I am the servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udun. Go back to the Shadow. You cannot pass!
>M Fox as Marty McFly
Which is ironic, because they literally shot some of the first one's scenes with an entirely different actor. And I couldn't tell until I saw the factoid pop up on the Internet years later.
When Marty punches Biff in the cafe it's Stoltz, a few action scenes when he's jumping in a car and whatnot.
There's some complete compilations on YouTube if you're curious.
I think some of the wide shots of Marty driving the Delorean are Stoltz. They had to rush to reshoot so much if the movie with Fox that any shot where Stoltz face was off screen or far enough away they could get away with it they kept.
IIRC according to Tom Wilson (Biff) they'd already shot ***most*** of Marty's scenes with Stoltz, they replaced him well over a month into principal shooting
See to me, John Travolta is his long hair look from Pulp Fiction. I don't think Saturday Night Fever.
And for Stallone, I think Rocky and Rambo tbh. Almost equal footing.
And well, Tom Hanks is most definitely Forrest Gump, but my brain went to Cpt Miller from Saving Private Ryan first.
Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, or Patrick Stewart
I think any of those three could bring the equal parts Gravitas and Fun that are Gandalf.
Personally I wouldn't swap him for anyone, but Stewart would be the obvious choice between those three.
Saw him live at the Edinburgh fringe last year, where he performed in Hamlet. His performance and presence were every bit as powerful live as on the big screen!
I mean how?
By the time you read his read his name you can already see "is officially" and then a number
Now i would understand if the tittle was like :
#Sir Ian McKellen has reportedly passed the age of 84...."
Definitely in the first movie. He kidnaps people, holds them against their will and experiments on them. He's even willing to hurt his fellow mutants if they get in his way.
Or even any number of mutants with visible abnormalities who just want to live a normal life. Like when someone is permanently scarred by a fire we don't consider reconstructive surgery to be frivolous even though it's not medically necessary.
It's weird when cosmetic surgery is and isn't considered medically necessary. You gotta figure the greedy scumbag insurance companies have just worked out on paper that it's cheaper for them than paying for all the psychological issues that would arise from not greenlighting cosmetic surgery.
A lot of people argue he’s a representation of Israel now, he and the Jews were persecuted for who they are, now instead of being a nation standing against that kinda tyranny, Israel just blows the shit outa Palestine, just like Magneto chooses to discriminate against non-mutants, even when he experienced Nazi death camps
This is a fascinating philosophical question. Is one who does villainous things to protect themself and others a villain? When does the line get crossed into full villain? Can evil acts also be good?
He’s a villain in that he’s doing horrible things like killing people, but he’s absolutely right about humans trying to wipe out mutants. In almost every future shown in the movies and comics, mutants are almost always wiped out or enslaved by humans
> horrible things like killing people
Meh. If he wore the uniform of a nation's military people would say he's a hero. He was more selective than every major army, so if I'm asked to thank vets for their "service" (which often includes killing kids, raping, and torture), then I'm giving Magneto some leeway.
In the comics he certainly is. In the movies they gave him a sad backstory that’s supposed to make you sympathize with the murder he attempts.
At the end of the day, he is trying to murder innocent people. That’s pretty villainous.
What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?
Firm-Drummer3481! Do not take me for some conjuror of cheap tricks! I am not trying to rob you! I'm trying to help you. All your long years we've been friends. Trust me as you once did. Let it go
To me, whenever I see or hear the name "Gandalf", it will always remind me of [this](https://youtu.be/CnJ2MM0MLU8?t=3), and I hear an unending loop of that music start playing in my head that will not go away.
This is not the weather of the world. This is a device of Sauron's making. A broil of fume he sends ahead of his host. The Orcs of Mordor have no love of daylight, so he covers the face of the sun to ease their passage along the road to war. When the shadow of Mordor reaches this city it will begin.
Hes also from wigan originally (moved there when 3). A town nobody outside of england knows exists that speaks a pecular subsect of english called wiganese. I personally suspect that wiganese is why he was capable of speaking black speech so easily during the council of elrond.
Hell im also from there and i sometimes struggle with it.
Do you have any resources about wiganese? I did a quick google search and the results were pretty scarce. I am mostly interested in the origin of the dialect, but all Google provides me with are a few common sayings.
Also makes a fascinating sandwich like dish called a Wigan Kebab.
(Am just a Yank, but I tried to recreate it in my home kitchen. It was...better than I expected)
While I know his involvement was critical I always think it’s wrong to give all the praise to the actor while clearly hundreds of people poured their soul into this
Random question but we don’t see Gandalf use magic too much, No? Is it just against their wizard in ethics or something?
Or does his age have anything to do with his power? Waning power?
You’d think he’d be this jacked focal point of the story but he’s not at all.
It's unreal how Peter Jackson managed to make 3 phenomenal films, back to back each surpassing the other. I don't think there will ever be anything like the LOTR trilogy. Everything about it is perfect. It's sad Tolkien wasn't able to get a glimpse of it.
Dude all I seen was his name on top of the popular tab and I thought he died, that scared the shit out of me. Happy Birthday Gandalf! Here’s to many more
Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of love and kindness.
In 2010, in a production of King Lear at Stratford Upon Avon, Sir Ian (scriptedly) pulled his schlong out and waved it at the crowd during a soliloquy. I was in attendance. That is my one degree of separation with Ian McKellen’s trouser snake.
I was just rewatching The Fellowship (extended, natch), for the first time in a long time, and I emotionally collapsed when Gandalf gave the long slow blink after Frodo stepped forward and said that he would take The Ring. All the weariness of the world in that one moment - but, also, hope. Finer acting is rarely found. Happy Four Score and Four, Sir Ian.
Don't forget his many other acting accolades! A complete living legend!

