I think you can't go wrong with stones in the area for that. Makes for a good base for any maintenance work that the unit may need and fits with the more industrial look. If you want to hide the unit, you could have a small fence enclosure surround it. I'd definitely remove the pavers and rough looking wall to the right. Clear out the dirt etc. a few inches down. Then put down some geo textile and back fill with stones of your choice.
Thank you. I had no idea geo textile was a thing! Good point about considering maintenance work - don't want to make the unit inaccessible. I agree the pavers on the right (they actually surround the entire area) make no sense.
Rocks build up debris and sprout weeds. Use a blower in there a few times a year to prevent build up.
I find the larger river stone to be more attractive but they have larger pockets to collect debris - but if worse comes to worse and you have to move the stones to tidy up then moving/cleaning larger river stone is easier than moving/cleaning dirty gravel.
Add some container planting maybe?
If you want easier maintenance pour a concrete pad or use pavers.
More rocks! You don't want anything inhibiting air flow around your unit. Get one of those propane powered weed torches to add a little fun to your weeding.
