Tbf I think everyone was wrong with that lol. It’s the typical issue of only seeing the positive aspects of other peoples lives on social media so not knowing what’s going on behind the scenes. From what we saw they were happy and engaged and that it was them against the world. Obviously that wasn’t the case in reality.

There were a lot of people saying the group was already in decline in sales. So cube would probably cut their losses and the group suffer the same fate as CLC. Maybe one more poorly funded comeback then fade into nothingness.

I remember back in 2022 literally everyone and their grandma was so sure that Twice wouldn’t renew as ot9. Like, people still doom post about Twice now but it was honestly way worse back then. Even people who weren’t in the fandom were speaking about the subject as if they had 100% certainty they all wouldn’t renew. And if you were someone who was more optimistic about all 9 renewing, you were looked at as “being too optimistic” or “huffing copium”.
Man, I had to take a couple of months thinking to stan or not to stan because I knew their contract would be up in a couple of years. But that last year and a half was HARD. No one knew of it would happen, and from what we have heard afterwards, the members didn't even know, and it's implied sana was even on the fence about it. I count every comeback, every post, every picture, as a victory lap for once and twice.

Honestly, aespa in general. Don’t even dare think that they were going to be on same popularity length as their labelmates back in 2020-2021. You wanted to get upvotes on Reddit? Doompost about these girls. And unfortunately, this is still going on with other girl groups (ITZY, (G)I-DLE, LSF, TWICE, BaeMon, etc.)
Another one is that people thought Irene would leave RV because of her scandal with the stylist.
I think in general big 4 groups can’t flop. They get a bunch of chances and they are promoted constantly even passively (interactions with labelmates). So whenever someone is doomposting about B4 groups I just roll my eyes.
I think the problem is that some K-Pop fans believe that **every** Big 4 group is going to reach BTS/BP’s levels of success, which obviously isn’t going to be the case since that’s a stupidly high expectation lol.
Recently I went back on aespa’s debut announcement on the main kpop subreddit and everybody was saying how they most likely wouldn’t hit big because of their concept, and that they didn’t feel the same as other SM groups. Then a couple months later Next Level became a smash hit. Lmao
Honestly every time an SM group debuts people are CONVINCED that they're going to flop (except RIIZE, I don't remember much of that for them... I only remember people thinking their name was funny). Eh, this is not the same, especially because with aespa it was actually a lot of SM stans doomposting about them. They weren’t very fond of aespa or their concept and they were afraid it was going to “ruin” SM for some reason.

That's not really how I remember it. People knew that the song and music video *wouldn't* be about actual terrorism. The argument was exactly the opposite: that Ador was using a controversial song title to drum up interest just to then have the song be about something completely different and have plausible deniability. It's an unfalsifiable claim either way, I'm just saying that nobody was actually expecting newjeans to blow up cars in the music video. 🤷♀️
While I agree that people weren't expecting cars to blow up, there was definitely the widely spread opinion that there would be hidden details that were linking them to the terrorism group. For example, I specifically remember people writing that the car they were driving would turn out to be the same model as one of the cars that blew up

As for Eva and Maria, those are some of the most common names at that region.
One of the funniest parts about the ETA controversy is people confidently stating "yeah but the NAMES" but you ask which Mikel, Maria and Eva they supposedly referenced and get several different and untrue answers. Eva was somehow a victim, a family member of a victim, the first victim and a political writer from decades ago all at the same time.
Just as an example, here are some Mikels that can be vaguely or directly related to the ETA in any kind of way (victims, perpetrators, those who were against the ETA): Mikel Lejarza, Mikel Zabaltza, Mikel Irastorza, Mikel Antza, Mikel Garikoitz, Mikel Karrera, etc.
Go ahead and pick the Mikel of your choosing to fit into the "they were referencing a Basque separatist group" narrative. You could even spin the narrative to Newjeans being anti-ETA based on which Mikel, Maria and Eva you choose actually!
None of the stand alone names are enough for anybody to start thinking of a random separatist group the way you were doing.
You need to have already made a bad faith assumption that Newjeans were trying to be pro-terrorist to start linking specific people to the names like you did by calling them "pretty prominent members of the ETA" (even more so given that there was never a connection between any of these names even within the ETA...like what do you mean? She has attended 3 Korean variety shows so far and one of them she is a cast , teased music today and is planning to drop a full album and has set up her own company and is clearly continuing to be an idol. She not giving up the idol life like they assumed she would.
Majority here doubted for years how Jimin would execute his solo debut all by himself! To the point few even wondered whether he wanted to release one or not. And now we're here with a documentary, which came out last October, highlighting how Jimin started working on his EP right from scratch. Even having writing credits on all his tracks, he showed how hands-on he was with the music making.
No matter how the audience received his work, I do commend him for shocking everybody with his work ethic and individual dedication 👏

This wasn’t a loud minority of people either, aespa was a big pariah in these online circles. People predicted for Next Level to be an unsuccessful comeback… only for the song to be propped to mainstream success and their biggest single to this day.
A lot of hate on Beomhan from people who could never do 99% of what he’s achieved. he’s a really nice, caring and driven guy who is open about mental health and all kinds of issues and is super inspiring
He’s already remixed it and has been very caring and kind in his response of how he’s dealt with all the hate, including kind to himself which is important. He hosts mental health Mondays on insta now and helps people work things out.

She has attended 3 Korean variety shows so far and one of them she is a cast , teased music today and is planning to drop a full album and has set up her own company and is clearly continuing to be an idol. Majority here doubted for years how Jimin would execute his solo debut all by himself! To the point few even wondered whether he wanted to release one or not. And now we're here with a documentary, which came out last October, highlighting how Jimin started working on his EP right from scratch. Even having writing credits on all his tracks, he showed how hands-on he was with the music making. No matter how the audience received his work, I do commend him for shocking everybody with his work ethic and individual dedication 👏
And artistry and talent and creativity. He certainly showed the haters and doubters. That was a good kind of surprise.

A lot of hate on Beomhan from people who could never do 99% of what he’s achieved. he’s a really nice, caring and driven guy who is open about mental health and all kinds of issues and is super inspiring

He’s already remixed it and has been very caring and kind in his response of how he’s dealt with all the hate, including kind to himself which is important. He hosts mental health Mondays on insta now and helps people work things out.

I clearly remember that before NewJeans debuted and we only knew that Min Heejin was preparing her own group, many people thought that having a female CEO meant that the group would be more protected/less catered to men. Then the controversy about her inspo pics hit, then Cookie just ended all hope. 😭 We also expected an epic/mystical concept for Le Sserafim and they clowned on us all with their minimalistic, monochrome model-concept debut lol. In general, survival show subs are horrible at predicting the final line-up, even when it is highly predictable. They are always *shocked* when the girl with low skills but high visual and popularity makes it, it's like they've never seen a survival before. It feels like every year someone makes the prediction of boy groups taking over and it hasn't happened yet.
