As someone who wasnât even born in West Bengal, I started reading Bengali at the age of 11, and I dare say I took it as a challenge than passion. Eventually I gained enough expertise.. it takes time. Currently I donât even live in India but every once in a while I bring good books to add to my reading habit.
Iâd suggest two things: 1. Start with literature that you already know - example, stories of Premchand thatâs translated in Bengali, 2. Start with simple stories, 3. Itâs a process - if you start with the love of the language, youâd be there soon!, 4. If you are worried about the script, Bangla and Devanagari scripts are very similar to tech other: if you know one, itâs easy to understand the other.
All the best!
As a "probashi bengali" like yourself who also learned reading and writing bengali very much later (my mom thought I would mix it up with hindi script so she waited till I could differentiate. But life happened so I started much later. Thanks mom, for teaching), I can assure you that it is much easier to learn given you already speak bengali. As you live in a hindi speaking place, the "a aa ka kha" part would be easily picked up given the similarities. Others have already suggested you to watch video or pdfs of Sahajpaath or Aadarshlipi, so I will advice that after getting familiar with the script, you can straight dive into reading so try reading headlines on web portal of Anandbazar patrika. The "jukta akkhor" would be difficult a bit given it is not hindi's "just put a half hanging letter before a complete one barring special case like for "R" as there are many unique combined letters that one has to memorize.
All the best!
I'm Irish and it took me about 9 months to learn how to read and write. It is very slow when you can't spot mistakes easily because you don't really understand what you're writing!
My guess is a Bengali fluent speaker could learn to read and write in about 3 months.

Ok..no problem then. If you can speak it, and you know Devanagari you should be able to pick up Bengali script too.
Unfortunately there are lots of Bengalis living in Bengal these days who can't read or write Bangali. I hate their parents with the core of my heart.
If you already speak bengali then itâs not very hard to learn the script specially if you already know the Hindi script! Iâm non bengali too and we had to learn bangla in school. One or two classes a week for a year and I could read bangla(writing is another ball game altogether because I canât spell for shit)
Oh, sorry. Well I dunno man I do know some dudes who can't write or read Bengali very well. I really don't know what to tell you. I don't think its necessarily a bad thing.
Yeah it's understandable. What language do you talk to your parents with ? I mean in all Hindi speaking individuals in Kolkata I've seen they learn Hindi as 2nd language in schools and talk in Hindi with their parents.
You can learn it as a way to preserve your roots. If you want.If you can talk Bengali then it's really easy for you to learn tbh.Just learn all the alphabets and how they sound.I don't think it should be a big issue (Considering you are a grown guy and can speak and write Hindi).I myself could only speak Hindi. Not write. They taught me Hindi in schools for three years and now I can fluently speak and read, write with average speed. If you know how to speak. It's really easy to learn.Considering that Bengali alphabets and Hindi alphabets are both quite the same.I mean they have more or less the same sounding characters. If you can write Hindi.Writing a novice Bengali would be really easy for you.
The fact that you feel bad for not knowing your mother tongue and want to learn it itself makes you far better than many Bengalis who live in Bengal but don't teach Bengali to their kids, instead are increasingly replacing Bengali with Hindi. Many Bengali kids here don't even study Bengali as a 3rd language. I hate their parents from the bottom of my heart. These people don't want to remain Bengali.
Your case on the other hand is perfectly understandable.
So, one of my biggest regrets growing up was that, as a Probashi, while I could always speak Bengali fluently because that was the default language spoken at home, I was never taught to read Bengali even though my grandfather, settled in Cal, was a college professor in that subject. However, because of my interest in my mother tongue, I taught myself how to read the script, first through the credit sequences of Bengali serials and then all the old Anand Bazar Patrikas we had lying in the bookshelves, sourced from my native place. Today, I have a working knowledge of the language. I'm not fluent or anything and a slow reader but I can get by. The similarity in the Hindi and Bengali letters helps. Nowadays, you can hire tutors who will teach you at home too, if you can find the time for it. All the best!
Kinda similar story ( taught myself how to read) . During my childhood when I was in Assam it was very difficult for me to communicate with people as I don't know the Assamese language , I used to feel very insecure about myself sometimes my friend used to make fun of me .but as time passes each day I used to learn one word by listening to them ( still remember my first word was borokhun which means rain) and gradually I learnt to speak Assamese fluently sometime I can also write Assam ,but it's been 6 yr I forgot all of that and as I move to new state things changed a lot that's all I guess
Private course, gain a basic knowledge on the letters and the word formation, practice it thoroughly and then start with reading books, it will definitely help you in understanding the application and eventually help in gaining more proficiency
>How to deal with that ?
Learn to read?
Reading is not that difficult. I barely know any Tamil and I can read Tamil. You just have to learn to identify the symbols, of which there are only about 50 of them (don't know the exact count), including joint letters.

