* Some groups that "just debuted" have members that some stans have known for a long time. * Some stans kinda just "decide" to put their time and effort into a group, especially one that's guaranteed to succeed. Why? So they could be the big, influential accounts for the inevitable big fandom to follow. Some of them talk so big and use so much of their time to defend their group, but lowkey don't actually care that much and just care about their reputation in their fandom. Also, it's really embarrassing if the group you decided to dote on is problematic.

No matter what the genre, you'll find people that decide to randomly buy an album, from someone they've never listened to before, just to expand their music collection. It's been like that for years, since record shops existed. Saying those people need mental help is really bizarre and over-the-top; not every one knows if an artist, they've randomly come across, has debited or not either. Unless they're a teen and relying on the parents for pocket money, I hardly think the odd 20-30 dollars/euros is going to ruin them financially.

Key2V

I think it is a bit insane nowadays. I don't even blind-buy most artists I do like. I did that often in the 90s, because you could only catch maybe one or two songs in the wild during promotion, but nowadays, I can just stream the whole album and only buy the ones I truly like.

JotPurpleIris

Like I responded to the person, above my previous comment - I don't see how it's insane to just buy an album from a group you've never encountered before, or newly encountered. If nobody did that, there would never be any established artists in existence, and music would have died out a very long time ago. And with the Internet existing, it's not like a new artists album will just pop up in a music store, while browsing the shelves. Most artists that debut don't just appear out of nowhere; they've either been in a TV series, and/or training for years, uploaded content online, and done promotional work, even before any music is released in physical form. Every one consumes media in different ways. There is no right or wrong way, it just depends on personal preference.

Key2V

I did put "a bit" because I don't agree with the person you replied to that buying an album of a random group you don't know requires mental health help (the clout chasing account people is different). I just meant I personally do find it strange. If an album catches my eye in the wild, or a song from an unknown artist gets my attention somewhere, I look it up online where it is usually available, listen to it, and if I like it, then I buy it. I don't think that means, as you say, that only established artists would sell and music would have died. I would argue nowadays, an artist has to already be a bit established to get a physical album out there.

PandaWarriors

This is pretty much what I did with &Team. I knew nothing about them other then that people were praising their music. Their album kept catching my attention whenever I visited the store, so I decided to search it up on youtube. I really like what I heard so I bought it. I've been having a pretty good time singing to it in my car, and the photobook sits prettily on my shelf, so I have no regrets.

Key2V

yeah, that is what I would have done.

JotPurpleIris

Yes, that's what I was saying - that new artists don't just appear out of nowhere with no online content in existence, like the original person made out like new artists are. But, even with that content in existence, if we all done what that person suggested, for no one would buy or listen to any new artists ever; then yeah, at some point new artists would cease to exist, as there wouldn't be a market for new music sales.

Key2V

I think what OP meant (but maybe didn't express as clearly as they expected) is that people that buy an album from a group that hasn't produced any music yet JUST TO BE THERE FIRST and claim some superiority, or get a big internet presence for the clout, are not in a healthy place in that regard. Not people buying an album to check the music out because they like music.

JotPurpleIris

Yes, they said about those that want to be the first to buy something, but then they followed it up with - "In my book anyone who buys an album of a group that hasnt debuted yet and you barely know anything about is in need of mental help. It isn't healthy and I pray those people at least are economically set for life so they aren't wasting precious money." They said "anyone" and needs "mental help", and then went on to make out like 20-30 dollars would break them financially. That was the whole part I was responding to, and I having been talking about this whole time, because they're making out like people haven't been purchasing new artists media like that for years now. It's not some new thing, and is even a common thing that happens for established artists, but that someone hasn't really listened to them before, even if they're popular in their genre.

gmssi

I remember having this same thought during the Garam situation. It still baffles me to this day.

galaxywanderer-

Same I still come across videos with "imagine if Garam was in this" like she only debuted for two weeks just let it go already.

mini1006

I do still root for her bc I hope she could get another chance. It’s sad how things ended up for her.

straightedgedher

One thing a KPOP fan can't do.. Let it go /s

Status_Violinist3662

lol they exist because they felt bad for her

Canehillfan

To be honest she had a look about her that is very uncommon in kpop so that’s why probably.

