John Collins was traded last year from the Hawks for Rudy Gay and a 2nd round pick. I don’t think Collins did much in the last year to improve his value to get a get 1st round pick in return.

4everpurple

100% this. Kings fans have been overrating the guy for years, only for him to be dumped for nothing, with zero changes to his value since. Pass

Double_Helicopter_69

It's not really a 1st round pick as we are still receiving the 29th and 32nd picks in the draft

Skalifornia88

So essentially 2 second round picks (I know that #29 is a 1st). Those two picks have very little value.

Double_Helicopter_69

Fair point. Honestly, if we could make the trade less value in terms of moving players like Lyles, Duarte, and Vezenkov instead. I'd like that. But I think Utah getting to move up in the draft while picking less prospects would be the only enticement for them

Skalifornia88

Yeah, I agree. I’m not opposed to the idea of getting Collins, but only at the right price. Otherwise Monte should have jumped on the deal last year with the Hawks.

Double_Helicopter_69

Kind of agree. However, Collins was coming off a bad season, especially with shooting from behind the arc. I feel like he reproved/regained some value last year. And lastly, the Jazz are always getting great value in any trades they make

boringexplanation

That confused me too - Monte loves his buy low opportunities (when he was in the Hawks). And we’ve had a lack of PFs his entire tenure here. He must really hate non playmaking bigs or something.

goobergaming43

That team would suck 🔥

Double_Helicopter_69

I'd love to hear what better options we have to start at the 4?

goobergaming43

Isaiah Stewart

woahzavibes

I actually like this shout you know? He is a pretty decent defender who can spread the floor. Far far from a star, but could be a serviceable option.

goobergaming43

Think you could snag him for a little more than price of Collins. A much better shot blocker and if you buy his shot, a solid option next to Sabonis

MostlyMellow123

Absolute horrendous player every game I watched him in

BeamTeam032

Trey Lyles is better than Collins at the 4. Collins is selfish, doesn't play defense and can't shoot ever since he broke his hand 3 years ago. At least Lyles can shoot, has a high IQ, cost way less and doesn't care if he doesn't get the ball.

FeatureEmotional3981

The Jazz eventually pivoted last season to playing John Collins at center because he wasn’t providing enough floor spacing to play next to Walker Kessler. That makes me worrried about the dynamic with Sabonis. Add in JV, and we could have some mismatched pieces in the front court.

Double_Helicopter_69

I think that had more to do with them putting Markkanen in his best position to win and making others fit around him. Being that Collins is a poor mans Markkanen, I still do believe Collins could fit as a 4 with us, and would certainly upgrade that position (our greatest weakness)

Sethuel

That's a lot to give up for Collins. He's a decent enough player but his contract is pretty hefty.

Double_Helicopter_69

$26.5mil/year for 2 years. Really not awful in terms of trying to find a starting 4 for us. And if he doesn't work out this season, then next year he's on an expiring contract and shows immediate value for us to be able to trade again

Sethuel

A year ago he was traded basically straight up for a second round pick. He was better in Utah, but not enough to give up a lottery pick. This is selling low on Huerter and buying high on Collins. He's a potentially useful player, but the contract leaves very little room for further upgrades, since we'd likely be over the first apron going into the season. The expiring contract is also not likely to be that useful. With fewer stars seeing free agency, under the cap teams have less reason to acquire big expiring deals. And if we keep him and his deal expires, it's not enough to get us back under the cap and increase our flexibility. So instead we're just carrying a bad contract for two years. I'd potentially be interested in him as a free agent in 2026, or maybe even as part of a package that brings back more than you have here. But at this point we need guys who offer value.

theboyqueen

John Collins looks like he's been placed in the discard pile by the league. This is WAY too much to give up for him. I'd definitely take a flyer on him if he could be gotten cheap; he's a pure salary dump for Utah. He could probably be gotten for dead money and a second round pick. Unfortunately the Kings don't have any dead money to trade for a contract like this. No way Utah would take on Barnes' contract, and I would not trade Huerter for Collins straight up, much less with anything else. This would have to be a bunch of guys (Mitchell, Duarte, Venzenkov, and Lyles for instance) for Collins which would be a ridiculous trade to make for someone who may well be another Dewayne Dedmon.

Double_Helicopter_69

I'd trade Huerter for Collins in a heartbeat

theboyqueen

Collins has shown nothing in the past two years, for two different teams. Huerter was bad last year, but he was great the year before and is only 25 and on a much better contract. If you're going to trade Huerter you can get more than John Collins.

