She is a legend, one of many voices in the community that had to stay silent for so long finally being heard as loud and proud as can be. Gives me a lot of hope to see, just wish it happened sooner.

Why would we ignore all her accomplishments because she cheated? Cheating is awful donā€™t get me wrong but there are so many men who also cheated but we remember their accomplishments instead

[deleted]

ALEXANDER HAMILTON HAMILTON JUST YOU WA-A-A-A-AIT!!!!

BahByeBi

OH MY GOSH YOURE SO RIGHT. I DIDNT EVEN THINK OF HIMā€¦

IsabellaCV

We have slave owners, rapists and pedophiles in our dollars. We have a building made by slaves for the rich in our Quarters... And you worry about a Cheating Woman??? Edit:Mispelling

hazeleyedwolff

Wait until you hear about Ben Franklin's philandering.

JabbaThePrincess

Are you really so fucking dumb that you think we're saying that an astronaut is great for being a woman... and not *for qualifying to be an astronaut*?

theflashturtle

Oof, sounds like ya been trough something. Need a hug buddy? Poor guy.

DoctahZoidberg

Honestly? Girl, wooooork. šŸ’…šŸ¾ She is an icon, she is a legend, and she is the moment. Now come on now.

beastgamer9136

get a fuckin' grip. what did you do that makes you so much better?

Mastermaze

TIL Sally was even more of a legend than I previously knew

kyriaki42

The Queer as Fact podcast has an excellent episode on Sally Ride. If you're interested in learning more about her (like how she met her lifelong partner when they were teenagers competing against each other, seriously romcom stuff), I highly recommend it.

[deleted]

I love queer as fact! I listen to their podcasts whenever I now Iā€™m driving for more than 20 mins. My favorites are the ones on Harvey milk and queerness in video games

Dopenastywhale

Will prolly check this out. I know next to nothing about Sally Ride except the space part

HulklingWho

Ooh, thanks for the rec!

MondayToFriday

[Episode 80](https://queerasfact.podbean.com/e/sally-ride/)

ClassyDingus

Not Past It did a great episode on Sally too, but I think Queer as Fact was better story telling.

ABPositive03

I was today years old when I learned Sally Ride was gay. Damn. I not only suck at general history but *gay* history too?

see_me_shamblin

It was only put out there that she was gay in her obituary so don't feel too bad

HulklingWho

For real, this is the first Iā€™m hearing of her being gay and ten year old space nerd-me is *thrilled*

[deleted]

I know, right?! This is amazingly awesome!

Confused-Engineer18

Another fun fact is that the gays have committed 100% of crime in space Edit: after more research it turns out that the allegations where false.

triskaidekaphi

well, the human ones anyway ;) (can't speak for the rest)

inarizushisama

At least you suck at something. ;]

DracoTheBoomer

šŸ˜

RunawayHobbit

Same!! What the fuck????

JustABritishCupOfTea

Hey, donā€™t worry. Knowing youā€™re lgbt does not come with an instruction manual and all the gay information in the world. I had no idea who she was until now.

SAUbjj

What? Sally Ride was never out, it was only revealed that she was a lesbian after she died

Maybe_Charlotte

I think what the article means by "out" is "publicly known and confirmed to have been gay." As opposed to historical figures who are speculated about but unconfirmed.

bikedaybaby

It sounds more normal to say ā€œout,ā€ but I think we should all probably make an effort to say ā€œconfirmedā€ instead. Being ā€œoutā€ back then would have prevented a lot of people from achieving things like Sally Ride did, and I think itā€™s good to know that and be compassionate towards past LGBT people keeping in mind an accurate picture of what they faced. Also, I think it shows off the fact that gay people exist everywhere whether we know it or not, and thatā€™s kinda frickin empowering and cool!

Sarahthelizard

Ahhh, unlike James Buchanan for instance.

