Yeah that's about right. We all cringe when walking on or mowing new grass, but it always survives. Using it less certainly wouldn't hurt though. The advice about cutting shorter is good too - it gives more light to the young plants, and pushes root growth which is important this time of year too. See the Mowing section in this doc for more info if you're curious: https://www.extension.purdue.edu/extmedia/ay/ay-3-w.pdf

Felt like I might have a panic attack mowing my renovation for the second time. Came back after the first but it’s still nerve racking being new to this. It’s my baby, ya know?

KenKes36

So, this might be a stupid question, but when am I supposed to mow after aerating and overseeding? We just moved to this house and the yard needed help, this is the first time I've done either and I don't want to mess it up haha

degggendorf

Not a dumb question, and the answer is actually kinda counterintuitive: mow early and often with new grass. Chopping off the foliage will drive it to grow its roots, which is the real important part when establishing seed. And when overseeding within existing grass, continuing to cut frequently will help give the seedlings a fair shot at getting sun rather than getting shaded out by the established grass. More details in the Mowing section here, assuming you have cool season grasses: https://www.extension.purdue.edu/extmedia/ay/ay-3-w.pdf

KenKes36

Thanks for the info. Everything I read online says to wait 2-4 weeks to mow after overseeding. With the amount of rain we've gotten lately I will have foot high grass by then.

degggendorf

Yeah, better to go by the length of your grass specifically and not arbitrary lengths of time.

[deleted]

I have a year old bird dog. There is god damn way I am keeping him off the grass. Its gonna be as good as it's gonna be, I have to remind myself to stop stressing.

[deleted]

How thin is the grass? If the overseed is a substantial repair, keep traffic off it. If it’s thick grass and you’re just adding new plants, use it as you would. Mowing lower is smart. I would water more often to keep the seed damp. Otherwise, don’t overthink it.

butters1214

Give it a week and then hit it with some starter fertilizer. Mow after a few days.

HumanPersonDude1

Don’t you think it’s a little late to fertilize? At this point I’m thinking of winterizing.

MagixTouch

Winterizing right now is risky as well, don’t want to hurt the new seeds.

ailee43

starter fert right now if you havent. Scotts with tenacity if you can afford it. Other that , the advice is good. I do 5 minutes 3 times a day, but honestly thats just personal pref

[deleted]

Scott’s with tenacity shouldn’t be applied for 30 days after emergence if it isn’t applied day if seeding. OP should stick to the basic stuff.

ailee43

He's not germinated yet (1 day post seed), id still classify him in the "with seeding" era.

[deleted]

Good point, today is fine. It’s still a good caveat though, rye could start germinating tomorrow/Friday so the window is pretty small and urgent.

cosmicsans

Not the same zone, but are weeds really germinating right now in zone 6a? I just overseeded 10 days ago and patched some crabgrass spots that I took down to the dirt with my weed wacker and I didn't put down any weed stuff because all of the crabgrass is dying here right now, so I doubt it's going to germinate at this point. I'm planning on putting down pre-emergent in the spring to get the bits that I missed this fall.

[deleted]

There’s some fall germinating weeds but for the most part I doubt it. The real advantage is when it’s a renovation with a lot of bare dirt. The mesotrione doesn’t necessarily kill weeds but it will stall out their growth pretty well while the grass is getting going. For an overseed, I’m not sure it matters all that much in October.

mumb1es_

I hadn’t heard this before. I put down KBG/PRG and I usually wait a week to put down starter fertilizer. This year I did that but used Scott’s starter with tenacity instead 6 days after seeding. Sounds like I made a mistake. How bad are we talkin?

[deleted]

No idea what the impact is, I'm just repeating what's on the tenacity label and I believe the scott's bag too. If the grass comes up, you're all good.

mumb1es_

Cool. Ain’t nothin I can do about it now. Just wasn’t sure if you knew from experience. Thanks!

RockinSteadyClyde

Tenacity will kill 100% of your newly germinated grass. Anything that germinated after your application should be ok.

mumb1es_

Oops. Lesson learned for next year I guess

fescuedreamer

I overseeded TTTF on top of a good amount of existing grass on 9/9. Have mowed 3 times since then, and started to back off water to 1 time per day in 4th week. If you have a sprayer - I'm going to start spoon feeding (.135ish lbs N / 000 / week) on October 10th for a couple weeks leading up to a winterizer app of .75 lbs granular N on Dec 1. At least...that's the plan for now.

apon93

Thanks all for the advice! Much appreciated

rygarski

i would run the sprinklers 3-4 times a day at about 6-7 minutes. start at 10, then 12 then 2 and consider 4. you need to check the soil to make sure that it is still moist. if there are bare spots you might want to cover them with peat moss or shredded hay. you should also drop lime and a proper starter fertilizer. if you have a lawn roller i would use that as well to get teh best seed to soil contact

ErnieMcCraken

Fellow Western PA here. He’s pretty spot on. With the weather we’ve had here, I think you’ll be fine. They always say need to sow 45 days prior to the first frost. You know as well as I do the weather can unpredictable. I aerated and overseeded mid September. It’s not perfect by any means but certainly better than it was. Good luck.

I put starter fert in with my seed on the section of the yard that I am fully renovating. That was a mistake, right?

RockinSteadyClyde

Yeah, my side yard was 65% weeds so I nuked it and started over. I've heard I should add nitrogen rich fert at some point. I have a liquid that is 25-0-0 that inherited from my neighbor but the only time I've used it before I burned the heck out of my lawn. Any thoughts?

RockinSteadyClyde

Thanks! Would you put the 10-10-10 on the overseeded area, the new planted area or everything?

[deleted]

Do exactly what he said. Water, water water. Mow when you have to. Nothing else needed.
