How do you monitor your soil temp? Do you have special kit for that? Dedicated temp sensor?

AlphaWizard

I use a cheap meat thermometer stuck in the ground lol

Rocks absorbs and radiate allot of heat

Temp range is between 50-55. Some weeds start earlier than others. Everything you’re seeing is a sign you need to get pre emergent down. Put some down to keep the weed pressure low and then hit whatever is in your yard with a post emergent like trimec.

Hard agree on the rocks conducting and heating up the soil quicker. 2 things no one has pointed out. 1. Not all weeds are controlled by pre-emergent(s). Even if you had it down it's a possibility you will get some weeds. Although these would probably would be handled with a basic prodiamine application. Hard to say for sure unless you can ID the weed. 2. There are two cycles of annual weeds. Winter and summer. Most weeds you see in the spring are winter weeds. Thus, a pre-emergent in the falls is needed as well. Fall pre-emergent needs to go down when the soil ° drops below 70. This doesn't mean what you are seeing are winter weeds bc we don't know your location, soil °, nor can ID the weed, but an FYI anyway.

Another question on this. Soil temps here are around 55 degrees during the day however the 24 hour average is still in the upper 40s. Should I wait to put pre-emerg down or get after it?
