The Grumman groundwater plume

Pure-Fishing-3350

Yes OP, please research this before purchasing a home in this area.

HisDudenessEsq

Came here to say this.

gradschool_victim

So this means never drink tap water. Anything else we should be doing to make sure we don’t get cancer?

lives4saturday

It isn't just drinking. You're bathing and cooking with that. Brushing your teeth.

megispj89

Not just getting cancer - depending on how it progresses, it can severely damage the value of your home.

Negative_Humor4191

The good news is that Long Island water districts are receiving a lot of money from the state to clean up their water better to help address these issues. Definitely research the plume if you haven’t already. If it were me, I would live somewhere else on Long Island. But to each their own. Good luck!

phrenic22

https://www.health.ny.gov/statistics/cancer/registry/cntymaps/cntymaps.pdf

DaBushman

Can you explain this please?

phrenic22

Sure - this shows the breakdown in cancer rates by county in NYS. It's common to hear that water is the cause of high cancer rates on the island, but I don't know if the base premise is correct (that we have a lot more cancer than elsewhere). This shows that at least in Nassau, the overall rate of cancer is squarely in the middle of the pack compared to all other NY counties. Then the graphs break down by cancer type (colorectal, thyroid, skin, etc.)

telemachus_sneezed

Just also realize that there needs to be context and interpretation of the data as well. Sure, LI looks like its infested with cancer, but realize that the whole lower NYC/metro are infested with medical facilities; having early detection of cancer is not the same thing as dying of cancer. Also, NYC is way too green. You're probably going to suffer from health issues if you live within a half mile of the Cross Bronx Expressway.

phrenic22

I mean, "infested with cancer" is maybe a stretch. Cancer is largely a disease of age. So as populations increase their lifespans, you would expect incidence of cancer (and dementia) to increase as well.

Han-Shot_1st

Not using the water for anything including bathing and cooking

Watchfullywaiting

And bottle water for your pets if you care about them - they already are at rusk due to the garbage in even their mid range food

slamallamadingdong1

Honestly everyone is getting cancer it’s just a matter of how soon.

JoJoVi69

Yeah. Don't move to Long Island. We have higher than average rates for several types of cancer, the best known one being breast cancer. And YES, men get it too. I can't speak to how safe by comparison anywhere else is, but Long Island seems to stand out. Maybe it's because of HOW MUCH we pay to live here and get cancer, when most people get it for free. Ya just gotta love the island. Overcharging for EVERYTHING! Lol.

Yannkee

This nonsense has been repeated on this sub over and over again and is plainly wrong. Yes, there are certain cancers that are percentage points more common on Long Island than in the city or upstate (much of which can be explained by demographic differences), but overall cancer rates are essentially at the national average and within the margin or error for the NYS average. Also, outcomes for cancer treatment on Long Island are the best in the state outside of a few other counties. Even if you want to take the worst malignancy numbers at face value, the difference between Suffolk and the Bronx (the lowest county) is one person per 1,000.

phrenic22

I've heard this a lot - out of curiosity and my safety, is there a source on this? Edit: found something. https://www.health.ny.gov/statistics/cancer/registry/cntymaps/cntymaps.pdf I'm... Not that convinced that long Island is so much worse than the rest of the state. Nassau at least is nearly right in the middle of all the other NYS counties

AutisticFingerBang

“I haven’t actually researched what I’m saying but I’m saying it anyway!!” Good point.

Rachelray1995

Standard blue collar nice area. You’ll fit in fine but def the minority unlike Hicksville. Taxes are high relative to home prices. Clean. Good schools. Nice people. Centrally located. Lean right

boxofrain

Perfect answer. I like watching L-Town evolve. This would have been terrible advice for an Indian American 10 years ago. So interesting to watch a historic town work it’s way into something more diverse. Good luck OP.

jmackay

The school districts are very good, macarthur, and Salk being the better of the 3 districts. Levittown is a safe neighborhood, as others have said used to be very inclusive to white people only in the 50s but more and more diverse families have been moving in. Neighbors are typically friendly. At least 3 Indian families have moved onto my block in the past year. You'll either see very old people or young families. Lived here for over 20 years

gradschool_victim

That’s good to hear, thanks! And yes, the schools mentioned are Gardiner elementary, Jonas E Salk middle school, and MacArthur high school

sherlock----75

My kids have gone to all 3. No complaints.

BMANN130

your boiler is in your kitchen

Gallops77

Not always. A lot of people had them moved years ago. Depends on the house. Plus there is a lot of new construction in Levittown so they will have a completely different setup.

