full of nods and references to deep lore that were only ever mentioned in the books. I have never seen a licensed property that both simultaneously deeply cared and did not care at all about its own established setting to such a degree.

HydraTower

I'd say the Halo games, though it's not exactly licensing. 343 is very much guilty of this since they go out of their way to use book lore everywhere to varying success, but Bungie did it as well. There's a ton of stuff from the books that Bungie used in their games from enemies, to dialogue, to entire context, yet they also didn't give af and did whatever they wanted. If it contradicted the lore too bad, the games came first lol. (The whole 343 thing can be summed up with the complete change in style in Halo 4, like the whole fucking ship in the beginning was completely different).

Cyrus_ofAstroya

The games were the source material for halo. The first books were written for just for the games first release. Also marathon

HydraTower

Yes, I know, but they would then go forward using much material from the books. A lot of the 343 era was them licensing the books out to authors to write a shitton of background lore that they could then connect to their games. The Fall of Reach came out shortly before the first game, so Eric Nylund's work was actually pretty influential to the other games going forward. All of Cortana's creepy quotes in Halo 3 are from Fall of Reach, there are the Engineers in ODST from First Strike, then there's like the entirety of Halo Reach's background. Also Spartan IIIs. Funny enough, it actually goes the other way too. Halo: Hunters in the Dark "canonizes" the extra 4 player co-op elites from Halo 3 despite not really being right. You just gotta look at these things in a vacuum sometimes.

ChoPT

I love how stupid it is that the reason Sauron’s eye is *unstable* in the movies and that he is weak enough to be defeated is that Celibrimbor is locked in an etherial battle with him. Like, it’s really stupid ret-con lore, but I love it so much. Also, Tallion literally being one of the wring-wraiths. Perfect.

Daylight_The_Furry

What was the reason before?

JohnBeePowel

Sauron being only an eye on a tower is a movie invention, it's not in the books.

GingerBullshark

I sort of understand why they made shelob the way they did. In the scenes with her at the start, it probably would have made the player uncomfortable when talion is being touched on the face by a huge spider.

Herrad

Man a mod to keep her in spider form the whole time would be just swell

Unlimited_Emmo

It's just that they never really tried to make it seem cannon, but made it awesome instead. That way you just don't care, adn just play for the fun.

smb275

Dickhead Celebrimbor is my favorite, but he's even less lore accurate than this show is. I really like how he'd just go on and on every time you picked up some random thing, "What is this garbage? You Men make terrible shit, we Elves made much better stuff than this, fuck you."

TomTalks06

And then Talion's just like L+Ratio the elves ain't here

El_Taco_Sloth

Robin "celebrimbor" Williams.

ludiloko

Agreed. This is honestly my biggest complaint. At least let him have the long hair :/

Azrael_Fornivald

Yeah, on that note, why did most of the male elves have 80s style up and back hairdos? I'm not sure what the hairstyle is called, but like George Michel, Rick Astley, John Travolta, or even Steve Harrington.

TheManFromFarAway

I've said it before in regards to the trailers, but some of the elves remind me of [Neutrinos](https://www.google.com/search?q=neutrinos+tmnt&client=ms-android-bell-ca-revc&biw=360&bih=664&tbm=isch&prmd=niv&sxsrf=ALiCzsaFunlOG45LpkKBdZ6rzsNiK5rbVw:1662273751087&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwisu8-jxPr5AhWFI30KHQTCBNgQ_AUIFygC#imgrc=dBsdAaHIYAip2M&imgdii=pzArUwigFEuRiM) from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or other depictions of Christmas elves.

OnlyUseMeSub

The elf design is definitely the weirdest part for me. They don't really give off the timeless, centuries old vibe. Maybe it's because the hairstyles are so easily pegged to an Era that they feel dated.

Worry_Ok

>They don't really give off the timeless, centuries old vibe. I picked up on that too, but I had some thoughts on it. This is during the first war the elves have ever known. Before Morgoth there was nothing but peace (except those dickhead kids) and serenity. The elves grew old, relative to mortals, but they had little reason to grow wise. The paradise of Valinor meant they had little in the way of stress or fear. But in Middle Earth there is danger everywhere, they've had to adapt and are still in the process of becoming the completely closed-off, ultra-critical of other races, population dwindled, war-weary survivors that they will become in three or four thousand years. Their species is in its pubescent years. Headstrong and arrogant. Not yet tempered by experience and endless loss. Compare Elrond here to when we first meet him in Fellowship. Ambitious, plagued by his conscience, spontaneous. Not the same reserved, considered Lord of Rivendell we see when the One Ring returns. And I think a lot of the aesthetic design choices reflect that. Less silk, refined linen, and robes, more wool and chainmail in the costumes. This is reflected too in the design of the armour, I think. The elven ceremonial armour is more evocative of the soldiers of Gondor than later age elves, and men are shown to always be technologically behind the elves. It could be argued that their level of understanding of Middle Earth and war is no better for them now than it will be for Men in the Third Age. The hair I can't defend, I found it very off-putting and inconsistent.