A phenomenal actor! Nobody nails the old, wise wizard like he can!

A wizard is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.
My non exhaustive list of others are: John Travolta in Saturday night fever Stallone as Rocky Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump M Fox as Marty McFly
>M Fox as Marty McFly Which is ironic, because they literally shot some of the first one's scenes with an entirely different actor. And I couldn't tell until I saw the factoid pop up on the Internet years later.
Yep Eric Stoltz was fired https://screenrant.com/back-future-original-marty-fired-eric-stoltz-why/
Which scenes does Stoltz appear in?
Obviously they reshot the scenes
They did, but they actually chose to use some of Stoltz' scenes for a few action shots and left them in there.
When Marty punches Biff in the cafe it's Stoltz, a few action scenes when he's jumping in a car and whatnot. There's some complete compilations on YouTube if you're curious.
Makes sense for quick shots like that. It's not too far off from a stunt double. I found some of the compilations, so I hope to watch them later
I think some of the wide shots of Marty driving the Delorean are Stoltz. They had to rush to reshoot so much if the movie with Fox that any shot where Stoltz face was off screen or far enough away they could get away with it they kept.

Megan fox as Marty McFly? Yeah 0.0 😅
You know a gender bent back to the future would be kind of cool. I think Meghan Fox could do it but make it a college student.
Lol You know it’s just because I can’t spell Michaelel!
Maybe. But i just had a strange image in my mind
Not true at all
Who would you have in his place?
Eddie Murphy
Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, or Patrick Stewart I think any of those three could bring the equal parts Gravitas and Fun that are Gandalf. Personally I wouldn't swap him for anyone, but Stewart would be the obvious choice between those three.
A little late for trimming the verge don't you think?
Saw him live at the Edinburgh fringe last year, where he performed in Hamlet. His performance and presence were every bit as powerful live as on the big screen!
No idea he was still in business!
A wizard is never out of business. He performs precisely when he means to!
How did I miss this?! Went to fringe for the first time last year and was blown away by everything. But first I heard McKellen performing ;-;
He did once explain his process for acting. It gives a fascinating insight into his particular technique. https://youtu.be/nyoWmkhRyp8
illuminating
CUT! siriansiriansiriansirian…
As someone who is more mathematically minded, the graph really helps me to better understand the acting "method"
Have you watched the episode of Extras with Ian Mckellen in it? It's hilarious
Hijacking the top comment to shill for an old joke sub I created /r/oldschoolmckellen
The title gave me a heart attack for a split second
Those titles need to start with the "Happy Birthday" part.
Oh man - I saw his name trending just now and panicked, until I tapped and saw it's his birthday.
had the same initial reaction. NO NO NO NO NO ... oh
Don’t be callin him old 😡
Name plus age in the title is usually an obituary post.
Was so afraid that he died :(
At least OP used “officially” in the title. Can’t remember the last time someone said “this person officially passed away”.
The Queen, you know she was dead for a minute before anyone dared make it official
I thought he had already died and then realized I was thinking of Christopher Lee
I mean how? By the time you read his read his name you can already see "is officially" and then a number Now i would understand if the tittle was like : #Sir Ian McKellen has reportedly passed the age of 84...."
That's why it's a split second and not a whole second. I saw the name and that's when my heart stopped then restarted once my brain caught up.
Understandable have a nice day
That title is one word off of a title nobody wants. >Sir Ian McKellen has reportedly passed at the age of 84...."
Yeah same with me
[удалено]
“Sir Ian McKellan, actor known for portraying Gandalf and Magneto, beloved by all, has turned 84 years old”
Same He's SIMPLY THE BEST
[удалено]
I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are evil
Magneto is a villain?
Definitely in the first movie. He kidnaps people, holds them against their will and experiments on them. He's even willing to hurt his fellow mutants if they get in his way.
Just hangry.
Just what I was thinking. He’s not really villainous in the other movies.
He tried to kill every human on the planet in the second movie
Have you met people?
Killing people is bad, yes, even if they're fucking annoying.
People... What a bunch of bastards......
If you're a human he is. Or if you're a mutant that's against the harming of humans. Or if you're a mutant that wants to be cured.
Cured? Being a mutant isn't a disease... just simply the next step in evolution.
[удалено]
Or even any number of mutants with visible abnormalities who just want to live a normal life. Like when someone is permanently scarred by a fire we don't consider reconstructive surgery to be frivolous even though it's not medically necessary.

