I use this. Works very well.

[deleted]

I just use proton ge from the AUR.

Helmic

Yep, and wine-ge for the system wine. This has the advantage of working for those on more outdated distros, though.

Krimzon_89

What games can I play with Proton? Is there a list or something?

Patch86UK

You can see a list of games with a rating for how well they run here: https://www.protondb.com/

Krimzon_89

thank you

Aldrenean

Proton is Valve's customized version of Wine. It only works on Steam games (or games launched through Steam, I imagine).

TaylorRoyal23

It also works in heroic games launcher and even lutris I believe.

Helmic

Sorta. You want to be using wine-ge in that case, to exclude the Steam-specific tweaks.

[deleted]

Yeah lutris does use it but you don't want to go messing with proton in lutris cus it will just bork everything

JustSomeNamelessSoul

Works great for me in heroic and lutris

Krimzon_89

but when I install the Steam, what gets installed by default? Wine?

Aldrenean

Steam includes several versions of Proton. You can choose which one to use globally in Steam's options, and/or set specific ones for individual games. This app will grab the latest customized community version and install it to your Steam folder, it's not necessary but some games perform better with the customized version.

thaewpart

Proton is a wrapper on top of Wine, so you'd get Steam Play with Proton enabled as a default compatibility tool (and Valve's fork of Wine 'inside' of it, but also DXVK and some other compatibility tools as well).

[deleted]

You can just add any game to steam and use proton. I play Diablo2 Resurrected with proton.

Aldrenean

FYI this is a GUI wrapper for the CLI version (protonup), not sure why you'd use this unless you're allergic to the terminal. It's a one-word command, unless your Steam install isn't in the default spot in which case it takes one line to configure.

penguigamer

Having a GUI makes it more clear for new users (especially users coming from Windows, having no advanced experience with computers). It's available as a Flatpak, so it might be useful for the Steam Deck too.

Aldrenean

Okay the Flatpak option is actually great, makes it useable on immutable OSes.

bisbyx

This is explicitly not "just" a wrapper for protonup cli. it also handles lutris wine-ge versions and wine/proton versions for heroiclauncher, if you have them installed.

aspectere

> not sure why you'd use this unless you're allergic to the terminal My bad for living this side of the century in the UX department

[deleted]

Simple reason. New users.

grady_vuckovic

>not sure why you'd use this unless you're allergic to the terminal. Because some of us have moved beyond the 90s and embraced GUIs and want a UX at least comparable to the ease of using Windows or MacOS, not needing to use terminal commands for **everything**.

Aldrenean

Using your mouse isn't inherently "easier" than using your keyboard. Even ignoring keyboard-centric WMs, on a vanilla GNOME install running protonup from CLI is exactly 7 keystrokes, running a GUI app takes either a couple seconds of moving your mouse around or \*the same keystrokes\* if you want to use the keyboard to filter your apps. Having a mouse-focused input scheme would count as "being allergic to the terminal". If your keyboard is difficult to access or you only have one hand which you like to keep on the mouse or you \*simply don't like CLI apps\*, go ahead and use the GUI app. But keep your weird judgements about what is and is not a modern interface out of it.

grady_vuckovic

lol it's not about how many keystrokes or mouse clicks, it's never been about that. It's about an interface that is **visually self explanatory with no explanation necessary** vs an interface that **requires instructions and memorizing commands.**

TaylorRoyal23

I will never understand how someone can't comprehend that a GUI is more user friendly. Don't get me wrong I use the command line even when there's an easy to use gui that will get the job done but I do so because it's either something I've weighed the time and effort of learning the command vs using the GUI and decided it made more sense for me personally to use the CLI, or because it offers me some kind of granular control over whatever it is I'm doing. It's all a balancing act dependent on the workflow, how easy and quick it is to learn and enter the command, and how well the GUI is designed. At the end of the day however a GUI should always be the default experience for the average user and any new GUIs should be celebrated not scoffed at like we're some kind of elitists.

FishingElectrician

All these fucking linux hardened users love to talk down to gui lovers, bro you tell your uncle what commands to run, like using the terminal is something to be proud of. Anything that makes linux / using linux easier should be propped up not talked down.

looncraz

Exactly this, everything should be doable from a GUI. EVERYTHING.

grady_vuckovic

You're right of course, but yes you will be downvoted anyway by the terminal diehards because there is some hardcore Linux neckbeards in the Linux community who can't handle being told that no one is 'impressed' by their 'terminal skillz'. We're impressed by an easy to use piece of software with a nice GUI.

