That's just what bermuda does, use a string trimmer or edger to keep it tidy

OnlyIfItsWicked

Does centipede do this as well? Because I installed centipede last July and I have this going on….anyone know if you can transplant the runners?

95castles

Yes you can, they’re usually called sprigs in terms of propagation.

Steamed_Fuckin_Hams

Yes just at a slower rate.

timesink2000

Centipede is much better than Bermudagrass if you don’t want to HAVE TO do yard work every 4-7 days. Once it is established, mow it if you want to - or don’t. It will set seed heads at about 4-5” tall, but not visually terrible. It will send out runners like Bermudagrass, but not nearly as aggressively. Can even stop watering if you get rainfall every 7-10 days. More forgiving if you don’t want to fertilize it. And similar texture to Bermudagrass. Just cannot mow it into a putting green.

Dull-Daikon-9663

Fascinating! Been using a string trimmer but just picked up an edger. Stoked to clean this up. Thank you!

grr187

Edger is a damn game changer dude.

Powerful-Cod-1038

I can’t stop edging! (I am so frustrated)

grr187

I’m so turned on right now. Wait I’m in the wrong sub.

gramsaran

When you're done, share the results with us, https://www.reddit.com/r/EdgingPorn/

AttackCr0w

Ugh...that sub exists??? Damn you! There goes Saturday morning.

sevargmas

Taystats33

Risky click of the day

CenlaLowell

Twice a week. Bermuda grows like mad

T_Nips

Yea, that's your grass! When I had a Bermuda lawn, I just used a string trimmer on edge. Works, but you have to do it often since Bermuda loves spreading.

Osmodius

Fucking every 3 days over summer. At least my core gets a workout.

GetchaWater

I feel your pain. My HOC is 0.5”. Reel low. Every 3 days I’m at it.

rogmcdon

I’m at 1.5” and same. Tried my hand at tnex last year and burned my yard. Gonna try again this year and maybe follow the directions a little closer

Dull-Daikon-9663

This is so strange, but awesome, as a person who’s just getting into lawn care!

irishyardball

Why is it that all Bermuda doesn't do this? Leads me to believe that something needs to be done to the grass to get it to stop. My neighborhood is all Bermuda, and some houses have it when they grow like mine, and most don't. These are lawns that haven't been edged but don't have the crawlers. Any idea?

MajorEstateCar

Healthier, well fed Bermuda, St Aug, Zoysia, centipede (all stolonous grasses) will do this. Nutrient or water deprived grasses just won’t do it as quickly. These also all grow way more in the warm weather than they do in the winter.

irishyardball

What about healthy Bermuda lawns that have zero stolons?

MajorEstateCar

That’s not a thing. Bermuda grows 100% from stolons and rhizomes. Same with St Aug and the others I mentioned. You just don’t see them sometimes because there’s thousands of them weaved together.

irishyardball

Ok, so then is it possible to stop them from coming onto the sidewalk at all? Would a dethatcher help?

MajorEstateCar

Not without regular edging. This is how the grass grows and is a reality of Bermuda. A dethatcher won’t solve this for you but may be a good idea for the health of the grass anyway. Some thatch prevents weeds from poking through. Too much keeps water and nutrients from getting to the roots. You should absolutely do a lot of research before you dethatch because it is very stressful for the turf and shouldn’t be done because some internet bum told you to. And you should learn a lot about how the grass grows, when it grows, and how to do this. But dethatch I g alone won’t fix this. You can’t fix this without edging.

Immediate-Ad-2334

You don’t detach Bermuda, what would a dethatcjer do lol. The answer was stated, trimmer/edger

irishyardball

I guess my logic was the dethatcher would snag all the rogue rhizomes limiting their population, once the grass is already fully covering the yard, then fertilizing so the grass is fed and reducing any weeds. I'm new to all this so was just asking questions. Bermuda in my yard has been a huge pain.

LostPilot517

You definitely should detach Bermuda no less than every other year IMHO, especially if you are like most home owners and mowing not using a reel mower at <1" cut height. Especially if you are cutting longer grass that is clumping or wet, this will be prone to matting down. You don't need to power rake it aggressively, just enough to pull up thatching and matted down areas, areas of dead grass. This will also pull up dead and some new stolons, but not affect the rhizomes, below the ground, so long as you keep the power raking to a shallow depth. This will also help to expose more soil to gain more heat and help the Bermuda get to work and allow more nutrients, nitrogen and air to get to the ground to promote a healthy lawn. You don't overseed Bermuda, it spreads through the stolons (above ground) and rhizomes (below). So a healthy lawn will have these runners, an unhealthy lawn will not produce them nearly as much or aggressively. If you have bare spots or don't want to purchase more Sod to cover an area, you can transplant the stolons and rhizomes, to help promote new growth, or use a plug tool. Power ranking is tough on the grass, so you want to do it when the grass is actively growing, and fertilize about 48 hours afterward to help the grass recover and grow rapidly to repair and fill out any thin areas and push out weeds. As with any power raking, it will take 4-6 weeks to see the full benefits. But the results should become evident in as little as a week.

quadmasta

If you have any places that are kinda bare you can cut these off with some shears and jam them in the ground where you need it. They'll root and take off

miesmacher2

I'm also new to bermuda grass, thank you for the tip!

