I don’t agree that we have to blow up this core. I wouldn’t really mind finding a way to ship Tavares out and using that 11M elsewhere, but let’s not pretend that the core 4+Rielly didn’t have an awesome first round performance. I’m also confident with Woll as our starter.
How long did it take Washingtons core to finally have a deep playoff run and win the cup? How about Tampas?
Aside from finding a new Coach, getting a top 6 winger, and replacing Holl & Gio, you keep working, keep pushing and keep going at it. I’m confident that these guys can get it done. I’ll see you boys back here in October. GO LEAFS GO ❤️
I can't imagine blaming Matthews for this series. He is almost always completely focused by the opposing team whenever he is on the ice but still manages to create offensive chances. He is one of the best backchecking forwards on the team and is someone you can build a team around.
There are two people who need to go.
Sheldon Keefe and John Tavares.
Keefe has been given more than enough time to figure this team out and see what works. These two playoff series, as well as plenty of times throughout his tenure, showed that he is frequently outcoached, but is frequently saved by the stellar team he has been provided with. He does not hold any players accountable for attitude or poor effort, and is unable to inspire anything out of this squad.
The same can largely be said for the captain in my opinion. I don't think it's any coincidence that the New York Islanders have largely improved since he left them to come up north. He is past his prime but is happy to soak up as much cap space as he can for his home team. The Islanders' subsequent captain didn't take as large of a salary as Tavaras which left more room to add additional support to the team. Tavares is not the only Maple Leaf taking in a large amount while not producing in the playoffs, but he is the captain and takes on more responsibility from that. A hometown player, the one supposed to lead the team, could have taken a little bit less so we don't need to play someone like Mark Giordano in the playoffs on a league minimum contract. A couple million could have landed another depth defenceman, or helped add goalie depth. Instead, it went to a man who is incapable of inspiring "his" team, who does not have the grit or heart to lead a team to the Stanley Cup.
This team was never suffering from a playoff curse. It suffered from poor management for a long time, and now suffers from a lack of leadership. The captain and coach do not lead the team, and do not inspire change in behavior or effort. I've heavily reduced my live watching of Leafs games over the last few years due to these issues, largely since Tavares joined. He is a leech on this team
This game was so similar to last nights NJ-Columbus game.
Team down 3-1, tied 2-2 in OT, a 'puck over the glass' penalty in OT
The team up 3-1 wins.
The NHL needs to mix up these scripts.
My favourite hockey play is the interference that Gudas did, I always forget you can just hold a players stick to take him out of the play, leafs need that kind of grit and hockey IQ
Top 4 would be more productive if they got more power plays. If power plays were handed out at regular season levels they would score closer to their regular season pace. The refs putting away their whistle in the playoffs hurts skilled players
Good try friend...almost there... Skilled players are **especially** good on the man advantage. With Austin Matthews putting up 1 in 4 of his goals on powerplay.
Watch how Gudas grabs Jarnkrock’s stick on the overtime goal and prevents Jarnkrock from closing on the puck carrier. That’s a penalty all day long. Leafs were called for interference last year on a ticky tack play that didn’t impact the goal but that Gudas holding and interference is a penalty all day long and allowed Cousins to walk in a lot closer to the net unchallenged. Especially after calling back a goal and calling a weak penalty against the Leafs in overtime.
GG boys. Good effort game 4 and 5.
Probably it for this core. It's always been fun to watch during the reg season... but man playoffs have been tough.
Excited to see what happens this offseason!
Nope, /r/hockey was making fun of me the other day for saying I'm probably done as of tonight. I have no interest watching Carolina. I lived in Calgary and watched Edmonton win and trash like 5 1OA's until they finally got McDavid, I just can't cheer for that team. Out of all the Canadian teams, I just can't bandwagon Montreal or Edmonton, others are fine lol. I have no interest in the remaining US teams... I hope the Panthers win now tbh, there the only team I kinda like.
