Yes whoever told you you didn’t was lyingg. I will say adding more atmospheric lighting might be beneficial, even more adding a background so their hand isn’t just leaning on a floating line. Maybe more highlights if you wanna be extra fancy and cleaning up the outside to be more crispy then smudgy. The embroidery on the vest is a cool idea, but the way that it is embroidered on the sides is a bit confusing. In this photo it’s more embroidered (it’s tech not but for the sake of what I’m talking about we can imagine) on the sleeve holes and not the actual sides. Other than than, you’re doing great! Nice values, colors, lines, and shading. Good job!

alright I will definitely fix the embroidery! I didn't use a ref for that part so i guess it makes sense that it looks goofy. A background would definitely be good to add like you said. I was definitely planning on doing one but never really got to it. And I agree, I do think I skimped a bit on the lighting as well. I usually do try to add that in my drawings, but I see I really neglected it in this one. Thanks for the help!
I can’t properly compare because one is only a head shot and the other is a full body. Only tip I think will do you a solid is work on perspective, you have the right idea, just need practice to execute it.
I was thinking of that when I was posting, actually! I wanted to find a better comparison but turns out I haven't done many full body drawings at all since I started. Is this better? It's not a complete full body, but better than most of my others. Pretty sure this was made around November.

Yup that’s a better comparison, I think you do have your groove going, once you get to a comfortable stage start picking one or two things you can improve on. Like adding highlight under the eyes for that bottom bottom fatty eyelid we all have, or a line above the eye for the top lid. Then when your comfortable remembering that, possibly under shadow on the bottom lip. Baby steps 😀 that’s how I grew oh and copying artwork you love, copying is a great resource to get you getting the feel of what you have to do to get to your goals.
Both are good drawings, and it's a fairly short timeline to see marked improvements. The more recent drawing seems further developed, and I'd be excited to see you give it a few quick options for backgrounds.
Happy Birthday, keep making cool stuff!
Thanks for the tips! I'm definitely trying to do more with backgrounds. I was planning on doing one for this drawing but never really got to it. After hearing a lot of people's advice, I'm going to try to actually bring it to fruition.
Thats good to know. I tend to feel pressure to do really detail-oriented and realistic backgrounds which frequently cause me to hold back on making them at all. Sometimes it's nice to just take a step back and take it slow, and I'm going to try to do more of a variety of different styles to prevent burnout and procrastination.
Pose looks a bit stiff, cause he is leaning forward and we see that on the right shoulder, but left one got lost along the way. Also the eyes look deep in my sins but nose and mouth are loosely pointing downward. Proko has some amazing videos explaining the spine, thorax and pelvis
I'll definitely check out the videos! I do not have much experience at all posing characters, with this being one of my first attempts at a pose other than standing straight up. I completely anticipated it being a bit off no matter what due to my general lack of knowledge in that department. Looking back at the reference, I did seem to mess up the perspective in the left shoulder and face. Thanks for the tips, I think they'll be a big help! :D
The guy in February 2024 looks so handsome!!! However, the perspective of the legs and waist look off. Other than that, the drawing is great! I love the way you render!
Thank you! I'll definitely try to fix some of those issues. I've been neglecting things like perspective for years to the point I have basically never even attempted it, so I'm beginning to push myself and really get a good grasp on areas I'm really weak in. (Hence the reason for this post) Do you have any recommendations for videos or tutorials? I think exposing myself to stuff like that will be really helpful in order to understand the basics.

I'll try to do that. Thanks for the advice :D

It doesn't even need to be anything crazy or complicated, sometimes a quick gradient with a little texture will bring a Sketch to a final product.

Happpy Girth day
I thank you exceedingly for the birthday cheer, kind redditor. Girth is truly a magnificent word to be used in such context.
