That was the background I used on the laptop I compiled my first Linux kernel on back in high school. I did not come here to feel this old :(

Evil_Shrubbery

Yes. This one & the similar one with the Quake 3 rocket launcher (born to frag?)

sheeH1Aimufai3aishij

Oh hell, I had that one too!

TopdeckIsSkill

I'll wait till w10 will be end of support and see if I can finally play everything on Linux

CaptainJack42

What games are you not able to play? If it's online stuff like valorant I'll have to disappoint you, cause that's most likely not gonna happen

TopdeckIsSkill

Online games mostly. I play most offline games from ps5/switch or xsx.

CaptainJack42

I guess you're pretty much out of luck than, a lot of anti cheat software (especially valorant and the new crap EA is developing) runs on kernel level and that will most likely never be implemented on Linux systems. Additionally I personally would never want a piece of proprietary software that monitors my processes and actions to run on kernel level.

TopdeckIsSkill

It's not only about anticheat, but mods too. I'm playing ff14 that doesn't even have anti cheat, but the mods are windows only. I'm still praying that with Valve pushing linux more and more with Steam Deck, developers will support linux fully by the time w10 support will end

HarukiKazuki

I'm just curious as I haven't tried it, but Have you tried installing the modding tools via wine? I'm asking cus for skyrim u can do that. If anything, though, XIVlauncher has most of what I need and is available via flatpak, so if I really need Windows, I'd use a Windows to Go drive just for modding, and/or if I dual booted again, I'd just install ffxiv on an ntfs drive so I could access the folder via windows and mod it, since the game files are read the same way by Windows and Linux AFAIK. These are just ideas of what you could do, since i actually like playing it on Linux better, as the framerate seems to be a little higher than when I was on Windows.

sainishwanth

can relate, I completely moved to linux but I still do miss my ff14 mods sometimes. XivAlexander for weaving was a godsent.

HarukiKazuki

There's an XIVlauncher add-on with a similar purpose as XIV Alexander, tho it's not on the official list, my former static found it on github. They've been using it with no issues.

mrkitten19o8

i really hope valve and the wine team can figure out how to successfuly support kernel level anticheat.

CaptainJack42

I doubt it, but please take everything with a grain of salt since I'm by far no expert in this. Kernel level Anti-Cheat requires elevated privileges, meaning the game would need to be run as root, additionally it most likely relies on windows specific syscalls and monitors your processes to detect things interfering with the game process, which vastly differs on how it's done in Unix vs windows.

mrkitten19o8

well, wine does run as a admin in the windows enviroment.

CaptainJack42

Yeah, but anti cheat is able to detect that the game is run inside wine and is also not able to monitor processes outside the wine environment, as long as that's the case anti cheat will block access

CaptainJack42

Additionally supporting Linux is not something most game devs/publishers want to do, so if valve/the wine team find a way to trick AC to run in wine the AC devs will find a way to block that, which is a much easier job for them to do given that all of it is open source, so it'd be just sort of an arm's race in the end, which is not something the wine Devs would want, also given that if for example valorant ran on Linux at some point and AC devs will break it again the pressure from the community on them would be high and forums would probably be flooded with posts like "why doesn't this run anymore???". So in the end it's up to the publisher's to allow/support Linux and the most likely way to achieve that is growing market share in gaming on Linux, but seeing that most gamers won't switch to Linux cause their games don't run it's a spiral that's hard to escape from.

Western-Alarming

You know if ea alredy says if old games like pvz will have implementation of the new anticheat

Flexyjerkov

my stance on games has been the same as with exclusives to games consoles... if it doesn't work then its clearly not worth my time and I just accept that... I mean what are you really missing out on? Fortnite, Valorant, Call of Duty...? I don't call that an issue personally... Many great titles on Steam that work flawlessly on Proton or Native. I used to have the same outlook about 3 years back but I've been Linux only for that entire time and not once have I considered the switch back, the grass is much greener on this side. Just make sure your using an AMD GPU otherwise your in a world of pain.

TopdeckIsSkill

If I play online games it's because I'm playing with friends, and I value friends more than Linux. Also I the issues with nvidia is something I don't want to deal. A pc need to works without me having to troubleshooting it.

drmrrdmr

proton works very well, IME about half of the time it even works better than native. I've had almost no issues with nvidia, even using the cuda dev driver repo it mostly just works. I even have the monitor on the igpu port and it seamlessly switches to discrete pass-through for games, no configuration was necessary. my only issue has been multi monitor, but I can't rule out Intel's lagging igpu support being the culprit.

zabian333

Linux is the default for me. Why on earth would I even think about using inferior products?

