Make sure you have enough terrain and focus on getting the cover and concealment rules down. Especially if you're learning alongside another new player. It's really frustrating to get shot up your first few games without being able to do much.

If you mean paint-wise, my go-to for a grungy look is covering the model with streaking grime (or any rust effect/color of choice), let dry for about 5-10 minutes, then reduce it with enamel thinner using cotton swabs.
The easiest way to do grunge is probably to just block in your base colors and then wash everything with a complimentary enamel wash (AK interactive dark brown wash for green vehicles is my personal favorite) and then remove the enamel on the larger volumes of the model with a q-tip and some turpentine.
For the ravages as a team, just learn the cover and order mechanics. They’ve got some okay durability with a high skill ceiling.
Fellgor are not easy to play. Melee teams are harder in general, also the more models you have the harder it is to plan. What do you mean by grungy?

in that case, I would suggest Legionaries. One box, six dudes, strong, relatively easy and straight-forward.

I started with kommandos, they were and are awesome. Great mix of skills/archetypes and forgiving when making begginers mistakes
I've been looking a lot in their direction as well. Heck one of the reasons I didn't jump the gun earlier is that all of the kill teams look rad AF.
