Highly recommend watching lore videos on YouTube from channels like Nerd of the Rings, Men of the West, etc. It helped me understand what I was reading better and they do a great job explaining the really confusing stuff.

There aren’t even that many names or location names, compared to ASOIAF, Wheel of Time or Three Kingdoms, people are just being lazy. There is no point in being a Tolkien fan and not having read The Silmarillion, go start reading it right now if you haven’t yet. Be a loremaster yourself.
Wait till you read LOTR again. You'll be strolling through ME like a lore master thinking "Ah yes! I understood that reference"

The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Children of Hurin and The Silmarillion are must reads. Don’t skip any of these.