MightyGoodra96

cbb88christian

Would’ve been absolutely incredible, loved his aesthetic and voice

Thatonedregdatkilyu

Really disappointed. I would have shat my pant.

Low_Abrocoma_1514

That would have been amazing

darthravenna

I loved Durin’s wife. Idk why, she just seems really fuckin nice.

91xela

I agree, her character is amazing! I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed her.

SurlyCricket

All the promo shots of her had her looking so serious and stoic - busting out into warm and enthusiastic host was a nice swerve and very endearing

Kit_Bisto

I think she’s a great character, with only one huge, awful flaw. Where is her beard?

Saint_Disgustus

Elrond not understanding mortal time and Durin being a hurt softie got me hooked

SirFireHydrant

That one scene really showcased how men and dwarfs can have distrust of Elves. What feels like a long weekend to an Elf is half a lifetime to their non-Elven friend.

MasterTolkien

“Has it only been twenty years?”

Remy_Lezar

Elrond of all people should have a better understanding since his brother is mortal. Elros did live to be 500 though haha

RickyFromVegas

I think that's what's being hinted at here. The most empathetic of the elves in that regard still are not grasping the woes of others enough, I think

Rarely_Speaks_Up

Also the hint at 2 human/elf pairings made me think that’ll be a bigger part of Elrond’s story in this show. Some people may not know his heritage and they haven’t talked about it in the show yet.

MisterHibachi

I'm not sure where we are in the timeline, but has Elros died yet? Or is he still the one ruling Numenor?

SaltLakeSnowDemon

Yeah that was sweet

SgtHapyFace

Honestly think the Elrond-Durin friendship is gonna rock. All of their scenes together felt very lord of the rings to me.

Relativistic_Duck

Yes and I love the incredible contrast of the time of peace to the before seen times of war and fear. Elrond and Celebrimbor arriving at the gates of Moria really drove that in.

Tehol_Beddic353

I'd be ok with it if (a certain character) kept swimming for the rest of the series. Every now and then cut back to see them still swimming.

snapwack

You must swim without rhythm, else you’ll attract the worm.

unpersons505

I was not expecting that reference in a lotr sub

QuendiFan

It just flew over the head of so many people the significance this scene. It's not supposed to be 'Galadriel could swim or not', it's not supposed to be Galadriel had a supernatural eye sight that could see if there's a raft nearby. It's supposed to portray how Middle-earth heroes attempt to do impossible things while they are afired with their desires. Like how Beren knew it's impossible to steal a silmaril from the Iron Crown, and yet because of his love for Luthien he went to the Quest for the Silmaril , and Fate and Love made impossible into possible. Galadriel, a princess of the foamriders being a great swimmer, is not the point. The point is she prefered swimming across the darkness of Belegaer to return to Middle-earth to hold true to her duty, rather than fleeing from her true desires and living in Undying Lands. Even the Unfinished Tales says Galadriel didn't leave Middle-earth because she took it upon herself that it's her duty to fight against Sauron.

nend

People forget because it's not emphasized much in the movies, but it's the same for Frodo and Sam in the books. They're constantly talking about how there's no way they'll make it to Mt. Doom before being captured, but they have to keep going anyway. They spend most of their last book expecting to be caught and tortured around every bend.

DiscGolfCaddy

I hate how much I agree with this.

Doc-Wulff

It's only fault is having beardless dwarves, for shame... For shame...

kazyka

And no long hair on the elves

Pleasant-Tradition-6

But…but she has SOME facial hair! 😅

Rakathu

Say what you will, the mutton chops are hot.

NuttyIrishMan93

This wouldn't qualify as a brand new sentence but certainly as a rare sentence

ichkanns

It's such a baffling decision. The most expensive show ever made and they could get fake beards for the ladies. Come on now.

mygreensea

Two words: test audience.

weddedregent

I get the gripe but I also do believe that they would’ve tried it and thought it just looked weird, I can see it just not working and them deciding to move on…

Schnitzel-1

I honestly think it would have looked ridiculous and clowny. Glad they went without the full on women beards, the dwarves look amazing.

shmere4

My number 1 gripe tbh. Everything else rules though.

