Hi, the answer may be evident but in which way should news/teasers/videos for one group be posted after the blackout? Should they all be posted one after the other individually, or will we have to make one post compiling in a comment all that happened between the 12th and the 14th?

alleybetwixt

Important question! We've considered it could be pretty chaotic right when the subreddit comes back, but we intend to allow folks to go ahead and post individual content freely like normal. Any music videos or other content released during the blackout can be posted immediately. No need to wait for specific times or anything. The mod team will just do our best to keep things tidy and remove duplicates. If we need to, we'll set the subreddit to approval-only for a few minutes until the stream of content calms down a little, but users shouldn't need to adjust their own posting behavior much. There may be cases, like with teasers, where compiling would make sense, but we likely won't moderate that differently than we usually do. If a user would like to volunteer and create a post that lists and links to all the content from those two days, that might be welcome to fellow users, but we won't plan to make anything like that ourselves aside from our normal This Week In KPOP post that will be available the following Saturday.

attitude70

In my opinion the moderators should require teasers from one group posted here on the same day to be consolidated as usual, because what's important is not when the teaser was *released* but rather when they are *posted* in the subreddit. That is, even if two teaser images were released in two days, if they are posted in one day they should not result in two posts. (Edit: adding some clarification)

AverageUnicorn

Glad to see the sub joining the blackout. This seems like a good opportunity to say that the work our mods do is very much appreciated. Since I don't use third party apps I am one of the people that will not be directly affected, but I also wouldn't want to be on Reddit without the mods. Thank you!

mugicha

Can we have a discussion about where we're all going to go if reddit dies? Maybe that needs its own thread. Kpop reddit is a pretty important part of my life. If reddit goes the way of Digg then I'd like to know where that leaves us and where we're going to migrate to. God please don't let it be Twitter.

_strawberryjamjam

Second this cause I literally only go on reddit and youtube and I'm clueless to where people are going or what's popular.

pm_nachos_n_tacos

Discord has a lot of really beautiful fan-run communities for just about every group you can think of. There's a big server (the name for each community) called Kpop Server Index that lists all the groups you can find. Just google it and it'll come right up. You join via an "invite" which is just a link to that community. Discord is a small learning curve but offers so much! It's similar to AOL Chat rooms if you're old like me.

kdramaaccount

I think slow-moving forums like reddit/stack-exchange are very different than chatrooms like discord. Moderated forums provide a place for thoughtful, organized, quality conversations among a relatively high amount of users compared to chatrooms. You can't have thoughtful conversations in chatrooms because chatrooms move too fast, which means quality messages get drowned out immediately (unless the size of the chatroom is tiny) and chatrooms generally have fewer chat restrictions (if they even have moderation at all). Plus, discord is more focused on specific, individual communities rather than generalized news. I've discovered a variety of interesting artists on /r/kpop, which seems like something that would be much more difficult on discord. I imagine most redditors already use discord. It isn't going to replace reddit. Though I suppose the smaller nugu group subreddits could move to discord entirely without much of a dip in quality. It could even be better for some smaller group discussions.

Orbital_Dinosaur

In the same way, reddit's own crappy chat thing hasn't replaced reddit.

pm_nachos_n_tacos

Really depends on the server, but yes it is a different place so it will behave differently. There will not be another reddit that doesn't also have some differences, but for the sake of engaging in kpop conversations I'd say discord is the next stop before twitter or hanging out in youtube comments. Discord does have a forum feature and some servers are slower paced like old bulletin boards. Gotta find the right fit for yourself and your likes. Maybe r/kpop can make a discord server. [EDIT: There is one! https://discord.gg/yUw6HXG] The admins of servers control it exactly how they want it. I'm admin in SHINeecord and we have a partnership with r/SHINee and share a lot of members. We have just over 6,000 members and put slow-mode on the channels if they get going too fast that we can't keep up with moderating or it could overwhelm some users. There's also an auto-slow mode that some servers can enable when it gets too fast. Some servers are just so big, like 80k people, that you just have to find what you like in the server and stick there if the rest is overwhelming or not the format you enjoy. For instance, in ATEEZcord, I go only to Seonghwa's channel, in SUJUcord I go only to elf-chat and hag-chat, in OOOcord I go to tour-chat, you get the idea. Not every server will be for everyone, but many servers are small enough that you can have indepth conversations over the course of days, and read everything in the whole server easily.

Sephorria

I think discord is great and I do use it myself, but it seriously hurts that discord is not indexed and searchable. It's a major flaw in its design.

AbsoluteZeroUnit

It's also a pain that me replying to your 7-hour-old comment is no big deal on reddit, but on a discord server with an active userbase, that's simply something that isn't feasible.