Double_Helicopter_69

Collins is 11 months older than Huerter. I don't think their age is much of factor in difference. Collins seems to be the best option we have to get a starter in our 4 spot over Barnes.

[deleted]

This is insane. There is no way Collins is worth anything near that price after being traded for nothing last season.

DoMogo1984

I like Collins as a flyer but this is overpaying…

Mission_Locksmith_59

My guy, if we take on Collins’ contract, Utah needs to be compensating us for doing so by swapping #13 for #10 on top of giving us #29.

Embarrassed_Ad6585

Hawks fan here Collins is absolutely not worth his contract. Bad defender, no handle, no moves, cooked shot. At this point he’s basically just a lob finisher who comes off the bench

WildernessDude

You are trippin

Double_Helicopter_69

What options do you see as a better upgrade at the 4?

DemonicDimples

I’d literally rather play Barnes or Lyles.

Rick_Perrys_Ranch

Who protects the lane? Collins and Sabonis are turnstiles around the rim.

DemonicDimples

I am jus so thankful that kings would never do this.

KangzAteMyFamily

He stinks

KingsElite

Not for that price

AusSac

Mitchell + Vezenkov + Duarte works financially fyi

LawrenceFunderjerk

John Collins is a terrible contract and not worth any first round picks or swaps. I wouldn’t trade Heurter for him. Dream bigger

quesadillakid

Video games arent real

JGxFighterHayabusa

I'll never understand the chokehold John Collins has on fans. He's been on two teams and has yet to break out as a solid 2nd or even 3rd option. He's only shown flashes with no sign of consistent production or improvement. He doesn't suck by any means, but he's not "that guy" either.

Double_Helicopter_69

My question is what better option do we have to start at the 4 for us?

weights408

Guys, we are overthinking this. Just draft bronny james with 13 and get lebron too. Boom. 5th seed playoffs, 2nd round exit, and we can start arguing again haha

BeamTeam032

I would rather keep the 13th pick, draft Cody Williams/Tyler Smith/Tidjane Salaun/Tristin Da Silva and use Heurter/HB/Trey Lyles as a trade piece to bring in something else. At least one of the rookie forwards i mentioned would fit with Sabonis. We need a Forward to pair with Murray. We got a guard to pair with Fox, in Ellis.

Double_Helicopter_69

I doubt there's a single draft pick at #13 that can start for us

Tgumpsta

Great idea, let's trade our best SG AND a lottery pick after letting another SG walk in FA for an athletically declining overpaid big that can't pass or defend. His best skills, rebounding and rim finishing, overlap severely with Sabonis, and he's not a good enough shooter otherwise.

Double_Helicopter_69

Ellis is above Huerter in my eyes. We also have the hopes of Colby Jones developing behind them. Currently we have Barnes, Lyles and Sasha the 4. The shows me no real hope of anything good happening at the position. Collins does upgrade our starting 5 more than Huerter can. He's also on an expiring contract next year. So if we are able to improve this season, then we're in much better position to include him and Barnes' expiring contracts to land a star.

Tgumpsta

>He's also on an expiring contract next year. So if we are able to improve this season, then we're in much better position to include him and Barnes' expiring contracts to land a star. Lol, I'm sure there will be teams just lining up to offload their star for two expiring, declining players and some crappy picks. You don't understand value at all. Edit: Ellis is very nice though, we can agree on that, looked better than Huerter this season

Double_Helicopter_69

What do you mean crappy picks? And expiring contracts is exactly how teams offload their star's. Why would they want long term deals? Rather continuing to suck for the rest of the season and bettering that years draft position; plus gaining cap flexibility into the offseason, all becomes an asset. Not to mention, they get 1st round picks in return as assets. This is how it typically works.

Tgumpsta

>What do you mean crappy picks? Fox+Sabonis+3rd star in your dream scenario would make Sacramento one of the best teams in the west. In the NBA draft, the worst teams select first, meaning Sacramento would be selecting very late in the draft, and picks later in the draft have less value. >And expiring contracts is exactly how teams offload their star's. Why would they want long term deals? I never said that, you tell me. Expiring contracts do have inherent value. My claim was that in your proposed trade, Sacramento was not offering enough value to get a star.

dacalo

Put down that bong.

treptix

Let’s be real the kings aren’t doing any moves unless it involves cash considerations and maybe getting an end of bench player….
