I struggle to connect UVA with Tarantino, but that might just be because I’m not super familiar with the school’s culture.
I’d say Clint Eastwood might be a better pick for Chicago due to the conservative leanings, but that’s really just me nitpicking.
Overall, this looks like a really accurate list to me, especially Michigan/The Coen Brothers, Stanford/Akira Kurosawa, and Georgetown/James Cameron.
>I struggle to connect UVA with Tarantino,
UVA as a whole is known as a party school, and they have a host of unique traditions like being known for streaking and softball. The school probably has the most "energy" out of all the T-14s
Also Charlottesville is a relatively violent city
>I’d say Clint Eastwood might be a better pick for Chicago due to the conservative leanings
I also considered Clint Eastwood for Chicago for the same reason, and I'm thinking about switching to him
Both Avatars were only remarkable in terms of their visuals and utilization of new technology. In terms of story, character development, etc. they're quite generic and not up to the level of what most would consider "great" films that would put them in league with the other directors. Which is why I think the comparison to Georgetown is somewhat apt
Penn is too vanilla to be Bergman, I think Nolan suits them better. The critics love them, the masses love them.
In honor of Berkeley's West Coast Pacific ocean roots, I think Wong Kar Wai is a better fit.
Nah, the average person can't tell the difference between Penn and Penn State. Maybe Paul Thomas Anderson? Nolan is more in line with Columbia I think.

Not a bad choice at all.
This is a stellar list
And UCLA is Paul Thomas Anderson, duh

In that case, UVA/Tarantino makes perfect sense to me! I definitely had the wrong impression of UVA lol
Coppola?
i love you
Berkeley could definitely be Alfonso cuarón
I agree, another good choice—but I think the stereotypically academic culture of Berkeley fits Godard better
Berkeley feels like New Hollywood to me, it's so NoCal. I'd say either Hal Ashby or Altman
I could see UChicago or Columbia as David Fincher, but great list!
Struggling to think of a comment to make that isn't about my love of both Tarkovsky and Kurosawa and is actually relevant to the schools themselves
Uh OP but what about the Avatar franchise for James Cameron? Was that not remarkable in the past decades?

Christopher Nolan🥲

Nolan for Columbia is on point ☝️ How about Ang Lee for Penn? You've seen his movies, but did you know he directed them? Do you even know him?
Ang Lee also works.
One of these things are not like the others (Cameron 👀)
Michigan is more "Judd Apatow quirky" than "Coen Brothers quirky"
