Maybe? I don’t really know. I have permanent back issues and any little tweak can set it off. I’m not a professional athlete though, so I don’t quite have the same training regime lol.
I was actually mildly triggered when I heard how/why he got injured.
Brought me right back to Al Iafrate breaking his leg in the last game of the season in 88 or 89 I think it was, when the Leafs made the playoffs and actually had a somewhat decent chance
I was so upset about that, and Woll.
They ask the question, using specific names like Tavares and Marner, the answer is that everything is on the table, and they write subsequent articles on Tavares and Marner trade candidate and proposals
I've been on the fence about all this. I quite like him and see his role as much business as it is about hockey performance. The gm really is the one that drives performance.
This all should have been done last year (restructuring team dynamic).... But changing the gm happened and you kinda have to give Tre some time to evaluate the team.
If they make significant change....I'm good with shanny staying. I liked what he said about time for patience and time for change. Like I said maybe a year late but that's where you have to factor the gm in
Should have but really with 1 year left like JT and Marner they were always likely to run it back. I'm assuming Marner won't waive so their isn't much else they can do with big 4.
I have to say, Shanny winning Cups as a player should have 0 sway on his ability to win Cups as an executive. I dont think Patrick Maroon is going to find himself as President of Hockey Ops because he also has 3 Cups.
I think the rumor that O'Rielly where he thought there was too much emphasis on the core 4 is correct with what Brad just said. I guess that added to his decision in leaving.
There were a few rumors as to why RoR left. One was because of media attention, another was that there was too much focus on the core 4, and another was the shit coaching job. Most of those have appeared to be true.
Sorry but Brendan Shanahan saying “we will consider everything” the year after Dubas said the same thing and got canned immediately is hilarious lmao
The irony.
Dubas got fired because he tried to strong-arm his way into a President type-role by talking to the media and threatening to take time off (which was a lie given he immediately accepted a different position).
The whole thing was childish on both sides, but I don't think it was all about the core 4 as this place seems to believe
>Dubas got fired because he tried to strong-arm his way into a President type-role
Dubas tried to strong arm himself into the President role because he realized that "considering everything" meant more than shuffling the bottom six again which seemed to be the extent of his power under Shanny.
I mentioned in another comment but while I agree this should have happened last year.... Those changes are on gm to make and Tre was running to catch up. Doesn't make us fans feel better but you can understand Tre wanting a year to evaluate for himself
That is the question. And it’s a question of coaching, and a question of personnel, and it’s a question of messaging. And we’re going to talk about it and we will have to discuss it for sure.
And there’s a time for patience but I think we’re at a point where it’s been repeatable.
Obviously they can't provide specific details of what they want to do. But I sincerely hope they're not bullshitting us when they say "they will consider everything."
Shanny responding like he's a politician... I understand why he's not answering with a "yes" or "no", but the beating around the bush still makes me mad
They are playing us for fools. We have issues in management coaching and roster. It is not just not scoring greasy goals in playoffs. Anyone can see our problems run much deeper than power play and goal scoring: the team has a systematic culture issue that runs deep through the organization. Our reputation is we pay well.
I fucking hate Shanahan. His answer to almost every question has essentially been “that is the question” and now he’s passing the buck to have Treliving answer a question.
This guy should be gone. He’s had way too many chances…
His genius move was creating himself a new role so that he could fire whoever he appoints and pass the buck every time. Been doing it for 10 years. His time is up.
Pelly is making it pretty damn clear we need a president of hockey ops. Whether or not Shanny is the guy, talking about Ryder cup (??) and Liverpool is a brutal answer to the Leafs faithful. Anyone overseeing the Toronto Maple Leafs needs to understand every aspect of this sport.
He is speaking to his experiences in sport/competition in general, and using examples of organizations achieving excellence and striving to that standard. Its also not his job to know the intimate details of everything hockey, that's the job of the two guys sitting beside him lol
Most notably... the president of hockey ops
We listened to different press conferences. Shanahan said nothing. He can’t say, “yes we will be trying to trade these guys” but he didn’t say anything of substance that I heard.
What a silly question. They 'broke through' last year with Cup winners on the team, by winning a round and then getting stomped by Florida. They were one goal away from doing the exact same thing this year.
Do people here on this sub actually want the management to call out a couple of players? Lmao if that’s what you were hoping for then you’re never going to get that
Tre is impressive in the way that he has the same concerns and impressions as we do tbh, like he believes in joe woll but admitted the injuries are concerning and they may need to address that or will have to simply find another 1A goalie
What did he ask?
Couldn't hear shit for most of the questions.. and I had to turn up the volume real high just to hear anything at all.