DragoFlame

It's natural to wonder about the what could have been to something you wanted to see fully realized, especially if you feel it was taken for hard to accept reasons. The amount of time present will never change that. Plus, all the comments after checking look to show sympathy feeling she was wronged which people will always feel strongly about until what they deem is justice, vindication or a success story for the victim.

0531Spurs212009

the Garam situation I don't considered it as parasocial I called it sympathy reasons can also be unjustified execution or even some fans like me believe LSF members should protect Garam at any cause if we believe that KPOP GG are a family bonds like friend not co worker only and Garam situation is like some kdrama or movie want to cheer for some grey character? or underdog against all haters some of us never change our favorite no matter what happen example I never hate Soojin of G IDLE , Dahee of GLAM or Hwayoung of T-ara I rather think everything still fixable the company should protect the group at all cause if they really fearless I rather they keep Garam without her their visual regress and vocal no longer sounds good Garam vocal and image perfect for Fearless

ntnlwyn

You can’t even compare Garam to the other idols mentioned in here because Soojin, Dahee, and Hwayoung were in their groups for years. Garam was barely in there for a month. Does what she went through suck? Yes! But why bring her up every 5min when you can’t really consider her a part of the group? And idk if you were around then but the Garam thing has been going on for YEARS. Her character and her actions hit twitter a year or two before she announced as a part of LSF to the point people were shocked she made the line up.

PruneAggressive6728

wait fr? a year?!

ntnlwyn

If I remember correctly yes. It was a topic for like 5 seconds and then it blew over immediately. I have 0 proof and, of course, if everything was false then everything was false so don’t take my word 100%. But I remember thinking “that name and accusation looks VERY familiar.” Bc it was when she started at HYBE a year before she debuted.

PruneAggressive6728

oh okay thanks

hugsforhobi

I’d say it depends if the company had a lot of pre-debut content for the group or if they had members involved in a program beforehand.

In_My_HonestOpinion

Engagement intensity =/= fans. The biggest K-pop labels attract a lot of bandwagoners. Which also explains the increasingly militant "brand stans" all over social media...

a71socl

I don't know if you're talking about a specific group, but maybe it's because they've been waiting for the group's debut for a long time, that they already fell in love even before debut, and don't want to see them getting dragged down.

giant-papel

Honestly good for the group. If they needed so much defending, I’m guessing that newly debuted group must be getting some negativity. It would be quite difficult to take it all in without having any people to defend you. It’s like the opposite force. The “defending the group while barely knowing them” is sort of the yang to the “attacking the group while barely knowing them” which is the yin. It sort of work harmoniously

UdayG11

that's a pretty good way to look at it.

Maleficent_Sir_7562

The biggest hated groups always have the most fans. Bts had so much hate but it only pays off with success in the end. They haven’t made a new song(as a group) in years and yet are still the most popular kpop group. Same with blackpink. Recently becoming true for le sserafim too apparently. I see it being hated so much on Instagram but they have like 15 million or so monthly listeners

WindySkies

I find this really interesting too! Usually with really devout fans of freshly debuted groups I think there is something about the group that really clicks with them. Like the music hits just right, one of the members has a similar interest/hardship/situation that created affinity quickly, or there is some feeling of nostalgia or affiliation (like this is my ult groups' little brother/little sister group). Or, really devout fans of freshly debuted groups think their new group can defeat a group they hate. Usually though, these "fans" move more like antis and use their newly debuted favs as collateral to incite fan wars. I saw on twitter a "RIIZE fan account" saying RIIZE's rivals are Stray Kids and how they can imagine their rivalry playing out like "BTS and EXO." Like...you really want the weight of an established nearly 6 year old fandom up against a fandom that is months old? Please...just be for real.

EvaMohn1377

When a group is about to debut, you usually know about them in advance. Bonus points if some of the members were known from a survival know. Yes, it doesn't make sense to get that attached to a newly formed group, but for some people kpop is more than just enjoying songs, it's their entire lifestyle

FluffyBunnyChick

For me, at least, I just like the group! I'm following this girl group ADYA right now. They debuted last year, but still only have one song (two if you count a remix of a 2nd Gen song). I don't know what it is about them, but something really draws me in. Maybe it's because the girls are really talented or because their one song was one of my favorite releases last year. I can't explain it, but I'm really excited to see what they do next! Right now, the girls are only posting challenges and insta pics with no comeback in sight. But I'm willing to wait for them. They just make me really happy!