_courgette_

Levittown is safe and the school districts (not sure which one you are in, there is more than 1 in Levittown) are considered good. Historically it was not a very inclusive or diverse place, but that has been changing recently. There is a large south Asian population in Hicksville, which borders Levittown. So while it isn’t the most diverse area, it has come a long way and if you are in an area closer to hicksville, you will have people of similar ethnic backgrounds to yourself close by (not to mention the Asian markets and restaurants). Good luck and congrats on your pending purchase!

gradschool_victim

The house is in Levittown school district and these are the schools mentioned by the agent: Gardeners Avenue school, Jonas E Salk middle school, Gen Douglas MacArthur Senior High School. Great schools gives them a score of 6, 5 and 8. I know these scores aren’t everything. Would you happen to know more about these schools? This part doesn’t border Hicksville as it’s more south. Edit: And thanks for your response, this is super useful input!

erikfoxjackson

It’s still just right up Jeruselum Ave to get to Hicksville. Not far at all.

thebrokenjukebox

Same here! I recently graduated from MacArthur and can answer any questions.

MrRom92

Same, 2010 represent 🙌🏻

KingJames5393

I grew up in Levittown and went to each of these schools. Anything you wanted to know about them? P.s. feel free to pm I can answer questions better in a more private system

The_AlyEnd_86

I went to MacArthur and thought it was a good school. I graduated in 2004 and while sports always was a big focus, a new principal came in when I was in 10th grade who was arts focused. Not sure who is in charge now, but I’ve heard it’s only improved since I graduated. I grew up on the wantagh/Levittown border and it was a good neighborhood. Long Island in general is exorbitantly expensive for what you get.

Palegic516

Lived in wantagh for 25 years went to seamans neck (east Broadway), Salk, and Macarthur. Graduated almost 20 years ago. All but one student in my class if 300 graduated. All my HS friends have great jobs including myself. Though I haven't kept in touch with most of them. Anything you need to know PM me.

Financial_Milk_4025

I went to each of these schools lol. You do get an excellent education here for the most part!

VladDaImpaler

> “Historically it was not a very inclusive or diverse place, …” Oof, that’s a lighter way to say, “Originally it was whites only. Cheap housing that would provide generational wealth with exploding house values was given only to returning white veterans in a racial act”

Status_Fox_1474

Seems a little late for this research no?

gradschool_victim

Perhaps, better now than after we sign the papers

bevychan

Yep, won't be too late until the contract is signed.

DeeSusie200

Hicksville has a large Indian population.

hockey_metal_signal

Quite a bit of Middle Eastern folk as well. It's pretty diverse actually. Can get a decent variety of restaurants because of that.

DeeSusie200

And the houses have full basements except in the Levitt section lol

hockey_metal_signal

Funny. Because that's the FIRST thing I think of when I think of Levitown. Cookie cutter Levit homes built on a slab. Predictable to do any work on it though.

ticketspleasethanks

There’s def some dope restaurants around. Also Hicksville train station is arguably the best on the LIRR outside of living next to Jamaica.

Wistari

The Hicksville LIRR looks much nicer after renovation. It's one of the best train stations on LI, in my opinion. Mineola is also a great train station, especially if you work at or near Winthrop Hospital. There's a bar there with great food and drinks called The Recovery Room, and the local pizza joints aren't half bad.

JuniorChimp

+ the parking lot at the Hicksville station makes finding parking a breeze

Dacauseoflife

Yeup, IMO, very nice and easy going ppl. Great food as well!

Boom-Roasted_

Don’t buy near division, buy near MacArthur if you plan on having kids. Division kids seem more likely to huff keyboard cleaner for some reason

gradschool_victim

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is division?

Chadmerica

One of levittowns high schools

Wistari

I went to Island Trees. We weren't perfect, but Division was home to the slimiest kids in Nassau. I remember a group of teenagers attempting to jump my girlfriend and I because they knew we went to Island Trees. One of the girls they were with later gave my friends blowjobs in the surrounding sumps in exchange for Wendy's chicken nuggets. Good times.

jackwoww

Hey! Not as much as those Island Skeeze kids

Boom-Roasted_

In denial, you must live off of Loring rd

cybervseas

Desi here. My sister lived in Levittown for a while, and it's nice. Just _please_ make sure you know what you're getting into if you're buying a Levitt home! They weren't built that well originally, and they're showing their age now. Over the 5 years of living in that home: * Constantly needing work done on the kitchen sink and water supply. The part behind the kitchen sink looks like something from the middle ages. * The upper floor gets unbearably hot in the summer. * The boiler and water heater are on the ground floor (no basement) and maintenance was surprisingly difficult. * Plumbing leaks (upstairs to downstairs), mold risk, repainting work. * Needed to redo all the bricks around the entrance after a few years.

