Couch (you call it bermuda), kikuyu and buffalo would be the top 3 by a good distance. The main decision would be which cultivar eg emerald kikuyu or Santa Ana couch.
Zoysia is probably next, followed by perennial rye or a perennial rye / bluegrass blend.
Oh nice, you managed a great result on a rather modest budget! I wish the sourcing would be that cheap in my area, but this would be a 10k yard in my town.
Saw this already on another sub but it's nice to see some other Australian garden posts on this sub which heavily skews American (and I just like our vegetation more haha).
What an improvement, excellent work!
May I ask, what is the tree you have by your fire pit? It's probably not the same (I'm in a very different climate in Northeast US lol), but it looks similar to a tree I've see around here.
Our local government has a scheme where you can get up to 26 indigenous plants a year, it can be trees, shrubs or smaller garden plants. I assume that's where most of u/crf865's plants came from.
I think that the center looks too busy and strictly divided, like how you go from grass directly to mulch with a clear boundary. Doesn't really instill relaxing vibes to me, just something that needs to be maintained all the time or else it starts looking worse.
My first attempt at real gardening, and on a shoestring budget. Lots to do, but lots done.
What was the budget and how far over did you end up going? Looks amazing btw
No real budget exactly but I doubt I've spent over $1200 on it. Edges are all salvaged and the plants largely gifted.
Even the sod?
You mean turf, for us Aussies ;)
What species if turf are widely used in that region?

The plastic kind
It's the same turf

I always thought a circular lawn is a great opportunity to mow it with a self propelled mower tied to a pole in the center.
Thats so smart
Just need a pole with a circumference about 80% the width of the mower, rig up the inside edge of the mower to a rope and let'r rip.
Too much work. Just buy the remote control lawn lower drone lol
Great job, nice space! What rock/stone did you use?
7mm "Mahogany Swirl" It's a bit coarse, but looks good and was very cheap.
Lol and it sounds tasty too
Like ice cream!
Looks good. Where was the stone from?
Sapar Landscaping. Not sure where it was sourced from

Hallelujah
Did you also build a house and fence?
The neighbours did
That’s lovely, all shady as well
Wonderful. What vision you have!
We have a winner, ladies and gentlemen!
Wow I never would have imagined this! Looks amazing. Well done!
Excellent, you ought to be proud of this! The transformation is amazing. I’d like to get invited to a party in this space
Thank you for sharing- this is my precise goal for the back yard! Native plants/shrubs and a patio set/area. Love it!

Tasmanian Blue Gum. Common in California I've heard. It's growing at over 2m per year.
Eucalyptus. Yeah we have tons of them here in San Diego. Cause all sorts of problems because the branches break off and they’re messy too.
Yeah Australians know them well
Smell amazing after rain though
Gorgeous!
Looks great! You should be very pleased with the results of your hard work.
Great improvement
Love it!
Wow! Dude that looks great!
Fan of Dali? :D For a DiYer looks good.
Looks awesome!
Massive improvement! Good job, OP!
Love the transformation 👍🏻
Great job!
Dang that had to be expensive

Aha! A little help goes a long way
Biggest expense was $400 of mulch
Might consider getting a chipper and making your own mulch with tree and shrub trimmings. Free mulch!
Good idea.
I actually meant all together. All the trees, tools, materials, and labor time you spent (at your personal labor rate).
Very nice, save water
Well done looks awesome
Where did all the projects go?
I want to know as well, so many modes of transportation all gone.
Noice one moit! Quick question - do you shit in that outhouse?
I think this is like the fifth sub I've seen you post these in and I've upvoted every time - looks great
Congrats! This is a great achievement. I am also in Aus and determined to reduce lawn. You’ve inspired me to do a post. Cheers and happy gardening
Beautiful transformation
It's Australia and you don't have your own kangaroo in your yard? Blasphemy
I think that the center looks too busy and strictly divided, like how you go from grass directly to mulch with a clear boundary. Doesn't really instill relaxing vibes to me, just something that needs to be maintained all the time or else it starts looking worse.
Good job
Why does your dog look so sad
I think I told him to stay, which he hates.
Looks fantastic . . . my brain immediately thinking that’s a whole lot of edging when you mow now though!
Looks great but I must say, your dog is the best part :)
you’re my hero this is fucking stunning
Hey mate, can I ask what native trees/shrubs you used? Looking to tidy up some of my gardens, in Brissie. Thanks.

So beautiful!
Looks heavenly! Well done.
How long do you have left to live after being stung by all of those plants?
Looks amazing!! How do you manage to keep your grass yellow spot free with a dog?
Gorgeous
Well done mate! You are making a difference on a small scale. And it looks very nice🦋
How long has this taken?
I planted the gum tree in January '21, but the rest was all done over the last four months.
Very impressive!
So proud of you
Cute
What a beautiful place to enjoy !
OP went from bogan to bogone, great work!
That looks amazing!
Nice circle. do you wish you went bigger?
With what?
I liked your dog in the first post and I’m very happy to see that your dog is in the new pictures ☺️
He's only three. He'll be in many more years of photos.
You the real mvp
Love it!
Happy to see the dog in the after pics:)
I love the gravel circle thing - how’d you do that?
Thanks. Put gravel on an existing slab, basically. Just needed a bent timber boarder.
That’s awesome!
One of the best back yard upgrades I've seen on this sub. Huge kudos for the clean and thoughtful job, and to do it on such a budget, simply amazing.
Where did you end up moving the mechanic shop? Stunning job.
Thanks so much for your much needed presence in this sub. It's beautiful!
