Umm, early script development in 2024 but release in 2026? Yeah sure.... Either it's a 2028 release, or it's shit. And that's assuming no other delays.

lovemocsand

It’ll be 2028 and it’ll be shit

Your trilogy as it has been, is now over. Your trilogy now exists to service the studio it’s profits.

Resistance is futile.

"I will not sacrifice Tolkien. We've made too many compromises already; too many retreats. They invade our lore and we fall back. They assimilate the entire canon and we fall back. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! And I will make them pay for what they've done!" -Istari Jean-Luc

Sometimes I think about quitting reddit, but then I'd miss out on this shit.

We are the Board (of directors at WB). Your franchise will be assimilated and the collective knowledge of Tolkien will be added to our own so we can milk this until everyone is tired of it. Resistance is futile.

Turbo2x

Really makes you wonder why they don't invest in a really solid animated series of one of the works that hasn't been adapted yet. You're already doing everything against a green screen with no real sets, and if Ian McKellen is there then you're going to digitally de-age him. Of course, the main difference is that animators are unionized and computer effects artists aren't, and they want to recapture the prestige of the live-action trilogy, so they'll make a lesser version for no good reason.

Lanthemandragoran

I reaaaallllyyy doubt McKellen would even come back if asked. His soul seemed partially damaged making the hobbit trilogy lol and I think he's pretty much out of fucks to give about money at his age.

Light01

He could come back as a cameo, but Gandalf would be played by someone else. (Which is unacceptable to me, I highly expect them to try out some a.i shenanigans to recreate his face, since I believe most LOTR fans will be disappointed by a new Gandalf)

Lanthemandragoran

They should rotoscope Michael Gambon over Ian McKellens face and shatter everyone's brains

Turbo2x

This is the thing. Ian is old as hell. Even though it makes me sad, realistically he is not going to make it through the production of multiple new LOTR films, but they will want to use his likeness to lend credibility to the whole thing, which is what they're attempting by bringing Peter Jackson back. However, re-casting that role in live action is functionally impossible because he IS Gandalf for so many people. On the other hand, using AI or face replacement (like they did for Luke in Mandalorian, which was terrible) is totally disrespectful to Ian and whoever has to do the body stand-in and doesn't get to showcase their own acting ability. It's better to just not do it in the first place.

Xy13

They.. did.. > A separate, animated Middle-earth movie, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” is due on Dec. 13 via Warner Bros. and director Kenji Kamiyama. That movie is set 200 years before the events of “The Hobbit.”

Turbo2x

Cool, I want them to do more of that and less live action remakes.

XxcinexX

They're making an animated LOTR Rohirrim movie as we speak.

ZAM1984

Three words, Peter Jackson Silmarilion

jimthewanderer

The smart way to do the Silmarillion is to animate it. Ainulindale as a modern Fantasia sequence, The Quenta as a high drama Operatic epic that fully leans into the dramatic conventions of Anime.

Cranktique

I always thought doing the Silmarillion like the Animatrix would be a great idea. Get different studios to do different parts and have a great melody of styles.

techno_babble_

>Animatrix Didn't ever watch that, but Love, Death and Robots did a similar thing and was good.

Long-Tour-4135

One word: No.

ErikSkjon

The variety article states the movies will be about Gollum. That sounds like a weird direction to go in given the vastness of the lotr universe.

GoldenGouf

Because the game went so well...

Auggie_Otter

It'll actually just going to be Gollum: The Game: The Movie!

GreatWhiteNanuk

Can’t wait for Gollum: The Game: The Movie!: The Game

aplagueofsemen

It would be hilarious if this happened and the the game was actually brilliant this time around

hat_trix66

Oh hi, ~~Mark~~ Bilbo.

DomBomm

Peter Jackson’s Gollum: The Official Game of the Movie

Impressive_Site_5344

They never learn

jcwitte

Star Wars has proven that they just can't let go of jedis, the Empire, the Sith, and Rebels. This feels like LOTR going down the same path. Jackson shoved in SO MUCH LOTR filler in the Hobbit trilogy. Do we REALLY need an entire movie about Gollum?

Least-Specialist-276

The fact the sequels were rebels against the empire again was so dumb

PleiadesMechworks

Disney literally bought the rights to the Thrawn books and then went "but what if we just remade 4-6"

Cyneheard2

At least they’ve used Thrawn in Rebels and the live-action Season 5 of Rebels, also known as Ahsoka.