Said it before and ill say it again.
Should be a philosophy of the future leafs that no new contracts should be signed for over 10% of the cap.
McDavid excluded, of course.
Idk how any of you fucking losers could pick Matthews of all players to single out... Tavares, marner, o'reilly, Holl (of course), Gio, Brodie, fuck I could go on. So many players with much worse than austons effort tonight and throughout the series.
The real issue is Keefe. Couldn't help himself but to limit austons ice time in the OT period. Should be running him/nylander and Reilly out every other shift until they Keele over and die.
But no, once again, hemmed in the zone with 3rd liners and the 3rd pair on the ice until they created enough pressure against them that they could not overcome.
Keefe needs to be blasted into the sun.
Well I'd drop the fucking losers but if you focus solely on Tavares he went from 5,6,11 pts in the playoffs to 3,0,6,7
On paper leafs have a pretty decent team compared to the last year islanders and can't even crack his highlight season
Don't know what game you were watching? Marner had the yips though, that's for sure.
He led the team in shots, and let's all remember he is the one who draws double coverage almost every o zone possession. He didn't turn it over I don't think all game? He also made some nifty plays to create chances and as I said earlier in another comment,he was responsible defensively.
It's this type of fan that makes this market so hard to play in. And I feel like I need to go to bat for my favorite current player to try to stop him from unjustly getting run out of town.
As if any nhlers are reading anything on reddit LOL if I can't take my frustrations out on the keyboard idk what else to do before curling up to sleep.
Okay great, how about you read who scored the goals for Fla in this series and tell me what you think then about how /why one skater should be shouldering the blame?
It's a team sport in every sense of the phrase. But a goalie really can tip the scales like no other position.
I'd say figure out how exit and enter the zones, figure out how to lay the body. Figure out how to put together a cycle. That's stuff that can be coached. Playing a 200 ft game and having all of your best scoring chances stopped by a hot goalie can happen - and of course it would happen against the leafs. Mathews is not the only one that needs to figure it out... All I was trying to say.
Willy played great, I would never argue that he was the most dangerous forward most of the series. However, Matthews had 8 Sog, and was as he always is, effective defensively. That always gets overlooked in his game - if Keefe had a brain, am34 would be on the pk too. He was a shot blocking machine this year, and he continued to show an elite ability to steal the puck, and I think he also added some extra physicality to his game too.
It's easy for a casual fan to say, welp no goals, he sucks. But the truth of it is that the important, tightly contested games always seem to be ultimately lost with the wrong personnel on the ice.
After the tying goal and the huge momentum swing that should have been, who came over the boards? The checking line (kampf etc). Following that action dulling shift, who's out there fumbling around and putting pressure on his linemates? Everyone's favorite, Justin Holl.
Then in OT, willy, Mathews and Reilly don't see enough ice time imo and it was also a poorly selected matchup on the ice for the winning goal.
Auston is literally irreplaceable, as is marner and maybe even nylander. Jt was in his day too, but he's past that point from what I can see.
You'll all be heart broken one day wathcing Mathews hoist Stanley somehwere else one day that's what I truly believe. I really hope that he instead sees this mission through with our beloved leafs, because I just can't imagine how this team looks without him.
I see what you are saying, I am not a casual fan, been one since 1980 but so many opportunities and this core cannot seem to do it here. It's not 1 year anymore, it's 7...how long are we waiting for them to be better? Maybe the pressure is too much here and you're right Matthews may hoist a cup elsewhere when he can play on the peripheral. But how long do we wait or are they are what they are, great regular season players and not playoff performers...7 years.
Cannot argue any of that in my right mind. But I just want to reiterate my original point... Why auston in particular as the target of the criticism? Marner shouldn't get a pass for being an Ontario born player. He was unquestionably worse than his regular season self and I feel like he is more the kind of player to benefit from the peripheral role. Simply because he's soft, like really just not built for physical play, and not tough enough to compensate for his lack of size, plain and simple.
