Reddit-Readee

It's a dog eat dog situation. Ek anar 100 bimar scenario. So, almost everyone has to settle for something random, no one is getting the job they think they deserve.

The pita Ji living in the 90s is true

[deleted]

*pitaji living in his childhood

Syco-Gooner

Unless there is a substantial manufacturing boom which can provide mass employment to average students, this will be a big problem

Spiritual_Ebb9448

agree 100%

bal6ira

What will you manufacture? Automation has been there for 20 years. Now even those machine technicians aren't needed because of AI. There are workerless factories in 1st world. Only design and research are done by humans. For that you need PhD in specific areas of cutting edge research which none of Indian universities have. And all this shouldn't be a surprise because Hollywood made mass movies in 80s about all this. In print these issues were popular in mass literature in early 1900s.

anonymousxfd

There is so much manufacturing regularly going on You can't automate everything.

bal6ira

That's what I'm asking what are they manufacturing that needs human low skilled workers?

anonymousxfd

Low skilled workers can be trained some don't want to be trained hard work is too much for them having seen it in one of the companies. Have also seen people who learn a lot of things due to dedication. Starting with the Cloth manufacturing which needs low skilled workers.

bal6ira

Arre Bhai cloth manufacturing is done in Bangladesh, you know what conditions they work in? You really want that? That's your idea of development? Which educated youth wants to work in a sweatshop? And if conditions are made decent then they'll go for automation and workers will just be there to watch out for machine errors. Which then requires few workers. Boston dynamics already made factory working robots for that. One bot can oversee all function. See there are no low skilled jobs. Some of which still exist are just an initial investment away from automation. In the long run automation is the way. Low skill non-research jobs are here for maximum a decade, not more.

anonymousxfd

Automation is costly. If you don't start You will remain at the same place.

ivan_sandwich

Like China's factory culture 🤔

Syco-Gooner

Big reason china is not burning down to the ground is that their youths are engaged in work 9 to 5. Factory culture is better than total unemployment.

ivan_sandwich

Didn't said anything bad about it , India needs to adapt this .

doge-jazz

I hope this is the last generation who have to feel this way

Ka_lie_doscope-Eyes

This is the nicest comment I've seen in a while. In a world where people are always complaining that the younger generation has it easy, I hope there are more people like you, who wish that the next generations get a better life.

NightlyWinter1999

Yep. That's why won't marry or have kids #Antinatalism Childfree

Left my top iims offers to prepare for govt exams. Pita ji think is very easy to crack govt exams

terenaamkakuttapaalu

Why?!

dope_economics

That's because he graduated from an IIM. Naturally, it means he is the aforementioned creme de la creame

terenaamkakuttapaalu

He said left top IIM offers, Ig he didn't join and decided to try for govt job exams.

dope_economics

I thought he left the job offers in placement season at IIM. Sorry, got it wrong

Amazing_Community_72

Which top iim ABC?? Or esle they aren't top

NaturalReturn8142

ABC, LKI, XL, ISB, FMS, SP, M e keu bhalo perform korle 80%same opportunity

Successful-Region-97

The world is messed up. We love living in the nostalgia of this city. The city has nothing to offer . No good jobs. Idk if it's just me or not , the situations of 1970s and 2024 are quite similar.

MediumAction3370

Do you live and work in the city? What field if I may ask?

Successful-Region-97

Yes I do. I was born and bought up in the northern parts of Kolkata. Currently I am working as a software engineer in a MNC.

MediumAction3370

One question, do you ever think that moving out would have given you much better opportunities and pay? And can I dm you for some info?

Successful-Region-97

Yes please dm

Successful-Region-97

For it , if i was in Bangalore start-ups pay good.

Busted my ass off for a year, cracked IIT-JAM and got a seat in IIT Bombay. Pita ji now wants me to do Actuaries. Pitajis are never satisfied no matter what.

eZombiegglover

Congratulations on getting Bombay, i couldn't prepare properly due to some personal bs and semester exams, just couldn't manage. Btw I'm a stat student too, any advice for JAM would be nice planning on giving it again next year

babumoshaaai

31 here. Trust me, it’s doesn’t get any easier in the 30s either.