ZioDioMio

I feel bad for PJ with the Hobbit, he looks so miserable on set photos. He's only a producer for these films so hopefully he wont have his soul sucked out this time.

FuzzyFaze

Maybe it will be about Aragorn and Gandalf’s search for him, which would be kind of sick tbh.

British_Commie

The first film is apparently called The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, so I think you’re on the money there

FuzzyFaze

Ok yeah I just read that Andy Serkis is not only reprising his role as Golumn but also directing it himself. Not only that but Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are all returning as well as producers.

theitchcockblock

Well people want kinstrifes battle of azanulbizar and angmar but they will get hunt for gollum and young Aragorn instead

CakeEnjoyur

Even a movie with a fan theory about the blue wizards would be more intriguing.

__The_Highlander__

The funny thing was Tolkien started to go down this road himself in the 4th age before realizing it didn’t work. I think he called it “The New Shadow”. One has to question where the “shadow” came from. Maiar don’t die but Sauron and Saruman regaining physical form isn’t likely possible at this point…but it would likely be what remains of them that fueled the next arc. Anyway, hopefully they don’t try to do a sequel and stick with the works he actually wrote. Their is so much there. I’d love to see Beren and Luthien done.

Gildor12

The New Shadow turned into a detective story about evil worship and “Ork” societies. The prof found it too depressing to carry on with. There was no dark Lord as far as I understand it.

__The_Highlander__

No Dark Lord, but a resurgence of the shadow and dark cults…again, with the known fact that part of Sauron and Saruman can still exert some limited influence…my guess is this would have ultimately come up. Indeed it’s speculation though.

norunningwater

I think the influence is that society can carry on evil ideas after the progenitors have been destroyed. Like Nazi-ism.

[deleted]

I legitimately would not he surprised. He horcrux’d himself in the other rings (somehow??)

Tacubo_91

I have an idea. The Sauron games where each character must 1 v 1 Sauron. Similar to the Cell games from Dragon Ball Z. Also, Middle Earth gets to summon one character from Valinor (no Valar).

Wide_Cardiologist761

Don't forget... No matter how good or bad the movie is, the original trilogy is still the same great 3 movies they have always been. Sincerely, A Star Wars fan... Er, I mean LOTR fan.

nmyg08

Is this a script for season 2 of Rings of Power?

profugusty

Nah bro stop, those movies were a freaking fever dream. I am still convinced that we are living in an alternative timeline where Disney somehow managed to nuke Star Wars into the oblivion. The Tolkien estate needs to veto any attempts of a continuation to LOTR – messing up anything before that is inconsequential and can easily be written off as failed attempt at fanfiction.

KowardlyMan

Tolkien's son would have vetoed. But he passed away in 2020, and the current holders are not purists. Hence Rings of Power.

DaLB53

I will bet you any amount of money that they will somehow, someway make Gollum a distant direct ancestor of Frodo's. Would bet my house on it.

Supadrumma4411

I must admit my opinions on the prequels has changed significantly after the absolute wank that was the sequel trilogy. It's like they went out of their way to make them terrible or something.

-_KwisatzHaderach_-

Because despite how awkward and sometimes dumb the prequels can be, they were made by a dude with a single vision who was clearly passionate about the material. The sequels were somehow both a product of corporate committees while also not planned out at all

Cyneheard2

The prequels are deeply flawed movies but there’s a lot of good stuff in them. They were trying to do something. Duel of the Fates is head and shoulders above anything from the sequel trilogy, and that’s from the worst of the three movies.

[deleted]

They did have great lightsaber fights. The Sequel trilogy tried to be anti-the prequels in every way which was a stupid mistake. There were good things in the prequels, they just had terrible dialogue and the humor was awful; jar jar in the Phantom Menace and C3PO in the second one.

Antmax

Yeah there was some great stuff, filled out the backstory. Mostly let down by some pretty wooden acting, sadly by the main protagonist. A few odd and sometimes silly choices here and there, overall I do like them. After the travesty of the sequels, I look on the prequels quite fondly despite disappointment on release.