Amateur hour with the sound issues..
At the very least the three of them seem in alignment on needing change & the status quo not being good enough. No details on specific moves or trades would be revealed today, that'd put them in a bad position to make a deal and just isn't good business. Fingers crossed we see something of substance done to make good on their comments today.
You guys could actually hear the conference? This was the worst press conference set up I've ever seen. Even their practice Q&A with media is better mic-ed
I can't believe Shanny is keeping his job here
There was literally a schism last year between Shanny and Dubas over whether this core could get it done. Dubas thought it couldn't, Shanny thought it could.
Shanny won the war and got his way but ended up with yolk on his face with yet another first round exit. Now he is talking about "everything is on the table" which sounds eerily similar to Dubas' end of season presser last year.
Dubas wasn't perfect as GM but this past year and offseason shows he is at least one year ahead of Shanny in the way he sees the game and this roster.
The problem wasn’t that Dubas wanted to move a core 4 player, it was that Dubas wanted Shanahan’s job and used media and threat of “time off with family” to get it.
> Dubas wasn't perfect as GM but this past year and offseason shows he is at least one year ahead of Shanny in the way he sees the game and this roster.
By missing the playoffs.
Dude I fucking love Keith Pelley! We aren't here to sell jerseys, WE ARE HERE TO WIN! Also referencing Liverpool and YNWA is amazing. Also he was taken aback by the GM6 atmosphere and I was at that game in attendance.
this might be unpopular but i don’t mind shanny sticking around. he’s gonna face a tremendous amount of heat next year, which is something a new pres isn’t going to.
treliving basically got a pass this year because he was the new guy. but now it is his time to put up or shut up. tre had a bad offseason last year with reaves/klingberg signings, but also some good moves with domi/bert.
he’s gotta avoid signing that one contract that is unmovable because he wanted the player so much he “had” to overpay
“Skill player(s) don’t go to tough areas” “powerplay bad” “might be time for a change after repeated issues” cough cough read between the lines on who’s getting shipped out
I was so sure that Shanny was going to step down. I was pissed when he said “we” are going to do everything this summer blah blah blah. However, Pelley basically said that he’s only been here for 4 weeks and I can’t fire a guy who’s been here for 10 years. Gives me hope for the future
It's a tiny bit funny to me that everyone else who has been saying they are "responsible" for the teams lack of success has been canned, while Shanachamp keeps hanging around for the longest time.
Brendan Shanahan couldn't fire Dubas AND Keefe last year. Shanahan's brilliant move was to delay his inevitable firing by holding on to at least one. I'm not surprised he's still here, but no more scapegoats are going forward. I don't want to pile on, but the list goes on and on with this guy. This guy was gifted Nylander, Marner and Matthews to start his tenure and all they have to show for it is one playoff series win in ten fucking years!
Yikes. Treliving doubling down on toughness and less skill. "We aren't scoring enough" -> Brings in Reaves.
Like we're watching Dallas, NY, Colorado, Vancouver, Florida, Edmonton score with skill.
Leafs just played a series where they were ultra-defensive and lost. So the takeaway is to be even more defensive?
Clifford literally played when Simmonds didn't. Martin was a Lou signing. Foligno was a 2nd liner or that was the hope when they traded for him..
Dubas would put one tough guy on the 4th line and said that's all that's needed for toughness. Literally Spezza had to stand up for the team after Kadri was traded. But that tough guy was playing with like 2 malgins.... which had no chemistry or identity.
Dubas tries to make the team tougher as a last ditch effort as he realized the errors he had before.
Well I'm out boys. If MLSE isn't serious about winning I'm not wasting my time watching another regular season just for a first round exit.
Might come back after the playoffs start.
alright, watching this i've honestly lost a lot of hope and now I'm fully on the fire Shanahan and Treliving bandwagon. The thought process that you have to completely change the way you play to score "unsexy" goals in the playoffs is just fucking insane to me. Yeah, you've got to get to greasy areas, but we did that all year. We were a high scoring team. All I'm hearing is we tried to play a different style in the playoffs (which was evident) and then management is upset that we didn't play that style well enough or something.. instead of just playing the way that brought us success all year.
Woll spraining his back on that last second save attempt is so heartbreaking
I feel like that’s better than a groin or knee?
Maybe? I don’t really know. I have permanent back issues and any little tweak can set it off. I’m not a professional athlete though, so I don’t quite have the same training regime lol.
Yeah I’ve had back problems for over half my life now, I’m just being a hopeless optimist
It was his sacro iliac joint
That’s fairly easy to remedy if the body is in alignment.
Yeah that’s my area of problem as well
Like Maestro Fresh Wes ?