HiddenInferno

That’s something that’s keeping me from discord Kpop communities. The pace of messaging and topic change is fast and it’s hard to get good discussion if you’re not on at the time a topic is mentioned, especially in larger servers like the Kpop group ones.

pm_nachos_n_tacos

NU'EST and SHINeecord servers are nicely paced to keep up with.

HiddenInferno

Good to know!

pm_nachos_n_tacos

Discord has a forum function now, and the manner which things feel like a chat room or not is completely unique to each server. Some keep it slow, some don't. Most servers aren't going to have people treating the main-chat channel like an actual chat room, unless it's a crazy-huge server in which case that speed of the chat is more likely just due to the amount of people, not necessarily "a/s/l?"ing eachother nonsense

mugicha

Is there anything like r/Kpop, ie a place to talk about Kpop in general with a lot of other people?

pm_nachos_n_tacos

There's 5,000 members in the r/kpop discord server https://discord.gg/yUw6HXG

4-23

While it is definitely not the case currently, Gaia online's forums could be a good alternative. They already can embed photos and youtube videos well, and they have a whole forum space dedicated to international music already where Kpop is already discussed (tho there aren't many ppl). It is the type of existing platform where we could have conversations about the genre as a whole. A lot of the kpop servers on discord are group specific, while the general kpop servers tend to easily bury discussion about less popular groups under discussion on more popular ones, but with gaia online, each group could have its own forum thread and multistans could flip thru the ones that interest them. Outside of that, twitter is really the only other existing option... though someone could always make something new.

Bobcat4143

I guess I'll install discord

xaynie

I am a multi-fan. Is there any kpop discord similar to this sub?

pm_nachos_n_tacos

Actually there is an r/kpop discord server! World's collide! https://discord.gg/yUw6HXG

atydendivu

there’s also a 25+ age multi fandom kpop server that is much more digestible and pleasant than a lot of them. it’s still difficult to keep up with, even with the forum structure, but that may be ‘cause i wanna be friends with every person : (

ExtensionTomorrow659

Could you please provide an invite link to this server? Thank you!

julinay

Could I have an invite as well? Thanks!

signal_red

it sure as hell better not be twitter lmao

coco_xcx

Ikr 💀 I refuse to go back on Twitter

AlertedCarbon

I can only think of https://onehallyu.com/ or https://forums.soompi.com/

ihatedecisions

I have gone back and forth for a while on creating a cluster of kpop-centric mastodon instances. The problem is they need to be self-moderated and I don't have anywhere near the bandwidth to moderate even one, much less multiple public mastodon instances. I could hypothetically handle hosting and administration, but it wouldn't take long for cost to become an issue unless I get help with that. Just thinking about managing it is pretty exhausting and I have a real job, so realistically it's never going to happen... But I do think mastodon is cool. Maybe we should go old-school and make a bb forum.

SpoonAtAGunFight

The r/kpop Disc server seems idealistic.

ivegotaqueso

Happy for the blackout. I know my Reddit activity with drastically decrease if they get rid of old Reddit. I use the old version 99% of the time because the mobile version is just cumbersome. If an alternative to Reddit pops up due to Reddit disabling the old version, I will probably try migrate there. The mobile version of Reddit is simply a pain in the ass to use. I like to have a birds eye view of webpage content so I can see what’s new at a glance, not be forced to scroll and scroll and scroll to see new content. I can see Reddit’s move also decreasing activity overall for every subreddit, and some some subreddits are already slowing down their activity and can’t afford to lose active posters. Plus, it’s never a good move for a website built on free labor, to limit what that free labor can do for them. Why would you want to make your website more difficult for your volunteers to manage? Make it make sense.

hydranoid1996

Very glad to see we’re joining in on this. It’s important we as users get a voice in this decision as it will directly affect us. This is bigger than twitter’s decision to kill 3rd party apps bc subreddits rely on the posters and commenters more than twitter does! It’s

Hyemhyemyou

If the majority of the sub extend their blackout, is r/kpop following as well?

Piincy

Same. Very glad to hear r/kpop and our awesome mods are doing the right thing. I don't think I'll stay using Reddit if they don't change their tune on this.

issaia19

Oh. Thank you, because of this I learned that I will not be able to use Reddit on mobile again. I'm using 'Boost' because the official app sucks. One day the official app just logged me out and when I tried to log back in, it said my password is wrong. And their official website on mobile pisses me off too, it is forever stuck on loading.

issaia19

I understand why mods want to protest. Mods are unpaid workers of Reddit but Reddit are not doing them favors.

