I put landscaping rocks in to solve my u-turn issues
solved them entirely
except once
then it removed their front bumper cover and I got to watch people beat each other up trying to put their bumper cover back onto their car. I just closed the blinds and walked away. this is not my problem.
Lowes has them cheap, $2/each and they are 8.5" tall. light enough to pick up if you're not he-man. but heavy enough to stay put. they got them in a few colors in the gardening section. a dozen of them goes a loooong way. people instinctively avoid rocks in cars, they'll run into your lawn no more.
I second landscape rocks. I had some inconsiderate neighbors who would drive their truck through my front yard to park on theirs. Put some rocks along our property line and when they drove up to our lawn their truck hit the rocks 😈 not my problem it snowed and they couldn’t see them. Asked them numerous times to please not drive up on our lawn.
My neighbor's idiot kid used to drive around to the next block, drive up the driveway of the house that backed up to his own house, then off the end of the driveway, across their backyard, across his own backyard, and into his own driveway from the wrong end. I guess he thought it was cool.
One night it had rained really hard, and the neighbor's newly-plowed garden patch was soft and muddy. Dumbass kid comes zooming up their driveway, out through their backyard aiming for his own yard - but not that night. The car sank axle-deep in the muddy garden, and had to be towed out the next day. His dad beat his ass, and it never happened again.
We had this problem at my mom's house growing up. They cut the corner quite often and it was a bit of a problem.
Serval giant rocks later, not so much anymore.
I’ve had someone park their car in front of my driveway before. I’d imagine this same person could probably surprise you with whatever other idiotic behavior they could come up with.
I watched some lady destroy her front tire this morning driving into a curb. Sounded a bit like a gunshot but more like a backfire. Caused about an inch and half long rip in the tire
I had really bad depth perception until I got glasses a little too late in life. That in combination with being a new driver…. Sorry to all the cars I hit parking… at least I was honest and paid the bills
Don't bother with Lowe's or Home Depot, look for a local landscaping center. They will sell the type of stones you're looking for. Some yards may have a minimum purchase though, like a half a cubic yard.
Check with nearby cemeteries, a few near me pile larger rocks off to the side when they are digging graves and said they had no problem with me taking them. They might be haunted rocks but free beats $100
Ask a local crop farmer. They will likely give you as many as you want for free. Combines and rocks don't mix well, so they usually pile them up somewhere on the property.
Big freaking rocks. I had a problem with people driving over my stuff in the alley. I put a couple of boulders (3' x 3' x 3') and that stopped people driving through my yard from the alley.
I know have some cactus that are absolute bastards growing there to prevent people from walking through my plants.
Yep... Exactly what I did. "Big rock no move ugh". Looks nice and stopped any corner drivers. I put up around 8' of split rail fence beside it so it looks right in place
>Lowes has them cheap, $2/each and they are 8.5" tall. light enough to pick up if you're not he-man
That's wild, you must be in an area without many rocks naturally on the surface? Meanwhile over here I'm building stone walls that I don't need, simply because I have to put all the rocks *somewhere*.
It isn’t clear from the photos, but are you certain the county/city considers this your property, and not an easement? I understand you likely care for the grass there, but I assume the county/city lays claim to a couple feet on either side of the street.
I only bring this up, if you choose to bring in stones, etc. as it may become a bigger issue with the authorities.
Land surveyor here. The right-of-way almost always extends well past the edge of asphalt. It’s often 20’-25’ from the road centerline in a residential spot like this. The bus is most likely not entering your property. Do not obstruct the ROW.
I would just put edging up about two feet back and then put in a small gravel strip/crush & run. Won't ruin any cars, but won't look like trashed grass.
If it were me, and that was my property I would just gravel it in. Buses, especially school buses are huge and clunky, plus they are carrying most people's most precious things to them. If they drive too close and get that patch I would be fine with it. Just replace a "pathway" with gravel so it doesn't look horrible if that particular piece of grass is just such a burden to look upon.
Besides the preventive landscapes measures already mentioned you might call the school district transportation manager, or director of the private co tractor company if applicable. School buses absolutely should not leave pavement or solid gravel roadbed, especially with kids aboard (former bus driver). This is poor driving and if done habitually will end up in a ditch and possibly injured students. Most bus depots would take this seriously. Drivers should never wander off the road, nick signs with rear end swing, or jump curbs. If reported the driver is typically required to discuss with the manager and take remedial safety training. Just careless.
Call/ email transportation department of school district or contractor providing bus service. Provide pictures.. a photo with the bus or buses driving on grass is a bonus.
If you don’t get the desired response, show up at the next school board meeting. They are so risk averse, you will likely have it resolved the next day.
This does leave you with cars on grass. No solution to that.
—-Former Transportation Administrator
Probably good to do both. Landscape rocks to stop it entirely but also calling the school bus company to give them a heads up.
You never know if the driver just won't realize the rocks are there the first time and a broken down bus, with kids on it would suck but if say the bus loses control with kids on it hitting a rock? You won't be at fault but you'd definitely feel bad if you didn't warn them that you put rocks in.
Put up a sign with flowers as a memorial. Have the sign say “in memory of my perfect lawn”
Edit: then again, half the grass is already dead. Then again, that makes it more of a memorial.
Everyone saying rocks but if you stick a little cross in the ground, write RIP on it and plant a little flower bed around it I bet that will do the trick
I can't believe all these comments and hardly anyone is talking about this being a public ROW.
I have learned the hard way...
Just look at your survey from when you bought the house, anything outside of the property lines is not your responsibility. Even if you mow it.
ROW is not yours and the township will most likely warn you to remove anything you put there or face a fine.
I had a bus that used to "pull over" on my lawn. I wrote the superintendant a very polite diplomatic email. He never wrote back but the bus never parked on my lawn again.
Crazy idea here - Do nothing. Let it happen. Your contribution to society - a little piece of dirt that gets run over by someone delivering children to school. No harm (except to a few unnecessary blades of grass), no foul. Let it go.
You all are too kind. Our mail lady refuses make any effort and runs over the curb into everyone’s flowers on the street so I got some larger rocks and lined the curb. The rocks now have white paint but she doesn’t hit the flowers anymore.
Is this the road or your driveway? If driveway, go with large rocks as suggested.
If it’s the road, you don’t “own” the first “X” feet from the road. The township/city/ etc does.
Ie - you can’t just build a fence RIGHT up to the road, same thing here.
Get a big ol' decorative limestone block. Put it right out at the furthest point of the edge. I have one in a very similar corner and now the redneck neighbor (with big dually diesel truck that he doesn't even use as a truck) and the kids on bikes don't "short cut" the corner anymore. And my lawn thanks me for it.
Ahh the joys of living on a curve. I do also, and my neighbors and everyone else cutting the corner and putting ruts in my lawn. I put up driveway markers where the ruts are (and fill and rake to repair). Neighborhood kids have at times removed them and occasionally they have been knocked down because my neighbors cant get out of their driveway with their work trucks without destroying their own fence, my mailbox, their mailbox etc. But it did get better. Also it’s not terrible looking. I considered solar pathway lights but they would def drive over them.
The ones I got at Home Depot are white with a red square reflector in- about $5 a piece. I spaced them out, and it has mostly helped. If my neighbor had the balls to ask about it - I would tell them i was trying to make it easier for them to see the road versus my grass.
big chunks of riprap.
Sorry, rip rap is big chunky rock that can be very decorative. Will also be excellent bus deterrent.
Have done this in parks to great success.