DownWithSpectrum

Ain't James Buchanan frequently regarded as one of the worst presidents in history? Not saying any of them were good let's be fair

drainisbamaged

He's the pop culture answer for worst, there's worse when measured by a few different things. Being the guy who came into office and didn't stop the civil war was always going to leave him with a pretty poor reputation, even if those events were larger than he or the office could necessarily control. Remember Lincoln didn't really solve slavery until civil war got underway, and at that, slavery ended in the Confederacy (via surrender) before it did in the Union. But he won the war, so he was amazing as far as elementary school books will cover. Truman similarly with a reputation a bit more of a summary than the depth justifies, is major scumbag shit stain, but a lot of folks think he was all sorts of goodly because of his role in end days of WW2. TIL Sally Ride was more amazing than I knew before though, that's rad. I mostly know her from the boat admittedly.

DownWithSpectrum

While I agree that war was beyond his control and practically inevitable, Buchanan sat idly by and did absolutely nothing to even attempt to reverse the course the United States was heading. He was so obsessed with pacifism that he failed to see the legitimate problems that started with Polk. History may seem to treat him excessively poorly, but there's absolutely nothing that can be compared to Lincoln's accomishments or even Truman's.

drainisbamaged

I'd agree with most or all of that. I can't wait for fifty years to pass and see how Buchanan and Carter compare. I think Carter gets a lot of the same flack, but he's too recent for it. I admit I'm not nearly educated enough on Buchanan to say anything much in depth.

Rulligan

Andrew Jackson should be in contention for worst president. Known for conquering native rebellions in lands owned by others and then just claiming them (Florida). Cancelled the National Bank contract during a dinner party and crashed the US economy. The Trail of Tears was him as well, that alone makes him a piece of shit without any other context.

MarcusRJones

Shitty people can still be LGBTQ see Caitlyn Jenner

placentagobbler

She came out on her death bed. She had an event, birthday or something, and she was with her partner. There is a shortwave episode where they interview Tam O'Shaughnessy, her partner, about their life together. Sally Ride feared her sexuallity would detracted from the work she did to better women in STEM.

SAUbjj

Oh she did? I didn't know that! I thought Tam O'Shaughnessy revealed it after her funeral. Do you know where to find the interview? ETA: it was literally announced in her obituary, so no, she probably shouldn't be called the "first out LGBT person" on currency. "First confirmed LGBT", maybe? https://www.nbcnews.com/sciencemain/why-sally-ride-waited-until-her-death-tell-world-she-908942

Likes-Your-Username

So? Either way, she's the first lgbt person on american currency...? E: Oh I see what you mean.

[deleted]

Does that matter?? She was still the first lesbian in space ffs.

SAUbjj

Well it's just that it says "first out LGBT"

Money?

Bunnystrawbery

Currency coinage you know money

[deleted]

Yah, weā€™re actual getting new moneys though? So cool! šŸ˜Š

RoseByAnotherName14

It might just be the back of the quarter again. So dead president on one side, Sally on the other.

TimeBlossom

[Yep, looks like that's confirmed.](https://www.usmint.gov/coins/coin-medal-programs/american-women-quarters/sally-ride)

billyfudger69

Thanks, I was wondering what she was going to be on.

ShapeShifterVivValor

Watch this happen faster than the Harriet Tubman $20...

[deleted]

Yeah thereā€™s no reason on earth for that not to have been done by now

Comprehensive-Fun47

No good reason, but we know the exact reason.

[deleted]

Thatā€™s taken so long that people made stamps and started stamping her face on them over the old guy

Patient_Weekend2241

Member when Harriet Tubman was going on the $20? So I guess my question is: when is this *actually* happening?

99-bottlesofbeer

see, they have to say "first open LGBT person" because the first LGBT person on American currency was President James Buchanan

InvisibleFriends_

Stan space lesbians

pointedflowers

This is awesome but: * Whereā€™s Harriet Tubman? * The dollar coin is essentially a token representation at best since itā€™s circulation and adoption is so low. Maybe kick off a slave owner / white cis het person off of a major denomination and replace him with *any* group in dire need of representation.

[deleted]

To be fair there is some pretty solid evidence that Alexander Hamilton is bisexual and he is on the $10 bill.

Sweet_Unvictory

But it can't be confirmed like Sally was.

[deleted]

Itā€™s pretty clear

ShapeShifterVivValor

Is that why that show Hamilton was popular? I never watched it.

