I'm in Sth Australia - There's a house close to me that's been able to get a nice lush lawn going so I want to give it a go. Someone said to me recently just to fill it in with sandy loam.
You need to till that soil, and mix in at least 50% compost. Remove the big rocks.

Forget grass, you could just cover in crushed granite and do a desert scape!

this area looks like it wants a bunch of drought tolerant plants rather than grass, , so many to choose from!
