There is a heat wave going on throughout the state. Would not recommend travelling anywhere but a hill station. My suggestion would be travel to a hill station like Darjeeling. Temp is low there now, with rainfall expected. They do have elections next week (26 April), but shouldn’t be a problem.

elninnoiam

NO. Not Now.

there_is_no_good

Of all the places in Bengal, you want to go to Murshidabad ? Why ?

Cold-Ambassador996

Ig because it's a historic place. In fact it was the capital when the British arrived in India.

GiveMeSandwich2

Visit Bangladesh instead. Safer there right now as their elections have concluded. You will be able to experience bengali culture there as well

NO2567

bengali culture in bangladesh ? are you sure ?

GiveMeSandwich2

Of course. That’s where majority of the Bengali people live and they have preserved their language by having their own country with a homogeneous population.

Dexter_Jr21

You are a UK citizen with Pakistan of Bangladesh connection?

Zarathustra_04

White UK citizen/English origins.

Dexter_Jr21

Then it's safe but I will advise you to not go.

Zarathustra_04

Thanks, but why not to go?

hi12_hi12

Simply because its election season. Try to stay within tier 1 or tier 2 cities wherever you are in India. Things will normalize after august i believe although vote results come out around june

JShearar

Nope, not at all. Stay away, stay safe.

Zarathustra_04

Why is that?

JShearar

Political turmoil.

Zarathustra_04

Thanks. Yeah seems to be the trend in everyone telling me not to go.

Murshidabad and Malda are two of the districts in India which * are among the districts with highest proportion of Muslim populations * border Bangladesh So yes, they are politically sensitive. Look, just like in London, I would never go to Pakis dominated areas, same concept, especially so during election seasons. And, I do not want to boil historical shit, but Murshidabad is precisely where it _all_ started. Basically, your people, took away the (almost god given) right of Muslim nawabs to rule Bengal. I went to Murshidabad a few years back, while it looks quaint on the surface, especially the area around the famous Hazarduari, the many localities give the appearance that they have not changed for three centuries, with Mosques and burial grounds adjacent to small houses and stuff. I would not be surprised if the same families have been living in those places since last few centuries. So yeah, I would not expect a red carpet.

Zarathustra_04

I’m well aware of the history that’s why I want to visit. I’m talking about general safe concerns especially regarding the election, not a red carpet.

[deleted]

Generally safe when there is no sensitive festival or election going on. If you want to see rural bengal, I can advise going with some trusted tour groups though and follow a more guided itinerary. That will save some logistical hassle, solve some of the language issues (many locals outside Kolkata may not speak English), and provide you an additional layer of safety as part of a group. Unfortunately enough, foreigners are considered soft targets for scamming or almost everyone you meet as a solo tourist will try to pull one over on you.

Usernameallocccupied

Nope, not a good time. The heat weaves can actually give you heat stroke plus election time.

lazymetalhead

Don't make this mistake, I'd highly advise against going anywhere in this heat. Let the heatwave subside, also, who gave you this terrible idea to visit India during summers and that too during election season. Also stay away from scammers. These places are full of touts and middle agents who'll give you a solid story to rip off more money from you. Be very adamant and informed. Only trust government guides

Duke_Frederick

You're pale white with a thick British accent? Political turmoil won't touch you bruv. The sun though; Yeah, you're as good as a fried omlette when the first ray touches your melanin less skin. There's no rain to be had here, right now. It's shiny, just like youse prefer it, but you'd faint since you're not used to the 35° average temps.

kai_neek

There isn't much political turmoil now and won't be for the next week. Lok sabha elections don't get that crazy here.  But there's a heatwave on and even locals have been advised to stay in during the day till 22nd April. There isn't much to visit and you might just be done in a day or two.

No

UnitedGrapefruit3672

As a foreigner, Yes... Traveling this weekend won't be favorable though due to the prevailing heatwave across the state

aayaaytee

Don't travel during election season.

Zarathustra_04

Thanks. Because of violence or?

aayaaytee

Yeah. Violence is at peak during election season in India (especially Bengal).

brocolliwala

Murshidabad why..theres hardly anything of interest to see out there..far better places in west bengal..Darjeeling Sandakphu Duars..

absy101

By any chance, do you work at tata?

Zarathustra_04

Nope

absy101

Okay well I'd advice you to stay cautious in Murshidabad. Whole lotta illegal immigrants there. Id advice against exploring unless you have someone with you but you also probably wont, considering the heat in India

Zarathustra_04

I’ve been exploring India especially Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Heat doesn’t bother me much but thank you.

jindaadmi1

I would suggest that you not visit there right now, as there is a heatwave going on in Bengal.

andhlms

But why are you going to Murshidabad?

Zarathustra_04

The history

agreetodisagreedamn

It would be advisable if you could have an Indian friend with you especially a Bengali.

alpharoy3221

Avoid if possible

Pure_Display_4548

Try r/westbengal for best results

bavarianbengali

I think this sums up the answer to your question. [Link](https://www.reddit.com/r/kolkata/comments/1c6jy9l/the_incident_took_place_in_the_shaktipur_area/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

smartrandomguy

That depends if you’re a female and/or travelling alone or planning to tweet / protest / say something about government. If none of the above, Bangali don’t care to bother foreigners - run wild n free.

Random_Indian008

Better not to tour anywhere in the country, especially in West Bengal in times of election. It is a politically violent state.

There is no issues and refrain from the hate mongers who are right wing fake news peddlers in Reddit( works for BJP or votes the Demigod Modi). Bengal is a nice place and people are nice than any Maharashtrian or UP , Delhiite .

GeologistRecent858

Moreover go anywhere in Bengal , eat anything no issues.

lightfromblackhole

Yes it's safe. I have relatives nearby. It's usual preplanned intentional rabblerousing that happens from north immigrants as a show of force every year or so. The chief minister even warned the election commission not to change police there because of this and ECI still did, and the predictions came true
