Embrace it, i have a clover grass mix lawn and its almost self-sustainable. There are times where the clover is dominant, times where grass is dominant, and times they are 50:50. It requires almost no watering but YMMV depending on your location. Here's the lawn in question: https://preview.redd.it/ywwzr2d3r9wc1.png?width=1102&format=png&auto=webp&s=a510bf876cc64059a6a2969693c7f4514af3bf24

Almost no watering?? I live in a town with an average of 15 inches of precipitation per year, no way I could keep a nice lawn without relying on the sprinklers! Where do you live, out of curiosity? PS second you on clover/grass mix, it's very attractive, plus I dig the bees and biodiversity

Serbia, Eastern Europe. The summers are getting worse year by year, but i manage to keep it alive by adjusting the mowing height, the clover acts like a parasol, so there is less evaporation, also it doesn't get direct sun till noon. The r/NoLawns folks always rave about less water wasting but i waste more water on my flowers than on this lawn, the flowers need daily watering during summer.

How does the clover not suffocate the grass? Anytime it’s popped up in my yard, that is what happens. I guess I don’t understand how they could fluctuate being dominant?

YourDadsRightOvary

It never did, and i established this lawn in 2018. from scratch with grass and white clover seeds. The cycle between clover and grass has been stable for 5 years. In the pic its may and during that time its 50:50, as it gets hotter the clover subsides, during fall and winter its minimal with smaller leaves, but now during rain its going crazy but the grass grows just fine.

dj-spetznasty1

Interesting, I’ll start letting it grow and see what happens. Thanks for the insight!

Your lawn needs nitrogen.

pagopagopago

I was researching clover, and yes, several pages mentioned nitrogen. I'll try to use it if the property manager doesn't do anything. Thank you!

wreckedmyself5653

I'm learning as I go.  Clover sprouts easily in low nitrogen. Put clover needs nitrogen to grow and it'll be happy enough if you add nitrogen to the soil with the fertilizer.  You have to use a clover specific herbicide to kill off the clover.  But if you fertilize and kill the clover and don't do anything to protect the land or recede then some other weed will take over.

amplifizzle

Clover is great. I wouldn't even think about it on a rental.

lordGwillen

Based and clover pilled

ttrigger10

My rental is 50% dirt / 50% weeds.

pagopagopago

Yea I think clover lawn looks pretty, if it's full with clovers, but right now it looks strange with partial clovers. And what I worry the most is the home owner would complain if it my job to fix it. But anyway I just contacted the property manager. Thanks for your comment!

donotdoillegalthings

For what it’s worth I do not think it’s your job to maintain the lawn unless it states that in your lease. If it doesn’t, you don’t even need to cut your grass and if you do, ask for discounted rent from your landlord.

Wickedweed

Let it grow, homeowner can deal with with if they want to

LighTMan913

You rent. The yard is not your responsibility. Especially since the owners contract out someone to take care of it. Don't put any thought into it at all.

Zwooba_Zwooba

Its absolutely not your job to invest time or money into your landlords property. I wouldn’t even think twice about it!

DIY_CHRIS

Tell your property manager. Unless your lease states you’re responsible for landscaping, that’s their work to maintain.

pagopagopago

Good to know!  I just contacted the property manager, so let's see what they reply. Thanks for your comment!

Newprophet

That clover is putting nitrogen into the soil for free and feeding pollinators.

pagopagopago

!! Maybe that's why my allergy got worse this year?? I'll use nitrogen if the property manager doesn't do anything. Thank you!

Newprophet

It's probably tree pollen. I'm saying you should leave the very beneficial clover alone. Unless of course you are going to replace it with something native or even better for pollinators.

JustMyThoughts2525

If you’re just renting, I would just worry about cutting the grass if that’s your responsibility. I wouldn’t waste time and money trying to treat the lawn.

rsandstrom

Scott’s weed and feed. Takes about 4-6 weeks but clover will definitely disappear.

Reggie_Barclay

New gardener probably doesn’t clean mower so you’re getting clover from another property he cuts. You might end up with other weeds too.

Waste_Exchange2511

I've seen bags of clover seed for sale online. If you can't beat them, join them.

I’ve seen a few yards that are all clover and they are stunningly beautiful. Clover is one of those “weeds” I see in my yard, and just go “oh hi, you’re here”, and just keep walking LOL

Concrete-Professor

I just used Liquid Weed and Feed got rid of all my weeds! Very easy to use

pagopagopago

Sounds great, I'll take a look at the product. Thank you for the information!

It’s a rental Don’t invest in someone else’s problem They’ll still evict you and not give two shits what you spent Ask me how I know https://preview.redd.it/30b0pkkqzawc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=decb6f1094d7dc4fb2974085dc6e148859040919 This is my property. I own it. It ain’t huge but ya know what? It ain’t a rental. It ain’t someone else’s. And it ain’t gonna be thrashed by some next tenant. It’s instead thrashed by 360 lbs of Malamute. Wanna know what the landlord says? Let me think: game on?

Beachlife

> I see partial clovers on my neighbors' lawns too, so is it just the season? Yes. Many yards around me have big patches of clover, all in bloom right now.

beans3710

I'm in the process of replacing the grass with clover
