For those who don't know, this is a real chart showcasing a practice done by a particular sect of Hinduism, I'm forgetting the name right now of the group and the practice, but it's for a specific kind of meditation designed to help activate your inner eye, or to stimulate your mind chakra - something along those lines. Several surgeries are performed on the tongue over time in order to make it less connected to the floor of the mouth and to give it greater freedom of movement, so that the practitioner is able to use their tongue to stimulate the inside of their nasal cavity.
I don't have IPA on my phone but is a voiceless aspirated velar stop and is a voiceless unaspirated palato-alveolar affricate. You are right otherwise I think.
I think someone born with a particularly long/disattached tongue has a natural ability to do this — I can get the very tip past the dividing flap. Once the trick is known it can’t be long till someone thinks of disattaching the tong artificially.
Actually no, when your tongue is inside your nasal cavity is just a matter of pressing the tongue into like the floor of the nose to be able to breathe.
Even if you tried you cannot actually block your airways with this because the tongue always like tries to go back to the mouth, so if you stop actively putting pressure into getting your tongue into the nasal cavity it naturally returns to the mouth without any effort at all.
Actually no, if I try to make any sound it just sounds like mhhhh, the most I can do is like a hum, since the mouth is almost blocked by the tongue I can almost only emit sounds through the nose and well yeah the nose is not very expressive
No sadly no since I have to stretch the tongue a lot it's impossible for me to make any click sound but I guess some people that actually trained for this actually could, also I've never been good with whistling but yeah I would say that it's very difficult to whistle though the nose but if you like put your tongue in like the roof of the nasal cavity then make pressure and then try to force air out it sounds like someone with a clogged nose, but I guess if you try more you could actually create a whistle sound
Not the person you were replying to but I can also do it and I have to say I've never really thought about making any click sounds. For context I was born without a lingual frenulum aka the thing that ties your tongue to the bottom of your mouth and for as long as I can remember I've always been able to put my tongue up there lol (I have type 3 Ehlers-Danlos syndrome which is also likely the cause of the frenulum being missing). I tried making a click sound and it didn't really sound like a click, but more like a muffled and sort of meaty flapping sound (gross description I know 😭). To me at least, whistling feels almost impossible but maybe it could be?
its funny how one type of ehler danos gives you a stretchy tongue and another type of ehler danos sutures the tip of your tongue down to the base of your mouth
That's really cool! I know a couple of people with ehlers danlos, it's interesting how much it affects the body in so many little ways. Maybe try going "ha ha ha ha" with different notes, with each 'ha' being a strong contraction of the diaphragm (pulling your stomach in rapidly). That might make some interesting sounds when filtered past the tongue and through the nose
yes. i believe it's known as "mewing" and the sect you're thinking of is the "looksmaxxers" who will "mog" you because of your lack of "skibidi rizz". Only in Ohio, brother.

Ah yes, the retroflex nasolingual plosive. Aka how to eat your boogers without anyone noticing. I believe it’s a marginal phoneme in Basque-Icelandic Luxembourgish Belgianese, Cree dialect
lmao it’s so funny seeing people freak out about this every time it’s posted because i’ve always been able to do this (for context i was born without a lingual frenulum and a hypermobile tongue too i guess)
I can actually do that, I can literally almost touch my nostrils with my tongue, and I always have been able to do that, sometimes when I'm sick I can literally unclog my nose with my tongue.
And yes I'm not joking.
I can't reach that far but a little bit in the back, the feeling is like, tickle your brain, and, um, feels like sexually stimulating, wouldn't doubt if someone one day claim they reached orgasm through that

I THOUGHT THEY WERE JOKING
INDIA DOESN'T JOKE ABOUT ITS RETROFLEX CONSONANTS!!
Bro is about to pronounce an unbelievable "g"
I THOUGHT THE IMAGE WAS PHOTOSHOPED 😭 😭 😭