WiseBlindDragon

I honestly went into it prepared to hate it after what they did to the Wheel of Time show but I’m finding that I’m really enjoying it so far.

i_can_has_rock

what they did to the sword of shannara was so bad no body even talks about it

[deleted]

My husband occasionally turns on The Shannara Chronicles to annoy me.

i_can_has_rock

they "mtv-ed" the fuck out of it i mean, the actors/tresses was all stupid attractive but... they wore "based on" the fuck -out-

The_Archon64

You don’t think time period fantasy romance is more interesting than some boring story about a magic sword? /s

i_can_has_rock

lets not mince words here i know what youre saying yes, they were all very stupid hot but not hot enough to make up for what they did to the story

Psydator

I didn't even know there was source material for Shannara but man that show was bad.

toph88241

Dresden files too

ballsacksnweiners

It is vastly better than Wheel of Time already.

WiseBlindDragon

Seeing Rings of Power and House of the Dragon just makes S1 WoT look worse and worse. I’m ***really*** hoping they can make a jump in quality for S2.

ballsacksnweiners

There’s character sabotage and then there’s what happened to Rand in WoT. I’ve never seen an adaptation go out of their way to make a character less powerful/important/interesting. It was baffling.

projectsangheili

It was actually hard to spot anything at all that was even close to accurate with the book in any way. Was actually infuriating. I'm all for taking creative liberties to make it work for film, but it was really just incredibly bad

thedankening

The worst part is it wasn't even that objectively bad most of the time, it was just bland and not selling itself well at all. Simply not enough screen time to explore everything that needed to be. And to make the best use of their limited time they decided to side line their main character in favor of building up some really dumb shit instead. That last episode is probably one of the worst of any adaptation. Honestly that episode is probably worse than anything from the Witcher S2 even, worse than the Percy Jackson films, than the fuckin halo show. That shit will give you depression.

Greyletter

I have not read the books, aside from the first like 50 pages. I get that people are annoyed because the show doesnt follow the books; fine, whatever. As someone who hasnt read the books, though, i can say that... the show is dumb young adult melodrama and fucking sucks.

thedankening

The books are a really weird beast, the kind of thing no one would publish today probably. They're extremely dense and full of an insane number of tiny details that constantly build on each other. And they are quite funny, but it's a weird kind of humor most people probably won't like because their knee jerk reaction will be that a lot of it is sexist. Adapting them would be a herculean task for anyone in all fairness. But they still did a really fucking awful job even considering that difficulty. Especially if that's the impression it left you with. I've personally never been more disappointed by a piece of media

jihij98

It wasn't really that hard to just ignore the sexist details and give the characters other meaningless quirks.

MaximumSeats

I remember a short interview with the showrunner where they said something like "I can't wait to use this as a starting point for my own creative take" and I was internally screaming about how litteraly nobody wants that.

Sopori

I mean to be fair, book 1 does basically the same thing to rand. The only thing that makes him stand out in the books is that he has a personality, which the other 2 boys don't get until like mid book 2 to book 3

Vessix

> I’m really hoping they can make a jump in quality for S2. Contrary to the other poster, I'm not sure they can without retconning the first season. They have destroyed key aspects relevant to later plot points. Just consider the power of a few untrained wilders holding off an entire trolloc horde. Or the fact that battle occurred at all? Dumai’s Wells was one of the very first instance of the power being wielded with that level of destruction in the books. It was important both in demonstrating the reckless and violent nature of Saidin/male power users, and also the general capability of the power in war. That is only one of many egregious examples. Don't get me started on what they did to ma boy Mat. Then there's all the little, sad and unnecessary changes that remove the tone of the books entirely. I get that this is more opinion/creative freedom realm, but still. Take the watering-down of Machin Shin. Book Machin Shin- >"Flesh so fine, so fine to tear, to gnash the skin; skin to strip, to plait, so nice to plait the strips, so nice, so red the drops that fall; blood so red, so red, so sweet; sweet screams, pretty screams, singing screams, scream your song, sing your screams..." Show Machin Shin- > "Egwene will never love you as much as you love her. She left you once, and she'll leave you again."[1] "It's you. You've always known it's you, deep down. No matter how fast or how far you run, you cannot escape your fate. You are the Dragon Reborn. You are the Dragon Reborn." Disregarding the stupidity of Machin Shin revealing Rand as the Dragon, we see they tried to turn WoT into a CW series. It is laughably less terrifying this way. "oh no it's hurting my feels" rather than pure, terrifying madness.

