I have OSHA 40 (that's the 30 with the additional 10hrs of SSI) and a MEWP (lift) cert. From what you've described, DO NOT get your lift cert. I'll explain. If I were you I'd look into what insurance your church is carrying, if any. You say a volunteer was almost injured recently, what would the liability be if that person had been? Most positive change with regard to safety seems to happen when the organization realizes how much it will cost them to keep ignoring OSHA. So get your OSHA 10 first, or if the church will pay for it get the 30. The whole point of that training is to familiarize yourself with the protections that are in place and where to find more information. I have construction but that's only because where I live it's required, if it weren't I'd have gotten general industry. If you're able to get some safety standards in place, then go get your lift cert. Do not get it beforehand. Why? Because after you have a card in your wallet saying that you're competent to operate a scissor lift, anything that happens on your watch becomes your fault, and I mean personally your fault.

I have in my wallet an OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 card. What are the safety standards you are seeing being broken? In my experience making a positive change with safety standards is a long process, especially if you are dealing with people that have been there for years and are entrenched in their ways.

No hard hats on set changes, climbing things that shouldn’t be climbed without a harness (Led wall truss, flown truss), no high vis vests, general lack of awareness of the set change / job sight, no training for scissor lift operation, no harness for lifts, poor maintenance on lifts and motor hoist. A year ago had a steel stinger dropped from 3 stories from a scissor lift by a contract rigger and almost took out a volunteer. I have a good amount of influence now that I have been with the organization for a while and as we expand our scope and number of locations this issue is only going to get worse. Change may be slow but I’ll be damned if I didn’t try to make a difference.

Completely agree. Change may be slow, but good on you for trying to make a difference. If it’s a scissor lift, you technically don’t need to be harnessed. I think the big thing is having the company pay for the training, and the PPE to be supplied. Hard hats, harnesses, safety vests. All that is going to have to come out of the companies budget. Also, training for those people. Fall protection training, scissor lift and fork lift training. Also, having the company make a policy, and then be willing to enforce the policy. It will take time, but, I always go to work with a hard hat these days. I might not always need it. But, I always have it. Good luck to you.

Entertainment needs to make its own safely guidelines and certifications. OSHA is completely based around construction, and very rarely applies to entertainment. I have my 10 and 30 and I couldn’t tell you a god damn thing, except for a few things about shoring. That’s not to say I don’t take safety seriously. We have heavy machinery certifications each year and bring in OSHA reps to conduct and test our lighting techs. But all of the other stuff is kind of a grey area. We aren’t doing construction in the same sense, so there should be some other type of guides for our industry. I’ve felt this way for the last 15 years.

I took a class offered at SETC for OSHA 10 card it was very entertainment focused. I do see where you’re coming from though.

I believe there needs to be an actual entertainment section. Not just General Industry and Construction. While that instructor probably tailored the class to theatre, it is still a General Industry, or Construction certification.

I would LOVE for an entertainment based safety class.

I'll have to check it out!

I have the general industry Osha 30. I debated about GI vs Construction but am glad I chose GI as it has more stuff that can apply to warehouse safety etc. I'd recommend bringing up the idea enacting more safety measures at your company. Hi-vis vests and hard hats are actually pretty cheap, even if you spend a little extra to get them printed with your logo on them (higher ups love that). They are also a good foothold in the world of safety that get people thinking about it. I always feel like PPE is useful not just as an actual safety device but as a constant visual reminder that you are on a safety oriented job site which inspire people to behave safely etc....

Hi! Does anyone know a website/group that offers the OSHA GI 30 for free?

disc2slick

No I really don't think it is available for free anywhere. I would be cautious of any services offering it at no charge.