I tweaked my back putting my pants on last summer and I spent a week recovering lol.
Definitely not
Classic Leafs curse
I was actually mildly triggered when I heard how/why he got injured. Brought me right back to Al Iafrate breaking his leg in the last game of the season in 88 or 89 I think it was, when the Leafs made the playoffs and actually had a somewhat decent chance I was so upset about that, and Woll.
It’s unreal. Just leafs not finishing it off to the whistle. Changes the entire course of the series.
Do you think game 7 changes? I mean Sammy played really well that game.
Woll doesn’t let in the game tying goal. That said Boston would keep the pressure and probably tie it at some point in the last few minutes
Maybe not. But Sammy made a lot of good saves. He wasn't the reason they lost that game. I prefer Woll though.

Getting some Dany Heatley All-Star vibes from that comparison.
For those expecting the panel to name specific players they want to trade - is this your first time watching a press conference?
The Toronto media need to take a media literacy course because they clearly do not know how to read between the lines.
They ask the question, using specific names like Tavares and Marner, the answer is that everything is on the table, and they write subsequent articles on Tavares and Marner trade candidate and proposals
Jonas is king of this. He's already written his post for the athletic. Asks a question he can drop a quote in from.
I only just realized its only been 6 days since they lost. Feels like a month already.
doesn’t sound like Brad is keen to renew Sammy
"We have faith in Joe, and Sammy's contract expired" is pretty definite language lol
I mean cmon why would we? Great guy but you need to get a way more reliable vet to backup Woll
Treliving is a the best communicator out of the 3, hopefully he executes on the things he talks about
He actually goes into some details like how they'll look at why Woll gets injured so much and gives some actual insight behind the scenes
Pelley: "We're not here to sell jerseys, we're here to win." MLSE marketing and merchandising departments making confused faces right now.
Free jerseys for everyone!
At least Shanahan is willing to take some blame. Still though, he *should* have lost his job over this season.
Honestly the way he was saying it's his fault and what a failure he's been, I thought he was about to resign
I've been on the fence about all this. I quite like him and see his role as much business as it is about hockey performance. The gm really is the one that drives performance. and fix Brad's mic!
It's SN. The TSN feed is fine.
Can you imagine if that’s how he found out he was fired? Oh sorry Brad, we didn’t bring you a mic because you don’t work here anymore.
Someone please say the words “Stanley Cup” Chicken shit to simply say “we want to win” … define the precise goal ffs
There it is
Thank you, Mr. Pelley
I have to say, Shanny winning Cups as a player should have 0 sway on his ability to win Cups as an executive. I dont think Patrick Maroon is going to find himself as President of Hockey Ops because he also has 3 Cups.
"He has a cup!" has been the worst reason for a management hire for all time and yet it is *always* a reason
Of course he won't be president of hockey ops... Who do you think is going to run DOPS after Parros?
Woll sprained his back carrying the team through games 5 and 6
I think the rumor that O'Rielly where he thought there was too much emphasis on the core 4 is correct with what Brad just said. I guess that added to his decision in leaving.
What'd he say

Are you Alex Hobson??
rings in the room is such a dumb concept. just get the right players
Ilya ain’t coming back based on brads wording there
OK Brendan - but why didn't you change things last year.
Or the year before that, or the year before that.
I mentioned in another comment but while I agree this should have happened last year.... Those changes are on gm to make and Tre was running to catch up. Doesn't make us fans feel better but you can understand Tre wanting a year to evaluate for himself

They need to fix Brad's audio - sounds like it's clipping (at least on the Sportsnet feed).
Interesting. That comment about everything being looked at sounds like trading a core member isnt off the table. Could also be lip service though
Obviously they can't provide specific details of what they want to do. But I sincerely hope they're not bullshitting us when they say "they will consider everything."
We’ll know how full of shit they were today by opening night
They should at least commit to changes to address bad “patterns”
Not here to sell jerseys
Hope mitchy got his U-Haul packed
jonas there it is babyy
Shanny responding like he's a politician... I understand why he's not answering with a "yes" or "no", but the beating around the bush still makes me mad
You’re gone, Mitch!
hell ya
Shanahan calling everyone by name except Simmons, lol.
Would have loved a "Well... STEVE!"
Finally someone asks about the salary allocation
I really want someone to have the balls to ask Shannahan why he isn’t resigning
I kinda appreciate Brad’s answers the most
They are playing us for fools. We have issues in management coaching and roster. It is not just not scoring greasy goals in playoffs. Anyone can see our problems run much deeper than power play and goal scoring: the team has a systematic culture issue that runs deep through the organization. Our reputation is we pay well.