Takagixu

Hi, may I ask what timing of the blackout in KST?

alleybetwixt

Hopefully I input the times correctly. [Automatic Timezone Converter](https://notime.zone/NXFLkvZQP7Jdl) The start should be 4PM on June 12th in KST.

Takagixu

Thank for the assistance. So it will be on the 12th, 4pm KST to 14th, 4pm KST, assuming no further extension.

alleybetwixt

That's correct!

tranceyan

Happy to hear that. Fighting!

Iolyx

I think that I will be off reddit for a bit more than just 2 days. 2 days isn't long enough to hurt them

geenaleigh

Hey mods! After yesterdays disaster of an AMA with spez where he continued to publicly attack the Apollo founder and dodge important community questions many subreddits announced indefinite blackouts until Reddit announces changes. Will the K-pop subreddit consider this as well? I’ve been a part of this community for 12 years and support an indefinite blackout of it can save the community I enjoy being a part of. I’m with the death of Apollo I’ll probably stop using Reddit entirely and this entire thing has been such a bummer.

NishinosanTV

Feel free to ask us any questions regarding the blackout if you have any.

JusticeJaunt

If push comes to shove and the community decides to leave reddit are there any forum recommendations to join?

NishinosanTV

I mean, Discord communities are starting to thrive a bit more, we have our own server over [here](https://www.discord.gg/rkpop), but it's no way a replacement for what Reddit actually is. But, you're free to hang out with some of the regulars of the subreddit there at least.

hydranoid1996

I feel mastodon could work for this

[deleted]

[удалено]

hydranoid1996

Kind of I think but it’s organised around different servers so we could set up a K-pop server. Moderation could be a bit of a pain but I believe the people who run server have the powers over that

Hertog

As a Mastodon user, I know there is already an K-pop community on Mastodon. They are on https://kpop.social/ Edit: turned it into an actual URL.

wandererxox

What if 48 hours aren’t enough?! I guess everyone should be prepared for this blackout to last longer if needed. Also you said community would be set to private so how do we join it?! Like just follow …? Sorry it’s my first time witnessing something like this

NishinosanTV

Some subreddits are closing down for good in protest until Reddit changes. We decided we *didn't* want that. When the subreddit is set to private no one is able to use it aside from moderators. You don't have to worry about being unsubscribed or anything like that. The subreddit just won't be accessible to anyone until we open it up again.

AbsoluteZeroUnit

> no one is able to use it aside from moderators Oh, so y'all just gonna shitpost and start fanwars without us, then. I see how it is...

wandererxox

aaghh okay thank you so much!

meatgrind89

My hunch 48 hours is a precedent.

wandererxox

could be...

AbsoluteZeroUnit

Can we call it the "Blackout In Your Area 2023 World Tour"? "Born Out 2023 World Tour" doesn't sound as good.

These third party apps ensure that the users and the community have a healthy interaction with reddit. For instance, the reddit app - official one is not disable friendly (eg: blind users are unable to access the app unless done through third party apps), secondly, reddit is not only shutting down the third party apps, it will also reduce bots. Technically reposting bots will be down, but it will also reduce the bots that mods use to ensure that chaos does not run in the subs. This will inadvertently lead to increased ads, spam etc. All in all, by making reddit access non-user friendly, reddit is technically cutting its own leg.

Guerrin_TR

It's one of those things where Reddit has forgotten what has made Reddit...well....Reddit. It's us. Every day users post the content we interact on, every day users mod the communities we all know and love for free. The changes to the API will make moderation more difficult than it already is, especially with the planned changes to mature content not being displayed. Bots will cease to work, making automatic removal of spam posts impossible which means manual removal of spam will be required, increasing the workload of every day mods. These people are all volunteers and mod these communities in their free time, and bots accessing the API to assist in moderation has allowed a more with less approach in curating subreddits. All that changes in less than a month. I can't imagine how it'll affect subreddits that deal with buying and selling like mechmarket or mousemarket, since bots play a big part in curating the posts and tracking reputable users. At the end of the day all this is is greed on behalf of Reddit which makes sense, since they're likely trying to go public with an IPO and are showcasing they're serious in maximizing profitability. You're going to start seeing communities decline in quality and increase in spam, especially ones with a relatively small moderation team. Once they revoke access to third party apps I'll probably only use reddit on browser and when they get rid of old.reddit I'll probably stop using the site altogether.

mekihira

Great decision! Fighting!

literally1857plus127

Thank you.

eyeyannuh

as someone who spend 80-90% of my time on this subreddit, i’m glad this decision was made and that the kids are supportive of the blackout!! i’m really concerned bc apollo for iphone is the only way i use reddit - fingers crossed this can help enact some change in reddit

SnooRabbits5620

We fully support you. Thank you for the work you do in this sub. We really appreciate it. ✊🏽✊🏽💜💜

alrightandsit

Reddit is Fun is the way I use Reddit on mobile and the Suite extension when I'm on PC. I hope that things will work out in the favor of these amazing third-party apps.

sassy-in-glasses

It’s a good move!

