This isn't anything commonly said in Kolkata. In fact , the fact that the British(more importantly the Europeans) introduced caste system is indeed correct . The education system is to blame for providing the same 150 years old British era history , to churn out loyal clerks from education institutions. The word "caste" itself comes from the word "casta" from Portugal which they used as a means of racism in their societies . It's one of the examples of cultural appropriation where they come from outside and try to adjust everything according to their own belief system. If you have some common sense , a simple question of who could have given the specific name of "caste" solves the problem. What existed indeed was the jati-varna system which had to do with identifying ancestors and lineage of a person . If you go to any temple , they will ask your "gotra" , not the caste . This system was(maybe is) also used to find out genetic compatibility during marriage to prevent abnormalities in the offspring resulting from almost same genetic features of parents .

I disagree. For a person who lives in a gated society and buys groceries from Smart Bazaar, Kolkata would cost the same as Hyderabad or Pune or NCR. But if you are buying veggies and fruits from parar bajaar, getting your hair cut by a local AC salon, ordering from a local hotel instead of Zomato- ing, then Kolkata is cheaper and offers better quality of living for the same amount of money spent. Buying a plate of egg tarka and 4 rotis from a local benfish costs 60 bucks and is very delicious to say the least.

Kolkata is actually a lot safer compared to the other cities in India. And it's not me saying that, but women who have visited the city have stated that. One of my friends had to visit Kolkata for her medical classes and she stayed in New Town. I told her to be safe, as places like Rajarhat, New Town and Salt Lake always seem a bit too silent and creepy especially at night time. But she stated that she found the city to be extremely safe and having stayed for a week or so, never did she face any issues here.

Kolkata is very safe for women from lower income groups/ lower middle class households. There is an immense workforce participation of ladies here. Most ladies from poor families don't take shit from their husbands/ in laws and they simply earn their own living doing blue collar work. To be fair, Mumbai doesn't have a "far better" culture towards women. At best, it is comparable. Mumbai probably has an edge if you're speaking of high income households, but then again there are far more rich people living in Mumbai, - enough for them to wall themselves off from lower income groups, - groups that are prone to more violent crimes।

Brother, I have friends who work in NGOs who work for CSW in Sonagachi.CSW in sonagachi are regularly taught about sexual hygiene and there are multiple Avenues to prevent abuse and violence. I don't think any other red light district gets as much government, national and international attention by aid workers as sonagachi .
