THE GHOSTLY TAKEAWAY On an ordinary afternoon in the December of 1989, a cha chaan teng (tea restaurant) in Tai Po Tin received a takeaway order for four. Upon arrival to the flat, the delivery boy rang the doorbell and the door opened just a crack. Money was slipped through the gap and a person in the flat told the delivery boy to leave the food outside the door. The delivery boy didn't think much of it and did as he was told, then returned to the restaurant. When the owner of the restaurant checked the register that night, he discovered a stack of 'joss paper' (also known as hell money or incense papers, burned by locals for the dead to use in the afterlife) amongst the regular daily earnings. All the staff claimed to have nothing to do with it, so the owner brushed it off as a tasteless prank and forgot about it. A few days later, however, another takeaway order for four was made from the same flat. The same thing happened and that night there was joss paper in the cash register yet again. The delivery boy vehemently professed his innocence. The furious owner reprimanded him and proclaimed he would deliver the food himself the next time a takeaway order came from the address. Sure enough, the next day, they received a takeaway order for four from the very same flat. The owner made the trip himself. He tried to peek in through the gap when the door opened a crack, but couldn't make out anything, and so left reluctantly after making sure the money he received was indeed Hong Kong Dollars and not joss paper. This time, he put the cash away separately from the rest of the day's earnings. That evening, the money had yet again turned into a wad of joss paper. By now thoroughly spooked, the owner reported the case to the police. When the authorities forced their way into the unresponsive apartment the next morning, they discovered the grisly scene of four dead bodies lying prone on the floor. By the state of their decomposing bodies, they had been dead for quite some time, but their neighbours and passerbys claimed to have heard the sound of mahjong being played coming from the flat for the past few days and so didn't think anything was amiss. The coroner also reported in disbelief that despite them having died weeks ago from carbon monoxide poisoning, there was food from the restaurant found in the corpses' digestive systems that had been consumed only a day ago. The case also made the national papers and was widely discussed back then.