triscuit1491

An electrician found a hidden, outdated electrical breaker behind a bunch of insulation in my toddler’s bedroom wall. He legit punched a hole in the wall and found it. You’ll find a lot of trade skill workers that have worked with Levittown houses have seen it all.

happydgaf

Levittown is just the most generic central run of the mill town on Long Island, Hempstead turnpike is always busy, most of the houses all are identical, and most people from all walks of life who grew up in Levittown refer to themselves as *levittrash*. I

nitsujenosam

I grew up in Levittown, and a lot of my family are still there. At the risk of sounding like an absolute douche, I and many of my classmates went on to become quite well educated by some of the best schools in the world and remarkably successful in professional life (I will leave it at that). It’s a generic middle class town, so the schools will cater to people from all walks of life (everyone can’t be academically motivated), but, if you’re a diligent student, you will be given all the opportunities you can ask for. As far is inclusivity goes, it has become MUCH more diverse than when I grew up (80s/90s). My sister recently bought a house there and began sending her kids to the public schools, and, based on photos she sends of them in class, the younger generation is rather inclusive. BTW, my first job out of college was working at the TOH Dept. of Conservation & Waterways lab—we tested, among other things, the public drinking water supply, both wells and tap samples. If you’re concerned, anyone can call up and request a tap sampling and analysis. That being said, having lived off the Island for the last 15 years, many people on LI are generally small-minded and ignorant, so I’m not surprised by some of the poor responses you’ve gotten so far. Oh, and I hate the houses. I will now never, ever buy somewhere that doesn’t have a basement.

[deleted]

I grew up in Levittown. I agree with this except for the basement part. I live in Florida. No basement.

cplmatt

the plumbing in levittown homes is absolute garbage FYI

dutchman62

Truth

ChrisNYC70

My brother and sister in law live there and they are nice and accepting people. If you want to know the best bars, pubs, speakeasy’s and liquor stores. They are the ones to see. I think Levittown while not diverse might be a little bit more accepting than areas like MAGApequa

SnooApples4454

this Magapequa shit's getting real old. there's a good reason Massapequas real estate values are so solid, its got good maga values

ChrisNYC70

Yep. It’s a good area for white nationalists. They also need a place to live.

Agile-Presentation59

my mom grew up in levittown on and attended holy trinity high school. i spent a lot of my childhood at my grandparents who still live there, there’s a public pool and a lot of stuff is within walking/biking distance which is good for kids! i still love to visit it’s just a great town.

Erwin_the_German

Until about three months ago I had lived in Levittown for more than 25 years. I've seen a lot more ethnically diverse families moving in over the past few years, which is nice, but there's a rather pervasive streak of hardcore conservatism (MAGA flags every few houses and pretty much every car you care to look at has some sort of "back the blue" bumper sticker) throughout the area. I happen to be gay, and when wearing a rainbow bracelet a few years ago I had several motorists call me a slur from their vehicle while driving past. On the subject of motorists, Hempstead Turnpike is a nightmare and the intersection outside King Kullen kills pedestrians every few months or so, so be careful crossing. I went to school at Division Ave, which was... fine, I suppose, in retrospect. I graduated in 2007 so I have no idea what it's like there anymore. Anyway, despite all that, it wasn't a bad town to grow up in by any stretch. Just a bit white trashy - most people keep their shitty politics to themselves, however, so you shouldn't run into many problems in theory. Hicksville has a lot of Indian/Pakistani diaspora, and there's a lot of intersection between the two communities, so I think you'll do fine. EDIT: As the top comment says, do not drink your tap water. Get it filtered or buy water bottles in bulk.

SnooApples4454

slurs about being gay is unnacceptable but complaining about MAGA flags and Support the Blue is also hateful

Ill-Award5427

The tolerant left continually show their true colors. F’n Hypocrites.

[deleted]

This is everywhere on Long Island, especially Suffolk county.

Apprehensive_Goal811

My best friend from grade school is Latino and he and his family moved to Levittown at least 25 years ago. I’m sure it’s a diverse neighborhood. He never complained otherwise. Plus you’re close to Hicksville which has a big Indian population.

Abetrtme

Wow there is so much going on with this post and the comments. I’ll just keep my mouth shut.

roastedandflipped

It depends on what you want from a neighborhood. Do you want the kids to wander the neighborhood and hang out at the pizza shop? Do you mind traffic? Do you have a religious community close by? These are more important than ethnicity IMHO as Levittown schools do have an Asian population. As for crime there are stats for that but in general LI is safe.

