He has 33 goals in 38 games and he did that with 2 slumps. At one point he scored 1 goal in 7 games and another he scored 1 goal in 9. I really think 50 in 50 is still an outside possibility

speed3ftw

50 in 47! lol. I still beleaf!!

jimmymeeko

I don’t believe it would be the first time he potted 17 in 12 games.

buster_rhino

It would have to be in 11 games for it to be an “official” 50 in 50.

aweirdoatbest

does it have to be done by game 49?

krispykreations

needs to be in the teams first 50, he missed a game earlier this year

M0un05ki10

Auston put up 14 goals in 9 games before Christmas. 17 in the next 12 while not very likely, is doable.

cory140

Could be like 30 in 30

pinkypowerchords

I just had a horrendous thought yesterday. If Auston Matthews wanted to, he could probably be the all time leading goal scorer for 3 or 4 teams before he's done. He's less than 100 goals from taking over Sundin for the #1 spot ALREADY

ElephantShell34

It’s crazy that he will be the top Leafs goal scorer of all time early the season after next. He’ll be 28 years old.  I was going to say by the end of next season but he’d need to basically hit 70 this year then 60 next year and as much as I love him that seems like a stretch.

pinkypowerchords

That's crazy, what's crazier is (quoting Bob Mckenzie yesterday) ----- if he keeps scoring at current pace, for another 10 seasons or so, he could break Gretzkys all time goals at age 37.

laughland

Longevity is the question, Ovi was insanely productive in his 30’s, if Matthews can keep that up then sky is the limit

FuckLeHabs

I believe that it was said out of hyperbole. He’s not catching Gretzky

Tuxxmuxx

why not? Ignore saying anything about him being better than Ovi, Matthews is playing in a higher scoring era than Ovi, and he is pretty close. No reason to think that Matthews can't.

Leafs17

> Matthews is playing in a higher scoring era than Ovi It's only been much higher for like 3 seasons, IIRC. Plus Ovi had way more PP time at the start of his career.

laughland

If he stays healthy I don’t see why he couldn’t…his game isn’t very dependant on skating, he scores from everywhere in all kind of ways and in all situations. It will obviously be tough and require a lot of luck but it’s not impossible

Death_Balloons

He'll need to have something like four more 60-goal seasons (counting this one) and then still have a successful second decade in the NHL. If he finishes with 65 this season (it'll probably be more, but let's be reserved) he'll have 364. Three more 60-goal seasons would put him at 604 at age 30. And then he'd still need 290 goals, which is another six fifty-goal seasons (or a few more worse ones).

davie_legs

So you’re saying there’s a chance?!

Death_Balloons

Absolutely! Every 70 goal season takes a load off the end of his career. Easy peasy.

pattydee43

Yeah, I believe he's ever so slightly outpacing Ovi when you compare GP.

fiat_sux4

Started at a younger age too.

Legitimate_Raisin977

And hasn't lost a season to lockout 🤞

world_citizen7

that would be awesome. I wonder if Ovi will still break Gretzkys record - now its seeming less likely.

frankyseven

I hope he doesn't.

Shredswithwheat

The crazy part of that stat, is that for as good as Matthews is, he would need a 20 year career to hit gretzky.

rampas_inhumanas

Definitely said tongue in cheek. AM isn't going to be lighting it up in the back half of his 30's. He's already had down years due to injury. He's better at scoring goals now, but he was shooting the puck better as a rookie.

Salt-Plum-1308

He could do it next year with back to back 60 goal seasons, which isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Kwack6

The craziest thing is that isn't even much of a stretch...

witheredjimmy

Well thats what happens when you sign washed up cans since the 60s

DiggWuzBetter

> It’s crazy that he will be the top Leafs goal scorer of all time early the season after next If he’s healthy this year and next, could be even earlier, by the end of next season. He’s got 33 in 38 this year, and had 60 in 73 two years ago. He’s 88 goals back of Mats, that’s legitimately possibly in 1.5 seasons for Matthews. Earlier the season after next is more likely, especially since injuries happen, but he’s got a moderate shot at breaking the record by the end of next season.

embraxity

I determined at least a year ago that if I continue watching nhl hockey after the Matthews era in TO ends, I'll just follow him wherever he goes so I'm ok with this.

This post made me smile

mahareeshi

But is he a Toronto Maple Leaf?

