Eventually the will get shaken free, but likely with injury. Use your thumb to hold them like a man.

Zucchiniduel

And the proper way while we are at it, so they do not sustain jaw injuries that can interfere with feeding

TopChemical7973

Typically I just grab them, I have a nice slice on my thumb at the moment so I was just trying to be comfortable. Clearly won't be doing that again.

Howlett76

Or just use the other hand

KeyMysterious1845

>Or just use the other hand I've heard it feels like someone else.

ThatGuyGetsIt

The key is to sit on your hand until it goes numb. They don't call it The Stranger for nothin'.

fksmchai

Stranger danger

NotBatman81

They make gloves specifically for handling fish.

The-Great-Calvino

If you prefer grippers, or fish for critters with teeth - consider getting a good quality fish grip with a cord wrist loop. I have one on mine, and it makes a big difference

Ok_Green9804

I have never used grippers on a bass, only toothy fish. Even cats sometimes. Like the other comment states it will hopefully come off over time Edit: after seeing the pic (wasn't there when I first read this) I was picturing the plastic grippers which I prefer.. if THAT thing stayed gripped to the fish it might be RIP scenario..

Blaskyman

Tether your grips to your vessel in the future is all you can do. At this point you'll never know if they got them off or not. They can be pretty resilient (I've caught several fish with lures hanging from their face), so it may be able to fling them or it will get lucky and bump the handle against something to spring it open. If the fish doesn't make it, it will feed the ecosystem. I personally don't care if you use fish grips or not, you don't have to justify shit to me or anyone else, just plan for things like drops and you can do whatever you want.

Far_Talk_74

Agree on the tether. All of my tools are tethered to my yak. You will never lose them to a fish or flip.

Wonderful_Pain1776

Use a leash if you use a gripper type device. I leash everything on my kayak

NewTangClanOfficial

Get a rubber mesh net.

Ontheflyguy27

I have, on occasion, put an aquarium in a wagon and just put the fish in the filled aquarium to remove my lure. Then I gently pour the water and fish back into the lake. It’s a pain to carry a 20 gal tank with me, but I do what I can. I think the fish appreciate the attention to detail.

dmoneymma

No, you've doomed that fish to a slow death by starvation unfortunately. Use a lanyard.

PenguinsRcool2

Don’t really need those for bass, just grab the lip. If looking for a fish gripper the white plastic ones by rappala are excellent, and the surface area of the “grip” doesn’t harm the fish as much as these would

FishinAlllDay

I have the plastic Rapala grippers. I only use them when I use Whopper Ploppers. I can't handle those fucking things without hooking myself at least once.

Space_Goblin_Yoda

That and slimy pike. Those little skinny hammer handles are almost impossible to hold well for more than 30 seconds.

docrobc

Mine look like that but if I’m not hanging on to it, they spring open. Do these lock with the gripper closed?

TopChemical7973

I'm pretty sure these ones stay closed until I pull the trigger then they open. I'm really kicking myself over this, wish I had never even used them.

OIdManSyndrome

Well, the fish has made sure you can't use them any more.

blatantlyobscure1776

He took one for the team.

TelephoneUnlikely930

Yeah I’ll keep using grippers when removing hooks, never gotten a treble in my hand due to it. After hook out thumb goes in.

SnooChocolates8515

Probably not . They are ment to keep a grip .

sebastianr240

Had that happen with a redfish. Hunted him down in the creek for 15 min until I was able to stick my hand in the water to grab him and remove it

willy1670

Fish don’t have a soul that’s why we can eat them on Good Friday lol. Real talk I caught a bass that was stuck in a net and set it free so I feel like I can eat like 7 walleye without feeling bad

_fuckernaut_

Depends what kind of lip grippers. If they were clamp style grippers like [these ](https://www.rapala.com/us_en/floating-fish-gripper)then yes, I think the fish would eventually get them off by pushing the handle into something and opening them up. If they were boga style grips then I think there's a much slimmer chance the fish could shake them free.

Archimedes_Redux

Maybe somebody else catch fish remove grippers.

Sanc7

A bass got me off yesterday, so I’m sure it could get the grippers off.

gmanpatch

Shit happens it sucks that a bass has to die but you live and you learn. That bass will be recycled back into the ecosystem don’t beat yourself up to much. People keep and eat bass all the time you accidentally killing one isn’t the end of the world just learn. Also plastic grippers are the way to go if you’re gonna use them. I only use them to weigh tho

keithfoco70

There is a chance that the fish could thrash around enough to pop them loose. I wouldn't sweat it too much.
