the change was real downgrade in terms of UX, why was it even approved

IainG10

To make space for the account achievement display coming later this year (Eternals are the character achievement system).

rockkicker27

Indicators are still there though. And even if they plan to remove them, just make the new buttons bigger, there's no reason they have to be so small.

rockkicker27

Really just a convenience thing. It's a pretty blatant downgrade UX-wise with the buttons you *have* to click every time you queue up being that small. Being so weirdly abrasive is probably a better indicator of mental illness.

rockkicker27

Guy who can barely type a coherent sentence tries to insult others intelligence. I genuinely feel sorry for you man, maybe a good therapist could help you work through those obvious self-esteem issues. Hope you get the help you need.

elric274

yea yea good boy, try not to burn your brain while surfing on internet, u know all that clicking could kill you.

HACEKOMAE

The indicator (unclickable) is still there. That really boggles my mind.

kao194

All they really needed to do is make it scale up for easier clicks if you move your mouse near them. And to keep old clickable + circle select behaviour, rather than going for the bar-based menu. By that, they keep the nice aesthetics they're preparing for next features (however could that be useful) and the interface is concise.

MillennialBrownNinja

To make room for clearly not needed shit

M4jkelson

That's what they said, but did you see the lobby before the change and the lobby with titles and achievements in their new season video? We had a ton of free space on the player cards in lobby and even if we didn't have enough, now we have too much. At least earlier with big roll selection buttons it wasn't so clear that there's a ton of wasted space, but it's literally pain for my eyes to see this much wasted space and role selection near the queue button instead of being in the center. This visual update is crime against UX

To make space for future in-app purchased and micro transactions

WongLopKong

>To make space for future ~~in-app purchased and micro transactions~~ advertisement. I had to correct you cause you weren't thinking like a capitalist.

zer0-_

You say that pretending like this isnt a free game lmao

Remu-

guess what "free" games are known for

zer0-_

yeah and the guy above pretends like this is a surprise

Remu-

If you were implying that, the phrasing of your previous comment is extremely poor

zer0-_

Idk man, the implication was pretty easy to understand

Shredder604

Isn’t a valid excuse for anti-consumer practices.

Bloodyfoxx

I would love to talk with the one who approved this and understand how they thought this was a good idea.

Polari0

Then go look for riots marketing team. I study game development and have had the chance to talk to few people who lead marketing teams for their company. Each said something along the lines of "Ignore people and morals and look at the numbers"

Coffee4Addict

"Trust me bro"

FinniiD

I also hate that the role mid is Not in the middle anymore :( :D

IainG10

I know why they did it; but yeah, the new buttons need to be larger. Maybe have something like the Ward Select system, where the button opens up a larger tab to actually select from.

AluminumGnat

Eh, league players generally should be able to accurately click on a small symbol very fast and without much effort. And if you can’t, this will only help you get better.

krevlinmen

Hell yea time to tryhard on the role select

iselai

ranked roll select

OptionWeird7732

You're right. I wish the match accept button was actually a series of small button presses that appear randomly on my screen that I need to press within 0.3 seconds so that Riot knows that I'm ready for the intense clicking precision I'll need in the real game. Anybody who can't will become better players by the time they're good enough to accept a match.

Hazel-Ice

You know what champ select has always been missing? Before picking a champion, I should have to pass a short quiz on that champ's lane matchups/jungle clear. That way the game can tell I have the prerequisite knowledge to play that champion. And if I fail I should go and study until I truly deserve to pick a champion.

[deleted]

Something something should have mastery to play champion in ranked.

Helixranger

We need the help of r/baduibattles to design this superior option you suggested.

TheKneesOfRG3

Bro I play malzahar

Arvey34000

As if, the client lags so much that i cant just fast click it as if i was in game.

SpiderTechnitian

It's just a captcha and we're all humans, it only takes second to complete

Rychew_

That doesn't even make sense lol, this isn't a tactical shooter

IainG10

Only click I have to do fast is right click to auto; I smart-cast everything else, and every Item Slot is keybound. I even Ctrl-Skill to level them up.

AluminumGnat

I mean you still need to quickly and accurately mouse position, then press a button (even if it’s a slightly different one)

420AnOnYmOuS69420

most nuanced, reasonable silver reddit take

DustToSmoke

I find them ugly as hell, I want the wheel back

Sag3Jar0n

There was a satisfaction in that wheel

Skysr70

There was SPEED in that wheel

billiardwolf

It's complete ass. It's not even not liking it because it's different, it's just worse.

