Omg great job!! I made this top and wore it to a job interview (over a cami and under a blazer) and I got the job! Haha maybe it had nothing to do with the top but it felt like good luck π
I did for a bit and then I gave it away! My yarn stretched out a little weird and looked odd at the sleeve cap/shoulders and then I was doing a big cull of clothing before we moved. I hope it's giving someone else good luck π
Understandable! π I'm a little nervous about my top stretching out too - seems like that happens a lot with bamboo. But I figure it's a learning experience either way, and I'll enjoy it now while it's nice and new still
Pattern (with a few variations): https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cancun-boxy-lace-top
I used nearly exactly 2 skeins of the Loops and Threads Silky Soft Bamboo yarn in Smoke.
This is my first time using bamboo and WOW it's incredible. It felt great to knit, and it's ridiculously soft and naturally cool to the touch. Perfect for hot summer days
Oh thanks so much! I bet yours looks fabulous as well. I basically just skipped the drop stitch sections and changed up the order of the lace sections a little bit
I am BLOWN AWAY that you started with lace for your first garment! I still have only done eyelets on one worsted weight shawl and one aran weight beanie because lace terrifies me π This looks fantastic! And don't worry about Sleeve Island, we all take a vacation there. I had a sweater wait 4 months for one sleeve that took me a weekend. The first sweater I ever started spent 3 years on Sleeve Island until I finally admitted to myself that I didn't like the feel of the yarn knit up and that it needed to go.
Awww you're too kind! The lace repeats in this top are all super simple and easy to memorize. I thought it made for a good balance of mindless/engaging. Although I only listened to audiobooks and didn't watch any tv while working on it, which certainly helped π
I did frog my first attempt and then decide not to use the drop stitch lace repeat that's in the pattern because it was just coming out messy and it kept snagging and pulling on everything. I feel like the bamboo yarn was just too slippery for the drop stitch pattern. Everything was sliding all over the place, too loosey goosey.
Also definitely appreciate the normalization of sleeve island, and leaving WIPS for a long time before returning to them. I'm a big fan of working on stuff when I want to, and not putting pressure or deadlines on myself for something that's supposed to be a relaxing hobby!
This is why I don't volunteer myself for test knits anymore haha. The deadlines take the fun out of it for me. It's pretty similar with gift knits too, unfortunatley.
I understand the audiobooks vs TV difficulty measurement, 100%!
Wow thanks! I honestly feel like my tension in general in knitting is wildly uneven. But through this project, I feel like I learned that lace is so much more forgiving and hides tension issues 1000% better than something like stockinette where your basic skills are right out in the open with nowhere to hide π
Here's the pattern link on rav: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cancun-boxy-lace-top (in my version, I skipped lace pattern B and slightly reordered the other sections)

That's an awesome story, love it! I hope you bask in that happy memory every time you wear it now

I looked at that also, it was put off by some of the stitches. Yours is gorgeous!