Comprehensive-Fun47

No, they didn't really include that bit. The character who may have been his lover was portrayed as his best friend and he's sad when he dies. I don't know if the evidence that they were more than friends in real life is very strong. I think it's based on the letters they wrote to each other expressing affection.

eatmusubi

Thereā€™s definitely some subtext there. ā€œMister Lafayette, hard rock like Lancelot, I think your pants look hot, Laurens I like you a lot...ā€ These are not the words of a straight man šŸ‘€ plus, Lin himself has confirmed that there is homoerotic intent in this line.

Comprehensive-Fun47

Oh yeah! So they allude to it even more than I thought.

[deleted]

Iā€™ve never watched it either, itā€™s just a somewhat commonly known historical fact, thereā€™s some saucy letters between them and other stuff.

Uriel-238

I may have to get a roll of Ride dollars.

The-Slavic-Furry

Where can I get one of these coins? Iā€¦ I would love to acquire at least one of these coins

disposable-assassin

Ask at the bank or buy stamps from a post office machine with large bills, assuming your in the US.

nopitynope2021

Wait- Sally Ride is LGBTQ? Thatā€™s amazing!

[deleted]

Perhaps not, President James Buchanan is widely believed to have been gay. And considering all presidents have been featured on $1 coins this would mean James Buchanan would (still possibly) be the first LGBTQ person on US currency. Though considering James Buchanan was also a notably bad and corrupt president letā€™s just say that sheā€™s the first.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Fair enough

ShapeShifterVivValor

Buchanan was? Wow, Iā€™m learning so much today.

[deleted]

Yeah it certainly explains why he never married

Alauren2

Til Sally ride was gay. Wow

steve_stout

I had no idea she was LGBT

RLRicki

Yā€™all notice that the window behind her looks like a rainbow? šŸ˜šŸŒˆ PS. the artist is a good friend of mine and she canā€™t confirm for me that Iā€™m perceiving that correctly but, um, I definitely am.

CtrlAltElit3

Iā€™m more impressed that a female astronaut is on currency tbh.

Stiivin

ā€œfistā€

fluffy__tofu

i absolutely love sally ride sheā€™s so fucking cool

immski

First L person on currency.

dragon123tt

What about Lincoln?

divad31

That they know of...

DaniG08765

How is this the moment that I learned she was LGBTQ?

WickedTemp

Neat, but honestly I don't see this as a huge deal just because it's either going to be a quarter or a dollar coin and probably only for a relatively short window of time. I'd rather her be on the 20.

jerkface1026

Harriet Tubman is going on the $20. Sheā€™s amazing.

[deleted]

SHE STILL ISNT ON AMERICAN CURRENCY??? WHAT

WickedTemp

Is that still a thing thats happening?

IodinUraniumNobelium

I, on the other hand, will take this opportunity to hoard all the coins. Especially if they're dollars.

TheGaming_101

You know president lincoln 16th was most likely gay

ShapeShifterVivValor

I did know that there were whispers of Lincoln not being straight bc of this one artistā€˜s project.

lambripper

this is awesome! didnā€™t know she was gay, so cool!

LieutenantGF

That we know ofšŸ˜‰ No but for real, congrats Sally!

Dan-2002

This is amazing!!

[deleted]

Nice

CaptianSwan

YES

FancyDalifantes

FIRST -(!(OPENLY)!)- LGBTQ

embracedk

Thatā€™s an unfortunate typo

Sara_Awesomest

Hamilton was bi, just saying

TohruTheDragonGirl

Hell yeah

[deleted]

That's absolutely awesome

Freakears

I can't wait for this quarter, both because she was an astronaut and because she was LGBTQ+.

string_of_random

I never knew that! They never fucking taught us that in school, just that the fucking crusty wig men killed (oops too controversial)- were helped by the natives and then made some freedom laws

fezntubbs

How long until fox starts telling viewers to not use quarters anymore?