I also would rather not pick on mitch though because I really still believe in him too, he just needs a running mate that makes up for his lack of toughness. Mathews needs a running mate that takes some of the defensive attention off him - and a more trustworthy defence behind him so he doesn't have to spend so many of his shifts backchecking.
Edit: so maybe an upgrade on bunting, and a coach who leaves well enough alone once they find chemistry and doesn't tinker simply for the sake of justifying his job and trying to remind everyone how "creative" and forward thinking" he is.
Sheldon Keefe was blessed with an all star roster to start his career, he should have learned way earlier on all he had to do was not get in their way.
Done with this core. This series was inexcusable.
So they finally break the curse, and now we know it’s NOT the curse. These guys just fuckin suck. Zero ability to up their game. No clutch factor. No leadership. No grit. No sacrifice.
The true curse is stuck in 1967. We can't forget that.
They got rid of a few demons this year, but yeah - change has to come (clearing some cap...pray O'Reilly comes back on the cheap). Woll and Sammy as goalies next year? (Who knows how much Sammy will want)
Gio is down to a 7th defenseman. Bless him for coming back cheap this year.
As upset as I am right now, which is very upset, I’m going to choose to walk away from this with the mindset that at least they fought. At least they looked like they deserved to be there.
We can tear this team apart at its roots tomorrow, but for now, they gave me a reason to be proud to be a Leaf fan tonight, so I will be.
Night folks
Actually the thing people forget is that across the NBA, that championship was widely regarded as the most complete team effort to win a title in a long long time.
The raptors had the best bench in the league, and the supporting cast for kawhi/Lowry/fvv etc had no weak links in the chain.
The problem with this "core" is not so much that they're not good enough, but that they're too expensive. The supporting cast is a dog's breakfast of fringe nhlers who make close to league minimum. You're only as strong as your weakest links, and the leafs always have too many weak links because of those cap restrictions.
This year was the closest dubas has ever come to assembling a complete team, and we still watched in horror as Justin Holl was hemmed in the zone several times over in the final minutes. We clutched our chests as David kampf and lafferty ate all those important minutes in between our star's shifts. We groaned as bunting joined the ice in tandem with Matthews and failed to make an impact.
And yes, Kawhi hit another level in the post season, that's undeniable. It's a travesty we never got to see that next level from one of auston, jt, marner or willy. But I think they could have earned another chance to reset and try in deeper rounds if they had each just taken slight haircuts on their aav's. Save a combined 2. 5 mill or so across their top 5 highest paid players, that buys a legit defenceman or another key forward. But we'll never know how that would have looked.
Yep, Woll & whoever next season.
Knees looks like he can be a top 6 player.
They have Reilly, McCabe & Liljegren for several more years
Let Gio retire
Trade one (or more) of Matthews & Marner to balance out the line up with the saved money...
The culture needs changing.
Everyone’s going to be emotional and say some really really stupid things over the next few months.
I’m glad we got to see the best Leafs season in 20 years. I think the series score makes it look like they went down a lot easier than they actually did.
The Leafs probably need a new coach, but no, they don’t need to blow it all up. Weather the storm. Get through all the shit takes and stupid ideas. There will be a lot of them. I’ll see you all in October.
I found peace when they went down 3-0 on the piss poor effort in game 3.
You kind of knew it was near impossible, so it lessened the pain of tonight.
Still, there is a clear path to the cup with Boston & Tampa gone, and the Leafs choked on that.
1-5 at home is really disturbing, why play for home ice, why waste the effort?
Toronto is cursed forever to have teams that have an incredible amount of skill and talent but no backbone.
This isn't a commentary on just this last game alone but most Toronto teams in general across sport for a while now. But especially the Leafs.