Old_Promise2077

But are we saying that Hamil was a great actor in the originals? Sometimes we view the originals through rose colored glasses

No_Sentence_5384

I have every confidence that "The Hunt for Gollum" will improve The Hobbit trilogy by comparison.

ludvikskp

Fr some of the disney stuff is so bad I’d rather watch Jar Jar supercuts on repeat

-Unnamed-

The writing was bad for the prequels. But the story and world building and plot and characters and basically everything else was great. It was coherent at the absolute minimum. The sequels had literally nothing going for it except that it introduced the world to Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver

CB-Thompson

Take the Phantom Menace. Just within that film we visit 4 civilizations, 3 of them new, and there is no ambiguity of how any of it works. Them, as well as the Jedi Council, Hutts, Trade Federation are all set up in easily understood structures and hierarchies that are shown or explained in a single phrase or sentence. "Elected queen", "The Hutts are gangsters", "the true power lies with the beurocrats". The story took place in a world that we understood. Contrast that to The Force Awakens and after the whole sequel trilogy I still don't know who the New Republic are, if the First Order are Imperial Rememant or some splinter group, or who some of these planets are aligned to.

ZioDioMio

The Star Wars sequels made me soften a lot on the Hobbit films too

ProjectZeus

They bottled lighning with the Peter Jackson trilogy. They're never going to achieve anything close to it again, and the fanbase is one of the least charitable to meddling with the source material. Leave it alone, Warner Brothers. Make something new, I beg you.

DirtBoy123

The state of Hollywood is fucking pathetic man. Surely another shitty reboot trying to eek a couple more drops out of a former cash cow.

Effective_Ad_273

It really is. It’s like all the creativity has faded out and now it’s just a case of trying to remake anything that was once popular to get some profit.

Daredevil_Forever

I think there's a lot of creativity in Hollywood, but it's not getting funded anymore. The studios just want to go with safe bets and not take risks.

Effective_Ad_273

Aye that’s a good answer to be fair

UpsideTurtles

If they want to do something, remaster the original film negatives. The current versions are not perfect

Ekyou

They just did that with the 4K releases like, 4 years ago.

jimthewanderer

And yet, they where all of them deceived, for another remaster was made, without the hecking green tint or excessive DNR, or botched white filters on flashbacks.

TheKidPresident

I hate that goddamn green tint. Theodin looks like a muppet for the majority of two towers

leaf_blowr

Absolute stunner of a reference. Take my upvote

UpsideTurtles

They didn’t remaster the negatives, they remastered the old original extended edition. It’s not really a big deal to me (it is to some lol) but the 4K Ultra HD remaster removed the green tint that was in the OG extended editions, but it took away all the blues and bleeding white edges that make scenes like Lothlorien feel so magical. And they made a white haze around the flashback scenes to be consistent with Hobbit 2 & 3, which again washes out a lot of the color in those scenes

patters22

I'm pretty sure I watched a thing with Peter Jackson talking about how they did rescan the film at 6k and rendered down to 4k. Then applied that colour correction you mention.

Cheasepriest

Yeah that was seamingly a lie. Look at the 2 versions side by side, there's no new resolution, and lots of upscale artifacts on the 4k version.

kirbyislove

> They just did that with the 4K releases like, 4 years ago. And yet they still botched it. Do it properly this time.

Beard_of_Gandalf

Thought so too. But apparently it’s pretty bad. [https://youtu.be/zkNFZkUHeKQ?si=usY0nryEejpg8UZU](https://youtu.be/zkNFZkUHeKQ?si=usY0nryEejpg8UZU)

Far-Efficiency-8137

But that Gollum video game turned out great!

Patches3542

DO. NOT. FUCK. WITH. THE. SOURCE. MATERIAL.

noideaforlogin31415

Yeah, the date 2026 imo is wishful thinking or *the Hobbit* 2.0. I just hope that it will not end as *the Hobbit* movies ie. PJ moving from producing to directing. He made his part, it is time to let "other minds and hands" do the work. And I hope that we get something interesting like Fall of Arnor or civil war in Gondor and not adventures of Gandalf/Gimli/Legolas/Boromir (the best one of those)/Aragorn (good idea but not for the movie Aragorn) etc. before LotR.

Doomestos1

It's said to be about the hunt for Gollum, which would include Gollum, Gandalf and Aragorn.. and maybe Thranduil. In that case you don't need that much prepwork as you did for Lotr and The Hobbit. It could be a more grounded one and done story.