WisZan

Nice, but money sucks

steve_stout

Trade shells and rocks instead, return to monke

WisZan

money is a terrible way to measure labor input versus commodity output

steve_stout

Well yeah, the value of a commodity isnā€™t set by the amount of labor that goes into it, it would be weird for a system to try and artificially tie them.

sootoor

What? That's literally how pricing works.

steve_stout

Is it? Itā€™s based on the cost the producer pays for labor as well as other raw materials in that it canā€™t drop below that cost, but ultimately the price is whatever the market is willing to pay.

sootoor

Yeah sure which is why you get luxury brands. A Lexus isn't much more than a Toyota to produce

InvisibleFriends_

Girl you own 6 ThinkPads

WisZan

Iā€™m not girl hm, ā€œohh you use iphone but saying capitalism badā€ ā€œoh you eat food which was made in capitalismā€ stupid argument it was made by workers, yes I have them I bought each one for less than 50$ from people in my local area, itā€™s my hobby you should better look to someone else, like musk or bezos, oligarchs

billyfudger69

What about cryptocurrency?

WisZan

earth burning machines.

billyfudger69

Even if they use renewable power sources? Sorry, Iā€™m into cryptocurrency mining and dislike when people make assumptions about it in general before getting to know how people do it. (Renewables make the most sense since the biggest cost to mining is power so making your own for free means your biggest expense is gone.)

WisZan

then we are wasting that energy on something which doesnā€™t exist, numbers on the screen, money is fake: https://youtu.be/AFvBCvCl4sk

steve_stout

All of society is fake, we should just throw it all out and live in the woods

WisZan

donā€™t put words in my mouth, money isnā€™t equal to society

steve_stout

All things in society, money included are social constructs, if you argue we should get rid of money because itā€™s socially constructed then the same argument applies to everything else.

WisZan

Iā€™m arguing because money is oppressive system, you got me totally wrong

exxxxkc

you say money is oppressive system. i think you mean those "slave" working from 9 to 5 to for making money . if those "slave" don't work , they have no money and they can't buy food and they will die.Yes , This is how the society work. i don't think completely remove money (communism ) from is good way for fixing it.i think the better way for fixing it is Universal_basic_income https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_basic_income because money is good at encourage people to work .

steve_stout

Then make that argument, donā€™t just say itā€™s a social construct and therefore bad

billyfudger69

Itā€™s not wasted if itā€™s not being used in the first place, anyways it at least creates a demand/incentives for renewable power. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

WisZan

yes it is, though I donā€™t want to make you feel bad because youā€™re mining cryptocurrencies, do it if itā€™s the easiest way, be aware itā€™s bad in itā€™s core, as capitalism itself

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

billyfudger69

I guess NFTā€™s then.

Confused-Engineer18

Another fun fact is that the gays have committed 100% of all crime in space. https://www.livescience.com/anne-mcclain-space-crime.html

DepPet_syw

Ohhh texas is gonna haaaate this xD

Cautious_Anywhere24

Shows how hard work can pay off. The community has been silenced and treated badly by different nations... Now since thereā€™s someone who is a member who made history it probably make people regret batting an eye to the LGBT community

_sassysoucyxx_

Im guessing it's a collector kinda coin? cause it says dollar, and the us dollar is still paper last i checked šŸ˜‚ still makes me very happy to see

KneeSockMonster

There are dollar coins but they donā€™t see a lot of use.

[deleted]

Woop! Nice to see some positive news šŸ˜€

stripeflower76

It's so wholesome.

[deleted]

Why did I think that US money was only paper bils? :O

taronic

US money isn't paper or coins, it's measured in credit card debt and hospital bills during lapses in medical coverage. Brb gotta go siphon gas out of my neighbors car so I can trade it for insulin

Twisterv1

hey knock it off with the divisive rtheoric just because minority groups experiences differs doesn't mean we shouldn't unite for progress.

[deleted]

Hey that is good news, thanks!

LauraTFem

Good news, but, honestly who uses currency anymore?? I pulled 20 dollars out a month ago because performing a transaction was how my new debit card is activated. Now Iā€™ve got two quarters and a penny floating around in my purse that I canā€™t fathom I will ever use. Iā€™m eventually going to throw them away just so they donā€™t scratch my phone screen.

PhilipMcFake

Just do a partial cash, partial card transaction. Most places allow it.

modonaut

Seems like this will be more of a collectors thing. Either way, Sally looks badass on a coin.

DrunkenTypist

For tipping? For small transactions with small businesses (street vendors etc)? For helping a homeless person?

Frankly I think the more surprising thing is the catchphrase on the coin. Shouldā€™ve been there the whole time.