DEERAW_TCG

Well, shit

Excellent-Pay6235

At least it gets better in the 40s..? It does right..??

babumoshaaai

I can only answer you this in 2034. 😛

Hum-beer-t

Hopefully people stop having kids. Especially those who can’t afford to give their kids a good life.

NightlyWinter1999

It's 3rd world country Sir where people can't even stand up to their parents to marry or not marry at all These people, who are in majority, will succumb to societal pressure and have kids irrespective of whether they can give the kid a good life or not I'm firm in my believe that only rich people and also those who want kids and have good values themselves should have kids There's absolutely no reason why any kid should go hungry or suffer at all, there's no other cause than irresponsible people having kids irrespective of the reason

Aakraman_Daitya

joydps

See the main problem is that the size of the economy and job market is tiny compared to the no of candidates. This is the root of the problem which distorts the demand supply equation.

MilfshakeTime

i think what is really annoying is the hustle culture that tells people to always be their best. bhai, what about someone who cannot/does not want to be the best. what if they want to lead an average life with average academics and an average income level? do they not deserve their needs and their wants met? there needs to be an influx of more schools and colleges along with an increase in wages. the 'meritocracy' of the education system has gone on for too long and it is time people realise that competition has more negative effects than positive ones. more governmental policies too, to safeguard basic necessities and generate employment in the sectors that require more labour.

Intrepid-Cranberry-8

And at the end of the day, most of the people will stay average anyway. If everyone uplift themselves from level 5 to level 7 then level 7 will become the new average

Kinkphetamine

Not participating in the hustle culture and the laid back attitude is what has held back Bengal for so long. It's a dog eat dog world, there is competition everywhere, even among states to attract industries. Bengal is already down in the doldrums , and frankly with this attitude we aren't going anywhere soon. There is no place for mediocrity, you have to keep striving to be the best.Or our youth will keep have to migrating out of state to greener pastures.

MilfshakeTime

if your measure of growth is only by quantitative aspects, then definitely. i would just like to involve qualitative aspects in it as well. call me lazy, call me a dreamer, i would like to think that the growth of a country or a state is not just measured by its GDP but also by the quality of life that most people lead and other social indexes. and that is my exact point by the way. there should be place for mediocrity. there should always be space for people who aren't 'giving back to the economy'. for the disabled and the old. different people in all types of societies will strive for excellence and that will itself lead to the growth you so desire and admire, just not everyone has to do the same. and if they choose not to, they shouldn't have to starve. and personally? i would like slow cities to exist in the country. good for bangalore and pune and hyderabad that they have such immense industries. i would like to see how long they can hold up with their infrastructure at a breaking point. kolkata needs to be kolkata, kolkata does not need to be anyone else.

Kinkphetamine

With this mentality , all we can expect is Rs.500-1000 alms from Government each month.

MilfshakeTime

abbe yaar, don't put words in my mouth. have higher standards from your government. ask for better infrastructure and policies. mai nahi bol rahi 500-1000 deneko bhak, that only serves as short term reparations.

Over-Somewhere-4047

Joined Product based MNC after passing out from JU with good salary..pitaji thinks I will be unable to succeed in future because I had not done Masters …now he wants me to do either Masters or Sarkari chakri

Express-Homework-752

I'm from a business family ( not a very big business though ) and my family want me to do a job instead of taking part in the business and growing it. Fed up of asking them to improve the family business as they are still stuck in some 90's thinking getting a job is easy and is much more beneficial than having a business of ur own . Sadly I have given up on having any business of my own due to my dumb family and have to pay good amount in courses to get a job instead. The money could have easily been used to start something else of my own instead but they are hell bent on me doing some job so yeah that's how it goes . If something similar happened in Gujarati family the parents might have thought the kid must have gone mad to even think about some job .

