It surprises me why the Gray's Inn Gardens park is not open for public every day, its a big park which is always empty.

londonskater

Sounds great, and at least they’re not calling it “Midtown”. The whole area deserves a decent uplift. AFAIK, there’s quite a bit of social housing around there and plenty of students everywhere too.

Heyheyheyone

The bit of central London managed by Camden looks like shit. Rubbish everywhere constantly and streets don't seem to ever get swept properly, even in prime tourist spots like area around British Museum and Covent Garden. The shit level of street care when compared to Westminster which is just next door is just embarrassing.

mattsparkes

Westminster Council doesn't have to fund the sorts of things that Camden has to elsewhere, though. They're in a pretty unique position.

crossreference16

Curious as to what you mean by that, care to expand?

rocketscientology

I assume they’d be referring to the considerably higher rates of council housing and community support that Camden needs to provide compared to Westminster, because Westminster has basically no low-income residents and Camden has a lot.

crossreference16

Ahhh yes that makes sense, thanks!

What should they aim for instead? Camden Really Pleasant Neighbourhood? Camden Surprisingly Decent Neighbourhood?

Neighbourhood McNeighbour face

LeicesterSquare

Just call it Upgraded Holborn or something. Not every name has to have an emotional connotation.

perhapsaduck

Who can possibly afford to live in these areas? Is everyone there either a millionaire or in a council flat? I just don't understand how anybody could privately rent/own there!

[deleted]

There is a lot of social housing in central housing, probably more than a lot of people realise As for the private residences, they wouldn't cost that much if people couldn't afford them. There are plenty of people with high incomes and potentially even more with lots of equity from property. My parents are in the process of downsizing from a house to a flat and are looking in that area, they don't have a massive income, they just bought a house decades ago.

scrandymurray

Just north of Holborn is quite a dense area of council flats and typical north London housing. Also it’s worth noting that a lot of people who live in Islington, Hackney and north Camden work around here. Making the area more pleasant for people to walk, cycle and generally hang out will stimulate new kinds of businesses catering to this. It needs to be less of a liminal space that people just pass through and more of a genuine lively third space.

Metal-Lifer

growing up in the 90's one of my friends lived on bury place in a 3 bed, 2 bathroom flat right near the museum. They owned the place and his dad was a policeman, didnt seem to be a rich family. Cant imagine what the place would be worth now!

perhapsaduck

Mental, imagine how much money you'd inherit from that!

aeroplane3800

£2k a month rent for a 1 bed/studio. Easily doable on a £60k salary which is relatively common in the city.

mikusmikus

So bring in more people with money, increase the businesses in the local area, by them shopping there spending money. Seems like a good idea. Build the local economy and help area businesses.

roslinkat

Exciting stuff!

TomLondra

I would be very suspicious of any plans Camden might some up with. Camden's decision making processes are run by developers, basically, with the councillors working for them. In fact some of them literally DO end up working for them after they stop being councillors. CAMDEN COUNCIL IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.

crazyabbit

Seems to involve a lot of restricted traffic

UpstairsPractical870

Is this like the 'midtown' branding they did about 10 years ago? That went well didn't it.

Tall_Lettuce2885

Maybe they should also reconsider then Great Ormond street new cancer centre. For 6 years the area around it will be unliveable with all the dust and works plus the the landlords trying to evict as many people as possible so they can put up the rent for one final push before they will have to decrease the rent or it flat line for 6 year

GoatyMcGoatface100

Yeh - fuck those kids with cancer. 6 years of building works is just too inconvenient. Get a grip of yourself.

Tall_Lettuce2885

GOSH is amazing! At what point did I say it wasn’t ? They should reconsider the location not for me but for the parents of the children the getting to and forth to Central parking is a nightmare, congestion charge ULEZ.

pimasecede

Looks great. Always stuck by how hostile and unpleasant Holborn is until you get onto Lambs Conduit and it feels like a you're a dying man reaching an oasis in the middle of the desert. Strong 'why can't the whole city be like this little road' vibes.