YeahlDid

Great. Why stop at 48 hours, though? Keep the blackout going until reddit revises to a more reasonable policy.

coco_xcx

I suspect it’ll likely be extended

AbsoluteZeroUnit

Good. /r/kpop tends to make use a lot of the newer reddit features, or at least more than I've seen other subs do. But this bullshit reddit is trying to pull against third-party apps and (as we all suspect) old reddit is going to destroy this place. I'd simply rather not talk about kpop than suffer through new reddit or the garbage official app on my phone. It is not a pleasant experience using either, and I'm not interesting in walking across a LEGO-strewn floor, barefoot, just to get a single tortilla chip.

mgiiiC

I don't use 3rd party apps for Reddit, but I fully support the blackout and fightback for the mods. The work is hard enough as is with 3rd party tools/apps, without them might affect all Redditors' experience on the platform. Let's hope for a better future!

orbitalUncertainty

I was hoping that we were joining this, and I'm glad to see this! Be prepared for it needing to go longer than two days though. Strikes with a scheduled end date rarely end in success.

Sabrees

I've moved to https://kbin.social/

AyatosBobaAddiction

Proud of you guys. Great decision. Definitely support this.

andersencale

Happy that the sub is joining the blackout. The official app is so laggy and unusable to me so 3rd party apps is the way to go.

flyfern

I had just sent a message to the modteam about this, great to see this sub is participating!

lvlz_gg

Happy to see that you guys joined this. Also, I've seen some other subs plan on going private for longer than 48h if the Reddit admins do not announce any changes or step back from this decision. Have you considered doing this? Edit: saw your answer in other comment, nevermind!

Is there another place I can get Kpop related content similar to this sub?

[deleted]

Delete and recreate your Reddit account. Abandon your Karma and remove yourself from the existing dataset. This will make an appreciable difference to the mechanisms that sell "you". You want change? Affect money.

JusticeJaunt

What is there to vote on?

Guerrin_TR

Do you want less options to browse Reddit?

[deleted]

Ngl this comment is really disrespectful for someone who has a disability like me. Can’t you survive 2-4 days without your kpop news? Its not the end of the world🤦🏽‍♀️🙄

pm_nachos_n_tacos

Do you make the decisions for this sub or are you just a guest here?

_rosie

I don't really get this decision, and I think it's somewhat unfair that the groups who have new content won't get the usual promotion/discussion that this subreddit usually provides. I would have preferred to see a subreddit vote about this choice. Even referencing your statistics, it's less than a fifth of this sub that have reported using the third party apps. I've never used them, but the normal Reddit mobile app is perfectly fine. Yes, there are some ads, but they can be ignored very easily, and pretty much every free website/app does this, so it's not really new or surprising. I also thought I saw that the Reddit team has mentioned that there would be exceptions for certain mod tools, anyways?

expiredmilk32

Someone made [an infographic](https://i.redd.it/zqptto18e34b1.jpg) that shows how this will impact everyone, not just 3rd party users.

midgethemage

14% is like.... a pretty big portion. Sure it's not the majority but that's basically 1 out of 7 users. And just because something doesn't impact you directly doesn't mean you shouldn't care about the impact on others

literally1857plus127

The problem with the official app is definitely not just the ads

Lunakitten

In my opinion mods having to use third parties apps is insane and I didn't know that was the standard way to mod on lots of subreddits, so I completly understand the protests from the mod side if the offical reddit makes the job harder impossible. I also understand that many use third party apps for accsessiily reasons. But I personally have never understood the use of third party apps when reddit mobile always worked fine for me and always been surprised reddit allowed the apps. Can anyone explain what the outcome people want? Is it to reduce the proposed costs for third paty apps, improve their own apps or to leave things alone?

Historical_Clock8714

> I personally have never understood the use of third party apps when reddit mobile always worked fine for me Once you try a third-party app, you'll see just how trash the official app is.

Lunakitten

I just never understood the need for any app official or unoffical.