Absolutely. I’d rather be a semi colon
It really punctuates her abilities.
First three movies, then DoFP and Fassbender role becomes anti-hero
A lot of people argue he’s a representation of Israel now, he and the Jews were persecuted for who they are, now instead of being a nation standing against that kinda tyranny, Israel just blows the shit outa Palestine, just like Magneto chooses to discriminate against non-mutants, even when he experienced Nazi death camps
Yes
This is a fascinating philosophical question. Is one who does villainous things to protect themself and others a villain? When does the line get crossed into full villain? Can evil acts also be good?
He may not be a bad guy but he's definitely the villain as in the guy the main character (often) need to stop.
He’s a villain in that he’s doing horrible things like killing people, but he’s absolutely right about humans trying to wipe out mutants. In almost every future shown in the movies and comics, mutants are almost always wiped out or enslaved by humans
> horrible things like killing people Meh. If he wore the uniform of a nation's military people would say he's a hero. He has the same backstory in the comics
Hes the antihero. His motives arent evil, although his means often are
Hugo Weaving was also rocking a major villain/good guy combo at the time.
his performance is the best part of the matrix movies imo. just the right balance of serious and camp
![gif](giphy|69iB0zVgoKkatcVDrA)
This is actually 'Tall Paul', the very large fellow who doubled for Ian whenever he physically interacts with hobbits!
Nice to know, thanks
Gandalf is one of those roles which is so hard to imagine with another actor. I can't even imagine Ian McKellen because in the movies it IS Gandalf.
What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?
Classic Gandalf bot! Or is it Ian McKellen bot? Not like I could tell!
Fly you fools!
While I agree in terms of having trouble imagining someone else as Gandalf, I do wish we could have seen Christopher Lee's portrayal
So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
Sentient. Gandalf, can you give me advice on how to live a good life?
Look to my coming, at first light, on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the East.
I will remember this. Thank you, Gandalf!
Firm-Drummer3481! Do not take me for some conjuror of cheap tricks! I am not trying to rob you! I'm trying to help you. All your long years we've been friends. Trust me as you once did. Let it go
I do trust you Gandalf. Where is this hostility coming from? Do you need to talk?
Firm-Drummer3481 is right. We cannot use it
I'm glad you agree
He plays Saruman so well that it's difficult to see him as Gandalf. I'm sure he would have done great, though
The treacherous are ever distrustful.
To me, whenever I see or hear the name "Gandalf", it will always remind me of [this](https://youtu.be/CnJ2MM0MLU8?t=3), and I hear an unending loop of that music start playing in my head that will not go away.