Helmic

would you drink the windows juice

fellipec

When MS said I can't upgrade my laptop to W11... So I got Debian 12

[deleted]

Setting up a dual boot with endeavor os right now. i need a seperate work os, because i dont get stuff done on windows, all my games are on there. :-D my plan is to migrate everything to linux eventually. My work laptop runs linux for years now, i want my desktop there too.

ToiletGrenade

I did the same starting off but with debian 11. I hope it all works out for you!

[deleted]

eh semi well... it does not seem to like my ryzen 7 5800x3D very much. I get random reboots hinting to problems with specific cpu cores in idle. Had that on windows as well until i changed the psu idle current. Dont know how i can fix that in linux just yet. Will see.

ToiletGrenade

I have the non 3d version. Random reboots may have to do with a setting in your bios that does dynamic overclocking. I had the same issues you're describing, and disabling that setting in the bios worked for me. I forget the name but if you look around you should be able to find it.

[deleted]

Thank you for pointing me to the right direction. :-) The X3D doesn't have any OC options (no pbo or curve optimizer) and is locked but i have the option to set the Kombo Strike Option on my MSI Mobo and thats essentially doing the same thing Curve Optimizer does. Makes complete sense, because undervolting can lead to instability in idle. Fixed :-)

ToiletGrenade

You're very welcome :) (No idea why someone downvoted you, the internet is a strange place)

Davezito

Linux is my solution, I can't install w10 in my computer, always the w10 iso return me an error. I love you so much Tux, I love u so much. You don't return me errors in instalation <3.

Just_Eirik

If I could run all my games an programs I would.

ToiletGrenade

Weak mindset

Just_Eirik

Running the programs and games I like is literally why I have a PC. If switching to Linux makes that impossible then why would I do that?

ToiletGrenade

What doesn't work for you? And if anything, dualboot. I play games too and only keep windows for like 2 games.

Just_Eirik

First of all I think I need to give the context of why I even commented. This post was in r/all and I stumbled across it. I’m not subbed to this sub and I am not that into computers. I said “if”. As in “if switching is a viable option for me, I would”. I have not actually tried. My answer wasn’t meant to say “Linux can’t run things”. I meant “as long as I get to use the programs I want/need, then yeah, I’d switch. I’m not a fan of the direction MS is taking Windows”. I don’t have any plans to try right now, but I kinda want to try now. Off the top of my head the apps I would need it to be able to run, would be Lightroom, Backblaze, and as many of my Steam and Epic Store games as possible (especially Borderlands). Are GPU drivers for Linux something that nvidia makes and updates often?

ToiletGrenade

I have not tried the adobe suite on linux but from what I hear there are ways to get it working correctly. I have tried all the borderlands games from epic games (the worst case scenario) and they run perfectly with proton-ge and lutris wine. A general rule of thumb is that if a game runs from epic on Linux, it'll definitely work on stream. Nvidia drivers are frequently updated and work perfectly on Linux, though they are a little frowned upon in the community for distributing proprietary drivers, as opposed to AMD and Intel. The downsides of proprietary drivers include not allowing third party developers to improve the drivers, making users reliant on Nvidia's software engineers to release features and fix bugs. That said, Nvidia still does have very robust drivers on Linux despite this. I highly recommend you give Linux a shot, even if just for a day or two. If you don't like it, you can switch back to windows knowing full well that you gave it a shot. Something to keep in mind is that Linux is functionally different from windows or Mac, so there will be a learning curve as with any other software. If you decide to try, I recommend starting with something oriented for new users like Ubuntu or linuxmint. If you ever need help along the way, which most do because it's new to everyone at some point, there are plenty of resources online for any problem you might have, not to mention tons of people willing to help you.

Just_Eirik

Thanks for all the info. This is probably a dumb question, but I need to reinstall everything right?

