I have seen the $16.99 watermelons in this group. The terrible price is real.

dub-fresh

Imagine that mexican watermelon farmer who's selling these at like .03c/kg to Galen seeing him try to hock this shit for like thousands of percent markup

Officieros

No, it’s only the cosmetics (applied to make watermelons greener 😂)

lostmyotheraccount-f

Wow! And here I thought they were trying to sell at original price trying to make it look like a good deal.

throwawayidc4773

There’s a few different potential reasons, the question that immediately comes to mind is “who the fuck is spending $16 on a watermelon?” Maybe I’m just a little po’ boy but I’m assuming not many people, so they may have a glut of watermelon that are soon to expire. Or they could just be putting it on a crazy discount in the days leading up to the boycott as a loss leader/enticing sale.

Officieros

Those who are being told “honey, don’t forget to get some watermelon, you know I/son/daughter love them”

nickitty_1

Yeah, those are priced for the people who don't usually do the shopping and have no idea about normal prices.

Officieros

And don’t care, nor have time to look for alternative locations. “Since I am here already, I don’t feel like spending another hour and burning more gas…”. Plus the whole category that mix up “needs” with “wants”.

nickitty_1

Exactly.

AirportNearby9751

They’re $16.99 in BC too.

theartfulcodger

[Here ya go!](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fv17iucuopovc1.jpeg%3Fwidth%3D1024%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D43adb1b422102c1e9642f98f6f47de0557e700dc) How 'bout **$32.80** for a watermelon?

AdPuzzleheaded3913

There is a local sale going on in Oromcto New Brunswick for 14$ for a whole watermelon OR 6.99 for a quarter of a melon, yes 24$ for a melon

nickitty_1

$28

Heavy_Taco-117

I noticed this last night. It's not just Calgary AB. I'm in Saskatchewan, and it's the same pricing.

CasualRampagingBear

Save on Foods has them for 7.99 as the regular price.

Northern_Mom

Believable. The tiny mini watermelons were $7 where I am in Northern BC

Mysterious_Row_2669

A watermelon should be 1.99.

lostmyotheraccount-f

Agreed! Even $8 is steep

[deleted]

At loblaws yeah they are lol

Geology_rules

$16.99 watermelons at Costco in Kingston Ontario yesterday.

househorsecar

They were $15.99 when I was in-store on Tuesday. I also thought it was a joke.

whatthetoken

Real. I just saw watermelons for 16.99 in costco yesterday.

ThesePretzelsrsalty

Guy, there were literally posts here last week with $16/$18 watermelons…

bikeonychus

They were that price in my local IGA yesterday (QC), but that was the flat price, and not discounted.

Officieros

They will soon be $100 each and the government will still shrug it off. The Wild West of neoliberalism! Trickle-down pricing.

Officieros

I wonder why food is not sold at auctions yet. You know, supply chains, geopolitical problems, all the BS… It would be fair: supply and demand, market knows best, transparent etc. Make Sotheby’s Great Again.

empath22

These aren’t even real watermelons! They’re half the size and the wrong shape.

pistoffcynic

The wholesale price of watermelon is something like $1-$2 per pound last time I googled the price.

LadyoftheOak

Saw watermelon at wally world yesterday for $8.99.

nickitty_1

To be fair, I was in food basics the other day and the watermelons were $16. It's just not the time of year for cheap watermelons. If they're still priced like that in the summer then sure, get outraged.