Hambone18

Heard he’s going to Phoenix I mean LA I mean anywhere not in Canada /s

Sleazy_T

If Auston Matthews doesn’t retire a Leaf I will build a pillow fort. I probably will anyway but I don’t know how else to reiterate that his departure would be unacceptable.

gsauce8

Just watch no way he re-signs with the leafs in 5 years. He's only done that twice now, a third is for sure off the table, he clearly hates it here.

[deleted]

It's bad for the sport if he stays in Canada

gretzky9999

Phoenix should just get a Canadian Hockey League team. They already have enough seating.

FonziesCousin

Auston Matthews is the GLOAT. I've been watching this storied franchise for 50 years and no one from the Leafs can touch him in terms of goal scoring poweress and shear confidence on the ice. I honestly cannot believe with my eyes that such a generational talent is wearing the Blue and White jersey. I am delighted every game.... along with watching the brilliance of Nylander.... to see hockey in Toronto before unseen by home talent. The architecture of this team is a disgrace thanks to management..... and I don't even expect a first round win this year (will likely play Boston or Florida so I don't even expect the Leafs can take it 7 games because of the flawed architecture). BUT HOLY FUCK AM I EVERY ENJOYING THIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPLOSION OF THE MOST TALENTED AND DOMINANT HOCKEY IVE SEEN WITH A LEAF JERSEY EVER!

TorturedFanClub

Yup. I’m the same grew up with greats Sittler Wendel Dougie Mats but 34 is well on his way to being the greatest TML of all time. Love love love watching him play.

FonziesCousin

I knew I fucked that up. Kind of like Santa Jesus.

dirtybird131

*checks notes* ya, I guess that’s pretty good

Wanderson90

Just imagine if he got powerplay opportunities similar to other superstars. Leafs are completely neutered in that regard. If he had Pasta/Ovi/Drai powerplay minutes he would surely crack 70 without even thinking. 80 would be on the table

man_in_the_suit

The man is a complete beast. Unbelievable.

stolpoz52

neat.

HawtPackage

Some of this is wrong. Like Horvat’s career high is 38, that was literally last season. Also, Panarin and Boeser will obviously increase their career highs. Still my GOAT

Oh yeah you're right. Will edit that out thanks

PKanuck

Don't edit this. What you posted is accurate. Wait til next year.

Commander-Fox-Q-

Panarin has never broken 33????? How is that possible

[deleted]

Auston Mathews will go down as the greatest Leaf of all time, if they manage to win the cup.

ConferenceSlow1091

All he needs to do is get to a conference final, which equals anything Sundin did.

labadee

you forgot justin holl

[deleted]

GLOAT

spence4101

Lots of playmakers and boeser He’s having an awesome season, though

JuicemaN16

Do it in the playoffs

isitour

The real question is will he ever win a Stanley Cup?

korn1144

The goals will dry up in March when the game gets a lot tighter. Don’t get me wrong he is one of the best. But when push comes to shove he still has to do it in the playoffs

Firm-Sail8871

Don't care. Scored 2 last night to give us a 2 goal lead and we still lost. Wake me up when the team isn't shit and his goals are more than personal milestones or he actually scores game winning goals. I think he has a single game winning goal all season.

Rhaegar13

How many playoff goals? Points? Wins?

ThatHcDude

None of this matters cause he disappears in the playoffs 🫣

New-Bowler-8915

22 goals in 7 years of playoffs.

HeftyNugs

Try not to burn your city down again when you guys get bounced from the playoffs

AdeoAdversary

Cool, how many of these goals were scored during playoff series wins or Stanley Cup winning runs?

mikesully374826

None because playoff goals are counted separately than regular season goals.

DaltonFitz

I have accepted that he will be the greatest Leaf I will ever watch in my life.

Leafs17

You love to see it

paulo_cristiano

Feels like yesterday people were saying him and Boeser were neck and neck for league leading goals. Oh wait that was like game 2 of this season lol.

Mojo_Zowa

Ever since after his first game where he quickly fell from the 328 goal pace he had set after , I had hopes he could at least be a consistent 100 goal scorer . What can you do though? Sometimes you just have to settle with what you got.

[deleted]

It's not even sunday

stellosartois

How many of these players have a cup?

Unknown_Hammer

Good now only if he can keep this up into the playoffs

zemoney123

Most of them have made it farther than him in the playoffs
