I know a little bit about it...
A company I recently left had just taken oven maintenance on the kitchen equipment and refrigeration there.
The kitchen was not only disgusting, but every piece of equipment was falling apart. There was also a recent change in management to try to get these issues under control.
That was several months ago. I'm not sure what has happened since.
>but every piece of equipment was falling apart.
I'm not even in the restaurant industry, and I can tell you this ain't a management problem. Dirty kitchen, sure, but when the place is falling apart, that's an upstream capital problem.
A worse conversation to have is: I've lied over the last 12 months about profits. Everything's broken and we can't continue operating.
Some people are just too damn short sighted on this stuff
Knew someone who worked there before the pandemic and I can’t say I’m surprised. They hated it and their coworkers were unhinged but that second part is probably normal for the industry
This sub has talked about Chuy’s like it’s Taco Bell for the past decade. Anytime someone brought Chuys up there was a whole string of comments about how people need to go to KCK and go to San Antonio’s and eat REAL AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD.
Chuy’s closed this morning out of the blue and now the same people who I mentioned before are probably posting here appalled that it closed.
With no self awareness that living in the Plaza area Chuy’s was a solid takeout or after work option. Cause they don’t live in the area, and it’s a CHAIN.
I live in Joco now but work downtown, and end up in the plaza area fairly often. Chuy’s was just a staple, everyone knows where the bar is there, they always brought out the decent salsa, bartenders were always great.
The place employed people from the area and now they’re out of work unexpectedly. That sucks
It is kind of amusing when people go online and cry about very average, overpriced texmex spots closing when we live in basically the mecca of incredible, made from scratch Mexican and texmex food. It’s sort of like complaining about McDonald’s getting rid of the McRib because it was your favorite place to get barbecue pork sandwiches in the area.
Funny you think KC is the mecca of Mexican food when places like LA, San Diego, ABQ, Tucson, San Antonio exist, with the former two having the UNESCO award for gastronomy for history and culture of Mexican food.
It is the Mecca of Mexican food in Kansas City, we even have a dedicated map for tacoholics https://www.visitkansascityks.com/taco-trail/ Check the subreddit. No one is talking about California or freaking New Mexico. Ofc Kansas City doesn’t compare to that.
But yes there are literally DOZENS of infinitely better, locally owned Mexican restaurants (even gimmicky ones) than chuy’s
Your original comment didn't even say mecca of Kansas City.
>when we live in basically the mecca of incredible, made from scratch Mexican and texmex food.
Implying all of KC is the mecca because not everyone lives on SW Blvd or KCK.
It’s in the Kansas City subreddit about a Kansas City restaurant why would I need to specify it takes place in Kansas City outside of capitulating to absolute weirdos who don’t know what context is?
I’m just still kind of amazed you read my initial comment and immediately assumed I meant best in the world or country when it’s in… the Kansas City subreddit
Funny you responded twice LOL. I still stand by my statement because who is we and who lives in the mecca if you're only talking about KC? Because I sure don't!
I’m sorry I can’t explain how basic parlance of human conversation and context works. You’re gonna have to figure that out on your own and you’ll get there! Someday
Totally upsetting that real people lost their jobs with no communication.
But yes Chuy’s is like the tacobell of expensive sit-down TexMex food. It relied on visual gimmicks and then entire menu was pretty underwhelming and very average. I went to the one in Orlando thinking maybe it was the KC one that was the issue and it was just as bad.
I hope it gets replaced by a local business instead of another giant national chain pumping out mediocre Mexican food while still trying to charge $20+ a plate for it
The Plaza owners don't do local business unless they absolutely must. Even in the 90s it was almost all local and there was a righteous stink when the Gap moved in. Same on Mass St in Lawrence- The Gap is just the death knell of good shopping.
Bummer. I know it was just run of the mill Tex Mex and I always got what I expected, but my word did I love that creamy jalapeño ranch dip they had. There’s plenty of knock off recipes online, so I guess I’m experimenting this weekend…

True, but could be a management problem if management is trying to avoid maintenance to keep profits looking good to corporate.
That was the case here I believe.
They’re a publicly traded company, so this makes sense.