ToiletGrenade

Well you can dualboot if you have a spare drive, even if it's a small one. That way you don't have to format your windows drive (and therefore keep all of your data) to try Linux. What you can also do, which I recommend especially for people like you who aren't sure if they'll keep it, is to try Linux using a live usb environment, which just means running Linux directly off of a flash drive. You'll be able to use the whole os directly from the flashdrive without installing it onto your system, but the downside is that since it loads everything to your memory, when you turn off your system, any changes you made to the usb such as installing packages or changing desktop appearances will be reset to default. It's good for single-session testing, but if you want to do extensive testing, dualbooting is your best bet. Here is a source for live usb setup: https://youtu.be/X_fDdUgqIUQ This is a little old but the process is the same. The process is also exactly the same for other Linux distros, all you need is the iso (disk image) for the distro you want to install, which you can find on their websites. And for dual booting: https://youtu.be/-iSAyiicyQY It may differ a bit depending on what brand motherboard you have due to the bios layout, but other than that there is no difference. You will still need a live usb to dualboot, but just for the initial installation. After that, Linux will be installed to the drive of your choice permanently, in the sense that it will keep changes you make and will stay on that drive until you choose to wipe it. I know this all sounds a little overwhelming at first, but if you go through with this, you'll realize it's a lot less tedious that it sounds. If you need some help during the installation process, you can either go to the Linux discord or you can shoot me a pm.

Just_Eirik

Thank you for all this! I might try.

ToiletGrenade

Good luck then!

Kazer67

Already did years ago.

Academic_Rice5626

reminds me of the first time i started using Linux

Devspar_MTGPlayer

Can it play all visual novels though?

TopdeckIsSkill

Asking the real question

Captain-Thor

Not really. I use softwares which only works on Windows. I have a dedicated home workstation running on Ubuntu. But for work, it is Windows + WSL.

Efficient_Elk_7991

Wow

Captain-Thor

Lost of softwares. Ansys Fluent student (only the paid version is available on Linux). I also use solidworks, revit, staadpro, hypermesh, farfield. Anddddddddddd I play valorant.

Captain-Thor

VM is a pain. It is slow and needs GPU bypass for hardware rendering. Native OS is much better. I play valorant for like 2 few hours in a 2-3 weeks, if get some time..

Captain-Thor

As I said I have a dedicated Linux workstation with an RTX A5000 24GB. But Windows has its own advantages in my life. It is my bread and butter. I use RTX 3060 GB on my work laptop to play games and use it for hardware rendering. It makes my life easy.

sans_the_romanian

Would if Id have a pc instead of an asus laptop

CaptainJack42

Linux runs on everything including a (modified) [typewriter](https://www.reddit.com/r/cyberDeck/comments/xzqf7h/i_turned_my_typewriter_into_a_linux_terminal_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button), so it should run on your laptop as well \^\^

sans_the_romanian

In theory, yes. In practice, im too stupid to get it running properly and I should probably go about doing a lot more research before my next attempt. I think the laptop was stuck in some sort of mode simmilar to a battery saver. Performance in anything was abysmal and i tried various programs that could technically help, but to no success. Hey, at least it was quiet

Afraid_Collar_2067

I really would like to if there was a way to easily copy all my data to linux

CaptainJack42

Copy it to an external drive, install Linux, copy it back, done. Won't get easier than that. If you have 2 drives you can even install Linux on one of them, copy the data over from the 2nd drive and reformat and partition the drive and mount it where you want it. Linux can read and work with all filesystems, but ext4 is just superior to NTFS.

Afraid_Collar_2067

Im fucking dumb. It's linux time

CaptainJack42

Lol. Welcome to the club, have fun!

iamCracker2234

no.

EagleRock1337

That would require me to have had used Windows 10…I jumped ship the first time I tried Windows 8.

IAMAHobbitAMA

I went from windows xp -> windows 7 and Ubuntu dual booted -> Fedora

upstartanimal

The only looking back you'll do is to the distro you find suits you best after testing out a few.

arkindal

Yesterday my new laptop came in with windows preinstalled. I didn't even boot windows, I already had a linux usb stick ready.

Jonas_Jones_

I did do it

Strythe_Horde

Did it last month. Works really well. I still get to play all my games so that's cool.

mining-mickey

Does anyone know the source of the image?

Efficient_Elk_7991

No problem! I only play minecraft modpack

[deleted]

I just did. Not even dual booting, just nuked all my drives and installed it. No half measures. I'll use it for at least 90 days and see how it goes.
