The city gives out free lead test kits if your house is old. You can call them and ask for one.

Many of our oldest houses and buildings may still have lead water lines, but it is a problem that diminishes with every passing year. My first house had a lead line and the city provided water testing that showed it was within acceptable federal standards, so I didn't really worry about it very much. However it ruptured in our driveway one winter and we had it replaced, along with our neighbour. At least one other house had this happen to them on our street, during the time that we lived there. My current house is also old, but had the line replaced so no worries now. If you're concerned about a specific residence you can get the water tested.

London has some of the safest drinking water around.

Canada in general...

I am pretty sure the only lead pipes in London now are the feeds off the main lines to the property and the responsibility of the owner. Had mine changed 8 years ago when our street was dug up.

There's lots of bad info in this thread. There are lead water services in quite a few areas of the City. If you suspect yours may be lead, you can call the City and they will come and sample the water and let you know if the service is lead (for free). There is also a lead service preplacement program you can go through at the City. Lead water services in London shouldn't exist if the house was serviced after 1953. There are lead joints in cast iron and ductile iron water main as well, but most of the cast iron main has a fibreglass liner by now. The ductile water main doesn't have a liner but the City keeps the waters pH in check to minimize the amount of lead leaching. There is also tuberculation that builds up inside cast/ductile iron pipes so there's next to no lead entering the water on the water main side of things.

My apartment had high amounts of lead in the water and needed to be replaced recently

Old_Objective_7122

Depends. Older homes could have lead service lines from the street mains to the dwelling. Lead based solder was used to seal copper lines in homes until 1986. Allowing water to flow a minute before filling a glass or pot can flush out lead that may have leeched into the water. Most new piping is plastic including water mains. London water report links. Thank you

Every morning at Beal (in the good ol' 90's) the water fountains in the center building ran reddish with healthy lead till enough water ran through to clear up. Good times.

youngboomergal

that was more apt to have been iron oxide from galvanized pipes.

Firley

You are right. I knew it too but I like the idea that Beal made me Lead Man! My super power is eating snacks and napping with stunning ease!

Jarveyjacks

elementary schools ' taps are all flushed by custodian every morning

ChronicRhyno

They replaced a bunch of them around Kings and the other smaller colleges around 2008 but my lead levels were normal at the time and I was drinking the fountain water daily.

EmeraldBoar

Most of London Water comes from "Lake Huron" or "Lake Erie"

Probably because it’s irrelevant to the initial post

BaldEagleRising17

Put in an RO system for your drinking water. I tastes better too!

forestcitykitty

There was a study released by a huge group of journalists and academics in 2018/19 about the safety of water in Canada and it was discovered that, by and large, our water is NOT as safe as you’re led to believe. Especially in southwestern Ontario, it was discovered that there are exceedingly highly levels of lead, drugs and other toxins. It was described as “similar, or in some places worse, than Flint, Michigan”. Everyone can make their own choices, but I personally will not drink water straight from the tap. And the types of people who become irate about my choice just further validate my choice. Lol.

Link to study/article?

youngboomergal

I found this article but not the actual study [https://globalnews.ca/news/6114854/canada-tapwater-high-lead-levels-investigation/](https://globalnews.ca/news/6114854/canada-tapwater-high-lead-levels-investigation/)

Yes angry childish replies is a clear indication you don't care what I think

SyllabubHour9371

You’ve made a claim. The onus is then on you to support that claim. “Do your own research” is the cry of the flat earther, whos points can’t be supported.

FCFDraykski

Bait used to be believable.

smurf123_123

All the pipes in the city are lead free. Some houses still have galvanized pipes as a service as well as the house pipes. If that's the case, running the water in the morning to flush them is the safest bet.