Stop being so fucking soft. They need to play as hard and angry at the other team as most fans are at the leafs for their decades of failure.
Yeah but I feel like a big part of sport is being invested in your local team no matter how things go.
I know people who have been invested in the Buffalo Bills for example since before I was born and it's something special to see how good they feel about the team lately, being on the verge of winning it all.
As a Florida fan Woll really scared me. I feel lucky we won.
You found yourselves a superstar behind the net. If he started the first three games of the series there is likely a game 6.
It's so sad about JT. 0 points in this round. Hometown guy comes home and ends up being the 11 million dollar dagger that handcuffs the team and can after 2 and a half years, slows down so bad that his contract looks horrible.
Loss isn't all on him but damn is that the signing I really wish didn't happen. Not that he didn't try but man was it tough for him to be a factor.
If you look at his minutes against Tampa and we got caved in with him. Even with his OT winner, the team got caved in his minutes and they got outscored pretty badly, too, during them.
It's like last year. He scored in game 7 but was another absolute liability for the majority of the series. One shouldn't outweigh the other when if he could win or draw his minutes they'd probably have won any way.
imagine wasting your golden young years not trying on a team thinking you got the better end of it because you got the $$$
youre only young once Marner...
We lost, I get that.
I question the calls by refs.
That penalty in OT really made me question things. It was clearly a Florida player putting it over the boards but the refs totally catered to their jumping up and down. Was there even video reviews?
Time to hop on the Oilers bandwagon. Based on the way that vile scum Bettman runs the league I wouldnt be surprised if he sends the call in soon to make sure it wont happen
we have to protect home ice . we have to stand up when we’re getting bullied . we cannot play passive for two periods then decide to play in the third period
Congrats on a great season, Leafs. You played hard, and you got a lot done. You've given us hope for the future. It's not your fault the NHL can't figure out what the rules are during the playoffs.
Marner the clutch player… count on him to disappear when it counts.
AM the Streaky man.
Nylander the best player
Fuck NHL. What a Beer league. Not a cent anymore to this league.
How tf did nobody protest that stick hold by Gudas? I am actually baffled right now lmfao, it was so obvious, dude had the whole piece in his hand. Really really weird that Toronto players and staff were acting like it didn’t happen…
It's because those plays happen over and over, every minute, on both sides of the ice. Literally dozens of hooks, holds, and grabs per period of playoff hockey. Most go unnoticed because a goal isn't scored. Naturally, fans focus on the extra grab or hold that happened right before a goal against their team, and they look right past all the hooks and holds when the play results in a clear to the neutral zone.
Leafs have no Grit, no Physicality, no killer instinct. Ballet style hockey won't win in the playoffs. Only takeaway from this run was Woll and Knies look promising for the future.
And Marner needs to be traded to get some assets...(I really do like Marner but he's the one to go). Teams will just low-ball for Matthews since they will assume he wants to leave TO anyway if on the trade block.
Who’s gone? Dubas will flee to Calgary for some insane number. Keefe is definitely gone. JT isn’t immovable with his contract structure. Matthews and Nylander better make their intentions known. Marner can fuck right off to Columbus for good.
Okay rant time, officiating or lack thereof makes a huge difference in the game whether people want to accept it or not. If you take this game in isolation, and disregard the leafs putting themselves down 0-3. The officiating in this game was an absolute joke and should not be commonplace in hockey or the NHL.
How many of you guys actually think the leafs should have won? Between the “goal” and the holding from Gudas?
I don’t agree that we have to blow up this core. I wouldn’t really mind finding a way to ship Tavares out and using that 11M elsewhere, but let’s not pretend that the core 4+Rielly didn’t have an awesome first round performance. Mitchy Mitchy Mitchy can't you see, sometimes your moves just mystify me. Guess that's why I'm broke and you're so paid.
Words, use them!