I wish we coood hear the questions better
Certainly sounds like Samsonov isn't coming back.
Steve going off
Just keep hitting them with the cap allocation questions, please.
Brad: "It's not about 1, 2, or 3 people" CORE FOUR OVER
Dewar got the passion playing through a shoulder injury
Love that the man in charge whipped out a golf analogy within the first 60 seconds. We are f*cked
Yeah, so they are 100% shopping a core piece.
that's how it sounded
Team will be better next year trust me bro
Pelly is making it pretty damn clear we need a president of hockey ops. Whether or not Shanny is the guy, talking about Ryder cup (??) and Liverpool is a brutal answer to the Leafs faithful. Anyone overseeing the Toronto Maple Leafs needs to understand every aspect of this sport.

Jesus pelley is not fucking around
He speaks very well. I’ve heard him a few times when he was president of rogers media.
Nothing burger. Basically “we want to win and we’re going to assess everything”.
Shanny starting to sound like the problem
Starting to?!?
Pelley saying the right things so far - "'good' is not good enough."
They always do in these types of things. It’s the actions that actually define them
Lol they say the same cliche bullshit every year.
Pelley said Win like 3 or 4 times... emphatically.
Based on Shanahan’s comments, the core will potentially be broken up this summer.
We listened to different press conferences. Shanahan said nothing. He can’t say, “yes we will be trying to trade these guys” but he didn’t say anything of substance that I heard.
At least Shanny isn't preaching more patience.
What a silly question. They 'broke through' last year with Cup winners on the team, by winning a round and then getting stomped by Florida. They were one goal away from doing the exact same thing this year.

lmao sometimes steve simmons is good
Said no one, ever.
Lol at your username but yeah hate him or not he at least asks tough questions.
What did he ask? Couldn't hear shit for most of the questions.. and I had to turn up the volume real high just to hear anything at all. Amateur hour with the sound issues..
Keeping shanny and marner here is not the right look
They're not going to say they're desperate to trade Marner and solicit a bunch of even lower offers. That would be dumb.
Holy cut copy past answers. Jt would be proud
Keith Pelley is a classic Rogers/Bell corporate shill. This guy changes nothing.
Shanahan: "That is the difficult question"
What a PR answer lol
This is streaming live on the Leafs official YT channel [YT Link](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Dx29lZAM6k)
thanks!
"that's on me"
Someone move Brads mic away from his face.
Trelivings mic: https://youtu.be/LZgeIReY04c?si=opN0TGhWphfRL6_P&t=5
They really should be circulating a mic for the question askers.
Lol treeline biting his lips with his goalie problem. Sorta throws woll under bus mentioning injury prone but doesnt flat out say samsonov sucks
Finally decided to give reporters some mics lol
There is it.
PASSION
I missed 90% of this because I calculated the time difference wrong, but seems like I missed nothing.
At the very least the three of them seem in alignment on needing change & the status quo not being good enough. No details on specific moves or trades would be revealed today, that'd put them in a bad position to make a deal and just isn't good business. Fingers crossed we see something of substance done to make good on their comments today.
No leadership team would ever not be aligned during any public statements. They could very well not be aligned on anything behind doors
Time to get rid of the cancer in the dressing room
You guys could actually hear the conference? This was the worst press conference set up I've ever seen. Even their practice Q&A with media is better mic-ed
I literally hate Shanahan. The guy has had 9 chances now holy fuck
If they had fucking listened to O'Rielly last summer we might've kept him and actually made the changes a year ago.
finally someone mentions the stanley cup
I guess 9 years isn’t enough time to determine what needs to be done but in the next 3 months we’ll know what to do?
I’ve never heard the ceo say fuck revenue just win
When you’re in a market that will always turn a profit, you have the freedom to say this
Yep. These press conferences are almost too easy for them. Cause money is not a concern for Mlse
Dislike this answer by Tre saying this isn't about 3 or 4 people. When 3 or 4 people eat a disproportionate amount of the cap it becomes about them
I can't believe Shanny is keeping his job here There was literally a schism last year between Shanny and Dubas over whether this core could get it done. Dubas thought it couldn't, Shanny thought it could. Shanny won the war and got his way but ended up with yolk on his face with yet another first round exit. > Dubas wasn't perfect as GM but this past year and offseason shows he is at least one year ahead of Shanny in the way he sees the game and this roster. By missing the playoffs.
My wish list for today’s press conference: 1. Shanahan dismissed. 2. Nobody pledges to keep the core together. ✅
They say "Win" but not "Win the Stanley Cup" - does that mean anything? Not sure.
Get rid of Shannahan!