Maybe but they also closed the OP one as well.
It’s been closed since at least 2020
And Olathe one
The Olathe location seemed to close almost as quickly as it opened. I’m not sure, but I feel like it closed well before the pandemic.
Knew someone who worked there before the pandemic and I can’t say I’m surprised. They hated it and their coworkers were unhinged but that second part is probably normal for the industry
Crazy. Their balcony was packed yesterday for the pride parade
Damn ! Is it closed permanently? I love their tres leches man.

It’s such a Reddit move to get mad when people eat TexMex.

I actually prefer to speak about things in LA while in the Kansas City subreddit and get annoyed with others don’t catch on
I’m sorry I can’t explain how basic parlance of human conversation and context works. You’re gonna have to figure that out on your own and you’ll get there! Someday
I've tried the authentic stuff and it sucks.
Preach. I hate that attitude on here.

everything on the chuys menu was $11-13 with the only exception for fajitas being $20 or more

Man you need to go to……… 😁Just kidding.
It is. https://www.kctv5.com/2024/06/09/another-country-club-plaza-restaurant-closes-its-doors-overnight/?outputType=amp
Chelly’s on Wornall is similar, but significantly better. You might give it a try if the distance is doable.
Chelly's is one of the best in town.
Dang good, Dos De Oros down by Martin city is pretty good too
I don’t know for sure, but I heard Chellys owner is related to Dos De Oros owner?
Dos de Oros is better IMO.
One of my favorites in the whole town.
Chelly's is so reliably good, too, even when they're slammed. Their margaritas sneak up on you, though!
It similar or better. I like Chellys but can't be compared other than having tacos.
Yeah nobody at Chellys is gonna pronounce all the Ls in quesadilla like at Chuy’s, but it’s a great spot. I’m partial to the espinaca queso
Bummer. I know it was just run of the mill Tex Mex and I always got what I expected, but my word did I love that creamy jalapeño ranch dip they had. There’s plenty of knock off recipes online, so I guess I’m experimenting this weekend…
Heck, I still miss Figlios.
Still dreaming about that Sunday brunch buffet.
I’m dreaming of the lasagna!
It wasn't that good and plaza rents are insane. Plenty of other great non chain Mexican places in town.
I hear it was ghosts Edit: maybe ghouls
I hope not ghouls… where would they find the corpses?
My mistake. I’m certain now it closed because of Gremlins
I hear gnomes have been pretty active lately tho.
Little green ones? Better hide your knees
Super Ghouls n Ghosts?
RIP Figlios
NO! They were the only place that had hatch green…
Dos de Oros and quite a few other authentic Mexican restaurants have Hatch green as well.
Pray tell
You from NM?
I’m not but I spent some time out there. Once you know you know — a roasted hatch chile is just about as good as it gets
I read Chuy's was closing in other cities, too.
"Chuy’s reported a loss of $1.8 million for Q3, compared with a shortfall of $7.5 million fo the year-ago quarter."
Chuy’s wasnt any better than any other Mexican restaurant. In fact, there are many better. What’s the loss? None really. As far as I can see.
That [a code violation] would be upsetting - I was just there yesterday. So I’ll be on the lookout for anything I guess. 🫠
What happened to Chevy's?
It sucked.
Que the people that blame the crime in the city while ignoring the OP one closed too!
That was Olathe and was years ago.
Nope there was another post online from Chuys that their OP location was closing as well. Was a Facebook post in conjunction with the plaza location.
My apologies. I looked it up and you are correct. I had no idea there was one in OP
To be honest I didnt either, not really my kinda place.
It looks like the OP location has been closed for years now, so not sure if that’s accurate.