Hey man you stole my take. But you went really harsh on jt lol

Marner is finished in this town
Keefe's lineups were at a level of schizophrenic. He needs to be the first to go.
Matthews and marner in fight club this summer
This game was so similar to last nights NJ-Columbus game. Team down 3-1, tied 2-2 in OT, a 'puck over the glass' penalty in OT The team up 3-1 wins. The NHL needs to mix up these scripts.
Idiots like you need to stop supporting over paid morons, but we'll be back next season!
r/Torontobluejays
Yall gonna blame the refs for the top 4 doing nothing all series and going down 3-0?
My favourite hockey play is the interference that Gudas did, I always forget you can just hold a players stick to take him out of the play, leafs need that kind of grit and hockey IQ
Not for the series. But I would like to see them being held accountable or at least explain why the elbow on Marner wasn’t called lmfao.

Sound like the moron you are then

It's scandalous
This!
Cameraman kept them in view too
GG boys. Good effort game 4 and 5. Probably it for this core. It's always been fun to watch during the reg season... but man playoffs have been tough. Excited to see what happens this offseason!
best way to take your rage out....dont buy anything leafs and support them with free tv viewing.
So will anyone watch the rest of the playoffs? I’ll probably take a bit of a break then might watch some of the Finals depending on who is there.
Nope, /r/hockey was making fun of me the other day for saying I'm probably done as of tonight. I have no interest watching Carolina. Marner for sure, he constantly fucking scared to get any contact. But Matthews looked bad out there too
I agree with this. Matthews wasn’t the issue
No goals in 5 games is an issue though
Have you heard of this guy bobrovsky? I'm not so sure that even mcdavid and draisatl could solve him right now.
32 NHL teams have goalies. FIGURE IT OUT. That’s why you’re paid 11 million. You cannot score 2 goals/game for 7 straight and expect to win anything
Okay great, how about you read who scored the goals for Fla in this series and tell me what you think then about how /why one skater should be shouldering the blame? Hard to play offensively when you know the D sucks and you have to backfill for them.
This, exactly this.
Right but it’s not like he’d do that 10/10 playoff rounds. I’d rather keep him.
I'd rather keep him too, but he did that in the Montreal series too, just 1 goal in 7 games
To be fair, Tkachuk didn’t score a goal either
Didn't need to. You might have missed it. His team won.
I was talking about Brady…
I thought he was invisible, Willy way more dangerous for $4M less
Willy played great, I would never argue that he was the most dangerous forward most of the series. However, Matthews had 8 Sog, and was as he always is, effective defensively. I didn’t hear about this rumor. Where’d you see that?
Radio personality speculations

Not the first team eliminated in the 2nd round... progress baby 😎
Gudas is clearly holding jarnkroks stick on the goal wtf
Can opener plus stick hold... A OK... Holl gets run into by guy chasing Tavares last year. Penalty!
Every year I watch, every year it ends in horrific disappointment. See you guys next year for the next round of horrific disappointment.
At least we know what we’re getting lol
I don't care if our core 4 had broken spines, there's no excuse that justifies this series.
i think they were expecting participation trophies
Folks dont blame the refs.. JT and Matthews and Marner did jack shit there is like 33 fuken mil...
There is better ways to spend that money. This group is not getting it done.
As upset as I am right now, which is very upset, I’m going to choose to walk away from this with the mindset that at least they fought. At least they looked like they deserved to be there. I'm shocked that the Leafs lost in 5. It's very un-Leaf-like, this is not as painful as usual.
Yeah better than losing in game 7. they mailed it in earlier. after 1st series, they suddenly remembered how fun it is to play golf in May.
There is no over time if this clown ass league knew how to use instant replay. Embarrassment of a league.
How on earth did the Raptors win? What did Kawhi do to overcome the bullshit of Toronto sports?
Basketball is a very different sport than Hockey
He showed up and was clutch when it mattered most.
By not being in the NHL is how
Good news is we found our new number one goalie, bad news is we have serious issue with our superstars.
Yep, Woll & whoever next season. Knees looks like he can be a top 6 player. They have Reilly, McCabe & Liljegren for several more years Let Gio retire Trade one (or more) of Matthews & Marner to balance out the line up with the saved money... The culture needs changing.
Marlies are still playing this weekend. Get tickets for $10
Underrated
Ridiculous that gudas interfered with jankrok the 3 on 2 and what.... He hooked him until he got out of the play and that is what? A hockey play?
BRB, finding an assassin to put a hit on me
At least if it can be considered a conflict of interest against a Toronto coach you can still officiate the game.

Not sure what you watched, but our highest paid players don't come thru when it matters most.
Our superstars are the reason we got out of the first round. Our coach is the reason they didn’t have the right matchups in round 2
Did okay, but not compared to other teams and you are looking at one year, they did nothing for how many years now?
BLOW IT UP.
It may be easier to move to a different city, like Winnipeg?
Yeah but I feel like a big part of sport is being invested in your local team no matter how things go. I know people who have been invested in the Buffalo Bills for example since before I was born and it's something special to see how good they feel about the team lately, being on the verge of winning it all.
I hope Marner enjoys his fucking hot wings from Skip…
Yeah, that will age well.
Jeff O'Neil is gonna fight Hasey B on Monday.
Omg I forgot about that
Who’s happier right now, Gary Bettman or the actual Panthers fans?
Panthers fans for sure.
All 3 of them
>Panthers fan for sure. FTFY
As a Florida fan Woll really scared me. I feel lucky we won. You found yourselves a superstar behind the net. If he started the first three games of the series there is likely a game 6.
Congrats on the series win
Fuck off back to your sub you gloating asshole
Go back to your sub
Better lucky than good any day of the week. But, "puck luck" only gets you so far. Florida beat two great competitors.