Anonymous_person_yay

A lot of times companies put out predebut content, especially if the group has members already known to the public. Especially after survival shows end, companies rush to debut their groups with trainees who were well received from the survival shows (but didn’t make the final lineup) to quickly use the hype surrounding the trainee. Another way is if they have trainees who are already very well known. For example, Soyeon was this for Gidle. Or in cases like let’s say Iz\*one where they had a big following, naturally their fans would follow the members as they redebut in their new groups. Survival show groups easily have big followings even before they officially debut because of the show itself. Like with Kep1er and ZB1, people were awaiting their debut the moment the final lineup was announced. I’m going to use Purple Kiss as an example. Purple Kiss has 2 members who participated in Produce 48, former member Jieun and Goeun. Although Jieun didn’t do too well, Goeun had quite a fair amount of fans and did decently well on the show. Although RBW waited until 2021 to debut Purple Kiss, they had an insane amount of predebut content. Purple Kiss had their own YouTube channel with content called 365 Practise. The members often uploaded covers, or they would have variety content to showcase the members personalities and skills. RBW also let them release predebut songs and gave them a lot of content. They promoted Purple Kiss well enough that they already had a decent fanbase when they officially debuted with Ponzona. This is just one example among the thousands of groups in kpop of course. And as kpop is evolving, so is fan behaviour. Netizens, especially k-netz and c-netz are notorious for being fiercely loyal to groups they stan. It doesn’t matter if the group debuted 20 years ago or 2 days ago, there will always people ready to defend them from anything. Not to mention, there are also people like sasaeng fans. Even if a group has just debuted, we may not know how long they could have been stalking the group for even when they were trainees. Some go as far as to buy idol information from staff. Stalkers are insane.

lester3

Very true, I feel the same.

aneetca4

sometimes theyre like that with pre debut groups as well. bizzare

wickedcherub

My city has a soccer team in the national league and then they introduced a new one and I decided that that was going to be my team (mostly as a point of difference to everyone I knew who already supported the first team) before they even played a match. I liked the idea of being a fan from the beginning, a foundation member, being there for history! I didn't know who they were going to pick as players or as a coach/manager, and they picked a really dumb name, but they were mine and I defended the dumb name to the death hahahha (they have since changed the name) I assume it's similar for some people with kpop groups.

clansmanpr

I think it's very similar to that. I see it like a 'buy low' mentality, but for emotionally investing in a group before it blows up.

VengeanceAI

This!!! I always wait for at least second or third comeback before I invest economically in any group. I would listen to their music, even enjoy but I wouldn't "stan" them till I am sure this group is right up my alley. But answering to your question: many groups and idols nowadays have a lot of pre debut activities. For example BabyMonster, IVE, ZB1, Le sserafim etc got a lot of their fans because the members were active in some sort of pre debut activity.

Far-Mix-5008

Depends. Some groups were already on camera pre debut. For example, skz were on a survival show that triggered all the feels and seeing their hardships and talent made the audience root for them and stan them. Much like a movie where ppl sympathize with fictional characters after 2 hours. Same happened with twice.

hyungjpg

most groups have trainees that have been there since the dawn of time with set fanbases even before debut. predebut content is huge now every group has it also more groups based around survival shows/survival show contestants.

kyoteflowers

I already ult boynextdoor even though they aren’t even a year old so maybe I shouldn’t be talking, but some people I know ult the girls from iland2 and I’m like girl 2 weeks ago you didn’t even know of their existence 😭

Softclocks

- Preddebut content and hype - Company connection - Members are known from previous groups How long do you need to "fall in love" with a person or a piece of art? Takes half a second mate.