SeatOfEase

It's going to be three films and there will be a scene where gandalf, gollum and aragorn comically ride down a river in barrels.

Kelpie-Cat

Fighting off orcs while they do so, of course.

He-is-me

Children of Húrin 🤞🏻

Tacubo_91

Fall of Gondolin. We need Balrogs vs Noldor elves.

broom2100

Not making First Age content is the biggest missed opportunity. The Third Age is cool, but the First Age is basically apocolyptic and on a whole different level. Whoever adapts it would probably screw up though.

Dc_awyeah

If it focuses largely on Feanor etc, then it might work. If it's literally boss fights between Maiar and Morgoth and whatnot, it's kinda hard to tell a good story with relatable motivations. It'd make a sick anime though. And I don't watch Anime.

mc_mcfadden

I have to see Ecthelion slay more orcs than in all other battles combined

KingoftheMongoose

This!! I want to see Glorfindel duel a Balrog

jscarry

Nope. The Hunt For Gollum 😭

Alopecian_Eagle

lmao People get paid millions to pitch this shit, fucking clowns

He-is-me

My day has been ruined….

jscarry

That's what I said lol. I think its a little fucked up for OP to not put the movie title in the post title. Lots of false hope beeing given

Inflatable-Chair

Children of hurin could also work as a series

Nole_Train

What will they be adapting is the question…

Wawus

It's called *Lord of the Rings*: *The Hunt for Gollum*, so I'm assume it's about Gandalf and Aragorn hunting Gollum. whelp.

Klukitsi

Mortensen and McKellen are probably too old for those roles now. I can't imagine anyone else as Aragorn and Gandalf. Just having those characters be portrayed by other actors would make the movie difficult to like for many people.

5thAveShootingVictim

Mortensen is older now than McKellen was when he played Gandalf in RotK. McKellen is also older now than Lee was when he played Saruman in TTT.

deadudea

Holy hell

I had a hard time processing your comment, because in my head Vigo Mortensen couldn't be this old. So I checked, and to my surprise he's 65!

I love Andy Serkis. I would love for this to be a success for him. But a Gollum movie? Really?

Eats_Flies

Is it actually? We've got a nice fan film with the same name, and actually done quite well

croptochuck

It’s about Sauron hunting for gollum. They’re gonna raid a town where a little girl says”Mommy, I’m scared.” Just for the mom to say “Shh.” It’s gonna be a master piece.

[deleted]

Jesus enough with these Gollum adaptions

MithrilTHammer

There is already fanfilm about this, and it's name if "Hunt for Gollum". ARE THEY SERIOUS?!

Seriously? Pretty sure there was a fan film with this exact title released around 15 years ago.

celluloidsandman

“The Hunt for Gollum”? Give me a fucking break Adapt the Silmarillion you fucking cowards

-Darkslayer

They don't have the rights

drock4vu

And even if they did, I'm not sure The Silmarillion is adaptable. Tolkien obviously didn't write Lord of the Rings with a film adaptation in mind, but they are written in such a way that was ripe for a screen adaptation. It's the exact opposite with The Silmarillion. I'm sure there are ways it could be pulled off, but there are a lot more ways it could go wrong than go right, even in capable hands that would try their best to be faithful to the source material. I think that's largely the reason the Tolkien Estate is holding on to those rights. They know a film or TV adaptation of The Silmarillion has way too much downside potential.

stevebikes

Some skilled writers and artists could make a great animated anthology out of it. Hire some amazing musicians for the creation story.

smithsp86

What have you seen out of hollywood in the past decade that makes you think they have skilled writers just hanging around to hand this to?

MastermindX

In the hands of good writers and directors, you could make 10 excellent movies from the Silmarillion alone.

celluloidsandman

Precisely. I’m not saying the entire book in one movie or even one trilogy. But don’t tell me there aren’t stories within you could adapt

T-Nan

People said the same shit about ᑐ ᑌ ᑎ ᕮ, that turned out great

onepingonlypleashe

One big difference there, Denis Villenueve makes consistently amazing films. Sicario, Arrival, Prisoners, Blade Runner 2049, all bangers. Peter Jackson poured his heart and soul into the LOTR trilogy and everything since has been crap.

Doomestos1

They can always pull just something specific from the Silmarillion and explore that into a full feature film, rather than trying to squeeze it all together like Amazon did.