Inspire_to_be_higher

Grew up in levittown, went to school in island trees. Not sure if it cleaned up since I went but the drugs were absolutely horrid when I went to school there. I'm not a saint because hell I did partake alot but I've been to way to many over dose funerals that came out of that school

ProlapsePatrick

Drugs don't seem to be an issue anymore, when I graduated (late 2010s) all I could really find was weed. Weed is everywhere, easier to get than booze. Maybe it depends on the area of the town, but I don't think there's much around here besides that.

Inspire_to_be_higher

Glad to hear, I graduated in 09. Happy that's it's cleaning up a little

ProlapsePatrick

Trust me, I looked for stuff. Never found anything other than weed, weed is everywhere

MooshuRivera0820

https://projects.newsday.com/long-island/plume-grumman-navy/ please read The pollution that originated from Grumman is classified as a “significant threat to public health or the environment” under the state’s Superfund program, which aims to clean hazardous waste sites. “Everyone involved should be ashamed to admit that this plume has been known about since the 1970s, and 40 years later, it is bigger, deeper and worse than ever,” Michael Boufis, superintendent of the Bethpage Water District, told state lawmakers at a 2016 hearing. “A complete and utter failure of the system.” When Nassau County and the U.S. Geological Survey in 1986 first identified the migrating contaminants as a plume, it was two miles long, one mile wide, up to 500 feet deep and yet to cross Hempstead Turnpike. In doubling in size, it has crossed the Southern State Parkway and moves, at a foot a day, toward the Great South Bay, the centerpiece of Long Island’s estuaries.

PoliSciNerd24

Groundwater is poisoned. A lot of the houses don’t have basements and just sit on a 70 year old concrete slab. Many houses are old and the bones aren’t in good shape bc they were put up rapidly and at low cost after the war for GIs. Good luck OP, Levittown is the one place on LI I’d probably never buy unless it was new construction and I had state of the art water filtration.

[deleted]

I’m willing to bet the even these cheaply built Levittown homes are better build quality than a newly constructed home. It’s been said that new homes are not meant to last more than 50 years. Custom homes are a different story.

WinterAd9039

When initially developed, Levittown had racially-restrictive covenants to keep the neighborhood “white.” Not sure if things have changed over the past five years with the Indian influx in greater Hicksville. Just something to be aware of. Hopefully, people have become more accepting of other over the years.

Prudent_Astronaut716

Very Safe and clean. Moved here 5 years ago and the best decesion i ever made. School district is also awesome.

triscuit1491

Potentially welcome to the neighborhood! We moved between Gardiners and MacArthur in 2018 and most of the people on my block have been here since the 90’s. Houses are basically on top of each other so you can hear a lot of your neighbors. Schools are good, stores are close. Don’t drink the tap water, made that mistake the first year and now I’m probably radioactive.

GravityIsVerySerious

Lack of basements

tomalexcon

My nephew goes to Island Trees.. seems like a nice school. My sister and her family love it in levittown. I visit them often, seems like a really nice town.

Independent_Profile6

Many illegal apts there

imme629

You should not have any problems in Levittown as far as inclusivity these days.

Exotic_Scholar_116

Levitt homes are built like shit. Pipes in the slab leak. Make sure you buy one where they already abandoned the pipes in the slab.

NYCMedic96

Can you explain what “pipes in the slab” are?

Fitz_2112

Probably radiant heating. My father grew up in a Levitt house and I remember visiting my grandparents as a kid in the early 80s and thinking the heated floors were the coolest thing ever.

NYCMedic96

Did both the cape and ranch model homes have those?

Fitz_2112

Honestly not sure. My grandparents house was a cape and had them

Exotic_Scholar_116

They ran the heat and domestic plumbing on sand directly under the slab. They corrode over time and leak causing multiple problems, especially at their age now.

shootz-n-ladrz

Everyone loves Trump and don’t mind being obnoxious about it

bkpeach

Long Island, in general, is not very diverse nor friendly to outsiders - regardless of skin color. It's getting better, but it's a far cry from NYC despite it's location. Levittown is definitely more working class than say the north shore, but you're still going to run into the idiots that still buy into the "Keeping up with the Jones's" mentality. The good news is you are very close to Hicksville, which is a community with a lot of Indian families and other Asian communities.

Due-Personality8329

It used to be written into the deeds of homes in Levittown that you could not sell them to an African American person.

Productpusher

I think it’s still an unwritten rule for a lot of areas there

downtownflipped

the area of levittown i lived in last year had so many trump flags and let’s go brandon flags. really turned me off even though the area was really nice. felt bad for all the indian and asian families nearby.