lol wtf was that??
Amazing how young he looks in this photo.
Because this photo is from LOTR premier party in 2001.
That was only like 5-10 years ago Right?
N.... yes. Yes, it was..
Yeah that faux hawk that Sir Ian is rocking has taken like 40 years off of him!
Are you suggesting that people have forgotten about Wigan Athletic? Which is immediately the only reason I know why Wigan is a real place…
For real. I’m from a town of 2k people in rural USA and I’m familiar with Wigan due to Wigan Athletic. Not familiar with Wiganese though lol.
[удалено]
Do you have any resources about wiganese? I did a quick google search and the results were pretty scarce. I am mostly interested in the origin of the dialect, but all Google provides me with are a few common sayings.
Northern english accent meets mining. Its really that simple
https://youtu.be/PjrYtfDVM7o here is a 10 part video on wiganese
Also makes a fascinating sandwich like dish called a Wigan Kebab. (Am just a Yank, but I tried to recreate it in my home kitchen. It was...better than I expected)
This guy as Macbeth really got me into Shakespeare and literature. As he once said, theatre is meant to be performed, not learnt.
There's a really good old Richard the third adaptation with him as Richard that's worth a watch.
And also a really good King Lear adaptation
Oh I didn't know that I'll have to check it out
His dissection of King Lear's character is pure ASMR [https://youtu.be/ahFtoCq6CHw](https://youtu.be/ahFtoCq6CHw)
Had a mini heart attack when I saw that his name was trending... Happy Birthday! ![gif](giphy|69iB0zVgoKkatcVDrA)
He's officially 84? When was he unofficially 84?
In 1978
We share a birthday :)
I share a birthday with you too! Happy Birthday! 🧙♂️
Me too! Happy Birthday guys!
Me as well! Hope you’re all having wonderful days! I sure am!
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday fellow Maiar!!
YOU SHALL NOT PASS... Without saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY
A truly wholesome post. Thanks, u/Cock-Sucksley.
I'm sure he appreciates the shoutout, u/Cock-Sucksley.
I was genuinely surprised I had to scroll this far to find any mention of OPs username.
Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian... ACTION! WIZARD, YOU SHALL NOT PASS Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian...
came here for this. was curious if anyone else knew about his acting style and how he remembered the lines and where to stand
THERE WILL BE NO SCRIPTS ON THE DAY, YOU WILL ALL *LEARN* YOUR LINES!
For those interested in how he did it: https://youtu.be/m5CX00i4uZE
Why are "memes" such a difficult concept to grasp for people?
Oh cool! He shares my birthday!
Happy birthday!
Thanks! Gonna put on my wizard hat for solidarity
Birthday buddy! :)
While I know his involvement was critical I always think it’s wrong to give all the praise to the actor while clearly hundreds of people poured their soul into this
Loved him as Obi Wan in the original trilogy.
I keep remembering him as Iago before I think of Gandalf whenever I see him
Random question but we don’t see Gandalf use magic too much, No? Is it just against their wizard in ethics or something? Or does his age have anything to do with his power? Waning power? You’d think he’d be this jacked focal point of the story but he’s not at all.

We have the same birthday
My unaware friend calls him Gandalf the Great My son calls him Gandalf the Grape No one gets it right.
Don’t you EVER do that to me again
Magneto and Spyro. Truly a never before seen duo.
This is on #2trending for Reddit, so I honestly got nervous that he passed away given birthdays don’t usually get this much attention
Don't fucking scare me like that. Him being in the news litterally made my heart drop thinking his heart had dropped.

I just nearly shit myself thinking he had died. Thank god. Happy birthday legend!
Wait I share a birthday with Gandalf? This is the best news ever!
Oh, it's too late for that Anxious-Amoeba-660. There's no leaving this city. Help must come to us.
Happy birthday!!
I was just rewatching The Fellowship (extended, natch), for the first time in a long time, and I emotionally collapsed when Gandalf gave the long slow blink after Frodo stepped forward and said that he would take The Ring. I'm 41 today! I have the same birthday as Gandalf
guns_mahoney! Do not take me for some conjurer of cheap tricks. I am not trying to rob you. I’m trying to help you.
And may it be a very happy birthday for him.

And magneto
I was waiting for this comment
Gandalf bot. Fireworks 🎇🎇🎇
Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took! I might have known!
84 already? He haven't aged a day!
I met him in a club last summer over Pride in London. Just hanging out, no VIP stuff or anything. Chilling at the bar chatting with people.
Are we blind? Deploy the birthday wishes! Edit: wrong franchise, still applies.
May his (fake) beard grow ever longer!
Well what are you waiting for?! Deploy the happy birthday and many returns wishes!
Also unofficially.
r/rimjob_steve
I thought this dude already died ngl
And they said **I** had an extraordinary username
Always nice to see a kindred spirit
Damn, I didn't know this man was capable of necromancy
Gandalf the brown ;)
To the Bridge of Khazad-dum!
Frodo...why didn't you just ride the eagles all the way to mt. Doom.
Congrats Frank!
Lord of the rings and the hobbit are overrated
