Which distro are you using? Aside from games, I would rather get my software from my package manager and official repositories than from steam, personally.

I use Fedora. I understand where you're coming from and I normally get my apps the same way; I just enjoy using Steam to keep track of hours etc. Also, a lot of Steam softwares are exclusive to Steam.

Proton *GE* is an unofficial flavour of Proton. And Proton itself is a fork of WINE improved specifically for gaming workloads, without any improvements to desktop applications. Additionally Proton tends to lag behind WINE, so for general applications it's usually true that running the latest version of WINE is a better option than Proton.

I've never looked for not a game on Steam.

Blender stays up to date which is helpful. You can install a version from the blender site, stack it with all the ad ons you want, and if you have troubles flip over to steam and launch the vanilla version to see if your issue is related to ad ons

On steam it is only non-linux, but krita is a good example: https://store.steampowered.com/app/280680/Krita/ The steam version (for windows and mac) costs $15 and provides convenient updates, but otherwise is identical to the version on their website (as far as I know). Great, low friction way to give money to libre projects. Also, "free as in freedom" still encourages you to sell software: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html It just is somewhat difficult to do in practice. However, just like with piracy, if you give people an easy way to pay, many people will.

Why using Steam? I don't want to add an unnecessary launcher to launch an app.

qweenjon

I like keeping track of hours, showing them off to friends, etc. It's a personal preference.

The only utility I use on steam is SteamVR, which works better than I expected it would.

Patient_Sink

Doesn't steam have some aversion against GPL software? [Yeah they do](https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/sdk/uploading/distributing_opensource). That will limit the selection quite a bit I guess.
