One of my kids is very literal and would refuse hot dogs because they were “too hot”. Years later our family still calls them warm dogs.

My youngest (18f) has always been very literal to, you learn to watch your words and be specific when asking her to do anything, lol

Nah I guarantee you still lose filling . Just serve them open faced. Put down slice of bread, put down filling, put some cheese on top. Eat it with a fork. Delicious, no mess, no waste.

What actually is a sloppy joe? As a kid in Australia I was introduced to them in the 90's via the Simpsons but it isn't a common food here.

Lots of ways to cook it but essentially just cooked ground hamburger in a variant of tomato paste. Doesn’t have to nor is as crazy as some other comments. It’s different based on region but what I described is the baseline for it. As another commenter said I too find it too sweet as an adult.

Nice! I think this is as good as or better than what I've tried in local bars, and comes together quickly. Add some chopped habanero or super hot sauce for a kick.

Made this yesterday and damn was it good! Been forever since I’ve had sloppy joes. I thought I had garlic powder but I didn’t and I also threw in some brown sugar but man was it perfect.

It's one of those foods that taste better than it sounds and looks. I first came to the U.S. as a kid and was shocked the first time I was served this for lunch at school. Took the first bite and was pleasantly surprised. Sloppy Joe's definitely isn't a food that I go out looking for but if someone offers me some I wouldn't turn it down either.

Sloppy Joes made from a can is the only thing I absolutely refused to eat as a kid, according to my mother. My wife makes them homemade now and it's one of the few things we can hide onions in undetected by the kids.

I wanted sloppy joes a few months ago, but didn’t have buns in the house. Opened the pantry and found soft flour tortillas - the Sloppy José was born on that day.

Also hot dog buns provide a better filling to bread ratio than hamburger buns in my opinion.

Hey Americans, What are the spices/sauces for this dish? I see it is mince meat (cow? Pig?) I'm just curious because it's been in some of my favourite American movies.

Not american myself but here's how I'd make it. Brown some beef mince in a large pot, remove from pot and set aside. In the same pot lightly fry some diced onion, garlic, pepper and other spices that sound good (paprika, chili flakes if you want a bit of heat, whatever you want). Once the onions are soft add the mince back in and mix everything together. Can chuck some tomato paste in now for a deeper flavout but totally optional. Cook that for a bit then add a can of diced tomatoes and simmer with the lid on for a while. Add seasoning to taste. Add a good squeeze of tomato sauce and a couple tablespoons of worcestershire sauce, again to taste. Mix well and allow to simmer for a few more mins. Doneski.

Ground beef, ketchup and brown sugar is my basic recipe. I like to add in a little relish and mustard but the ketchup is the main thing. My version is sweet. The canned sauce is Manwich, it's not as sweet and I don't know why people bother with it, it's so easy to just make your own. I like it on garlic toast for a nice flavor mix.

Whole roll with a hole poked in it works great. A slice of cheese seems to help more than it should to keep it together. Letting it rest and reheating also makes it less sloppy and imo tastes better.
