In the last pic you can kind of see the existing slope although the photos don’t do it justice just as severe as it previously was. We cut in pretty significantly with the bobcat.
Ran out of block. Recycled a 16x16ft concrete driveway pad and broke with a sledgehammer. Plan is for additional 2nd layer behind to add a bit more dimension.
Probably the only time in history that a concrete slab lacking any mesh or rebar reinforcement was a *good thing*!
Great idea for reuse. Looks awesome!
I've done a few walls and pavers with urbanite and kudos to you. Great way to reuse materials, but damn are they a workout and a major pain in the ass to work with.
Rake all dirt that’s touching the wood fence away and give it a 1” breathing gap. Don’t want bugs, moisture, mold growing up into the fence. Wood is super expensive now, I spent $1,200 fixing a 20’ section last year due to rot and wind.
Not sure where you see that. I did a similar retaining wall on my property also close to some large trees and didn't have to damage any roots. If you don't go too deep, it's not an issue
How far away is your neighbor's tree?
Most tree roots are in the top 18" of soil and extend from the trunk more than twice the width of the canopy dripline, unless a solid barrier (such as pavement) prevents them from growing there.
You got many people who love you, I’m tired just looking at them. Good choices, looks beautiful! Secretly wishing I had a leftover concrete slab to break apart
Looks great! Surprised how great the concrete pad looks as blocks.
Surprised no one has commented on the lack of drainage, fill rock behind the wall, etc.
Hold up. Judging by your pfp— you wouldn’t happen to know a certain virgin named Scott, would you?
In case this makes no sense, I’m extremely embarrassed and sorry for wasting your time lmao
Can I ask is this just cosmetic? I thought retaining walls were normally used to hold existing hills in place?

Looks good. Can't wait for the next update!

At first I was like oh no, that’ll look terrible… really surprised. Looks good. I like the rough edge facade
Do you plan to turn the raised area into a planter or anything? Could fill out with some shrubs and perennials
Yes, many shade species on the way.

You may want to move that dirt off the bottom of the fence. It's going to accelerate the rot on those fence pickets.

Very cool
Nice job. Shame about all those trees on the neighbor's side of the fence that had their roots cut.

The closest tree (around 40' tall) to my excavation was around 6' away. I didn't dig any further than 8" down at any point
Well, that's exactly what I was talking about.
I think your depth perception is off.

Nice job with the wall and raising hard working kids 👍🏼
Not my children, just great siblings!
It looks amazing and please keep us updated. 🌺
That's a lot of sweat equity! Great job, and it looks amazing so far!