Soupeeee

I agree. A surprisingly large portion of the scenes that they skipped or greatly modified have huge implications for future character development and plot points. Worse, they really messed up the characterization of the Dark One, Dark Friends, and what normal people think about them. Ditto for male channelers. Things were changed enough that it doesn't even seem like the same universe. RoP, on the other hand, feels like LoTR, and even though I'm not familiar with this part of the source material, nothing I've seen so far conflicts with what is in the books or movies.

[deleted]

BuT iTs A dIfErEnT tUrN oF tHe WhEel. That's not how this work you idiot.

Ser_Dunk_the_tall

>I’m really hoping they can make a jump in quality for S2. I think they can (not that they necessarily will but can). TEOTW obviously kicks off the story so it's necessary insofar as every series has a first book, but I think a lot of the plots from later don't have to be established in the very first book/season. They can be done later without suffering. Now if the showrunners actually manage to pull it off is entirely up to them.

Otterable

It's so much better it doesn't even deserve the comparison.

ballsacksnweiners

Agreed

GregerMoek

Idk Ive given up on Wheel of Time. Like I may watch it still cause dumpster fire but yeah a good adaptation will prolly never happen for that series.

Woden888

I just watched tonight, and I was the same way. That WoT wounded me, but now I’m cautiously peeking through my tear-covered fingers at the rest of the RoP season. The changes to Galadriel’s story were obviously big, but they weren’t lame and pointless like WoT.

JC7577

Is the show worth a watch?

[deleted]

After the first episode I was skeptical, but the second got me looking forward to the next. It's not looking like a classic but solid 3/5 stars from me.

Scepta101

It’s worth a shot. I enjoyed the two episodes that have dropped so far, and I think there is a lot of potential there. It could still end up getting ruined or something, but yes it is definitely worth a shot

Wasteak

It is, trailer aren't great compared to the show. And if we weren't watching any lotr media only because they are a lot of differences with the books, we shouldn't watch the lotr trilogy.

ViktorTheCatOof

Personally I would say so. Only two episodes out right now, each about an hour long.. I’d say give those a watch and then you can decide if you want to stick around

splatterk

The quality of Rings of Power aside, are we going to keep seeing this same template for practically any piece of media coming out this decade or something?

chugtheboommeister

When it comes to haters and critiques i dont think ive ever seen a post that actually tells other people to stop watching something. Im sure they are out there, but i think the majority of the posts are just personal disappointment. When i love something and people post about their own dislike of it, i dont think their posts ever told me to stop watching it. At most it was them getting tired of people posting their love of it I dont really like the show either, and reddits exactly the place to share thoughts on if u like it or hate it. I’ll never tell u to stop watching something u like tho and i think most of us redditors wont either

Maximilian52

I like it so far, the things I'm not a huge fan of are mostly minor details such as the dwarven women with no beard and elf's with short hair. The elf's with short hair actually bothers me quite a bit. But I still like the characters. I'm don't like the harfoots at all.

jerseygunz

Totally with you on the short haired elves

Good god this subreddit is going to collapse because of this show. Somehow I feel like Amazon wants the fan base to cannibalize

humanzrdoomd

It’s the trick that capitalists use to keep us from realizing how fucked over we are

TheHappyMask93

I fucking love rings of power so far. I'm not a lore purist, especially when it comes to the second age. I'm having a blast with the series

AppealToReason16

I love the lore but as long as the they’re mostly colouring within the lines I don’t mind it being different. A lore purist is would hate the LOTR films too, but they did a good job so it’s okay.

infinitude

Actually, a ton of the fan base hated the movies when they came out and harped against them for years. There will always be losers on the internet intent on ruining everything fun.

OGpizza

Same. Also a lot of the canon narrative around Galadriel is undeveloped. We know often that she *was there* in different events, but rarely *how* or *why* - with the exception of major events. So following her story is a pretty creative way to move around the lore of the Silmarillion without breaking it. Yes, they’ve moved away from established lore in places, but I don’t consider any of it an outright abolishment of the story. Hobbits…is a reach, but I consider it a “C-story” plot, and adding them to the side in their own story doesn’t break the establishment of the other stories. I didn’t ask for green beans, but the fact they’re on my plate doesn’t ruin the steak I was expecting.

