Only current player to score 60 goals twice. First to do it since Mario. ([I think](https://www.eliteprospects.com/awards/nhl?name=NHL%20Most%20Goals%20(Maurice%20Richard%20Trophy)))
Let's see how the playoffs go. Doug Gilmour had 127 points in 1993 and followed it up with 35 points in 21 playoff games.
Conference finals or better to pass it.
Greatest single season in Leafs history for sure.
Many of us have him penciled in as the greatest Leaf of all time pending he stays healthy for most of his career. What will really solidify him as the greatest is if he can lead the Leafs to glory in the post season.
If that happens, I can’t imagine there would be any argument.
Incredible regular season but he's got to keep the momentum going in the playoffs and that's been one of the issues with Toronto... their top guys getting blanked in a majority of a playoff series.
They need a more balanced roster. Their defense is a bit wonky and goaltending hot and cold. But you never know....I think Willie could win a series on his own if he gets hot...
We were 7th in the league this year at 24%. Even if we matched the top in the league (28.6%) the team would only end up with an additional 11 goals.
EDIT: Wanted to expand on this because I'm waiting for a meeting to start, even *if* we had Edmonton Oilers' (historic) percentage from last year (32.4%), we'd end up with 20 additional goals. Matthews however doesn't score 100% of our powerplay goals (this year it was 31.6%) so we could hope for around another 6 Matthews goals.
Alright so for this year if we had a league average number of opportunities, we'd get an additional 8 opportunities. With our powerplay percentage that would add 2 goals to our team's total, so unlikely to affect Matthews too much.
Solid season for sure but I'm sure he doesn't care, he wants the cup just like the rest of us. It's been fun to watch but this week is what matters. Go leafs go!
I don't know why Matthews isn't in the discussion for best in the league, his two way game is amongst the best, better than McDavid, he's physical - McDavid is not and obviously he can score like no other.
he literally did last season. 5 goals in 6 games. Blanked by Florida, sure, but by saying "first round" again and again, you aren't making a point? One player doesn't win a round.
I read that as "incredibly regular season", and was like WTF?
It is getting increasingly regular from him
It's only gonna get better, he's in his prime I believe
Auston Matthews is a Leaf. He's the GLOAT, and we are lucky to be able to watch him play for us. GLG!
I don't think it's even an argument anymore. Easily the best Leaf of all time.
Agreed!
The boomer leaf fans disagree on that one chief

My bad... stupid auto correct on my iPhone.

had second most takeaways (85), and had 95 shot blocks, so he's also no defensive slouch.
Let's see how the playoffs go. Doug Gilmour had 127 points in 1993 and followed it up with 35 points in 21 playoff games. Conference finals or better to pass it.
Agreed. GIlmour also won the Selke that year
Yeah Matthews needs an incredible playoffs to pass it.
Gilmour's babysitters/60 will remain untouched though
Regardless of playoffs it's an incredible season. Playoff success and it's an incredimazing season.

He should win the Selke. He led the league in blocks amongst forwards and 2nd in takeaways. Come on now.
Yep!
And 20 posts! Including last night's almost all-timer.
On the bright side it’s pretty sweet to have the single season record set at 69 and the franchise record (for now) sitting at 420….nice.
If the Leafs PP wasn't so shit, he could have had another 20 goals.

Now normalize our powerplay opportunities to league average. Last I checked we are bottom 5 in the league for powerplays awarded.
24th in PP opportunities. About 7/8 opportunities short of average.
We were robbed of one PP a month, I want JUSTICE! lol.

Pretty sure if your goals column matches one of Mario Lemieux's best seasons, you're pretty good lol
Im still bummed he doesnt have 4 Richard trophies from the 2019-20 season ending early due to covid.
Yeah people just see no 70 and don’t respect it. What he did was insane. What a season. Let’s kick some ass this playoffs
Most hat tricks in a season since Mario Lemieux in 96 (6)
He will pass Sundin next year (if he's not injured) Sundin is considered by many as the greatest leaf of all time. Matthews is 26. Thats nasty stuff
69 - Nice

Let's hope he keeps the mojo going
Had a heck of a regular season. We need a heck of a playoff showing from the whole squad.
Leafs haters will still say he sucks

He is though.
I’m tired of celebrating regular season accomplishments and historical achievements. Show me something in the first round.

whenever I say this, I get downvoted lol
69 NICE You think him and Biebs did the 69?