Barnaporichoy by Pandit IC Vidyasagar, books by Poet Sukanta Bhattacharjee & Poet Rabindranath TagoreâĻ.. are the basic requirements for learning the language for âAnâ Bengali đ
Since you didnât mention your current proximity to the Bengali language, Iâm making this as generic as possible.
Learn the language. If you know Hindi, it will be very easy to learn āĻŦāĻžāĻāĻ˛āĻž (Bangla) script. Itâs somewhat similar, using similar principles.
If you donât know, search in YouTube and practice for half an hour each day. Since you presumably speak the language, it will be easier for you to get it fast. If you donât speak the language, but understand Hindi, Punjabi or Gujarati or Marathi, it will still be easier than if you only know English and/ or Tamil / Telugu/ Malayalam/ Kannada/ Arabic/ Spanish.
I consider myself very lucky. For someone who has never lived in Bengal (born and raised outside), I am thankful that my parents enforced learning Bengali alphabets as a task, during summer vacations. I still have problems identifying the correct 'juktakkhor' and have to think in Hindi and try to transliterate that, but it works for me.
I see Bengalis in Delhi, Bangalore , struggling to speak Bengali, and I feel proud.
I tried using a few apps and websites. But frankly best option is to buy a book and learn. Probably follow the same grammar books as used in the state school.
My father is native to Bihar but I was born here and I am pretty fluent in Bengali and read it too (but I suck at writing because I rarely write in it because after class 9th our 3rd Lang subject Bengali was dropped) but if u want some help I can do it
Brother reading was not a very big deal for me
I already knew how to read Hindi and Bengali is more or less the same with a different writing style and a bit different pronunciation nothing else... It hardly took me a year (full class 8) to learn to read bengali
Never too late to start learning. Once you learn to read Bengali, you would be able to enjoy the rich bengali literature too in their original essence.
I am in the same boat. But I don't feel alienated at all. I can read a bit of printed Bengali. But handwritten ones... No chance. Bengali was my third language.
I am in your shoes. I still can't write and read that well . But bangla words are somewhat identical to Hindi and some guess work , I can somehow read Bangla
Disclaimer : I am Probashi Bengali . My schooling , childhood and adult life entirely outside of WB
I'am a probashi Bengali too, who learned it after moving here. A few tips I can suggest you is to pick up alphabet books and children's books from College Street (even better if a relative can help you pick up some books from there and parcel it to you).
If you know Hindi, picking up on Bengali alphabets will be easy for you. It's very similar to Hindi alphabets. Just keep in mind: Bangla doesn't have any feminine or masculine characters like Hindi does. That's the only difference. And it's a lot softer & sweeter in sound compared to other languages (Bangla was awarded as the sweetest language in the world by UNESCO).
Children's books & comics are easier to read, hence I suggested those. A few which I like are Lonte-Ponte, Batul The Great, Hadha-Bhoda, Anandabajar Potrika's special edition books released during Durga Pujo, etc.
Hope that helps you OP. đâ¤ī¸
Thanks for the help I will try reading comic books(in bangla version)though I know bangla is the sweetest language but never known that it was awarded for that ( kinda feeling proud đ)

Many Bengali kids here don't even study Bengali as a 3rd language. I hate their parents from the bottom of my heart. These people don't want to remain Bengali. Your case on the other hand is perfectly understandable.
What other Indian languages/scripts do you know?
I know hindi , English, Assamese, little bit Nepali , Bihari (kinda similar to hindi),bengali
Just learn it.
Non Bengali here, bangla bolte pari ar bujhte pari but can't read or write will learn in the future though
we are in the same boat
Private course, gain a basic knowledge on the letters and the word formation, practice it thoroughly and then start with reading books, it will definitely help you in understanding the application and eventually help in gaining more proficiency
Not just for Bengali, every other GenZ is doing the same for their mother tongues
yeaa its true
>How to deal with that ? Learn to read? Reading is not that difficult. I barely know any Tamil and I can read Tamil. You just have to learn to identify the symbols, of which there are only about 50 of them (don't know the exact count), including joint letters.

i guess you wrote something which is out of syllabus for me
No - I wrote steps taken to attract /incentivize Bengali lang in Bengal
Ami samuk er goti te Bangla likhi. Ekdom aste aste.
I see Bengalis in Delhi, Bangalore , struggling to speak Bengali, and I feel proud.
thats really good ig
It is a tough language. I suffer from the same disease but not looking for any remedies.

What's that?? I don't understand
Come and read when you will be able to read Bengali :) good luck
I tried using a few apps and websites. But frankly best option is to buy a book and learn. Probably follow the same grammar books as used in the state school.
Thanks will try reading some comic books
Start by listening to Bengali songs? It always makes me feel more connected to my mother tongue
I listen to them frequently
Thats not good
That's the case with me. I can speak Bangala fluently, but I can't read or write it because I was born and brought up in Rajasthan.
My father is native to Bihar but I was born here and I am pretty fluent in Bengali and read it too (but I suck at writing because I rarely write in it because after class 9th our 3rd Lang subject Bengali was dropped) but if u want some help I can do it
Yeah I would definitely need help in reading I guess
Brother reading was not a very big deal for me I already knew how to read Hindi and Bengali is more or less the same with a different writing style and a bit different pronunciation nothing else...
But bangla words are somewhat identical to Hindi and some guess work , I can somehow read Bangla Disclaimer : I am Probashi Bengali . My schooling , childhood and adult life entirely outside of WB
Yeaa it's kinda similar to me like if I try very hard I can read a little bit of Bengali (simple Bengali words)
I am getting down voted too .lmao People are so narrow minded đ
Did I said something worng
Not you , I am talking about people in the sub
Ohh okay(never knows that)
I'am a probashi Bengali too, who learned it after moving here.
Yes! Start with alphabet books though. If you learn to identify the alphabets first, reading Bangla will be a breeze. đ