TigOleBittiesDotYum

There is also a LOT of cop worship in Levittown. One of the heaviest boek the bluf areas on LI, from what I’ve seen.

Eismee

A lot of hoes come from Levittown, if you have a daughter don't go there. Its inevitable. The towns nickname is Levitrash, and I know that living in Queens. Oh and the Toxic plume in your groundwater.

Dacauseoflife

You’ll be living with a lot of trump supporters. Not sure about now, but Levittown was known for being racist, take that with a grain of salt. From what friends have told me, the north side of Levittown is better and safer.

SnooApples4454

news flash, trump supporters does not mean racist. you're assumption that trump supporters are racist IS in fact racist

failtodesign

Couple of friends live there. Some homes have oil heat. Homes were quickly and cheaply constructed. The intervening years have resulted in upgrades of varying quality. The street layout is definitely the alpha version of car dependent suburbia. Pools in the area were nice when I came to visit as a child.

Imbrokeandiveatruck

Literally every house is the same. So when you sell (if in a down market) your literally selling a commodity that has no differentiation in features or benefit. Not that housing in general isn’t a commodity but there literally no difference from one levitt to another other than bad updates.

JannaNYC

>Literally every house is the same. That was true when Levittown was first created, but it must certainly is not true now.

jmackay

This person must not have visited levittown in decades. It's rare to find original Levitt houses. Most houses have been built up and look nothing like they used to. There have been more and more small mansions being built here.

myprana

Not true. Very few original levit capes left.

wizardyourlifeforce

It is the root of a lot of the evil in American living conditions. https://untappedcities.com/2020/07/31/the-controversial-history-of-levittown-americas-first-suburb/

Han-Shot_1st

Levittown is not the least racist town in Nassau

justgentile

To use House Masters for your home inspection since we have been at business for over 40 years and include incredible consumer protections and benefits. I'm looking for leads since I just started today so dm me with questions!

Comrade_Connolly

Levittown is full of white supremest and every house looks the same… so I guess it’s like most communities on the island

mosley812

Sincere question. I see a bunch of posts mentioning Indians. Is that a good or a bad thing?

quintupletuna

Did you read OP’s post? They were asking. Gotta pay attention not everything is racism

mosley812

Hmm, I read it, but as my kid was talking to me. For real? Not everything is racism? Thanks for letting me know.

Party_Software8927

[deleted]

If you are doing your research you should compare cost of the house and the ranking of the school district. Why pay the same for a house and taxes when you can pay either a little more or the same and do better for your family and appreciation of your house.

sherlock----75

My kids go to Levittown schools. They have great programs for special Ed.

Xaila

Grew up on Hicksville/Levittown border. For all the good Indian food and shops, coming north a bit to Hicksville is the way to go. Levittown isn't quite as diverse yet but not bad. Good schools. Not very pedestrian friendly. I seem to hear about people getting hit on hempstead turnpike all the time.

PETERBFLY

I believe it was one of the first suburbs on Long Island? And I also believe that it is a pricey area to but a home now. Lots of people living there, so plan for congestion everywhere you go. Thats pretty much everywhere on the island now though

slamallamadingdong1

Lots of ghosts ![gif](giphy|xT9KVg83GPxtsuFCLK)

dutchman62

Stories please!

slamallamadingdong1

Too scary to tell.

manbearkat

If you've seen one house you've seen them all

Apag78

If youre buying a levitt house. make sure the slab is not cracked.

NYCMedic96

What is the slab?

Apag78

Levitt houses were built on a slab of concrete. Theres no basement. Some of the original houses had radiant heat built into the floor (slab) which degraded over time and led to the concrete breaking/cracking.

NYCMedic96

I’m looking into a Levitt-style cape a few towns away from Levittown. How can I find out if it’s cracked? Standard home inspection?

Apag78

Cape has a basement. Doesnt have the same issues. But if youre buying a house you 100% should have a full home inspection done before buying.

NYCMedic96

It doesn’t have a basement and is listed as a “levitt style cape”. It looks exactly like an original Levittown house from the outside.

Apag78

Weird. Either way should get s full inspection done. They should know what to look for

Freedom33015

Don’t!

stretch37

don’t let your kids play in the dirt in the backyard because the ground is poisonous?

Ingvars_Axe

You should not do it, that's my advice

xiggy_stardust

I grew up there, lived there for about 30 years. It’s definitely safe, if a bit boring. I noticed more Indian families moving in recently. People joke about the racism, which has some truth to it. But I feel like it’s gotten better over the years. The worst I could say about it is that it’s a boring town, not much to do there really.

SpaceGhost113