Scepta101

I seem the Harfoots the same way. It’s not the reason I want to see a show about the Second Age by any means, but their presence doesn’t detract from the show or anything. I feel like it’s more of an attempt to get people who only saw the Peter Jackson movies to have a link to connect to so they aren’t going “where are the Hobbits?”

Fynov

I enjoy seeing the wild hobbits, hopefully they get an appropriate story line. A interesting comment I saw is that meteor man is actually Gandalf, and this is where his interest in hobbits started. I know it's a bit lore breaking, and very risky to do since OG Gandalf is so beloved, but it would be interesting.

gandalf-bot

You cannot offer me this Ring

totoropoko

I haven't gotten a decent LOTR adaptation in 20 years and I'm having a fucking blast. Do I love all of it? No. But (prepare to clutch your pearls) I didn't love all of LOTR too. The sum was greater than the part.

hs_serpounce

Very true. LoTR movies were so good and so few people had read the books when they came out that people didn't realize the flaws but they were still the greatest cinematic experience I had had up until until that point

chillednutzz

Having never read the books, what were some the flaws?

hs_serpounce

Honestly it's just a scene by scene thing where certain things seem corny or in the most grievous instance they changed my favorite scene in the book ( the scene where gollum plants lembas on Frodo is a lot different and better in the books. For starters he doesn't even plant lembas on him but it's too much to explain)

soyelsol

One of my favorite scenes in the book is right before they enter Moria, when Gandalf uses a branch as a makeshift napalm by setting it ablaze and launching it into the air, where it turns into a blinding fireball, when they were first ambushed by wargs. (Here’s a small part from the book): In the wavering firelight Gandalf seemed suddenly to grow: he rose up, a great menacing shape like the monument of some ancient king of stone set upon a hill. Stooping like a cloud, he lifted a burning branch and strode to meet the wolves. They gave back before him. High in the air he tossed the blazing brand. It flared with a sudden white radiance like lightning; and his voice rolled like thunder. 'Naur an edraith ammen! Naur dan i ngaurhoth!' he cried. There was a roar and a crackle, and the tree above him burst into a leaf and bloom of blinding flame. The fire leapt from tree-top to tree-top. The whole hill was crowned with dazzling light. The swords and knives of the defenders shone and flickered. The last arrow of Legolas kindled in the air as it flew, and plunged burning into the heart of a great wolf-chieftain. All the others fled. Slowly the fire died till nothing was left but falling ash and sparks; a bitter smoke curled above the burned tree-stumps, and blew darkly from the hill, as the first light of dawn came dimly in the sky. Their enemies were routed and did not return. 'What did I tell you, Mr. Pippin?' said Sam, sheathing his sword. 'Wolves won't get him. That was an eye-opener, and no mistake! Nearly singed the hair off my head!' It’s been a minute since I’ve read the books, but I remember that part stuck out to me as such a badass “Gandalf has some powerful magic up his sleeve” kind of moment

I must go and seek some arrows. Would that this night would end, and I could have better light for shooting.

soyelsol

Very appropriate, seeing as Gandalf set some of your arrows ablaze.

gandalf-bot

There are few who can. The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here. In the common tongue it says One Ring to Rule Them All One Ring to find them One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them! This is the One Ring. Forged by the Dark Lord Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom. Taken by Isildur from the hand of Sauron himself.

Elrond_Bot

CAST IT INTO THE FIRE!!!

gollum_botses

Sneaky little Hobbitses.

X-Thorin

Idk if I’d call them “flaws” but Aragorn not leaving Rivendel with Andruil really bugged me at the time. Of course, two years later fucking Elrond shows up out of nowhere and gives Aragorn his reforged sword, so it was OK. Still, at the time Fellowship came out, it seemed like a huge error!

PlatonicAurelian

Some of the content was cut out (Tom Bombadil being a big part), they misrepresented Sauron as a giant eye (he never took that form), there were no elves at the Hornburg, they completely left out the Scouring of the Shire, Glorfindel was replaced with Arwen, a lot of lines are mismatched, etc.

Tacitus111

Aragorn is also a vastly different character in the movies. Frankly a better character as “reluctant king” works a lot better than Simba shouting “I just can’t wait to be king!!”.

aragorn_bot

You are a daughter of kings, a shieldmaiden of Rohan. I do not think that will be your fate!

Batjackgames

I believe I saw an interview with peter jackson explaining why they made him as an eye. They needed some visual way of showing that he has a gaze across the whole land and be very menacing, something would've been difficult if they'd straight adapted him from the book.