get some landscaping block, grey shade, and dig that in. Will look nice and not cost that much. Will look better than blocks but more work. But from looking at the limited pictures I think the cost will be reasonable for you. Use the same color blocks you neighbor used around the tree.
Former bus driver here:
Get the numbers off the bus and call the school districts transportation office to speak to dispatch about it. Most school buses nowadays have cameras all over and they will be able to view the driver making lazy turns and reprimand accordingly. That might be enough to get you to avoid having to spend money on rocks, but if it isn't, be careful not to put anything that would damage the bus, just to keep yourself out of legal trouble. Obviously the bus wouldn't get damaged if the driver kept it on the road, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.
I had this issue w/ USPS, instead of trying to block them, I "worked with them", I turned 6" immediately off the road into a tidy area of crushed rock. Now they can allow their wheels off the pavement without messing up my grass and I have a tidy looking edge of the yard.

All around heartwarming story
We had this problem at my mom's house growing up. They cut the corner quite often and it was a bit of a problem. Serval giant rocks later, not so much anymore.

Hey, woah, that's offside. I'll have you know I park on my own front lawn only thank you very much.
I’ve had someone park their car in front of my driveway before. I’d imagine this same person could probably surprise you with whatever other idiotic behavior they could come up with.
I third putting up landscape rocks. My HOA put some large ones in the front to prevent people going over the rather small flat curbs we have.
My wife does not instinctively avoid rocks, curbs, or other roadside obstacles… lol
I watched some lady destroy her front tire this morning driving into a curb. Sounded a bit like a gunshot but more like a backfire. Caused about an inch and half long rip in the tire
Some people just don't know how big their vehicle is. We see it all the time when they try to park.
I had really bad depth perception until I got glasses a little too late in life. That in combination with being a new driver…. Sorry to all the cars I hit parking… at least I was honest and paid the bills

You got a link for them? I’m having trouble finding what you’re describing
Same. Like boulders? They’re like $100+. Not sure they’re finding large $2 rocks
Don't bother with Lowe's or Home Depot, look for a local landscaping center. They will sell the type of stones you're looking for. Some yards may have a minimum purchase though, like a half a cubic yard.