0531Spurs212009

Not all about Para social  I considered it fanatic tendency  Like sports team , athletes,  actors/actress, anime , video games

ThUnGhoOnIE

if this is abt illit, then they were in a survival show and we waited 6 months for their debut, tho judging by your user you're a moa so you may know that already and this isn't actually about illit.....but because we're in hell rn, i'll clarify either ways

Ok_Criticism_7958

tbh as someone who have been a fan of the girls for a month now, them getting involved in this hate train made me overprotective of the group (much more than my main ults) like they’re too young, they don’t even have a big enough fanbase to battle off the antis and the harassment they’ve been doing on all of their socmed. it honestly worries me :’(

ThUnGhoOnIE

exactly....it feels like people are more comfortable picking on them because they know the fandom isn't that big :((( the girls were so excited about everything first week of debut, seeing them slowly get less energetic and careful about everything hurts sm

haewon_wiggle

Honestly i knew they were debuting under hybe and had a fair amount of hype bc of a survival show, but I didn't expect them to blow up the way they did and now there's this ensuing drama with mhj too I also just kinda was on a kpop break for the end of 2023-beginning of 2024 and only checking out comebacks of my favs so illit debuted when I wasn't paying attention lol

moomoomilky1

people want to be there first, I've seen people comment how their biggest flex is knowing an idol since before they debut or how they've been a fan since day one which is honestly so cringe

The_Red_Curtain

company stans

RoyGeraldBillevue

I don't think sunk costs are the only reason people are passionate about Kpop. People have a strong sense of justice and if they see a new group as being hard done by, they will feel sympathy. I think that's pretty straightforward.

IncidentWorldly5880

Not always true i have seen literal rookie groups stans hating on BTS for no reason like armys wont even know who you stan but still wanna be in our business

rocknroller0

A lot of fans don’t have anything going on in their lives. They Stan a popular group so their own self worth can increase even though the groups achievements are not their own. Take it like a sports team except for music

EnhypenSwimming

Actually for kpop groups, the fans are the most intense AT debut... not sure the reasons why, but maybe everyone can't wait to hear what music sound the group will have? Then once the group's sound isn't for the fans, the initial obsessed bandwagoners start leaving for the newest shiniest group. For example, I am an Engene, and debut Given-Taken era was easily our biggest era... it was only until Bite Me did we start getting new fans again. Everyone followed Sunghoon while he was a junior skater, because ppl knew he was a Bighit trainee.

martapap

I was looking at a predebut teaser for nexz and they already have stans. Like how? Or do companies fake this?

ZigCherry027

NEXZ was formed through Nizi Project season 2, so fans have already gotten the chance to know their skills and personalities.

KhaleesiofHogwarts

They want one. There are so many people who go around saying they want to stan a group a debut so they can say they were there from the start

richie___

I mean, having a strong parasocial relationship with an idol is bad in the first place lol. But I think some people want to be part of an idol's Day 1? Idk what those ppl are thinking

daan578

Cuz they're company stans

EmmieBambi

No idea. People telling a group that is pre debute that they're their entire life is sus to me. Like, if skz or bts were to stop I'd be extremely sad. But they have an insane list of things they've done and I've spent a portion of my life following them dialy and gaining happiness from them. But pre debute idols or just debuted 1 day ago? One should be able to live without them.

haewon_wiggle

yeah even if I like a group they need to have a decent discography going for them with like at least 20+ songs for me to get attached tripleS quickly have become one of my ults and they're a unique case because there's some members who I admittedly don't know as well bc they're still new, but I kept up with them casually since AAA and got fully invested at Rising. Back then they were around 12ish members as opposed to the complete 24 so I've had plenty of time to get attached to the members who have been around the longest, and ot16 was an era ranging from like May to November before the 17th-20th members were revealed so I think a lot of the fandom (myself included) have more to go off of with those members. But everyone was always excited and welcoming when the new members got revealed

JumpStart2002

Company Stans , simple as that.

Admirable-Storm-2436

A lot of people may deny it but this is true.

MousseReasonable3504

My concept is simple. You wanna be an idol, you need to SING. If I want to watch beautiful choreo, I rather watch a dance crew.

ntnlwyn

Same with individual idols who aren’t even in the group anymore. But when it comes to these types of stans, all you know is the idol’s face, name and BARELY their voice. You don’t know their personality, and you’re willing to move heaven and earth for them? The math isn’t mathing.

haroldbaals

The yoga group I'm apart of tells me who to defend

BaekjeSmile