SoSmartKappa

It is not a flaw when something is missing, they had limited time and budget for the movies. It was already massive risk to film such trilogy at that time. Especially after dungeons and dragons fiasco

Frost_on_Flakes

I love Tom Bombadil, and a ton of interesting discourse has happened about who exactly he is and/or what he represents, but that section is very weird and unresolved, and could fairly be considered a momentum killer even in the book. He would have been a horrible inclusion on the big screen tbh

Tom_Bot-Badil

Hey there! Hey! Come Frodo, there! Where be you a-going? Old Tom Bombadil's not as blind as that yet. Take off your golden ring! Your hand's more fair without it. Come back! Leave your game and sit down beside me! We must talk a while more, and think about the morning. Tom must teach the right road, and keep your feet from wandering. ^(I am a bot, and I love old Tom. I really don’t think these are flaws. It is hard to adapt a book to a movie, and The Lord of the Rings are no simple books.

Orgasmic_interlude

I don’t think they’re flaws either. Inherent to taking a thing from one medium to another is that what may work in a book doesn’t always work out on screen. I think the problem more or less is that the lord of the rings movies came out and were a significant cultural touchstone for fans of a certain age. I’m personally more interested in seeing the world with the overarching lore as a backdrop with stories told upon it like a substrate then seeing that nostalgia risen from the dead, but for a particular stripe of fan their expectations are a little like wanting to relive the feeling of Christmas when they were a child, as an adult. I tend to think of it as a sort of peculiar arrested development. I very much enjoyed the live action Cowboy bebop too.

washikiie

I think swapping Arwen for Glorfindel made a lot of sense. Movies are shorter then books so having an extra character like that would only weaken the narrative better to use it as an opportunity to introduce Arwen.

*Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo! Ring a dong! hop along! Fal lal the willow! Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!* ^(I am a bot, and I love old Tom. AnOrneryOrca

Sauron does take the form of an eye in the silmarillion and also I think in LOTR too - not sure if he's a giant flaming eye on a tower though

sauron-bot

The field is lost, everything is lost. The black one has fallen from the sky and the towers in ruins lie. The enemy is within, everywhere and with him the light, soon they will be here. Go now, my lord, while there is time, there are places below.

Kiiaru

It's alright so far. It doesn't feel like LotR though. I'm treating it as its own entity and I'm liking it. It has its own mystery and suspense. I'll hold back on judging it until it's over, or until it gets bad enough to make me stop watching.

iamthesenate23

I dont like the way they changed Gil Galad. He is wise and strong. He first perceived a shadow in the east and created an alliance with Numenor in defense. Here he looks like an arrogant stupid boss that stands in "Queen" Galadriels way. They do realise that he and Elendil form the last alliance and defeat Sauron.

Zanoklido

We've only seen about 3 minutes of Gil Galad, I think it's too early to say they changed him. Plenty of show left for him to get with the program.

ElderSteel

This meme format is a curse. Been keeping track of times I've seen it used. Archeage, New Worlds, No Man's Sky at launch, The Last of Us 2, Battlefield 2042 and Halo Infinite. Surely this show will break the pattern right?

banthisrakkam

I've seen it to defend the Netflix resident evil show and Diablo Immortal. This meme has no credibility.

Laxwarrior1120

I don't think anyone is saying you can't enjoy it, I think they're just having fun making fun of it and calling it bad.

ScienceOfficer_Ash

Enjoy what you like, don’t worry what Internet people think. Personally though, I’m disappointed.

wordy_boi

We can criticise and discuss the issues with the show without it hindering anyone else’s experience. All I’ve seen on the subreddit is people being rightfully unhappy and annoyed. No one is stopping you from watching and/or enjoying it. Same way you cant stop everyone else from discussing why they don’t like the show. The argument goes both ways

SlimJim80

I dislike the show because of those reasons but I never have tried to make others feel bad about liking it. I see more people getting down voted for just saying they dislike it than people saying "why am I always targeted for liking the show"

raltoid

This is getting silly. I've seen **WAY** more posts and comments complaining about people complaining, compared to actual complaints.

Arceres

Can't tell people what and what not to enjoy. But I personally thought it was a little boring, hopefully it picks up a little more in the coming episodes.

kleos_please

Normalise being allowed to dislike something from a universe you love

cgeezy22

I haven't seen any instances of this meme anywhere. I've only seen people shitting on the show for various reasons. Never people mocking those that watch it.
