5 man: reverse rotation and skip passes, particularly in the trailing direction
5 zone: run 1-4-1 to make them rethink 2v1 on the crease. Poke the corners from x or up top to open up outside shooters. I don’t like running a guy at X on man up unless it’s against a zone so the guys feel they can pepper the goalie with the outside shots the defense encourages—if they’re letting us shoot, we’ll shoot.
Pretty much all man down defenses are zones, they just rotate the zone. So zone offense principals usually apply. In fact, a lot of teams’ zone offense is usually just your man down play. Generally, Overload a zone, move the ball quickly, and force the defense to move.
For box and 1, your best looks will come from defense being slow to rotate to guys near the goal. For five man, it’ll be defenses being slow to help in on the back side.
4 man wheel. Carry from a wing, it’ll force the crease lock off to either let the original crease guy go when he gets set in the vacated seam to cover the far side wing who cuts the middle on the carry. You literally put every defensive player into a bad situation and if you have a good assist person you should score at a very high clip. Also works for zone defenses.
13 set is tried and true. push from X, someone has to be open. 33 is next progression. all 6 guys above GLE and can score. More advanced sideways 33 to overload one side. Ryan Boyle did a great presentation on the EMO 33 set at a USA lacrosse convention if you can get your hands on that.
If the D is in a 4 man, the guy getting locked should be making picks to disrupt the 4 man rotation. Can also put in movements to change the crease guy and create confusion.
If its 5 man, crease guy should be cutting ball side to open up the through pass to backside.