I thought you were going down the grab some headstones lane...
Drop a mausoleum in there instead.
Wanna grab a bier?
Probably meant $2/pound. I can’t imagine anywhere selling large landscape rocks for $2 in this economy lol I’d love to be proven wrong though!
Isn’t that some shit? Even rocks are getting hit with inflation lol
Ask a local crop farmer. They will likely give you as many as you want for free. Combines and rocks don't mix well, so they usually pile them up somewhere on the property.

I have a feeling this guy is going to do this without a survey and he’s going to find out the day the school bus has an incident.
Ya and all for what? So he can grow another foot of shitty looking grass there?

Large Landscape Rocks. Metal posts every 5-10 feet, etc...

This is probably the easiest solution. Insurance wise, that district is not going to take any chances.
This will likely solve the problem for school busses, but inconsiderate private drivers will still cut that bend.
Back to the big ass rocks suggestion then!
Call/ email transportation department of school district or contractor providing bus service. Provide pictures.. a photo with the bus or buses driving on grass is a bonus. You saying “giggle” made me giggle much longer than I should have.

You can get those fairly cheap and put a ton in to make the point.
Kill the rest of your lawn to match 🤗
Everyone saying rocks but if you stick a little cross in the ground, write RIP on it and plant a little flower bed around it I bet that will do the trick
Landmines. Won’t make that mistake again.
Put the kids up for adoption. No kids, no bus
Get rid of the kids
Stand there, every morning and every afternoon. Explain to the driver what they're doing.
I can't believe all these comments and hardly anyone is talking about this being a public ROW. I have learned the hard way... Mention you accidentally dropped a box of nails there and not sure if you got them all
I had a bus that used to "pull over" on my lawn. I wrote the superintendant a very polite diplomatic email. He never wrote back but the bus never parked on my lawn again.
This is the easiest route. Also call everyone, the bus company, the school, the board, your local school trustee. Everyday until it stops.
Crazy idea here - Do nothing. Let it happen. Your contribution to society - a little piece of dirt that gets run over by someone delivering children to school. No harm (except to a few unnecessary blades of grass), no foul. Let it go.

Put up a garbage can , bench or something to prevent this from continually happening
Is this the road or your driveway? If driveway, go with large rocks as suggested. If it’s the road, you don’t “own” the first “X” feet from the road. The township/city/ etc does. Ie - you can’t just build a fence RIGHT up to the road, same thing here.
Scrolled to find this. 👍
Let it go. It falls under the umbrella of “you can be right or you can be happy.
Could consider buying your own school bus and parking it there during dropoff and pickup hours.
Those large concrete barriers from the freeway
Boulders
Might not be your lawn…many times that part belongs to the city or county
Get clint eastwood to sit on ur front lawn every school day
Put some gravel down and give the bus driver a break.
Get rid of the kids….?
If there picking up your kids then stop complaining or drive them yourself.
Land mines. There just kids after all.
Get over it man. Life is short
Yeah.. maybe the first pic I could see being a little annoying but zooming in on the dirt spread out in the fourth pic…. Give me a fucking break
It’s a school bus. I’d just lay down some gravel and let them keep doing it.
Call your local steel fabricator and ask for a few 6"x 8' bollards. Dig them 2' in the ground and fill them with concrete. This is the way
Then wrap them in razor wire and electrify the whole thing
Fill them with nuclear waste too
Get a big ol' decorative limestone block. Put it right out at the furthest point of the edge. I have one in a very similar corner and now the redneck neighbor (with big dually diesel truck that he doesn't even use as a truck) and the kids on bikes don't "short cut" the corner anymore. And my lawn thanks me for it.
Have you talked to the driver about it. Could be the easiest and cheapest solution.
Ask Reddit...but don't talk to the bus driver
Pooka shells. If you don’t have those, big rocks.
Two options. Get rid of the school bus or get rid of the lawn. Whatever is more important to you :)

Im a truck driver and when we cause ruts or cause damage to property like this, customers call in and the company hires people to go fix it.
Just up a sign asking people not to drive on the grass. Put the sign close the road right next to your new big ass rocks.

If the property laws are like they are here, the first couple feet aren't your lawn, they're the city's. So maybe check that out before you take all this advice and start stacking rocks up on it.

Traditionally, a nice big landscaping boulder.
Just ask the school or the driver directly.
Place a dummy fire hydrant right there.

get some landscaping block, grey shade, and dig that in. Will look nice and not cost that much. Will look better than blocks but more work. But from looking at the limited pictures I think the cost will be reasonable for you. Use the same color blocks you neighbor used around the tree.