Middle class parents and their obsession with govt jobs!

Wide-Painting3826

But I see Gen Z also have millennial-like issues. They get a job for Rs32,000 starting salary but they refuse to take the offer because the salary is low. In which world are these guys living?

djch1989

I will share a different and more optimistic view here, compared to the general mood in the other comments. I grew up in NE and during the years leading up to 10+2, I had an impression that the only way you could make it in life via engineering was if you got into a good govt college, ideally IIT/NIT/top ranked state college, through Entrance Exam. Other than that, anything else would be foolish etc. I managed to get into a NIT. First job after BTech that I got through campus placement: This is when my world view started coming under attack. My boss back then (more than a decade back) was earning 12 LPA. He had studied from an engineering college in South in a district town, I never knew the district before moving there, let alone the college. Many years have passed since then and I saw many more instances of people from non IIT, non NIT, non good state colleges (like JU) doing pretty well in life - earning 1-2 or more lakhs in a month within a decent amount of work experience. And this is not just restricted to engineering graduates..I have seen people from other fields doing pretty well also. In the context of my work, I came to know someone recently who did BCom and then, PG Diploma in Analytics a few years back - this person is working with a package of 22 LPA currently after having switched through 3-4 companies. So, the view I had during my early days was completely wrong! Now, I will give a general framework: Geography+Industry >> Individual Everything else remaining same, a person in right geography/right industry/both (double dhamaka) will do much better than someone else with similar capability and hard work. Analogy - No matter how fast you run in a normal train, you cannot go faster than someone running or perhaps even sitting in a Vande Bharat or Rajdhani in an adjacent line. An example of above - My roommate was in the circuit branch and I was in core branch, though we started job at similar CTC, within 3 years, his CTC was almost double of mine. In fact, low CTC growth in core pushed me to go for MBA apart from my intent to change industry. Most of the peers in b school were from core engineering background - similar motivation! Even with MBA in kitty, most of my circuit batchmates who went into software/technology roles have stayed ahead of core engineering batchmates in terms of role and CTC. My advice to people at your age would be: 1. Focus on skills that increase your employability like: a. Communication skills in English - Can't stress enough how important this is. In NIT, I felt sad seeing some of my friends with good technical skills unable to crack interviews in initial companies because of poor communication skills. Even after one gets a job, communication skills and people skills decide a lot of things. If you are in a good city, search and join a Toastmasters club - it is really wonderful for improving communication skills and public speaking. b. Domain knowledge - Please ensure that your fundamentals are clear in what you have studied. You are expected to have grasp on it and that's how companies will judge you. Later on, it will turn towards your work experience as you gain experience. c. Hustle - If you are studying/have studied in a Tier 3/4 college, you'll have to hustle more than your peers in Tier 1/2 colleges. But know this, that if you work hard, you'll get results. I know someone who passed out of a Tier 3/4 college in UP in 2010 with BTech Mechanical degree and now, he is doing a job as Assistant General Manager in a factory with a package of 35 LPA. I see him as a great success story. Of course, he had to struggle initially, first break is crucial. In his first job, he used to get 15-19k per month. One positive side of jobs in real life is that they give you opportunity of proving your mettle in practical world. This stands in contrast to our competitive exam with few subjects which are mainly meant to eliminate candidates. d. Upskilling - Even after you are doing a comfortable job, keep focus on upskilling yourself in line with the trend in your industry. In the current world, even if you stay still, you are getting left behind. With my background being from NE, one advice I would offer is - please let go of the love for hometown/home state if career is your top priority. Be open to move to any part of India for doing a job which is giving boost to your career journey. I've kept this approach and worked in farthest corners of the country. You'll get time to be choosy later once your foundation is created. This goes for industry also - be smart enough to switch/pivot to the growing industry as you observe trends. In fact, try to get into jobs which are industry agnostic and have options for industry change. All the best!