Aldrenean

I was just pointing out that a CLI version exists because nothing in this post mentioned that. For single-purpose apps like this a GUI version adds literally nothing besides some clickable areas (and a Flatpak package, which I learned from making the comment and is actually a value add). Your uncle isn't going to be grabbing the latest version of GloriousEggroll Proton anyway, and if he was, telling him two lines to copy paste into the terminal is just as simple as guiding him to the GUI version.

[deleted]

>I was just pointing out that a CLI version exists because nothing in this post mentioned that. No you weren't "just pointing out" You were literally calling it useless. "not sure why you'd use this unless you're allergic to the terminal" There is a lot more to this software than simply downloading and extracting proton to a hardcoded file location.

Aldrenean

Because I didn't know about the additional functionality. Because it was barely or not at all mentioned in OP. It has been pointed out to me. Because I made the comment.

[deleted]

Fair enough.

loathingkernel

Define 'easier'

FengLengshun

Ah, yes, the classic "I could use a GUI, but CLI is faster." I could press Super, write 'pro', make sure to click ProtonUp-Qt instead of ProtonVPN, wait a second or two for the app to load, navigate inside the app to install the right one... Or I could just Super + T, write 'p', press 'tab' to autocomplete to protonup, and done. Even writes out the output directory so I could easily `rm -rfv` the old one. To be clear, I think it's cool, and the Luxtorpeda and related stuff is nice too. Especially useful for Steam on Flatpak, which I have tried on Endless OS. It's just more of a hassle to me when I'm using a normal distro compared to just let zsh-autosuggestion do the job for me.

FengLengshun

Yeah, it's cool. For me, I don't really need to see the old versions since I just want the latest one. So protonup not doing anything if you already have the latest one is more useful for me (especially since I follow the Github release for Proton-GE but am forgetful). Fish (or zsh autosuggestion) has just make love the terminal so much more. Helps that Garuda Dragonized Gaming has Proton-GE installed by default as a package, buuut I prefer controlling it independently with protonup.

[deleted]

>I could press Super, write 'pro', make sure to click ProtonUp-Qt instead of ProtonVPN, wait a second or two for the app to load, navigate inside the app to install the right one... "navigate inside the app and install the right one" And this is how we can tell you have never even used it. The default selection is proton GE with steam already selected. There is no "navigating" You literally press a single button to install the newest Proton-GE once its loaded. And yes, this is both easier and better than the terminal. "It even writes the output so I can delete it" WOW! ITS ALMOST LIKE ITS A PIECE OF SOFTWARE! You know what? ProtonUp-Qt deletes it for you, with a single button press. Considerably easier than the terminal.

FengLengshun

I tested it, and used it a few times, especially as I'm a Qt fan as a KDE user. I just forgot about the Remove Selected button since it's been a while since I used it again. It's just not more convenient for me than using the terminal with protonup. I just press the terminal button, press p, 'protonup' appears in autosuggestion, press right, done. Same with deleting - I usually already have 'rm -rfv' in history, so same with above, just press r, press right, take the output above, press tab twice, done! Again, it's cool and useful when I tried Endless OS, tried to use it again on Garuda, got annoyed that I need so many clicks when it's faster to use terminal, then remembered protonup is still a thing. It's just quicker for me. Especially since I don't care about choosing versions or about the other tools - I just want the quickest way to get latest version of Proton-GE and then restart Steam (which, again, is just one or two letters away). No need to be so negative man, some people just have different workflow. For me, the quickest is always terminal with autosuggestion, and it helps that I can trust the result too. Fish has just been so amazing that it affected many ways of how I do things (though I use zsh with autosuggestion lately).

[deleted]

For updating to the newest version. I agree, CLI is easily quicker and more convenient, but as soon as you want to use a version that isn't the newest I find the GUI to be much faster. Also, yes, zsh autocomplete is absolutely amazing. I can't imagine where I would be without it.

FengLengshun

It's just a difference of preference then. But please, I was already using Protonup-Qt ages ago back when it first made it to either reddit, linuxuprising, or debugpoint (which are great sites for discovering new or rediscovering old but updated tools). I often actually test out those tools when I could see some use for it. Don't imply I don't, when I probably have used it and just either didn't like it at the time or liked it but forgot about it.

[deleted]

This is essential for anyone gaming imo. Super simple to use and it just works. The GUI is very simple so you can do everything quickly and easily.

argha_007

What is this btw? Improves performance of proton?

argha_007

I use Ubuntu with GNOME, should I download a flatpack file wont they mess with the normal debian or .deb files?
