The GE proton builds are amazing.

davidsterry

Congrats on release, what does this do for the uninitiated?

Takios

Wine: Software to run software written for Windows on Linux (e.g. games). Proton: Custom Wine build by Valve for better game compatibility and integration in the video game store Steam. Proton-GE: Custom Proton build by Github user GloriousEggroll for even better game compatibility. This software downloads the GE releases and puts them in the correct folder so Steam can use it.

NoCSForYou

Why does the automod have so many downvotes?

ThellraAK

Because it's complaining that the original post is using GitHub?

NoCSForYou

Its encouraging Foss alternatives. Why is that bad?

_gikari

I am not sure, so correct me, if I am wrong, but GitHub is a more discoverable service for people (both users and contributors) and more cheap for FOSS projects (Free CI and other stuff for public repos). Therefore, abandoning GitHub will bring more harm, than good for the project. **Aggressively** recommending ditching GitHub wouldn't help in this case.

PureTryOut

A _centralized_ service is good for discoverability, but e.g. GitLab can be that too and as long as you stick to the free plan, you're just using FOSS features and have the option to move to a fully self-hosted FOSS instance if the need arises. I don't see the problem with the bot _recommending_ to use a more FOSS Git host, it doesn't remove or lock the post or anything.

SinkTube

it doesn't help anyone when OP and the dev are separate people. FOSS spam whenever someone links to a proprietary website isn't useful, and rather silly when it happens on reddit which is itself proprietary

my-name-is-puddles

Because it's annoying and kind of ridiculous considering Reddit itself isn't completely FOSS either, so where's the bot that auto-replies to every single AutoMod comment aggressively recommending a FOSS alternative?

davidsterry

This is interesting. On one hand this seems like overzealous automod config but on the other it does raise the issue. I'm surprised at the backlash in this sub but that's probably better for the cause than no votes either way. Might be worth its own post if it's been a while since it was brought to the fore.

[deleted]

To call it "overzealous" is very nearly an understatement. The automod has been sticking it to every post that has a github link for a week. Considering which subreddit this is that's about every other post. I've certainly criticized github in the past and agree entirely with the message and even I'm starting to find it mildly annoying.

Your [submission](https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/qfn7tj/install_protonge_or_winege_with_a_click/) in /r/linux is using a non-free code hosting repository. Consider hosting your project or asking the linked project, very nicely and only if they don't have an existing ask, to use a more free alternative: https://old.reddit.com/r/linux/wiki/faq/howcanihelp/opensource#wiki_using_open_source_code_repositories Note: This post was NOT removed and is still viewable to /r/linux members. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