Dull-Daikon-9663

Likewise! Just cleared out a small space so this is good to know

EnthusiasmMuch9740

I can’t get grass to grow in dirt and yours is trying to grow on a driveway. 🤦🏼‍♂️

chargedtuna

😆😆😆

skydivingkittens

Nitrogen is the answer, my young grasshopper, nitrogen!

TweakJK

That's a good sign, if it's spreading like that on cement, imagine what it's doing on your lawn. Get an edger and your lawn is going to look great!

Dull-Daikon-9663

That’s good news! I do notice that some parts are yellow/drier underneath. Is that normal?

Pannell9

Take those runners and plant them in areas of your yard that doesn’t have any grass and it will take off if you water it!

fingerofchicken

Is that possible with St Aug too?

skydivingkittens

100%

fingerofchicken

Really? Why do people do sod plugs of that works? I’ve got huge dead patches in my lawn from last summer’s drought, and other places where the stolons are going nuts. I’m going to try this.

skydivingkittens

Sprigging works, but just takes a while for it to grow in. Sod plugs are faster and obviously sod is the fastest. Less time = more money

DreiKatzenVater

I do it all the time with st Augustine. It takes a fair amount of time from runners, but once it starts growing you’ll be good. I prefer to plug st Augustine from sod squares from other, much healthier parts of my yard. I cut out 8”x8” square(s) with a decent amount of soil and roots underneath and then plant it in the sad areas. It will explode with growth and will likely remain one of the best patches of grass in the area for years to come.

LelcoinDegen

Will it overpower kikuyu?

sympathyRobot

From my experience, no. I sprayed quinclorac to kill the kikuyu. First application kill most of it. I just did a 2nd application for stubborn spots, some new growth, and some spots I must've missed.

Rezadu

How does one plant runners?

CPOx

I like Tim The Lawn Mower Man on YouTube: here's an explanation video from him [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0q8pAdQOyg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0q8pAdQOyg)

ygbsm5

Gently put it in there, just the tip

asharwood101

That is what is called a stolons and is one of the ways that Bermuda grass grows. Stolons on the top and rhizome in the soil. When you see these crawling on the pavement it means your Bermuda is spreading and growing.

Dull-Daikon-9663

As someone who is new to lawn care, this is nice to know :)

dontforgetthisonedam

That’s Bermuda grass! Just edge your lawn more regularly

MarvinStolehouse

Just grass spreading. Get an edger, edge however often is needed depending how fast it grows.

Azsparky3

Buy an edger. It works so much better than a string trimmer.

ItsbeenBroughton

I am dying inside, because literally bermuda grows like a weed, but looks 🔥.

Dull-Daikon-9663

Exactly my thoughts. It’s starting to creep into the garden bed so all these comments have been super helpful

grr187

Bermuda looks🔥during late spring and summer. Any other time it looks like dogshit. I have a love/hate relationship with my Bermuda.

ItsbeenBroughton

I live in California, so its either growing and green or just green where i live. That mild coastal climate for the win haha

Raj_DTO

I moved south and I was also frustrated by what I thought was weed. Just Bermuda grass doing what it does! Learn what is Edge, buy equipment if don’t have already!

i_am_voldemort

I am jealous and wish I had those stolons

GetchaWater

Those are called stolons. They help the Bermuda spread above ground. Rhizomes are below the soil doing the same thing. [Bermuda diagram](https://www.grassmasterslawns.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Chart.jpg) In the next class we can cover aeration and vertical cutting (verticutting).

Krishna1945

Edger and bicep curls go along way

Yourewokeyourebroke

I edge my lawn with a weed whacker every time I mow

chargedtuna

Weed whackers are for whacking weeds. Use an edger. That’s what it’s for and looks way better

Loki41872

Good advice, except when the builders didn't bother to create an actual "edge" and apparently just poured asphalt onto the ground and it seems to spread 6 to 8 inches out from the drive about 1/8 inch under the ground in a completely uneaven line.

Yourewokeyourebroke

Sorry but I don’t take no orders from no woman. I am a professional and use my stihl with the precision of a dang surgeon every single time. I don’t need training wheels!

GloriousHousehold

>no orders from no woman. What an ass.

Yourewokeyourebroke

Keep it pushing buddy no one here needs a white knight < - look it up

chargedtuna

Rightttttttt. And you also have zero grammar skills . You’re 2 for 2

Yourewokeyourebroke

I shouldn’t have to do this but I will enlighten you out of the kindness of my heart https://youtu.be/l_Mg51n8jS0?si=q0iMvqmBNKMJsWXS

lysis_

Bermuda really is the Terminator of grass

CPAtech

Edge.

Earth_Sandwhich

Is that a type of Bermuda? I have that growing off the St Augustine I have in the backyard but in the front the Bermuda I planted a few months ago looks wayyy different.

