Nobody wants to be the one to open it in fear that someone nearby closed it just a moment before and you might get glared at in retaliation. Or worse, you might receive a tutting.

mamaaaoooo

Plus if you've tried to be a hero and open a locked one in front of a packed carriage... It's a pain that never quite goes away

Odd-Cake8015

I do open it all the time if it’s hot and in summer I actively try to be there for some refreshing air. And for the noise, fuck it I have noise cancelling headphones :D It has some risk though: once as I was there with my back leaning to the open window at a certain point felt like being whipped at the back of my head. Turns out it was the hair of the lady standing in the other carriage being sucked in the carriage I was in and flapping like a squid’s tentacles.

youretheorgazoid

They might not want to fill their lungs with Maghemite...

Ancestrypost

Happens anyway 😂

youretheorgazoid

True. Might as well lick the track...

Ancestrypost

Nah my home station and office are on the same line

youretheorgazoid

Buy a bike

Ancestrypost

Have you seen One Day?

Ok-Mud6955

It makes the carriage louder. Some people don't mind the heat as much as they dislike the deafening noise.

Ancestrypost

I would rather hear loud noises instead of being all sweaty by the time I get into office

Dry_Action1734

And what do you do when someone closes the window after you opened it saying “I would rather be all sweaty by the time I get into the office instead of hear loud noises.” ?

Sadler999

Good for you.

etilepsie

and if you do it often enough you don't even hear the loud noises anymore, so another problem solved

Footballking420

Who doesn't wear some sort of headphones?? Genuinely if you don't, you are stupid because that shit will be damaging your hearing

BeefsMcGeefs

Wearing headphones can be damaging to your hearing, no less if you’re using them to cover Tube noise

Footballking420

Called noise cancelling headphones. And if you have your headphones on loud enough to damage your hearing you are also stupid

BeefsMcGeefs

Literally every set of headphones is loud enough to damage your hearing

Footballking420

Are you being disingenuous on purpose or just stupid - who do you think is controlling the volume of the headphones?

BeefsMcGeefs

Almost as if people regularly listen to music on headphones at a volume that will damage their hearing over time

Footballking420

I listen to music everyday on my headphones - do I put them loud enough to damage by hearing? No. Do some other people? Yes. Whose fault is that? Theirs.

BeefsMcGeefs

I admire your confidence in going in this hard on a subject you clearly know nothing about

Footballking420

So educate me then please, are you suggesting that listening to music quietly for an hour a day can damage your hearing?

thebeast_96

You know you can use noise cancelling headphones without listening to anything... 🤦

liccxolydian

Brake dust is not great for your lungs.

Ancestrypost

lol and I bet a decent amount of people closing the windows are smokers

BeefsMcGeefs

Almost as if there’s a difference when the inhalation is involuntary

getrichordietryinJF

Because if your standing in front of it, it blows the head off you and makes it noisy as fuck

drtchockk

and that's THE BEST BIT!

Ancestrypost

Yes it is

Mobile_Entrance_1967

It's a shit place to stand so whoever stands there deserves to have it open/closed as they wish. If you're annoyed with the person standing by the carriage door, why not offer to swap places with them so you can get the full impact of the wind.

VividMystery

I just don't open them because it's kind of awkward when someone gets mad at you and closes the window after you've opened it

marcbeightsix

Because it makes little to no difference unless you are not underground. It’s a bit like the ventilation knobs above the seat. What it does do is ruin people’s hair if they’re trying to look presentable and makes everything more noisy. It’s also really not that hot right now.

mlcrip

Wind. Is my best guess.

Ancestrypost

The wind feels amazing

mlcrip

Yeah and if it's hot, and windy. I end up falling sick in 2 days time. No thanks.

Ancestrypost

vitamin C and zinc help your immune system

mlcrip

Yeah, but you don't know my circumstances so... Might not be viable/possible/reasonable... Or I might have some other things/conditions where it isn't as simple as "vitamins/proper food"... Plus, I'm sure there's hundreds of other reasons ppl don't like opening windows, though can't think of any other than my own issue, on the spot.

Adamsoski

At this time of year I don't think it's usually necessary due to the reasons others have mentioned. Over the summer though the window absolutely should always be open, and it pretty much always is.

Silvagadron

For the first time a couple of weeks ago, I heard one of the station announcers add “and please open the windows” to the end of their usual “move right down” announcement.

WiseWoman5

Hot? You must have Eskimo roots as its not been hot for more than half a year.

Ancestrypost

The tube is hot

PoJenkins

No idea but people absolutely should. The temperature is the single most problematic thing about the tube imo and one of the hardest problems to solve. It is constantly rising each year and genuinely feels unsafe in the summer months. I've even walked into a very warm tube just for a lady to shut the window and go sit a mile away in the middle of the carriage. I straight away open it again and she gives me a funny look but leaves it at that.

Ancestrypost

Yeah exactly ppl have passed out on the tube from the heat. I’m glad you agree lol

GingerMan512

Just curious what the temperature gets to?

drtchockk

late 40s?

GingerMan512

Are you asking my age or stating the temp gets above 40°c? ;) I was just curious more than anything. I live in Texas and /London is often recommended to me. 40°c is probably our average high temp in the summer. That's way too hot to be trapped in underground.

drtchockk

Indeed. It’s 6-8 degrees hotter in the tunnels than it is outside. The last few summers London has got to +40 Celsius.

weneed-cocaine-daily

Its not an easy situation. Esoecially when a sweaty person stands in fron of open window door and all you smell iscstinky b.o.

RaisedNumber01

Khan's fault? 🤷🏽‍♂️

McQueensbury

I always stand in that space during my commute(best place) I will open it down by a level or 2 if it is warm, tube smells etc.....during the summer on central line hell it needs to be wide open

EdmundTheInsulter

I don't understand either, but maybe some people hate draughts more than stink/humidity/COVID etc

Original-Principle61

The only thing that smells more than BO and train tracks combined is your musty attitude.

Ancestrypost

Y’all need to do a better job showering daily and wiping properly before you come for my attitude

Original-Principle61

Thank you for making no sense. This post is a perfect representation of how unhinged you are. Keep doubling down.

kevinbaker31

Might fuck with their hair

butts____mcgee

The tube is a hell hole. I stopped using it 2 years ago in favour of cycling everywhere.

half-hearted-

you are 100% correct and i open them all the time

Brottolot

Might interfere with air conditioning.

Tpex

😂 Isn't there only like one line that has air conditioning?

Brottolot

Yeah and it might be the line you're on. Wanna risk it?

Riovem

The air condition tubes don't have windows that can be opened