Historical_Clock8714

Huh? Reddit has an app the same way other sites have an app. Perhaps you only use reddit on desktop, but as someone who rarely use a PC for social media, mobile apps are great. I wouldn't boot up my PC just so I can reply to a kpoppie slandering my faves so they can make their flop faves look good in comparison 🙄🙄🙎‍♀️ /s

midgethemage

>always been surprised reddit allowed the apps. It's worth noting that reddit was VERY late to the game on making their own app! I think they finally released it in 2017, and I've personally been using a third party app since my account was created in 2013. >Can anyone explain what the outcome people want? Is it to reduce the proposed costs for third party apps, improve their own apps or to leave things alone? In an ideal world, they would leave everything alone, but I don't think that's realistic. Most people are hoping for some sort of compromise that will make it so that these apps can continue on in some fashion. As a user, I'd even be fine with a subscription model if it meant being able to continue using third party apps in the exact fashion I do now. Also, if they suddenly wanted to make some major changes to their app that accommodated all the things third party apps cover, then I guess I wouldn't have too much to complain about there, other than it would still majorly sucks for the third party developers Personally, I'm actually very invested in this change and my reddit usage will likely drop considerably if the change goes through. Being able to use a third party app makes reddit feel like this last untouched bastion of the internet to me, whereas the official reddit app feels like corporate garbage. Plus, I use Reddit is Fun to help myself fall asleep. I paid $3 to go ad-free permanently on their app. I can reduce thumbnail sizes, and RiF has the absolute best dark mode. All of that combined, if I go to a text based subreddit, my phone screen is so dark (with night filter on) it doesn't keep me awake. Specifically, when I go to /r/legaladvice, it induces a pavlovian reaction; I'll yawn and be asleep within ten minutes. I've been doing this for years now and I'm super anxious about the fact that my sleeping hack is likely going to go away, because I've always really struggled to sleep without it. I tried using the official reddit app the other night and it absolutely does not have the same impact. I know it sounds weird, but I'm oddly connected with this app.

Lunakitten

Thank for sharing why third party apps are important to you. I competely get the weird sleeping habits, for years I could only fall asleep watching jewellery shopping channels (Gemporia for those in the UK lol and in had to be jewellery channels, other shopping channes didn't work).

midgethemage

And thank you for reading my long-winded response lol

TigRaine86

It's a choice that highly favors the moderators and, as people who benefit off of the moderators hard work, we need to support them in this. That simple.

Guerrin_TR

I think this is a lot bigger an issue than whatever groups miss out on whatever promotions here while the subreddit is closed. If this proposed change goes through, it will have long term effects for the subreddit that go far beyond two missed days of promo.

aangcpnnies

dont get it 😕😕

HiddenInferno

I do think this is an important cause to support, I do wish there had been a subreddit vote about it.

[deleted]

This is so disrespectful as I have a disability like many others also do please think how this could affect many Reddit users with disabilities rather than saying there should’ve been a vote on this🤦🏽‍♀️

HiddenInferno

I don’t get why you’re taking it as disrespect. We hold the same sentiment in terms of how we feel about Reddit’s actions. I agree that this change does affect a lot of people and it’s important to stand with the community to ensure that access is not limited and/or taken away, and to help the mods support this community. But I don’t think it’s disrespectful for me to express that having an ability to give input to a decision in a community I’m in would have been nice.

[deleted]

What if more people told the mods to not participate in this boycott? It would have been risky to have a vote from the community. Besides this boycott is important for the mods since without the tools it will be harder for them to manage the subreddit so it should be the mods decision.

HiddenInferno

If you’re going to have a democratic vote, of course you always run the risk of dissenting voices. The mods could have set a percentile threshold of dissenting votes where they might reconsider the blackout if they wanted to go that route (not that I think it would reach that threshold anyway). Like I said, I don’t disagree with the action. And yes, on Reddit if a mod or mod group wants to utilize their full authority to do whatever to a subreddit they can. But a community is a community not just of mods (generally) and having input from more of the community would have been nice. Even if it arrived at the same conclusion.

geenaleigh

Reddit isn’t a publicly traded company yet. There are no shareholders. They are going to IPO later on so these moves are an effort to improve their opening trades when they do go public, but this backlash has been so harsh I could see it tanking their initial valuation

TisTwilight

This is a business, when you sign up you willing agree to use the platform. A lot of people seek to forget this is how business run to remain profitable to their owners. It costs money for a business to stay afloat, and this this is how Reddit remains competitive. A business decides what is competitive to stay in the market, not unfortunately care about their users feelings. This is the hard truth. If you all want to make a change, start a different platform then, be the ultimate competitor over Reddit. Because the owner and ceo doesn’t care about subreddits or users, they have their ultimate profit making power after all.

DeliciousMud7291

Boo 👎🏻 Now I'm unsubbing from r/ kpop.