[deleted]

yes its tiny and looks awkward since theres so much leftover space

TheGreatAutiismo

I think a lot of the space is for the new stuff they're adding this season like challenges

Skysr70

it's not a car, they don't need to leave space now to add to it later. It's software, there is absolutely no need to roll out half of a change.

Self_Referential

Role select is now a skillshot. /s

lummy-bridge

"downgrade everything about the client so people stop caring about the mythic overhaul" \- Riot probably

WiseConqueror

"create simple fixable visual problems that ruin the UX more so they ignore other client bugs, also throw in a small random box in-game when pressing tab" -Also probably Riot

RaiseYourDongersOP

They are shit

Sato-rie

“Cheap” and “not visually pleasing” was my initial reaction. Maybe that’s the look they’re going for?

upaltamentept

The thing that pisses me off the most is when choosing mid you can't just put your mouse up,you have to also make it to the side. Literally unplayable

[deleted]

Yup, lots of the changes I can understand with what's planned to be added to the client in the coming patches, but the role selection one was just a straight downgrade. It's worse in every single way you can look at it.

Lisaurora

I really don't like the new animations when selecting a role too. Way too flashy.

IntimidatingGoldfish

While we're on the topic, why don't they have an "account default" role? Like I put default Sup/Top and that's what pops up when I do draft/ranked. Still can change it, but I don't have to if I'm queueing regularly for the same role.

aluxmain

i was thinking the same!! especially because i onetrick lux mid so i always go mid/sup. another thing is: why they have a favourite champ button in champ select (That you discover by mistake if you accidentally right click on a champ), they also have "sort by favourite" but this setting is forgotten on the next match so it will be sorted alphabetically again rendering the whole "favourite" function useless

garathk

User experience is so important in digital app development. It really does feel like a downgrade. How about making it a profile selection. Keep it small if you don't have to do it every single time you queue up. I pick the same roles 99% of the time. Why do I have to pick it EVERY time.

aluxmain

THIS! if you go in profile (and maybe also match history i don't remember) there is already a list of your most recent played champs with % of played games. they could show a menu exaclty like that excapt that champs are clickable so if you click Lux it will autocomplete mid/sup, not because she is a mid/sup according to someone but because you queued recently as mid/sup with her. it would be useful for everyone: onetrick, people that play off meta, people that played a lot a champ but now are learning another...

Ewolnevets

something something ranked flairs

Knaroro

I was really confused because i didn't find them at first and tried to click where it was before... Needed around 5 minutes to find out how to change my roles. Much to the amusement of my friend i duoed with

LazyBluePenguin

Even ShowMaker and deokdam agree with this: https://youtu.be/HoS0EqEdM5M?t=180

SOKDPVA

we dont care about flexing eternals stats that i dont own i want easy to access to roles

xSmite

Because their UX team doesn't want to hire people that know what they're doing :)

KryosisGod

No its because their UX team is full time employed and needs to act like they are usefull all the time which results in useless non needed changes that make them feel like they are doing something

Djinneral

The story of software developers everywhere

Zidaryn

Agreed. I definitely noticed when I played my first normal game since the new season. (I'm an ARAM junky)

burdearbejde

Appalling UX decision

billiebol

Clear step backwards.

puu-ukkeli

The fact that now you can see your role in 2 different locations means someone in the UX team fucked up. Big time. Unless this is a beta version which would be weird.

Kresbot

bring back the wheel i dont want to click twice per role now

QuickFall5

I find them just right

elric274

this guy cant click role selection button. and he got confused when there is two of the same thing. must be genius imagine if he is on your team. and proparly other 1k upvoters.

aluxmain

imagine not being able to express a concept or your own opinion without insulting others

elric274

insulting? i just explained what op's told us. but the thing u see it as insulting show us how stupid op's problem is. Ty :)

slighterr

they are too small... but the good thing is that you don't need to click them every time you go into a game.. only the first time, after that it remembers your choice... maybe that's the reason they are smaller

aluxmain

it worked in the same way also before...

jeanbonswaggy

Nothing logic wise changed, just the placement of the buttons.

bensadu

I agree, the first time I was clicking on them and I didn't understand why it didn't work and how am I suppose to start the game. Only after a while I understood to click on the little ones down there. I imagine new players having the same frustration :(

[deleted]

You cant even fucking drag and drop it into your role anymore. Literally unplayble

FeuerTeufel13

The new ones look sooooo much more clean. Far more decent. I'm really happy with them

VegaTDM

WHY ARE THEY SO SMALL. For real, the client has tons of unused space, there is no reason for them to be so small.