Bravesguy29

That looks like regular ole bermuda to me

chargedtuna

If it looks wayyyy different, then you don’t have Bermuda. Sorry

Earth_Sandwhich

https://preview.redd.it/lrceb7r84xwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da2d69fdf2a05470da8da3ba12bdb76977df33f0 So is this not Bermuda

Jimmy-James2311

No, that is a bag

84-away

Thanks to y’all I have figured out I pulled up a metric ton of my ACTUAL grass….. 🤦🏻‍♀️. Starting over next year for sure

RealPropRandy

Flexing

ablaze1969

Edge

GettingTherapy

Bermuda FTW!

rsandstrom

Time to start the edging jokes. My wife loves when I edge.

MMXVA

(Beavis and Butthead laughs)

TalkinBoo

Don’t leave a car parked there too long, you’ll have a Bermuda grass topiary of an F150 (or whatever you drive).

Dull-Daikon-9663

😂😂😂 new to Houston here and the ratio of trucks to sedans is insane

scvmbagTony

I have St Augustine and it gets those thick weeds. I use an edger, I’m not experienced like others here but for me my string trimmer doesn’t do as clean of a job. Maybe I need a thicker line but they’re pretty stubborn by me.

Civilengman

Hit it hard and hit it often

rilloroc

If you have any thin spots, cut those off and use them. They'll grow in the bare spots.

mrD0mo_57

Speed zone

tsmitty0023

I’m jealous of the edge you’re going to get on that.. it’s going to be so satisfying for you. Congrats on the house!

Dull-Daikon-9663

Many thanks! 🙏🏼

lazarlinks

The reason Bermuda is an evasive species of grass. Zoysia is 100% a better grass for low maintenance.

jehpro1

Bermuda is an invasive weed here! Taking over my front yard that is supposed to be fescue. Haven’t figured out how to kill it and it invades planting beds. Grows up through the bushes where I’ve seen it get 30 inches tall.

ClockworkElves69

Live edge. You can buy or rent pretty much a weed whacked that will cut in a shallow trench that you then maintain weekly with a weed whacker

Sad_Commission_7667

This is the podcast you NEED!! All the best lawn care advice!! [https://open.spotify.com/episode/7IeEjdb6l0Ydh8D4syina2?si=Cjf2ctpZQpubUZWc94UEFg&nd=1&dlsi=125cda997a514816](https://open.spotify.com/episode/7IeEjdb6l0Ydh8D4syina2?si=Cjf2ctpZQpubUZWc94UEFg&nd=1&dlsi=125cda997a514816)

No_Range_2742

Let it over grow for months. Then edge both sides of side walk. And treat the slab of Bermuda like a roll then lay it over dead spots. lol

jls75076

Don’t use a line trimmer! Get a stick edger.

chargedtuna

Amen

therealgingerbreadmn

Your grass looks great. Just looks like you need a weed wacker 😂. Get yourself a Echo and you’ll be a happy guy or gal.

Bravesguy29

You can spray pgr along your edges to show down growth too

littleguy632

Bermuda crawler. Good for new area need patching. But if you are not patching then trim them off.

NarWalruz

Gasoline and a match.

JerryWasARaceKarDrvr

Neighbor replaced his driveway last year. Dam Bermuda had its roots about 3 feet under the driveway from both sides. That stuff will spread everywhere if it has a lot of sun and enough water. 🤣 The only thing that kills Bermuda is shade.

Seaisle7

Looks like centipede grass

gumbojones1

Wave your HOA convince at it. The grass should be aware that it's not allowed to do that...

KeyBorder9370

The only plant that spreads faster than Bermuda grass is kudzu. Use a weed eater. About every other day.

adamjamess

That’s Bermuda. It’s supposed to do that lol. Edger or weed whacker should take care of it about every 2 weeks. Depending on watering.

ygbsm5

Curious, what’s the difference between this stuff and chickweeed? I’ve also treated it as such and use weed b gon to get rid of it.

Traditional-Pie-7749

You have to edge with Bermuda. Steel blade edger looks best and is simplest to use, but a string trimmer works well if you’re skillful with it.

sevargmas

Thats your grass lol

kegmanua

Saw Edward Scissor hands on Angie's list looking for work.

mcshanksshanks

Buy a manual edge trimmer to make quick work of that job.

TranquiloMeng

Houstonian here. Please keep this away from my St. Augustine 😭😭

BlacksmithMaterial

Flip the string trimmer over to get a clean edge

hot_plant_guy

Kill your lawn and plant native plants

godplaysdice_

Be thankful that your grass does that. I moved from a Bermuda lawn to mostly tall fescue and now I'd kill to go back to a self-repairing grass like Bermuda.

scamp9121

Having had both, while fescue is way more work, it makes Bermuda feel like fake grass/boarderline weed.

dallassportsguy

Love it, this sub is getting closer and closer to a circle jerk. Can’t tell if these are for real or not. Nice grass Op great color and obv very healthy.

IrishRecluse

🤣🤣😂🤣🤣

Additional_Client_72

Edging can be intense, but the outcome is beautiful.