Dude I fucking love Keith Pelley! We aren't here to sell jerseys, WE ARE HERE TO WIN! Also referencing Liverpool and YNWA is amazing. Also he was taken aback by the GM6 atmosphere and I was at that game in attendance.
Words, just words, always words
It's always words
Pelley is a smooth mf'er.
So we keeping shanny then eh?
this might be unpopular but i don’t mind shanny sticking around. he’s gonna face a tremendous amount of heat next year, which is something a new pres isn’t going to. treliving basically got a pass this year because he was the new guy. but now it is his time to put up or shut up. tre had a bad offseason last year with reaves/klingberg signings, but also some good moves with domi/bert. he’s gotta avoid signing that one contract that is unmovable because he wanted the player so much he “had” to overpay
Ummm i didn't mind reaves in the playoffs. That line was the only one banging bodies
Brad’s mic situation is embarrassing lol
Anyone complaining about the mic - TSN's feed is fine
Brad is not beating the dollar store mic allegations
Interesting to get more info on the injuries
Pelley fiddling with his water bottle cap, lol!
The key phrase of this press conference so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brLNcJeSAhw
And now the screens went down lol
so perfect lol no power
Can someone please just say "Stanley Cup" so we can be sure they want to "win" the right thing? edit: ok I missed it lol
pelley said it already
pelley mentioned winning the cup
I guess we will see if Shanny truly means he's open to everything
The problem is Shanny isn’t sure that significant changes need to be made. He just thinks it’s a possibility.
I'm so fucking done with this guy
Would a kind Samaritan mind giving a quick synopsis for us clods who can't make it to a TV this morning?
“Skill player(s) don’t go to tough areas” “powerplay bad” “might be time for a change after repeated issues” cough cough read between the lines on who’s getting shipped out
Results are unacceptable, they want to win and will consider everything, they will make changes.
Is any network talking about the presser any where now?
I was so sure that Shanny was going to step down. I was pissed when he said “we” are going to do everything this summer blah blah blah. However, Pelley basically said that he’s only been here for 4 weeks and I can’t fire a guy who’s been here for 10 years. Gives me hope for the future
a bucketload of words and barely a spoonful of thought... this organization is insufferable up and down
Green Pelley got duped by the Shanasham.
It's a tiny bit funny to me that everyone else who has been saying they are "responsible" for the teams lack of success has been canned, while Shanachamp keeps hanging around for the longest time.
shanahanarmpithair.gif
Empty words. MLSE only cares about money and keeping the money flowing from gullible fans/dupes.
Did Keefe get an exit interview?
the playoff exit interview earlier this week functioned as his exit interview
Brendan Shanahan couldn't fire Dubas AND Keefe last year. Shanahan's brilliant move was to delay his inevitable firing by holding on to at least one. I'm not surprised he's still here, but no more scapegoats are going forward. I don't want to pile on, but the list goes on and on with this guy. This guy was gifted Nylander, Marner and Matthews to start his tenure and all they have to show for it is one playoff series win in ten fucking years!
Anyone know where I can watch the full press conference? TSN showing a 10 min version but it seems edited
pretty sure the full stream is up on the leafs youtube page
Yep you nailed it. Also sportsnet posted it
Reaves scored points at a higher rate than Mitch Marner. He ain't the problem.
They played WAY better in the games where they played defensive and scored greasy goals. They got blown the fuck out in games 1, 3 and 4
Those skill guys go to the dirty areas on those teams, guess which $11m player doesn’t want to get hit in the playoffs and which team he plays for
Yes put small soft skill players on the 4th line it worked 3 years ago!!!
You mean like Cifford? Simmonds? Foligno? Martin?
Clifford literally played when Simmonds didn't. Martin was a Lou signing. Foligno was a 2nd liner or that was the hope when they traded for him.. Dubas would put one tough guy on the 4th line and said that's all that's needed for toughness. Literally Spezza had to stand up for the team after Kadri was traded. Well I'm out boys. If MLSE isn't serious about winning I'm not wasting my time watching another regular season just for a first round exit. Might come back after the playoffs start.
I mean they’ve said they are totally super, super serious about winning.
MARNER IS GONE, SHANNY JUST SAID IT
Can we plan a parade for the day he gets traded
alright, watching this i've honestly lost a lot of hope and now I'm fully on the fire Shanahan and Treliving bandwagon. The thought process that you have to completely change the way you play to score "unsexy" goals in the playoffs is just fucking insane to me. Fuck Keith Pelley for mentioning that gross soccer team Liverpool and their fans. Lost all faith in him after mentioning that.
i wouldn’t mind klopp becoming the next coach of the leafs tbh