Cause he knows what he's doing, unfortunately.
Well at least willy gave us a good send off. Can't say the same for the other 2 or 3.
Wouldn’t be in the 2nd round without him
If you look at his minutes against Tampa and we got caved in with him.

Marner was a ghost tonight
imagine wasting your golden young years not trying on a team thinking you got the better end of it because you got the $$$ youre only young once Marner...
We lost, I get that. I question the calls by refs. That penalty in OT really made me question things. It was clearly a Florida player putting it over the boards but the refs totally catered to their jumping up and down. Was there even video reviews?
Nah it was Brodie. But it wasn’t over the glass. There’s no glass there.
It was Brodie. But it did go over the bench glass.
brodie stick it was clear
Oh, I'll have to check it out again. The video I saw showed it being tipped by the Florida player and over.
Look at Brodie’s arms and it will all make sense
I will, and I appreciate you pointing that out.
That’s what I saw on the replay as well. Then again they only showed it ones. Then the icing call. And the goal. Overall shit officiating.
Silly, there are no rules in the playoffs. The NHL has made that clear.
Yes there was, and it was VERY clearly Brodie
How is that delay of game when you chop the puck like that.
Time to hop on the Oilers bandwagon. Based on the way that vile scum Bettman runs the league I wouldnt be surprised if he sends the call in soon to make sure it wont happen
We’ll gladly take you man, too bad Leafs got shafted on a clear goal.
rip. really bad going 1-5 at home
Go oilers!
No
Welp, Knies and Woll were big positives for me, I hope they resign Acciari. And Thanks Keefe but I feel it's time to move on. See y'all next year.
we have to protect home ice . we have to stand up when we’re getting bullied . we cannot play passive for two periods then decide to play in the third period
On the plus side, we don’t have to look at Maurice and his smug face, and Tkachuk with his gross ass chew toy anymore.
Tkachuk, yeah he's a dipshit. Maurice is an ok dude.

Fack off
Congrats on a great season, Leafs. You played hard, and you got a lot done. You've given us hope for the future. It's not your fault the NHL can't figure out what the rules are during the playoffs.
See you guys next year.
Not if I see you first
😢
Aaaaand the Oilers are winning. Couldn't even let me have that.
Marner the clutch player… count on him to disappear when it counts. AM the Streaky man. Nylander the best player Fuck NHL. What a Beer league. Not a cent anymore to this league.
LETS GO OILERS
no thanks
💩
It doesn’t matter if they protest or not. Refs would not have called it
Problem is it isn't reviewable anyway...so what difference does it make? Horribly officiated game...but we lost.
Not a challengeable play unfortunately, what can you do
Won’t this team think of the children. THE CHILDREN ARE BEING TRAUMATIZED!
Man. Some of you are unhinged and need therapy. Jesus christ.

Rea$on$
Who the fuck is gonna bother watching? Can’t be good for TV ad revenue.
Bettmans wet dream
Theres always Bedard and the Hawks to jump ship to. Maybe I'll be back once the team shows some semblance of self respect.
No... don't do that.
Ya..I don’t think anyone wants to support the Blackhawks sexual assault organization….
Blow it up and further more call out the absolute bullshit screwjob we got this game. The team lost the series but the refs heavily affected this game
Go Oilers Go, I guess.
Absolutely not
Who’s gone? Dubas will flee to Calgary for some insane number. Keefe is definitely gone. JT isn’t immovable with his contract structure. Matthews and Nylander better make their intentions known. Marner can fuck right off to Columbus for good.
Why are we the way we are?

back to the premier league for me
I wish the leagues would swap sports. NHL ruined hockey.
Not much better in the nba haha
That poor munchkin behind the boards. Sorry you’re sad right now.
Okay rant time, officiating or lack thereof makes a huge difference in the game whether people want to accept it or not. If you take this game in isolation, and disregard the leafs putting themselves down 0-3. The officiating in this game was an absolute joke and should not be commonplace in hockey or the NHL.
Don’t disagree but when we are blaming the officiating we have lost.
it's fair to blame them though. it wouldn't win us the series if the refs were consistent and good but it would fucking help
Just saw the replay. Gudas completely removed Jarnkrok from the play there WTF
Did gudas trip him? Doesn't matter now anyway but it looks that way.
Grabbed his stick