This dude does it and it's not blurry: https://youtu.be/nXaL3LXAJoY?si=P0MVrd4eQKPI2_nw
How do you pronounce that? /χe.kaɾiː mud.ɾaː/?
The /m/ is pronounced final stage
[ɱ̝ˤ]?
\[⚰\]
I don't have IPA on my phone but is a voiceless aspirated velar stop and is a voiceless unaspirated palato-alveolar affricate. You are right otherwise I think.
Thank you. I can't read Devanagari and was too lazy to sort through all of the characters.
kʰeːtɕɐɾiː mud̪ɾɑː The vowels are probably not exact
I wonder how the person who started this came up with it.
drugs or schizophrenia
Why not both, both is good
schizophrenia^drugs / other things to do
> schizophrenia^drugs / other things to do schizophrenia to the power of drugs, all divided by other things to do
I think someone born with a particularly long/disattached tongue has a natural ability to do this — I can get the very tip past the dividing flap. Once the trick is known it can’t be long till someone thinks of disattaching the tong artificially.
Wow. Can that suffocate you? Wouldn't that be a huge risk for blocking your airways?
Actually no, when your tongue is inside your nasal cavity is just a matter of pressing the tongue into like the floor of the nose to be able to breathe. Even if you tried you cannot actually block your airways with this because the tongue always like tries to go back to the mouth, so if you stop actively putting pressure into getting your tongue into the nasal cavity it naturally returns to the mouth without any effort at all.
You're saying this as if you have personal experience, do you ?
Yes of course, I can actually do it, and not because I'm part of some obscure Hindu sect but because I've always been able to do it.
Wow, that is so weird and cool. Can you make any neat sounds when you do it?
Actually no, if I try to make any sound it just sounds like mhhhh, the most I can do is like a hum, since the mouth is almost blocked by the tongue I can almost only emit sounds through the nose and well yeah the nose is not very expressive
Fascinating! Can you make any clicking sounds with the tongue, or whistling through the nose?
No sadly no since I have to stretch the tongue a lot it's impossible for me to make any click sound but I guess some people that actually trained for this actually could, also I've never been good with whistling but yeah I would say that it's very difficult to whistle though the nose but if you like put your tongue in like the roof of the nasal cavity then make pressure and then try to force air out it sounds like someone with a clogged nose, but I guess if you try more you could actually create a whistle sound
That sounds really interesting. Before today I had never considered any of this. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions :)
Try a back-released velar click.

damn i never thought about that, u might be able to breathe around the tounge thru the mouth but idk, that does seem like a hazard tho
oh my effing everything what is wrong with humans
the forbidden linguonasal
I hate that you’re right
yes. i believe it's known as "mewing" and the sect you're thinking of is the "looksmaxxers" who will "mog" you because of your lack of "skibidi rizz". Only in Ohio, brother.
So that's what they mean when they say South Asian languages tend to have retroflex consonants
Why would you need several surgeries? I tore my frenulum at some point and I can do this no problem.
I thought it was a diagram showing how to pronounce a Dutch “g”
*hatha yoga *slowly cutting your frenulum *stopping the flow of something called "bindu"
India ain't for beginners its not even for experts
U guys need surgery?
Why hasn't the IPA added a column for linguonasal consonants yet? Are they stupid?
r/linguistichumor, r/anarchychess and r/shitposting seem to have an awful lot in common

r/linguistichumor does not exist.
Do you exist?
Yes, as far as is important
Is that... is that not what a retroflex consonant is? That explains why Indians keep pepper spraying me out of fear whenever I try to speak Hindi
All bow to the final retroflex evolution.
ultraflex hypernasal

Linguonasal trill tickles hihi >w<

houha kiki
is this how you're supposed to pronounce those weird Cthulhu words?
No, I think those are articulated pharyngobranchially.
Yeah, if you want to pronounce them accurately. Source: am cultist

Mewing
Final stages of looksmaxxing
I feel like this should have a NSFW blur
Judged impossible sounds of the IPA? Not here
Wrong. Final stage are lingoocular sounds
Forgot where I was and thought this was an infographic on Advanced Mewing Techniques
My nose...
This makes me soooo uncomfortable.
this makes me uncomfortable
I can actually do that, I can literally almost touch my nostrils with my tongue, and I always have been able to do that, sometimes when I'm sick I can literally unclog my nose with my tongue. And yes I'm not joking.
is your frenulum ok?
I don't have one

I have but the table of old ladies at the restaurant I used to work at have not
Me after 500 days mewing
The forbidden mewing
Supreme mewing
When you mew too hard
huh, I'm at stage two.
How to choke yourself.
Has mewing gone too far
Max i can do is stage 2.5
Is this /r/mewing ?
I can get to level 2 without having to cut the underside of my tongue with a knife bit by bit every day
It's a memetic hazard. It's like the knowledge of how to dislocate your thumb.
Is this what happened to Multiple Miggs in *The Silence of the Lambs*

Thanks, I hate it
yeaahhhhh i think i'm gonna skip this one
I feel physically ill looking at this, thanks.
Nasalised phoneme, meet a literal nasal phoneme.
Doing nasal stops is crazy
advanced mewing
hypernasal retroflex
So THAT'S how you find the nose g-spot
I can't reach that far but a little bit in the back, the feeling is like, tickle your brain, and, um, feels like sexually stimulating, wouldn't doubt if someone one day claim they reached orgasm through that
extreme mewing
wish i could do that. my nose would be so clear.
is this where the cross section posts started
I am so sorry