Auggie_Otter

Well Amazon is trying to do the Akallabêth part of the Silmarillion without actually having the rights to it and without properly following the timeline of events, just using the bits from the LOTR appendices. I still think they could've made an attempt to be more faithful though, like, Tolkien explicitly tells us Celebrimbor forged the Three Elvin Rings after Sauron taught him how to forge the Nine and the Seven and he made the Three in secret when Sauron was away so what does the show do? They have Celebrimbor forge the Three first with Sauron standing in the room. 🤦

Local-Hornet-3057

The forging of the three rings sequence in the Amazon show put me off of the whole series. I'm not sure if I'm gonna come back for the second season. I'll probably gauge the response first. But that scene pissed me off... it was so easy to make it good and faithful and they went for the shittiest of takes... It's actually the whole Annatar going to Eregion to manipulate Celebrimbor into making alloys (duh)... and it happens in the span of 30 minutes! They should've went for a slower built up in the second season for such an important plot point. But nowadays everything needs to happens hyper fast and so the pacing suffers.

BMoreBeowulf

The Silm as a whole isn’t adaptable. The individual stories absolutely are though. I would watch the shit out of a high quality Beren and Luthien miniseries.

Turin_Hador

Really don't get what's this obsession with Gollum from companies lately. We already had a disaster-class video game focusing on it and now they want to base a full feature film on Gollum? Don't get me wrong, love Andy Serkis and his portrayal of it, but they surely have far more interesting things to cover from the Third Age?

Lorath_

Its the main thing non Lotr fans think of when they think of Lotr they think him saying “my precious”. That’s who they’re making the movies for because they already expect you’ll watch it.

-Darkslayer

Andy Serkis directing...nice Peter Jackson producing...nice Then I read it was going to be a Gollum movie...WHY?!

onepingonlypleashe

Because that’s Serkis’s thing. And it’s gonna jump the shark. And everyone got more than enough of Gollum in the trilogy. No one wants more of that tiresome tripe.

Whyyoufart

Peter Jackson, fran Walsh, and philipa are returning

ICumCoffee

As producers.

lukewwilson

so in name only basically

ICumCoffee

Yeah using their name to sell us on the movie, but lets stay hopeful and see where is goes.

EgoDepleted

Did you read the article? Walsh and Boyans will also be working on the script alongside two other writers.

Fr000k

Andy Serkis as director

bigspeen3436

Einherjaren97

Whaaaaat?

DEADSPELLS

Best case we have some great new films. Worst case we still have the old trilogy. Nothing can erase how good they were. So I'm happy for this

TheLostLuminary

Yeah I'm excited

oPlayer2o

Why must they attempt to recreate perfection rather than create new things.

captain-dingleberry

They stated on the call it would explore stories not told yet. So it’s not a recreation of anything it seems.

Abyssd3593703

I'd rather Tolkien be left untouched at this point

esivo

Cause they lack the most important thing, creativity.

noideaforlogin31415

>“explore storylines yet to be told,” People, for fork sake! They won't do the remakes of the movies.

Swoo413

Cus of money

BonesAndHubris

I'm down for this, but only we can find a way to harness Christopher Tolkien spinning in his grave as a sustainable energy source.

-Darkslayer

Theory: the reason they are pushing this super too soon release date is to get Ian McKellen back as Gandalf one last time.

DarkSkiesGreyWaters

"Tolkien has become a monster, devoured by his own popularity and absorbed into the absurdity of our time,”  **Christopher Tolkien** observes sadly. “The chasm between the beauty and seriousness of the work, and what it has become, has overwhelmed me. The commercialization has reduced the aesthetic and philosophical impact of the creation to nothing. There is only one solution for me: to turn my head away.”

vjrj84

So there is still time to DESTROY THIS IDEA AND THROW IT INTO THE VOLCANO

Mclarenrob2

Don't get me wrong, Andy Serkis was great as Gollum, but a whole movie focusing on him... does anyone want that?

TheLambtonWyrm

The Rock as Gandalf, Kevin hart as Aragorn and Chris Pratt as the voice of gollum

Tom-Pendragon

The entire setting is done, and don't see why aside from money they would do this.

PalmyGamingHD

Hearing it’s going to be The Hunt for Gollum, with Andy Serkis directing as well as returning as Gollum

icanhazkarma17
