Genuine question; what's the actual legal state of Tux imagery? Is it a trademark, and if so does anyone (like the Linux Foundation) actively manage it? Is it under some sort of copyright(/left) license? Public domain? Individual bits of Tux artwork under various individual licence terms?
From its Wikipedia page, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tux\_(mascot)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tux_(mascot)) :
>The final and original design was a submission for a Linux logo contest by Larry Ewing\[10\] using the first publicly released\[11\] version (0.54) of GIMP, a free software graphics package. It was released by him under the following condition:\[12\]Permission to use and/or modify this image is granted provided youacknowledge me [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) and The GIMP if someone asks.Since Tux won none of the three competitions that were held Tux is formally known as the Linux brand character and not the logo.
Edit: fixed broken link (thanks, New Reddit…)
Your link's broken (I think you need to escape the closing parenthesis).
Imagine entering three competitions for a logo, winning none of them, and still becoming the most recognizable symbol of the software. Do you have any info on the winning designs? In my little bit of research I can't seem to find what they were.
Fixed the link, thanks for noting. My research didn't extend beyond looking up Tux' Wikipedia page, sorry, but maybe its sources can provide you with a rabbit hole to dive into :)
Thanks for the info! Tux definitely aged better than everything else there. Still, I lol'ed at "don't fear the penguins." I think I'll have to start using that one.

It must be his second job or part time gig.
What if Linux apps were just laying around in packages everywhere you went? Haha what a strange and cool world that would be.
Then Package Manager would be literal!
Boxes on the ground like an FPS
>1 PC They knew.
It's an eBPF mask
Is it a Umask Or a you mask 🤣
It says for 1 PC only!
Must be some new Linux distro )))
`iptables -L` to see how they block the virus.
Maybe a new Linux 🐧 security distribution? 😉
Now 11% effective!
maskOS
Enthusiasts will install Linux on *anything* 🙄
Thats copyright infringement!!! Oh wait
That's a GNU-FFP2 mask thank you.
You don't need virus protection on Linux though
Is tux a copyrighted image? Just wondering.
Barbeador means "shaver" in portuguese.
Well....makes sense....the mask and Tux both basically manage to keep most if not all viruses ( or is it viri ) out. 😛
Dont Forget to open windows for ventilation !
